WAS HOWARD TOLD NOT TO SING??
Friday, March 3, 2006
Eva Longoria claims Poitier, others said it would be embarrassing for blacks.

Remember last month when I made a post about how Terrence Howard didn’t want to sing at the oscars? Well supposedly, the reason behind his decision was because a lot of A-List black actors told him not to. Read this:
According to the UK’s Mirror newspaper, Howard’s homegirl Eva Longoria said the actor was approached by several black stars, including Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington and Will Smith, who have asked him not to perform the song during the telecast.
“Sidney Poitier said, ‘Do not get up there and represent the African American community singing about a pimp,’” Longoria told the newspaper (read more)..
See now this makes sense, Terrence didn’t have to lie to kick it, talking about “We don’t have time in the schedule to work all that stuff out, It took me seven months to find DJay and find that voice. I don’t think I could give it the full service that I gave it in the film.” What irks me about this whole situation, is that Black people are STILL going to perform the song. So technically, the African-American community is still going to be represented. They all have a point, but it makes me feel like they believe Terrence Howard is too good to perform the song. I dunno, that’s just how I take it in. Who knows how vaild Eva Longhoria’s claims are, I’m just saying..
In other news, Actress, Taraji P. Henson will be hitting the stage as well; singing the chorus of the song; like she did in the movie. Tune in this Sunday, March 5th to see how this all unfolds…

When did Eva Longoria become a spokesperson. Does TH know that she is putting him on blast? If you are his friend, and he says he is too busy - let him keep that lie going. Eva, are you looking for another job in case this Desperate Housewife thing falls through?
I love how the Academy wont let them say “shit,” but they can say “bitches,” because, as we all know “bitches” isn’t offensive. Three-Six meant it with love and admiration.

i don’t see what difference it makes that eva longoria delivers the message, could be she had the information on it…frankly, when black actors of howard’s generation become the elder statesman of the black hollywood community, then maybe songs and movies wit pimps and hoes and dealers will be somethin blacks will be proud to represent. go back and read what dave chappelle said about some white person laughing at him, instead of with him like he thought the guy was doing. you may see one thing in that song, but people who hold on to hateful, demeaning stereotypes will always see something else, and you should never give them ammunition to shoot you down!!! rekkanize!!!

Thank god he isn’t doing it. Leave the bullshit to the rappers. They’ll get away with it more. I wouldn’t want to see a talented black actor like Terrence take a step back by getting into character and talking that BS.

i understand he dont want to be the 2006 mr. bojangles but this song got him the nomination right? it seems here that ohh no we dont want to portray black as pimps but thats what he played in the movie i would suggest that he sings a small part with 3 6 mafia hell that movie and song made him alot of money

First of all the song did not get him a nomination. His role in the movie did. secondly I agree with him not doing it and giving a classy answer as to why. Had he given a negative statement about why he wouldn’t do it then it would have created negativity towards the movie and everyone invlolved and may have cost 3-6 whatever to lose there chance. Also he did not make alot of money. This was a low budget movie who only went to the theatre b/c it gained alot of support at the Sundance Film festival. I think him getting on the stage would glamorize the pimp life and that is not what the movie did. It told a story about a pimp who wanted to get out. Now they want him to jump up and down on the stage singing about life as a pimp. I don’t think it is necessary and by doing that it would take away from the intended meaning of the movie. I’m not mad at 3-6 for doing it b/c it is getting them some attention but I would be really embarassed if he got out there.Leave the pimp talk to people who call themselves niggaz and pimps.

@ opinionated…so its ok to play a pimp not to sing about being one….yes low budget in the beginning now making money hand over fist now….everyone says what us black people should or should not play…..hell the black dude off of sesame street played a pimp in a movie…its just a role thats it and everone is makin a big ass deal over it…i understand that america sees us as ingrates with no education….if all actors feel that way then none of them should go for movies when they are pimps, gangsta, hustlers, hoes etc….

Ummm…I’m not sure but, how many actors actually preform a nominated song, if a legitament recording artist recorded the track for the official contract. The fact that he’s not going to take part in this coonery isn’t suprising–Tom Hanks didn’t perform his song from Toy Story, the guy who wrote it and made the OST version did. Last year NONE of the artists/actors performed their own songs…Beyonce did. I think we are making more out of this then is necessary. Hip Hop should be happy that a song even got nominate. Black people should be a little unconfortable that a song that proclaims, “Woop that Trick!” is the first rap song to be performed at the Oscars.

