Wow you called me a bitch. I think I’ll jump off a bridge now. Your vocabulary is so limited to cursing because you’re an uneducated moronic, imbecile. Grew up then speak to me little girl. It’s the internet not Celebrity Death Match.
India Arie needs to first change her first name cause she is not representing India in any shape or form. Indian women are far more attractive than her and do not share any of her features. She should be renamed “Africa Arie”.
That was some of the most ignorant, poisonous, idiodic, shit I’ve ever read…disgusting how warped your sense of beauty and culture are.
I thought that you were simple when I read the shit you talking about Celebs w/ their kids…but this takes a whole new low….
“India Arie needs to first change her first name cause she is not representing India in any shape or form. Indian women are far more attractive than her and do not share any of her features. She should be renamed “Africa Arie”.”
@ SANGONO, I was very impressed by your posts. THanks for truthfully speaking your mine, in an intelligent non degrading form. You said, exactly what needed to be said!!!
WOW, I STARTED READING THE POST AND WENT “WOW, EVERYONE IS BEING RESPECTFUL AND SAYING GREAT THINGS ABOUT INDIA ARIE”, AND THEN…
HONESTLY,PHYSICAL BEAUTY IS NOT THE FIRST THING I THINK OF WHEN I THINK OF INDIA, BUT THAT’S BECAUSE HER BEAUTY GOES BEYOND PHYSICAL STANDARDS. SHE BRINGS TO THE TABLE SOMETHING SPIRITUAL AND RICH, AND MAKES MUSIC THAT TOUCHES PEOPLE SOULS. THAT, MY FRIENDS, IS WHAT MAKES HER A BEAUTIFUL PERSON.I KNOW WE RAG ON PEOPLE ALL THE TIME AT THE CL, BUT SOME PEOPLE ARE MORE THAN THEIR HAIR…
I agree that black people HOLD DOUBLE STANDARDS…If you look like a slave than youre cool, but if you look like a model then we got to find every little imperfection we can think of. JUST LOOK AT THE OTHER POSTS…On beyounce posts, more women are talking about her looks or clothes instead of how talented she is as a singer….if she wasnt a talented singer, do you think she would sell records?? NO. you guys lack a logical arguement.
India Arie needs to first change her first name cause she is not representing India in any shape or form. Indian women are far more attractive than her and do not share any of her features. She should be renamed “Africa Arie”. Secondly, she may be talented but because she isnt attractive women on this post do not feel THREATENED like they do with beautiful blk women. If India was beautiful like Beyounce or KELLY than you bitches would try to find every little imperfection on them…..But you cant with India cuz her ENTIRE physical form is imperfect all together.
SHe has bad acne and bumpy skin
She has the nose width of a gorilla. (not joking)
She has the nastiest looking hair possible.
She has the ugliest teeth I have eva seen.
SHe has no eyelashes and eyebrows.
SHe has squinty eyes.
SHe basically looks like a younger WHoopi Goldberg
CAN WE SAY ” BUTTAFACE?”
Again, she might have talent but so do Beyounce, Mia, and ALicia Keys…But if you look at the comments under their topic, all you see are women trying to find flaws….
^^^^^^^^
OH GIVE ME A BREAK! WE LIKE INDIA ARIE BECAUSE SHE MAKES REAL MUSIC. TODAY’S HIPHOP HAS NOTHING BUT USELESS MESSAGES IN THEM; ITS ALL ABOUT PIMPING HOES ECT. SHE TELLS YOUNG GIRLS AND YOUNG WOMEN THAT THEIR BEAUTIFUL ………AS-THEMSELVES! THAT’S WHY SO MANY PEOPLE LOOK UP TO HER AND HER MUSIC. SHE’S HELPING OUT THE ILL VICTIMS IN KENYA AND OTHER PARTS IN AFRICA. WHAT ARE THESE SO CALLED HIPHOP AND SOME RNB ROLE MODELS DOING BESIDES SPORTING BLING BLING ALONG WITH THEIR COCKINESS? IM NOT SAYING ALL OF THEM ARE BUT THE MAJORITY IS OUT THERE. I WANT TO SEE MORE PEOPLE LIKE HER OUT THERE DOING SOMETHING POSITIVE WITH THEIR LIVES AND GIVING THESE YOUNG IMPRESSIONABLE YOUNG CHILDREN POSITIVE IMAGES. TELL THEM THAT THEY DON’T HAVE TO GAIN POWER AND RESPECT OR SEX, AND ENCOURAGE THEM TO DO RIGHT WITHT THEIR LIVES; THAT THEY KIDS CAN BE SOMEBODY IF THEY REALLY WORK HARD AT IT, I MEAN R-E-A-L-L-Y GIVE THE EFFORT. I DON’T SEE TOO MUCH OF THAT AROUND, AND FRANKLY ITS REALLY SAD. THAT’S WHY I LIKE INDIA ARIE. NOT BECAUSE OF HER SKIN COLOR AND HAIR TYPE(SIGH).
