Dave discusses race on his show.
/EDIT
If you were like me and forgot about it (luckily Oprah airs 2 times where I live), Oprah.com has most of the interview and whatnot posted. Here is a snippet:
Some people said Dave had gone crazy or was on drugs. Some media reported Dave was locked in a mental institution.
In reality, Dave says, he went to South Africa to slow down. How could he have just left like that? “One, I needed a break,” he says. “Two, we have family and friends down there. I felt like it was a place where I could really reflect… And here’s the other thing: I was only gone for two weeks! They made it sound like it was so mysterious.”
Tension on the Chappelle’s Show set went from bad to worse during the third season
One particular sketch still disturbs Dave today. The skit was about a pixie (played by Dave) who appeared in black face, which Dave describes as the “visual personification of the “N” word.”
“There was a good-spirited intention behind it,” Dave says. “So then when I’m on the set, and we’re finally taping the sketch, somebody on the set [who] was white laughed in such a way—I know the difference of people laughing with me and people laughing at me—and it was the first time I had ever gotten a laugh that I was uncomfortable with. Not just uncomfortable, but like, should I fire this person?”
Oprah asks Dave the $50 million question…will he ever return to Chappelle’s Show?
Like a pendulum, Dave says his attitude has swung back and forth between “I’ll never go back” to “I can’t walk away from $50 million” over the last few months. Dave says he thinks he’s finally come to a decision.
“Here’s a scenario that I could come back to the show—I can’t believe I’m saying this—but this is what I want to do,” he says. “I do want to do my show again provided, one, I can make the proper work environment. But more importantly, I want to give. … I don’t want the money. I don’t want the drama. I just want to do my show. I want to have fun again.”

I caught Dave, on Oprah and he didnt disappoint!!
Besides the creative differences and autonomy he wanted I got the feeling that there was also some issue on the DVD sales money - you have to remember that Dave’s was the highest grossing TV DVD sales ever. Did anybody else get that?? O r was I just reading too much into a few comments.

WELL I just caught it on TV55 in NYC (brooklyn)
I believe the “dark crusaders”
theroy. Oprah seemed tight with him and he seemed to only redeem himself by saying that the reason he left”network” issues and not any “personal” issues as to . He mentioned “Ethics” and being responsible for what he put out. That was interesting, I was reading between the lines. I love Dave and I feel he has a point by saying the “industy” did put alot of pressure on him. But, I also believe the Dave Chappelle show Theroy.
Holla at ur gurl!

I started to believe the ‘Chapelle Theory’ when he said he was being socially irresponsible. Did you catch the dis to Martin about wearing dresses? “Success takes you where character cannot sustain you.”

^^Nah baby, the quote has much deeper meaning than that. I caught it too and I really liked it. I truly understood why he left now too. I miss the hell out of Dave now though. I hope that he is now even more ready to take the reigns of his career and have some strong people around him.

I fully enjoyed the interview. Dave was tired and I can see why. I guess when he got rich all of his family and friends felt as though they got rich too; and then when he decided yto go against the grain of what was making him rich; family and friends was calling him crazy. I guess walking away from such a large amount of money is borderline crazy, but he realizes that life is greater than money. Run Dave run………. I would love to see this man succeed and I will support him in any way I can. Go see his Movie which will hit theaters in March!!!!!!!!!!

Dave made mentioned of the whole paranoia and connecting perhaps dots that shouldn’t be connected. But I’m going through something similiar on a much smaller scale. And 5 years ago that whole —blocking his office in with a wall, suggesting medication, all that other conspiracy theory shit I would have never believed-
but I wasn totally getting him. TOTALLY. And it does happen particularly when you have something that they in fact need—-thats when you become a high paid nigga….nothing more. Their control MUST always exist and they will do everything to make you feel that they have it and you don’t —thats in the case of 500,000 or 50,000,000.
The bottom line and maybe at this point its all rhetoric but black folks need to start controling more of our media outlets-so these conversations won’t be necessary. His 50 mil, with Bob Johnson’s 50 mil, Oprah’s 50 mil, Cosby’s 50 mil etc etc—-could buy a major network.

Oh man–the Conspiracy Theory?? You mean the same one that Whoopie Goldberg was a part of? The same Whoopie whose white boyfriend wore blackface to a public event as a joke? A consipiracy on a professionally produced website that ended with a ad hawking tee-shirts?? Come on people. That was a total money-making stunt.