First off - dumb song from a dumb movie. It all stinks of blaxpoitation and blaxpoitation round 2 isn’t necessary. “Are you Serious?” speaks the truth, who cares if anyone says Bi***? As long as they are talking about black women its ok isn’t it? Black women are at the bottom of the social scale anyway so who cares?
It’s bad enough now that I have to hear bi***, ni***, ho etc blasting out from shop speakers when I’m surrounded by white people. People have lost their damn minds. If I EVER hear a white person say Ni*** singing along to one of them dumb songs…I still owe JLo some harsh words for when she said it on one of her songs.

Terrance Howard is not just an actor but a very educated black man. He was a chemical engineer.
He would be a fool to not take advice from seasoned black actors.
Its called DIPLOMACY and tact thats why he gave the answer he gave. something Eva lacks she is ghetto trash and this is not the first time she opened her big mouth when she should have kept it shut.
Singing that song in a tuxedo with his son in the audience…Nah.. that would ruin his career.
There are a billion people watching this show around the world.
He has to be a business man and make career choices that will sustain his career not destroy it.

I DONT THINK HE SHOULD PREFORM THE SONG EITHER ,MATTER FACT 36 MAFIA SHOULD NOT PREFORM THE SONG.THE OSCAR’S IS NOT THE PLACE!NOW THE BET OR THE SOURCE AWARDS WOULD BE MORE EXCEPTABLE.THE ONLY REASON THEY WANT 36 MAFIA TO PREFORM IS FOR BLACK RATEINGS.REMEMBER LAST YEAR WHEN CHRIS ROCK HOSTED THE SHOW AND JAMMIE WON.THAT WAS THE FIRST TIME I WATCHED THE OSCAR’S.THEY HAD MORE BLACK RAITINGS THEN EVER BEFORE.WE HAVE BEEN SLIGHTED AT THE OSCAR’S FOR YEARS AND THEY WANT US TO PREFORM A PIMP SONG,PLEASE!
IF THEY WANT MORE BLACK RAITING’S THEN THERE NEEDS TO BE MORE BLACK NOMONIES.WE NEED TO BE REPERSENATED A LITTE MORE BETTER THAN THAT.AS FAR AS THE BET AWARDS I THINK HE’LL DO IT,BUT NOT AT THE OSCARS.

This is not the first rap song to be nominated for an Oscar. Lose Yourself by Eminem was actually the first. Eva Longoria should’ve kept her mouth shut, why is Nasty Tramp Nasty speaking for the black community anyway, she thinks just because she sucked off a few brothas it gives her right to be speaking, I say HOE SIT DOWN. I’m not a fan of 3 6 Mafia by far but let them have their moment. I think too much is being made out of this whole issue. I don’t think the role TH played in the film negates us as a people, it’s just one aspect of life, any life, black or white. White folks have been winning oscars for years playing unsavory characters.

*Special K and others: They are not performing “Whoop that Trick” “Its Hard Out Here for a Pimp” is a completely different song just so you know. They both have negative connotations, and no positivity. I wish “Keep Hustlin Keep Flowin” would have been nominated (it already won the SAG award which Terrence graciously accepted along with the writer)because that is an uplifiting song with a positive message Also, this is not the first hip-hop representation at the Oscars–remember Eminem won for best original song for Lose Yourself.

Why do we as black people always have to conform to what the white man thinks is right. We are pimps, we are educated, we are mothers and fathers. This pimp shit is real. I want 3-6 to win and I want them to represent whats real. We were gold teeth, (some of your moms may have them), talk with a slang. If Emimenem can get his ass on the Oscar stage and rap about nothing, why cant 3-6 represent where they are from. i feel what everybody is saying i dont thing the song should be performed at the “O” but rather at the “BET awards” or even the “MTV”, butsides the point the fact of the matter is that Terrance H. handled the situation very well by not singing at the “O” he felt that it wasn’t right to sing and so he turned it down and i myself enjoyed the movie as well as some of the songs he did in the movie..

My thing is, isn’t he nominated for playing a pimp? So if they cared so much about the image of the African American, they should’ve told him not to take the role. And in that case, we wouldn’t be talking about him being nominated. Why should we be embarrass about the song, when it’s based on a movie (a fictious story).