P.S. OH AND FOR THE RECORD I MYSELF AND LIGHTSKIN WITH ROOTS I AM VERY PROUD OF!;-)(OH AND THERE IS NOTHING UGLY ABOUT THE GIRL SO YOU REALLY NEED TO STOP BEING CRUEL)
as long as she’s comfortable it doesn’t really matter what other people think now does it? as long as she’s not wear coochie shorts or anything like that then she’s fine. I’m sure it was a hot day that’s why she wore that. Her breasts seem to be tightly secure lol. She’s good; It’s not too over-the-top.
Tulip Tulip Tulip,
Did you seriously say that it is christian to tell the truth about how ugly someone is? Sweetheart there is nothing christian about anything that you said. First of all, if you were truly christian-like you wouldnt be so concerned with a person’s looks, but rather their character. You think God approves of you calling one of his creation’s ugly? Secondly you DO NOT define what is beautiful and what is not, If you dont think someone is attractive, the christian thing to do is to find something nice to say despite that.
Thirdly, she can call herself whatever she wants. There are ppl in India who look more African than you think, and Africa is a huge continent with ppl of
many shades/looks. If you have a passport I would suggest you travel a bit. Fact: Africa is home to the most strikingly beautiful women and men on earth! Thats why so many world famous models from Africa are sought after , not so much India. Yes you are entitled to your opinion, but dont try to convince yourself or anyone else that your insignificant, ugly, brainwashed comments are christianly. You can fool yourself but thats about it. Oh yeah India Arie is one of most intelligent, lovely, and self respecting singers of our times. We should celebrate these women because they are a rare breed.
I stand by my earlier commenta about not making personal or degrading comments about these celebrities. YOU put your personality out there by your rude comments and that is why I felt the need to comment on your personality. The fact that you can call me a BITCH further proves my point. Everyone has internal issues that make then who they are but I feel good enough about myself that I don’t need to down famous people with the intent to validate myself.
I must admit admit I do take this negativity to heart b/c it is the same negativity that we as black women encounter on the street. The self hate that are projected upon us from out brothers and sisters. All we see is the exterior b/c we have been conditioned to think that the closer to white we are the more beuatiful we are. If you don’t like her that is fine. To name call is another thing all together. You don’t know her. I comment on what I know and from your and Tulips posts I see clearly what you are. If you look back I have never picked apart Beyonce or christina. They are both talented wopmen in there own right and I don’t have a negative comment about either. I truly respect women who have a vision and go about trying to achieve it so your point is not taken…It is redundant as are you. I also never challenged 50. I respect him as well. I do not think he us ugly at all. Misguided maybe but no ugly.
I guess I should apologize b/c it is not your fault You are just a product of your environment and have not yet become enlightened. I forgive you and I will pray that you open your eyes & get a clue.
Tulip you are too funny!! I know you don’t SERIOUSLY believe what you wrote “I agree that black people HOLD DOUBLE STANDARDS…If you look like a slave than youre cool, but if you look like a model then we got to find every little imperfection we can think of.”
You know on ALL these blogs people DOG the Williams sistas out NON STOP and they are FAR from model material!! LOL! It’s just someoe like India who is famous for being true to her self, NOT making popular bubble gum music that appeals to the masses and not a half naked skank gets much respect that many see her as beautiful even if it’s not the conventional kind of beauty.
