The second song is the only song even close to the A7X of Waking the Fallen (and the earlier years). Scream (track 3), Afterlife (track 4) and Unbound (track 6) are most reminiscent of the melodic rockers that densely populated City of Evil. And the most interesting composition…and I do mean composition…is A Little Piece of Heaven; it’s an operatic, carnival-esque, strange, spooky song. There are also a couple of ballads and one song that’s called Lost that’s just…well…lost on this CD with its electric vocalizations.

Unlike City of Evil where each song was over 5 minutes long, almost every song on this 10 track disk is under or right at the 5 minute mark (with the exception of the last two tracks).

All of the songs are clearly sung by Shadows. The music is hard. There’s spectacular drumming by TheRev. There’s head banging, melodic, Iron Maiden-ish guitar solos and driving bass. But as I said earlier, none of the 10 tracks immediately jump out at you.

While City of Evil brought a refreshing, somewhat newish sound to Metal fans, A7X’s Avenged Sevenfold is a step backwards…not bad…but definitely a step backwards. Sorry fans.