I’m sorry but if Sidney Poitier tells me not to sing a song….I’m not singing the song. True the song will be sung but by a group who does this by trade.
White America needs to be spoon fed VERY carefully images that we portray. Most of them have never seen this movie. And many a non-progressive white will use this (if Terrence sings) to paint us with a very VERY broad brush.
It would be different if they could disassociate us from sterotypical images and being able to have intelligent conversations about them…but this ain’t Wonderland…nor is hollywood paved on a yellow brick road.
Our images still need to be safeguarded and put into proper perspective.
So let 3-6 sing the song and let Terrence do what Mr. Sidney said. It provides the correct juxtaposition. I’m sorry thats life folks.
In a grown up world life really is about image. Thats when you’re selling real estate, an idea, a concept, a movie, your next character role, yourself on your next job.
Its not pretty but its life.

All i can hope. is if 3-6 Mafia does perform this song, they will try to find a way..TRY TO FIND A WAY..to classy the song up…maybe in the presentation..cause they wont change the lyrics. I think Terrence did the right thing because it is a rarity if it has happened ever before at all, for a nominated actor to perform a musical selection at the Oscars, regardless of whether they sang it in the movie or not. And I cosign that if Sidney Poitier asks me not to do something, I’m not doing it. I’m a believer in free artistic impression and I know that in 2005 there are a wide variety of images of African-Americans readily available on TV, in music, and in film. We have 36 Mafia, but we have Erykah Badu. We have men playing pimps, but we have men playing heroes (Malcolm X, etc.) We have rappers making music like 3-6 Mafia and we have Kanye West. If you watch “Grey’s Anatomy” you see three black people playing high-level surgeons in a show created by a black woman. BUT…for hip-hop to have its moment on a global stage in front of a whole bunch of people who don’t have the access to the variety of images that we do, it’s a shame that an entire genre of music will be represented in that way. The message that we are sending unintentionally or not is that we are a group of people who allow music to be prominently distributed in our community that disrespects and degrades black women. I love Terence Howard’s work in and out of “Hustle and Flow” which I walked out of. I just didn’t want to spend any more time watching a movie about lowlife pimps and ho’s. I’m not interested, nor do I need the white man’s validation to show me a good actor when I’ve seen him shine in many roles before.
I wish Terrence the best because he deserves it for all the work he’s been putting in. I wish 3-6 Mafia the best since they have been selected for this global stage. I just wish that we better understood that as another poster pointed out, imaging is everything. I would have felt better represented as a black person by someone else.

It’s a disgrace that black entertainers are so willingly to portray images that degrade the black community. The same images that black fought so hard against. We have a choice now; blacks didn’t have any options before. Madea’s Family Reunion is #1 at the box office, and we’re on T.V., movies, and videos cooning! Ignorance has become a badge of honor. We willingly degrade ourselves, our community, and our women. Three Six Mafia is blind and ignorant.

“Rodney King is probably rolling over in his grave because of this.”
The last I heard, Rodney King was still alive…
And why would it be okay for the song to be performed at the BET Awards or the MTV Awards, but not at the Oscars? It would still be an ignorant song, no matter where it was performed.
That said, the song is still an important element of the film, and I can see why it was nominated– there weren’t many notable movies out last year, so the academy had to go with what they had…
I just don’t understand why the producers of the ceremony just have to have that song performed during the show… unless it’s just some ploy to keep black people from complaining about yet another thing… (since we complain every year about the lack of black actors and films being nominated, the least they could do to placate us would be to nominate the most popular song from a movie, even if it was a shitty song).

1). We can’t police the word Nigga, so stop making it an issue. Its getting tiresome.
2). Hustle & Flow was about the struggle of a Black man, his un-discovered talent, drive, focus, patience, faith, and centering ones life around positivity. People of all
walks of life can identify with the movie, which is why its up for a nomination.
3). Keep Black image positive? We have the worst statistics of HIV, poverty, abortions, teenage pregnancy, single parenting/partnering, academic testing, etc. We have our own network(BET) and look how non-progressive and sterotypical that network is..
4). White people will continue to see Black’s negatively if we only progress as INDIVIDUALS like Oprah instead of as a WHOLE like the Jews. Why are you guys so concentrated on what White people think. I guess all that BET imagery of Blacks is fun and games until someone gets hurt.
5). The song, Life as a Pimp isn’t a negative portrayal of Black community and culture. Its realistic like 2Pac w/ Brenda Had A Baby and My Girlfriend. Those lyrics are the Raw, Real, Unedited version of the truth. Shout out to 2Pac for that.
6). Pimpin isn’t just for PIMPS. White people have been pimpin Black folks and Black culture since the days of slavery. So don’t think they won’t be able to identify with the song. FYI. R. Kelly has been presenting pimpish ways in his videos and he does it with class. The Hustle & Flow song can be also done that way @ the Oscars.

