My Goodness Alek Wek is gorgeous! Yeah, I agree on the confusion about how black Americans for the most part have to be “challenged” to see the beauty in someone like Alek but will imediately gush over a black woman with light skin, “pretty” green eyes, and a blonde weave or wig. It’s sad but a lot of white people would see the beauty in Alek before many black Americans and that not only is a shame but it speaks volumes.

Alek Wek looks like a work of art. How beautiful is she!?!? I’ve always been inspired by her (people tell me I look like her…no really) So I know first hand what you guys are talking about. I had a hard time in high school dating (I grew up in the south where the light skinned thing is really bad), but men up north (I like in NYC) are definately more receptive to beautiful dark chocolate, shinny flawless skinned women like myself. But to those that are still stuck with that slave mentality of thinking light skin is it when it comes to beauty, please open your eyes….black women are to be revered.

Anybody know how old Alex is? I remember her when she first started modeling about 25 years ago if it’s the same girl. At that time she was about 13 or 14. Making her somewhere around 35 or 40. She can’t be that old! If she is, she’s really really a beautiful black Godess!

At first, I did not think Alek Wek was super pretty.
Like most African or “exotic” models, she would always be photographed in outrageous prints and horrific makeup. But stripped down to the bare, she IS gorgeous and I am somewhat critical. I believe that SHE can win a faceoff with many r&b divas and actresses when no makeup/hair is applied.
I think Kelly is pretty too. I am not going to say that she is more gorgeous than Beyonce b/c they both are pretty girls. I will, however, say that I do think Beyonce is naturally gorgeous (check the few photos of her back in the day). Kelly has come up drastically to beautyqueen status…Isn’t it a shame that everyone is saluting her after she chopped off have her nose and grew some hair?
Even when we don’t want to, we are trapped in white ideas of beauty.

I hope Alex Wek will write a biography one day. I’m sure it would be interesting.

I guess I have to disagree. I don’t think Alek Wek is beautiful, nor do I feel that because she’s that dark and signifies true “African beauty,” that it should change my view. I especially hate to see them spread that bright red lipstick on her. It reminds me of someone in blackface and to see her like that makes me feel like photographers/magazines/advertisers do it to be funny.

I think there are so many different ranges to African-American beauty, and I’m sure Alek Wek has her place somewhere. Sorry to disagree, but at least I did it the right way AND I’m not 13.

A few of my friends and I have short hair cuts like Alex Wek, and trust me, we have ALOT of hair products. what little hair we have, we like it to be healthy.

Alek Wek isnt ur conventional type beauty but she is stunning. Her bone features and her skin is just gorgeous.

O.K., I’m not here to paint her with the black crayon or hit her with the ugly stick…so to speak, but I don’t think she’s anything exceptional. Simply because she has deep brown skin or is not from the United States just doesn’t make her stand out to me. She just looks alright. I do, however, vaguely remember the Oprah interview and was turned off by it, because Oprah was acting like she was so shocked that a person of Alek’s complexion from Africa could become a successful runway model; she came off like Alek was from out of space or something. I say so what? It’s the fashion industry, and at least from watching “ANTM”, designers choose models that they believe are most talented or represent their products best. Sometimes it’s caucasian pale, and sometimes it’s the deepest negro shade they can find, or maybe somewhere in between. I look at the height of her popularity the same way I look at the other models. I was determined to be a lurker because of some of the craziness typed in here and the word “hater” along with Beyonce idol worshipping irked the heck out of me (lol) but….

I have tried desperately to see the “beauty” in Alek Wek well before this post. I think a large portion of that is because I felt obligated to think of her as beautiful because she is dark and she is african. My OPINION is still that Alek Wek is not “Beautiful” TO ME. The pics in #66 solidified this for me. If she were lighter complected, white, asian or whatever I still would not think of her as “beautiful”. Her complexion is marvelous but her face and features as a whole just is nothing special TO ME. This coming from a 29 year old woman. Having said that…

I can certainly understand the pain of my dark skinned sisters. Although I am not a darker person myself, my oldest sister is dark complected. I always thought she was beautiful. I would put oil on my skin as a child and stay out in the sun to get darker like her. I hated when people would make half a$$ comments to her like “You are pretty to be dark” or “You are a pretty black thing!”. Is that suppposed to be a compliment? She would sometimes take out her anger by calling me and my younger sisters “piss colored” *shrug*. To this day, at 36, she is still accousted with the “pretty to be dark” supposed compliments. When we go places they think that we are not even related (same mom and dad) and are so bold as to say we must have atleast one different parent. Being black/dominican we come in different shades. Black people are truly a box of chocolates with different shades and flavors. You would be shocked to know that complexion is an issue within the hispanic/latino community as well.

And I do think post #8 was a catalyst for some negative comments. They were going to come regardless so it was no need to “speak on it”. We should also respect everyone’s opinion so respect the opinion of those who just don’t see what you guys see in Alek Wek.