Negra I have never met a indian person who looks african. pleaase. THE ONLY THING similar between africans and india indians is that india indians can be dark but check out their hair and eyes and nose….all anglo features , not african.. show me pics of PURE india women looking like india arie.
And no you didnt say that african women are sought after their beauty…do you have any clue how many Miss Universe/Miss World/Miss Earth competitions africans have won?? India has won more beauty pagneants than africans and guess what ? India is a country not an entire damn continent like africa. Bombay is the second model capital of the world and they aint blk: like AIshwarya Rai, Susmita Sen, Dupta or something…etc. I am not trying to degrade blk women cuz many beautiful blk women but the more beautiful are the ones with caucasion features…Alicia keys=caucasion facial features, Vanessa Williams, Tamara, etc have noses, eyes, facial structure that resemble anglo therefore considered more beautiful than India Arie.
In all honestly, the more african your features are , just like India Arie, the uglier you are….wide nostrils, protruding facial structure (the reason why the white ppl originally said blk ppl look like apes), nappy natural hair….
I dont want to hear you embracing African features as more desirable when blk ppl do things that totally negate that…if blk folks are happy with their genes why do a MAJORITY of blk women buy weaves ( usually a indian woman’s hair) ?? DOnt argue that white ppl wear weave too cuz only rich white women wear extensions but a majority of white women leave their hair as it is…and other races of women leave their hair natural like indian women I think yet blk women claim blk beauty is gorgeous yet CANT BE PROUD OF THE NATURAL NAPPYINESS???
Tulip, I like how stick to you addressing only your own opinion, which you are entitled too, btw, but left out any reference to your chritianity, which is what opinionated cut you up on.
Tulip by reading your comments I realize that your only a child. I want you to travel different parts of Africa so you can see how gorgeous these African women really are. The reason why you don’t see Afican women winning pageants is because the majority are raised to have more respect for themselves. You don’t realize that “OUR CULTOUR DOESN’T BLEND WITH OTHER COLTOURS, NOT JUST IN AFRICA BUT ALL OVER THE WORLD.” You really need to get a clue! The majority of black women …….” IN AMERICAN(DIFFERENT FROM AFRICA REMEMBER THIS) buy weaves because they are brain washed to believe that this is what makes them beautiful. That is simply not true honey. Beauty Is Self! God made you who you are for a reason, its up to you to either except that or try and change it. No one should try and be like someone else or the world wouldn’t be as diverse as it is. There are PLENTY of beautiful, gorgeous black women in the world but the media (powered by most whites and sellout black men & women)want you to believe that your ugly if you have darker skin and corse hair. That is just plain naiveness and for the most part stupidity. I call you honey because it’s hard for me to speak to you as a adult after reading you last comment. So many idiotic remarks. Read a book child, learn your roots (if you are African American). You may or may not know some Indians in America, but we have alot more in common then you might think child. In fact you’ll be quit surprised if you actually read up on our two coltours and or races. I suggest you do so because its a given that you don’t know anything about either race.
Cutter, Im a true christian. WHen god sent those 10 commandments, he didnt say, thou shall only make positive comments about ppl, he said , thou shall not lie. Why am I being prosecuted for living by god’s commandment? A true christian will live by god’s word no matter how much society doesnt like it. I spoke the truth and left no stone unturned.
Im a kind individual in person but that doesnt mean I wont be honest…if I meet you in person and you are an ugly looking person, I let you know by saying , ” you shou is ugly on the outside but you seem like a beautiful soul.”…Now thats living by god’s word. Being honest and loving thy neighbor. Lies make ppl smile but the truth might make you cry. THats the way it is. If somebody called me ugly(thou I think I look like ALliyah) , I would let them know that they are uglier….
I know ALL god’s creatures are beautiful even cockroaches and ugly ppl like India Arie.
Im no fool, I think I figured out what the underlying concern is here: christians are upset because India Arie proves to be the missing link between ape and human thus supporting evolution to some extent. Thus ppl want to attack me to distract themselves from the real issue.