“3). Keep Black image positive? We have the worst statistics of HIV, poverty, abortions, teenage pregnancy, single parenting/partnering, academic testing, etc. We have our own network(BET) and look how non-progressive and sterotypical that network is..”
Do your resesarch before making statements like this.

You always got some Negroes that are ready to “COON” at the drop of a dime. Yes, 3-6 Mafia in effect will be cooning at the Oscars. And yes, Terrence Howard is “Too Good” to get up there and coon and RUIN his chances to ever win an Oscar. For all those who don’t agree, think about all the years that blacks weren’t allowed to even come to the Oscars, and don’t give me that “Oh, its 2006″ shyt. Negroes need to learn some history and wake up. 1964 was only 41 years ago. For those not familar with that, google: Civil right act of 64 and voting rights act of 64. All this being said, stop thinking that when black folks is given an opportunity that its always in your best interest. Especially for those in the sports and entertainment industry, its usually for cooning purposes.

Are we as black people not allowed to try and improve the image of our community? Anytime somebody makes a comment about how doing such and such makes us look bad or how we shouldn’t be doing certain ignorant things in public, some ignorant azz person gotta say, “Who is he or she to say that”. Bill Cosby was exactly right with his comments about our community. But those who don’t ever want black folks to improve ourselves (i.e. - niggaz) got something contrary to say. “Don’t talk about our folks in public, you will embarras us”. It’s about time some of us address this keeping your mouth shut “B.S.”.
To quote Chris Rock, “I like Black People, Can’t Standy Niggaz”!

To the people talking about Sidney Poitier.
What da fugg do you know about representing the black race. This man done more for us than you internet commenting azz niggas. Get out and do some community service. Poitier done more for us than 10 or 12 of yall. Ain’t nobody perfect. So what he married to a white woman. Your great great great grandmother probably was getting frequent visits from “Master”. No disrespect, but since we making comments, lets be real. The reason why no black leaders in our community has emerged because we always tearing down our own (i.e. - Watts, Harlem, L.A. Riots)
I don’t know what it is about our community where we are always tearing down our own shyt!

i personally believe that this whole thing is so stupid. the movie is about a pimp. the song captures the whole essence of the movie. as a black man and an actor, i believe that black people should stop fronting. yea its black pimps yea its white pimps. i personally dont think the academy is up there trying to “humiliate the black community” by nominating the song. the song perfectly captured that whole film and it deserved to be nominated in my opinion. and i can understand terrance howard not singing the song because he doesnt have the time to go to that place again as an actor.

I have a different perspective. I think the “Academy” is afraid of Terrence Howard’s talent and potential power. He’s a breakthrough actor with an artistic mind. They know good and well that he was the best actor in Crash. But if they give him that nomination, the world will take him seriously. The world will know that it’s not a fluke. He was great in Crash and great in Hustle, but in Crash, he portrayed a successful, if troubled, articulate, human being.
Matt Dillon did not deserve the nonimation. He’s basically nominated for molesting (graphically) a black woman on screen. Terrence’s character was a complex soul walking the tightrope of fitting in while being hated by his own for doing what he has to do to fit in. Matt Dillon’s nomination over Terrence and Don Cheadle, was a slap in the face. The Academy knew that so they threw Terrence a bone; OK you can have your nomination, but only for playing the pimp.
Just like Halle was allowed to win one for humping Billy Bob Thornton. Terrence was great in both movies, but the Academy only wants him to be represented in a way that benefits the Good Ole Boys of Hollywood. It’s politics, people.
The more I think about Crash, the madder I get. A movie in which the most horrible things happen to the black people (rape, death, drug addiction, beatings, etc.) while the other races simply get insulted or threatened, and the only person with a nomination is a white person that did some of the harm in the movie?! That would be as cruel as Ralph Fiennes’ Nazi character being the only single nomination to come from Schindler’s List.
Sure, this isn’t really serious stuff. The Oscars is just a sham to make Hollywood appear classier than it is; that’s why it was created in 1928. The working people were campaigning to drive these nasty assed, scandal creating actors and filmakers out of town. So, if it’s just for show and supposed to be a big party, why do they invite only a few of us every now and then and make us serve the punch?

I think the reason the song was nominated was so that the entire known world could see how ignorant black folks are in 2006 no less. If Taraji had any sense she would have declined to participate in the shenanigans too. The movie was one thing, but saying “hey, ho, hey, ho, now throw ya hands in the air if you’re a pimp and ya just don’t care…” is quite another thing indeed.