I just have one thing to say I to everybody that is being ignorant by judging the way she look negatively I think yall need to grow up. It is obvious that she was judge on how beatiful and exotic she look in order to be a model. So apparently the model agency she working for saw other wise. Its hard enough being a women on our own with our one insecurities but then we have to deal with young minded people that like to say stupid shit with out thinking. I hate color struck black people who only find bi-racial or lightskin people attractive… BLACK CAN BE BEAUTIFUL In all shades PERIOD!!! Alek’s skin is clear and healthy and it’s hue is her beauty!!!

I am a South African and too often do I come across African Americans who uphold light complection and long flowing hair as the standard of beauty when it really isn’t. It’s what you’ve been trained, and for many it has worked. But the funny thing is that it’s the white poeople who employed Alek and discovered her exotic beauty.

That is exactly my point Tebs! These agencies would literally kick in a door to have these African models under their management. People just don’t understand the beauty in dark skin tone and different facial features. They don’t understand change! You have to either be white or light skined to be considered a beautiful women or male. And thought I’m light skined myself, I absolutely adore the African couture, and body structures. Ever since I was a little girl I found the African ways to be outstanding and I always wanted to learn more about the different parts of Africa. Alek Wek is gorgeous…I’ve always said she was gorgeous from day one. Her and Grace Jones are the most beautiful women to ever grace the cover of a magazine to me.

Kelly looks very pretty. She is truly stepping up her game.

For all of those who think negatively of Alex Wek…she’s been a SUPERMODEL for years..and guess WHO’S LAUGHING ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK??? Can you say CA-CHING?! The saying is true..one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.’ What you don’t like someone else will…alex is truly evidence of that. Not only is she a supermodel..but she takes care of the people in her native homeland. Something we AMERICANS can take a lesson or two on. Alek is gorgeous. Me being a15 yr. old african american female I really admire her. Alek features are bold and represent her african heritage.kels go head gurl. kels may rock a weave but least she don’t pass it off as her on. And yall have to admit she keeps them on point. My younger sister is also dark-skinned, and when people “compliment” her, they always say stuff like, “wow, you’re dark but you’re real pretty” The shocking thing is, (at least to me), is that ALL the people who make these comments seem to be black.

@ Hershaay. It is a sad reality. Why not give a compliment without having to add the “exception” to it? Why not just say “You are very pretty” without saying “too be dark”?. It is sad that we all can’t agree to disagree on here. I know I personally did not say anything bad about Alek Wek so I am not taking offense to any of the comments made. I did agree her complexion is beautiful, I just don’t see what the 95% of you in here see. I am looking at those pictures of her in a magazines. I’m with what the last poster said. Alek Wek might not be “pretty” to some but it pisses me off when black people talk about somebody else being sooo black. Like, what the fuck? Alek Wek might have dark skin and African features but that is how the majority of black women all over the world look. She isn’t what I would call “pretty” (and I don’t find Beyonce all that beautiful either), but she has something most people don’t. She is REAL, she is in her natural state, and not walking around trying to look like something she will never be. She isn’t throwing her long blonde weave around in Loreal ads like an imitation of Heather Locklear or other California girls, unlike a certain somebody I mentioned whose name starts with B. She isn’t trying to speak like a valley girl or put light foundation on her skin or wear colored contacts or be completely fake like so many people. She is real and that is what makes her attractive. It isn’t so much about skin color, in my humble opinion. I simply wish that people could be more open to more diverse types of looks. We’re all entitled to opinions but some people make this woman sound like a freak/monster/weirdo because she has dark skin and very little hair. If you don’t find her attractive, that is OK but you don’t have to make hurtful comments. I’m sure the people saying this stuff probably have plenty of folks in their families who look a little bit like Alek and maybe even darker.

Whoever said that many black people have issues with color is on the money. I happen to be mixed, I have been beaten up and spit on because I’m fair-skinned, and I want nothing to do with anyone who looks down on others because of petty stuff like skin color. I cannot control the fact that my mother is a white woman and I have dealt with hostility all my life from other black people because of how I look. No one should say to a darker-skinned individual: “You’re pretty to be dark”. That is not a compliment, it is an insult disguised as a compliment. That’s like saying to a woman who is slightly overweight: “You’re pretty but you’d be prettier if you were skinny”.

i never knew how beautiful she was (Alek), i am dark skinned myself. not like the dark skinned the a lot of light skinned ppo coin brown skinned ones, but dark. anyways i always had a problem wit my complexion and sometimes still do. i never thought being as dark as i am was ever pretty. nobody ever wanted to claim their true color. i say this to say, a lot of ppo often resorted into bleaching their skin to escape the color the god saw them best as. nobody wanted to feature a drk skinned person of woman of that matter on television. and when they did they always associated her character with being from africa. as an adolescent i never associated those two words in a positive way realizing that blk is truly beautiful and we all hail from that beautiful place. its so great to see alek doing her thing, over the years i have come to realize that blk is beautiful, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. i am now 20, soon to be 21 and think believe that i am beautiful for one of the first times in my life.