Simplylovely, well I did read a lil on both cultures..African and indian and see no similarites…except that their cultures are both rich…but POLAR opposite….You are very mature in responding though…kudos for that..
You made a great remark on the whole “weave” thing…made sense…brainwashed is a good word cuz I think natural African hair is seen as “inferior” and thus many blk women feel a need to look less inferior and hence more attractive. Its sad, to be honest. I think India Arie is one of the few women who stick to her natural blk hair….
I dunno, I think Im just jealous of this girl for having the strength to be completely real and not care what ppl think of her physical appearance. Im gonna be honest, Im talking about her being “ugly” because Im envious of the fact that shes so secure in her skin and here I am trying to improve every feature society has critisized on me…I even tried skin bleach a few months ago to be lighter and contacts…I wish I could be more like INdia Arie in accepting myself, but the media and ppl around me make it hard to do so.
I have had girls critisizing every aspect of me so I do my best to make sure other ppl feel my pain by critisizing them on naive things. For them to be hurt about my comments on their appearance makes me feel better cuz it makes them insecure enough to not judge me..vicious cycle.
It’s sad what the true let’s out isn’t it? There is not need for ANYONE to go and bleach their skin! I really wish I could help you realize that you are of the Lord and that you have his face & body image with you, but It’s really up to you to brush it away and finally be happy with yourself. I really hope one day people will get rid of those ideal, materialistic concerns and grow smart to the fact that no one & no thing is perfect; You can never be perfect in this world. But you are beautiful because God is beautiful and he is you. Peace & Love
well I can’t seem to post it but I would like you to go to “http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/africa/africasbook.html” when you find the time. Maybe you can learn a small portion our coltour. But I suggest you try going to the library every now and again and picking up an historian book on Africa, and if you find the time the Native past as well. I think you will learn a bunch. I would love for you to read “The Egption Bood of the Dead.” Also “An Egyptian Hieroglyphic Dictionary” to learn about African names and their purpose (there are many volumes). Or just ask the librarian I’m sure she/he can tell you of some great books with tons of our history. We are no three second race to say the least (in other words we have alot to be proud of and a very large legacy). Please email me at “simplylovely_the1st@yahoo.com” if you have more to discuss with me about.
I CAN CARE LESS IF THAT PERSON IS WHITE OR BLACK OR ANY OTHER RACE, OR EVEN RACIST. I SUGGESTED THOSE BOOKS TO ANYONE WHO’S INTERESTED IN LEARNING. I WANT THOSE YOUNG AND OLD TO FINALLY GET A FULL UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT IT IS TO BE…..NOT BLACK, BUT AN AFICAN AMERICAN LIVING IN AMERICA; I WANT THESE YOUNG AFRO AMERICAN KIDS TO LEARN OF THEIR ROOTS…..TO LEARN PERIOD! ITS REALLY SAD HOW PREJUDICE PEOPLE CAN BE WITHOUT EVEN GETTING TO KNOW A PERSON. I HAVE ALOT OF HOPE FOR THE NEW GENERATION AND EVEN SOME OF THE OLDER ONES WHO HAVE GOTTEN THE PRIVLEDGE TO STILL BE HERE(RACIST GRANDFATHERS/MOTHERS FOR THOSE WHO DON’T UNDERSTAND ME). I WANT EVERYONE TO KNOW OF THE SACRIFICE AND SUFFERING THOSE BEFORE ME HAD TO ENDURE FOR ME TO FINALLY LIVE AS AN EQUAL. AND I WISH FOR MY CHILDREN TO CONTINUE LIVING AS EQUALS, AND THEIR CHILDREN & SO ON. WE NEED CHANGE PEOPLE, AS MUCH CHANGE AS POSSIBLE. IT ONLY GET’S WORSE WHEN YOU LET THINGS STAY THE WAY IT IS, OR USE HATE INSTEAD OF LOVE. WE HAD TO BE TOLERANT FOR A VERY LONG TIME(TOO LONG), THERE IS NO REASON FOR HATE AND THERE NEVER WAS. PEACE & LOVE GOES TO ALL
India is real and she is the truth. There is nothing ugly about her. I feel that we have been force-fed Eurocentric features for so long we fail to see our own beauty. I love her music, and yes..I do feel she was robbed of those Grammys but who cares? The true fans still love her and will be looking forward to the release of her new material.