I thought the interview was great. Dave was funny as always, and Oprah asked him the questions that everyone wanted to know the answers to. I like the whole comment about him going back to africa, He was like when you live in the US, why would you go to Africa for medicial reasons, thats so damn true, because everyone is talking about how there arent any medicial specials in africa so that wouldnt make sense, but anyways was it just me, or did it seemed that there isnt going to be a 3rd season. I dont think Dave will be able to get his demands met, therefore no 3rd season

Oh yeah, I saw it. Pretty interesting. He was talking a little slow, so he could be taking something (not illegal drugs) but it was a good show. I hope he gets his requests met because we need more Chappelle Show!

I don’t care what nobody says, I think Oprah and them “dark crusaders” had somethin to do with it. She probably just had him on the show to dispell the rumors- yall see he still really didn’t give a concrete answer. Oprah and Bill and some of the others seem a lil off and too damn powerful to me. Oprah contradicts herself, and always manages to remind you that she has more money than you. Her interviews are REALLY insensitive sometimes too- when the woman who got her face shot off was on, Oprah said somethin like- “when you you so brutally had your face shot off- somethin way worse- and watch how she looks at people- the ones with deformities. She’s hilarious!

I’m with you ‘I’m not her’. They could all put $50 million a piece toward a black-owned network. It’s not like they’d be hurting, and it would more than pay off in the end, but that’s too much like right.
On another note: I comletely believe in the ‘Chappelle Theory’. And this is why I gained so much MORE respect for Dave after all of this transpired than I already had. Dave Chapelle refuse to turn into his polar opposite Chris Rock. Who would sell any and everyone out for th efame and the $. Chris Rock became their good, funny, jestering nigger a LONG time ago. Sure, he has benefited well from it, but at what cost. He leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The network was trying to do the same thing with Dave Chapelle. they saw the lucrativeness of it all with Chris Rock, and thought they could keep the ball rolling. He made those w.boys **** bricks when he wouldn’t take the bait. Not only did he mess up their cash flow, but he bucked teh system in the process. That’s why they dragged his name through the mud like they did, saying he was crazy etc. They were pissed. And they’d rather think that he was crazy than believe that his character was stronger than their $50 mil. One fist up to Dave Chapelle…

Dave Chapelle is worth way more than 50 million dollars Tom Cruise makes 20 million a film Dave writes acts all that his name is on the show and on the line. Dave is from the old school when we lived by one rule: No Sellout!! Ask Ice Cube bout this sometimes to be a man you have to stand alone!

I have to say that I now believe even more in the “Chappell Theory”. He made reference to “they” alot and when he talked about social/ethical responsibility, Oprah sat up in her chair and asked him to EXPLAIN. I have no doubt that she had him on the show to dispell the rumors and its just like her to flex her power and have him come bow to her….just to remind him of who he was fuckin’ with. She said she thought his sketch of her was hilarious….yeah right Oprah…..just like you boycotted Hermes because they had something against “Africans”…riiiiiiiggghhhtt.

@ aphatty
I’m on the fence about Oprah’s behavior in this interview. She (like we say in dc) “carried his azz” several times-with that sanctamonious (sp-aint got time to spell check) social responsibility and the Klan. And his approach to the DVD sales and giving money away etc etc. Its like she owns the black social responsibility barometer.
and like “Anonoymous Poster” wrote the sheer fact he potentially gave up 50 mil-means something symbolically- it meant he wasn’t in fact reckless. He is a provocateur but thats the point he pushes buttons to create meaningful conversation…He’s a genius because he makes it pallitable for black intellects and the brothas/sistahs in urban america USA–while also causing whites to ponder–with the exception of the fool who laughed a little to hard and different (I TOTALLY GOT THAT). Brilliant is not even the word.
And this block party movie is just another example of where he is going….premise…invite middle america-cross ethnic cultural…people to a hip hop concert in NYC….I think it’ll be one of the most timeliest-genius pieces of documentary EVER. But it won’t feel like a PBS special…thats Chappelle’s true gift.
@Anonymous–totally agree well put. You made me really think about Chris Rock- who Oprah in fact loves (where is her black social responsibility thermometer with his azz???)…Chappelle is an open target because you can tell he approaches this craft with a pure heart. There are few artists that still have that…Oprah aint even got it.

The Chappelle’s Theory is purely idiotic. I am shocked to hear so many people say that they believe it. It ridiculous!!
And what is this about Chris Rock? He is as much of a social critic as Dave Chappelle, more so, if you ask me. However, Chappelle focuses his comedy mostly on blacks, while Chris Rock has scathing observations for everybody. They are hardly polar opposites.