And if many of you had watched the movie and actually got the message … it wasn’t a movie about pimping per se, if was a cinematic version of how we as the human race are either being pimped by society or we are pimping it for what it’s worth … meaning we are not allowing our circumstances to hinder us from following our dreams. Regardless of age, race, gender or class, as long as God blesses you with life, and you still have a dream, LIVE IT TO THE FULLEST!
You know it’s hard out here for a pimp, when you trying to get the money for the rent
Before the cash and the gas money’s spent, you’ll have a whole lotta bitches jumping ship!
OSCAR WINNING

@ Cliff. No I do not think it is right for us to play the part of pimps and whores when it is being glamorized but I don’t feel that was the case in this movie. He wasn’t driving around in expensive cars and flahing all this bling. He wasn’t making it and wanted out. I think he told the story well and b/c of that I liked the movie. Too many of these rappers are glamorizing this lifestyle and we don’t hold forums for that but this man plays a part in a movie and it is called coonery and all kinds of stuff. I hope the same people who feel this way are not fans of people like Nelly, Snoop, and all of the other rappers that continue to degrade women in nmost of their songs.

–”I wonder if these same actors told him not to —-play a pimp.”
“i personally believe that this whole thing is so stupid. the movie is about a pimp. the song captures the whole essence of the movie. as a black man and an actor, i believe that black people should stop fronting. yea its black pimps yea its white pimps. … the song perfectly captured that whole film and it deserved to be nominated in my opinion. ”
I cosign SOME of your pst j.lil
All of these people on here are talking about, the song is “ghetto” blah, blah blah. Was him acting in the movie ghetto???
The song and the movie are NOT mutually exclusive. The song captures what the theme of the movie…”Hard out here” ??? I personally was not interested in the movie b/c like another poster said, It’s a white boy’s version of what’s going on in the hood. But what that snowflake did capture in his research is what’s true for much of ghetto life regardless of the enterprise..THE sTRUGGLE. THAT’S WHAT THE SONG IS ABOUT, THAT’S WHAT THE MOVIE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT. He got that point across loud and clear that’s why the Oscar community recognized it. Terrance ACCEPTED and ACTED that role for I am assuming the same reason. The song is an intricate part of that, if he can go there for the movie, then going there for teh song, now that an intricate aspect of society is being recognized by the Oscars should have been easy.
I also REALLY think actors like Signey Poitier and ESPECIALLY Will Smith (who played Bagger Vance) should keep their hush hush about WHAT REPRESENTS the black community. I think regardless of how ignorant, all types of hustlinghave their roots in something deeper than folks JUST being ignorant and having nothing better to do, and it is a good thing when those things get brought to the light.
HOWEVER…I saw the actual performance, with the women with their cheeks out and it was not a good thing. But not b/c of the song…I mean they let 666 mafia do it WTF? do you expect? I think if Terrace had STOOD up and taken apart of the performance he could have brought the point of the song out through the art for what it was meant to represent.

Yeah! I think the song was GhETTO!! I don’t think it deserved to be nominated. The movie wasn’t nominated. The actor was!!! He’s a good actor and maybe he needed the money that’s why he tood the part. But what’s done is done. I just hope it’s not done to many times.

CoCoBunny they just don’t understand. Anybody who thinks that the song was just about pimpin is ignorant as hell. That’s just the hook you bastards listen to the words and like CoCo said you will see that it is something you can relate to whether you are apimp or not. The song was a summation of D-Jay’s life which is much like ours. We bust our asses everyday and still don’t get the money we chasing and all the time we trying to stay afloat there are other obstacles threatining our freedom, our sanity, and our lives, that’s all the song is saying. I expect the ignorant ass white folks to not understand it and laugh about it, but for blacks, young blacks like us to not be able to look deeper into the song and get the indirect message is flabbergasting(S.A.T word). It’s Hard out Here for A Pimp is just a cool title for the song and all it is saying that It’s Hard Out Here for Blacks, that’s all. “WAKE THE HELL UP or SLEEP YOUR EXISTANCE WAY”

@opinionated, the movie didn’t glamourize pimpin, that nigga was strugglin, so where is the glorification. The movie was about a person strugglin to make a change in his life and just happen to be a pimp. I guess it would have been a better movie to you and all the other Highly Intellectual folks if he was a garbage man, but hell yall might complain and ask why a brother gotta be a trash man huh. It’s funny how we over analyze shit. The message was clear and the Oscar’s recognized that the meaning of the song was just what it was, the explanation of struggle which captured eveything the movie did. So once again, “WAKE THE HELL UP OR SLEEP YOUR EXISTANCE AWAY”
