Short hair is where it’s at. Let’s face it ladies, long hair is great to have, but can be hard and tedious to deal with at times. So, naturally this season - lots of women are opting to cut it all off and start brand new. Many Hollywood starlets have decided to go short or stay short recently - my favorite new cuts being Toccara and Tia Mowry.
Having a haircut is more that just a change of how you look, you even feel like a new person. It’s definitely a mental change, which you should be sure you’re ready for upon deciding to do the big chop.
But, if you are ready - then you will have lots of fun looking for styles because short hair offers a huge variety of looks - just ask celebrity hair stylist Ursula Stephen.
I recently spoke with the stylist, who is widely known as the genius responsible for Rihanna’s infamous bob and current short cut. See what Stephens says about short dos this summer and how she maintains Ri’s locks:
Tianna: You’re known as the stylist behind Rihanna and Keyshia Cole’s new haircuts. Lots of readers particularly love Rihanna’s hair - what inspired her current look and what made you give her look?
Ursula: Well, it was first inspired by the bob - even going that step. It made me say, I want to take the next step because I’m always ready to do something new, crazy, and fun! So, one day I said to her - I’m cutting off all your hair today - because she kept saying she wanted to go shorter. Every minute, she was bugging me about going shorter! We just did it, and it was crazy!
♫ Robin Thicke - Magic (full) - listen
A little while ago, we posted some updates about Robin Thicke releasing his third album, and the first single was slated to be called “Magic.” Here it is! Sorry about all the DJ mess going on in the beginning, but I was excited to post this track when I get the information in my inbox. The Evolution of Robin Thicke was a really good album to me, and I was even more in love with his first album, Beautiful World, so I was quite anxious to hear what this new material for the new album. “Magic” is definitely jamming. I’m digging the music.
♫ Teairra Mari - Exclusive (full) - listen
Here’s more music from Teairra Mari’s new project, which is due out on Interscope this summer. I was actually a fan of Teairra’s debut album (save a few songs — like “No Daddy”), so when I found that she was coming back onto the scene, I wanted to see what kind of look and sound she was going for. Although I’m rooting for Teairra, and I’m definitely in her corner, I haven’t really liked any of the other songs leaked aside from the single, “No No No.” Hopefully these are just teaser tracks.
Jay-Z and Beyonce were spotted sitting court side at Game 5 of the NBA Eastern Conference semi-final basketball playoff series between the Celtics and the Cavaliers on Wednesday night. And before she hit up the game with her boo in Boston, Beyonce was spotted leaving an appointment in Midtown, NYC earlier that same day.
Meet K. Michelle. This 22 year-old Memphis native is hitting the music scene with her soulful R&B. Citing Whitney Houston as her inspiration, the singer says she wants longevity in the game. “I want to make great music that will be around forever,” she expresses. “I feel that a lot of music and artists out now are one hit wonders. You can always listen to my music. I need for my songs to be big records, emotional records and motivating records that people will always be able to remember.”
On Wednesday at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan, John Edwards endorsed former rival Sen. Barack Obama. Edwards, a former senator from North Carolina and 2004 vice presidential nominee, finished second to Obama in the Iowa caucus before dropping out in late January.
Guess who was spotted on the set of the new ‘Hannah Montana’ movie in Nashville, TN on Wednesday afternoon? Hint: She is one of the stars of a very popular TV series..
American Idol season 3 winner, Fantasia Barrino, was on the results show Wednesday night where she performed her new song “Bore Me” and worked her new red hair color. The performance was dope. I’m a Fantasia fan, so I guess I’m biased. Anyway, peep Simon Cowell’s face at 2:43 mark, he looked like he was in shock..
CONGRATS TO TRISTAN WILDS!
Tristan Wilds, best known for his portrayal of Michael on the HBO series The Wire, just signed on to be on the new Beverly Hills, 90210 spinoff. The 18 year-old has also been featured a few music videos, as well as on Jay-Z’s I Will Not Lose Spring Campaign. He is a good little actor, so make sure you guys look out for him. I still miss The Wire man….
Aaron Douglas (1898-1979) was a leading visual artist during the Harlem Renaissance.
Douglas was born May 26, 1898, in Topeka, Kansas. At an early age, his mother encouraged his creative interest in art; his drawings and paintings were welcomed on the walls of their home. He was also heavily influenced by Henry Ossawa Tanner, the first black painter to gain international acclaim.
In 1922, Douglas graduated with a B.A. in fine arts from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He taught art in Kansas City for a few years until he decided to pursue a career as an artist and headed to New York to earn his M.A. from Columbia University. In 1925, Douglas moved to New York City and settled in Harlem. A few months after his arrival, Douglas began producing illustrations for both The Crisis and Opportunity, the two most important magazines associated with the Harlem Renaissance. Douglas was also the illustrator for The New Negro, edited by Dr. Alain Locke.