tulip love yourself first and tell everyone else to kiss your behind. God made you and he does not make junk. society can be fickle and its likes and dislikes can change in the blink of an eye. but you be true to yourself and forget the dumb stuff. there is an element of beauty in everyone, regardless of skin color, eye color, or hair texture. we all need to embrace that more sometimes.
I think what I’m hearing from your blog is that, most artist have street smarts and very limited formal education, thus the message is common sense and primal at best. Artist like Marley, Pac, BIG and James Brown sang about the struggle, the game, the track, the strip and the hood! Some of the messages were positive and some were not!
Hip-Hop love songs are usually deduced to graphic displays on someones sexual chocolate and thunder. At least India said, “Brown skin, you know I love your brown skin I can’t tell where yours begins, I can’t tell where mine ends.” Something to think about, something to appreciate. She put us all on the same level.
And about the Grammy’s, let’s face it…India is not mainstream like Alicia! India’s appeal is under a spotlight with just her guitar on small round stage in a members only club with 300 loyal fans willing to pay $1500 each for the chance to hear her sing and talk about life for two hour.
Comparing her to Alicia is like comparing Marvin to Michael or Anita to Mariah…ones mainstream and the other one is in a speciality genre.
@ Julia_Claudine_Deveraux
You said it right proper and to the point!
I actually can appreciate your last response because it shows how young you are and how much more you need to learn about culture and loving yourself.
Obviously a person who has such self hate issues and who will go as far as bleaching themselves will say such venomous things like “India Arie is the missing link btwn apes and human” (WTF)
I see that you are smart enough to realise that because of your own self hate you feel insecure and bring yourself up by tearing people down, but now that you know that about yourself, it is up to you to make a change for the positive…STOP THE MADNESS!!
I am not religious but if you are supposed to be a christian, you are supposed to say things and do things that glorify God and uplift your fellow brothers and sisters showing them the love of Christ.
But when the love of Christ doesn’t even live in you, you become a poor representation of your faith. Christians are to be followers of Christ and he is love, not hate, negativity, and ignorance.
>>>And no you didnt say that african women are sought after their beauty…do you have any clue how many Miss Universe/Miss World/Miss Earth competitions africans have won?? Damn Tulip, it is truly surprising that you would be SO PROUD of the brainwashing given you by Western society!!
I mean, are you seriously saying that the most beautiful black people are the ones who look the most like white people? Surely you realize that isn’t true, right? Surely you know that white people have sold you (and your oh-so-revered Indians, ever heard of the caste system?) the idea that their features are beautiful, right? Of course, you know that doesn’t make it true, right? The only reason YOU think Indian women are more beautiful than African women is because they have straight hair, maybe different color eyes, lighter complexions, e.g. features that look white.
Bombay the second model capital? What the hell are you talking about? Do you even know? One would be hard-pressed to find an Indian model on the runways of Milan or Paris or New York. African models abound (because the fashion world deliberately tries to deviate from COMMERCIAL representations of beauty to more ARTISTIC representations).
You need to realize that your ignorant ass opinion is just that, YOUR OPINION. If you think Alicia Keys is more beautiful than India Arie because she looks closer to white, that’s your wholly-swallowed conditioning that you have to contend with.
The more educated and intellectual of us have freed our minds, and we don’t allow white people to tell us what to think about beauty or anything else. Clearly YOU do. Just realize that you (and EVERYONE else out there who “thinks” like you) are a pathetic, weak-minded embarrassment to the black community.
India.Arie is a rare, phenomenal talent with a beautiful voice. The songs she writes are so honest and wise. The song “Strength Courage and Wisdom” from her first CD really motivated me. I still play it whenever I need a little inspiration. I completely admire her, she’s a true artist.
Every time I get on this website it’s the same argument. Black folks are so “worried” about the things that are so unimportant.