^ I don’t necessarily call it the Chappelle Theory… I call it “Life As We All Know It Particularly If We Are Not Living Under A Rock”
….And maybe its understood by Black Folks living in this country with a certain amount of material wealth and success…I hate the theoritical part of it because if you sit back and disect the shyt you will go INSANE. But it truley is what it is…Dave isn’t maybe as academic or eloquent but all he spit was pure and unadulterated truth and to miss it means that….. well….(I’ll keep that to myself)
1.Most black men at some point and time in hollywood have been portrayed in a dress (or other effeminate ways that have nothing soley to do with the character-one exception is Sidney Poitier-I can see him getting up in arms about it) …again…Black men in the media) ARE eventually emasculated.
2. There’s pressure with making 50mil dollars. There’s pressue with making 145,000. He who has the gold rules….(and the rules get funny when you’re black PLEASE BELEIVE ME WHEN I TELL YOU) And the higher the money–the HIGHER THE STAKES…WHAT IS CONSPIRITORIAL about that–Comedy Central wanted to protect their investment. Dave left 50 mil because of the pressure because of the compromises and Comedy Central retaliated with “He’s Crazy”. That’s the cheapeset trick in the book “we can’t have him..and no one else will WANT him.”
3. This really all goes back to the state of race in this country its economic and its color. The reason why Dave’s situation is more pronounced because he’s a black entertainer and white people are comfortable with entertaining images…thats always been our way out…But there’s power behind socially conscious..meaningful and provacative entertainment.
And in my opinion Rock is smart….but he does a lot of coonin’, A lot of shukkin and jivin and alot of his stuff isn’t all that balanced…meaning he tells a lot of “niggas are so dumb jokes”…most having to do with conspicuous consumption–blah blah blah..Chappelle’s stuff is a lot fresher and socially revelant in my opinion.

@ ginger– be for real. If you see more evidence of intelligence in Chris Rock than Dave Chappelle, it says something about you. Just like ‘i’m not her’ said, he does a lot of shucking and jiving, he’s just a jester, he wants to make everybody laugh and make some cash. Chris Rock could give two licks about sending a message. Although I’m sure if one slides in there form time to time it’s cool. Dave makes a CONSCIOUS effort to reach people and make them think even those that don’t want to. But it takes a certain level of intelligence and most importantly awareness to recognize it.

oprah can give good advice about drugs usage since she is a recovering crack hoe. she done done it all, baby. she was a hoe-she smoked crack-she lied about her family-she lied about stedman-she a possible dike…and on and on. she is the poster child for black people problems, honey.

ok… i know a lot people will probably be offended when i say this- but oh well.
oprah don’t ‘luhv’ black people… unless you are ridiculously successful or critically acclaimed already (when you are black) you can’t even get on the show… whereas a white waitress from east bumblef*ck gets an entire episode for knowing how to play tiddlywinks.
and when someone black finally is invited to be on the show, she is NOWHERE near as warm & ‘genuinely’ interested in the interview. if you notice, she sometimes acts like she doesn’t want ‘us’ to touch her or become too familiar, unless you are like maya angelou or nikki giovanni… and she spends a lot of time talking over the other person & making certain they KNOW her stack is bigger than their stack.
also don’t forget oprah already owns a network and it hasn’t done much for the state of african-american entertainment & perceptions in the media. as much as i love watching oxygen, it’s almost like watching lifetime…
none of things i have mentioned negate the fact that oprah is a blessing to the world and has done many wonderful things, for the black community & the commmunity, as a whole.
but let’s be real- ain’t no love bit*@h. she feels that she is righteous enough to judge & ‘punish’…

This is the kind of dialogue that I find fascinating.
I regularly post at VH1 Soul. It seems that that board is overrun and steered by whites who think that anything with a black face is quality R&B. That board is like a stick-in-the-mud compared to the topics raised in this thread.
Maybe someone from THIS board can drop in @ VH1 Soul and critique my “debate” with a white poster who likes to bring up a subject he knows nothing about…racism.
The thread is on VH1 Soul page 2 of 3 and titled: AS FAR AS HOUSE MUSIC GOES…
I’d like to hear what “im not her” thinks…of what I wrote in my “AS FAR AS HOUSE MUSIC GOES” on THIS board because folks are afraid to deal with “race” at VH1 Soul.
Imagine that for a “Soul” board?