I tell you black folks; we are going to always be “Hurricane Katrina victims” aren’t we? Not a dime to our names (as a whole), but standing out there without a pot to piss in. Not even $100 to your name to buy a bus ticket to get your black ass out of town! Looking for the government to save you. Yeah we all pay taxes, but at the end of the day you have to be responsible for your well being.
If we could only focus on what’s important like education and lucrative job etc…Instead of “if I get with this person my children will be light skin with good hair” or “how cute I’m gonna look when I buy my next hoochie momma alfit”….
Tsk, tsk, tsk…Why are we so mean to each other? Instead of spitting all of this “activism” and “intellect” over India.Arie (beauty is in the eye of the beholder, let us not forget) why not get “mad” about the fact that our children are dropping out of school at an alarming rate? Why not show outrage at the fact that it’s 2006 and we still have things like racial profiling? Why not show outrage at a country who wants to make Blacks the PERMANANT underclass?? Come on, people, she’s a human being just like the rest of us..God don’t like ugly and this is just U-G-L-Y!
I hear y’all and agree, but seriously, this IS a celebrity gossip blog. There are blogs that address the other, more serious issues surrounding the black community.
I think some of us (like myself) ARE concerned with those issues, but they are massive. You get burned out trying to grapple with such things, and this is a relatively harmless way to blow off steam.
Besides, as educated as some of us are, we still need occasional reminders of the fact that there is still profound ignorance within the black community (which our friend Tulip was gracious enough to provide) to help us renew our focus.
Tulip - You are poor representation of Christianity, humankind and womanhood. It’s a shame that you lack the intellectual or spiritual development that would allow you to recognize the true ignorance of your comments and the thinking that produced it.
Sangano you are sad as well.
But again, it just proves how prevalent the slavery mentality is and how despite years of “freedom” many of us are still mentally enslaved. I’ve seen so much hatred on these boards all in the name of entertainment. I’m not religious, but I’m beginning to think it’s entertainment for the Devil. He must be rejoicing at watching all this self-hatred.
For the record, I’ve met India, Beyonce, Alicia, Fantasia and Kelly. They are all beautiful women in their own individual ways. As the old saying goes beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Some of you need to behold yourselves a little more closely and gauge the true ugliness within.

My messages alone simply state facts that todays hiphop artists don’t really care anymore about putting positive things out there. I’m not saying all hiphop artist are, but I can say the majority. I realize that India Arie isn’t as large as Alicia Keys. That’s not the point; I’m sure she doesn’t really care about the large fame. But I wonder what Alicia is doing for those who are unfortunate. I can not tell you when I last heard a hiphop song that didn’t have woman do things undinified in the lyrics. I’ll say something nice about those types of people when I start to see change. Until that day comes their music disgusts me. Oh and Alicia hasn’t been out that long for you to be making those types of comparisons. I hope I don’t come of as being rude or mean in anyway. This is just the way I feel. I hope to see change for the better with today’s youth, if God forbid their isn’t I can only fear the worse. Peace & Love!
India will be playing at The Bowery Ballroom in Manhatten on June 15, tickets are only $30 dollars, got mine already…This will be my third time seeing her. Industry people are raving about her new album, damn, I cant wait.
india is the truth. i am so thankful for her music. she is in the mix with stevie wonder, george benson and donny hathaway. i LOVE her and i hope to meet her one day to tell her how her music has changed my life! she is so positive and beautiful and real.

That “top” is wrong though. When will people start dressing for their bodies? It doesn’t do her justice at all.

as long as she’s comfortable it doesn’t really matter what other people think now does it? as long as she’s not wear coochie shorts or anything like that then she’s fine.

At Sangano:

I would love for you to read “The Egption Bood of the Dead.” Also “An Egyptian Hieroglyphic Dictionary” to learn about African names and their purpose (there are many volumes). Or just ask the librarian I’m sure she/he can tell you of some great books with tons of our history.

@ Tullip,
I actually can appreciate your last response because it shows how young you are and how much more you need to learn about culture and loving yourself.

So, cut us some slack.
