All that said, my favorite two parts was when the contest winner spoke telling everyone to find Jesus and when Kirk Franklin said he wanted to thank Jesus by not only what he said, but how he lived. That put things in perspective for me because Kirk is finally growing up spiritually. His Christian journey has been inspiring to me because I though he had lost his mind when he had the strippers in his video once. Now, he reveals that he did have a problem with porn and is recovering and back doing great things for the Lord.

Great night, fun night, so many positive Black people doing big things. Life is great for the moment!

It was CIL part 2. I loved the band. Her abs were sick.

I had to DVR the entire show because I worked till damn near midnight but I just watched it and I agree with most of the board:

- Damon Wayans could’ve mad this a forgettable show if the performances weren’t so hot.

- I must comment that I’m HAPPY that everyone showed up this year. I was a little scared when Missy didn’t go on stage to get her award, but she showed up during the Busta performance so that was cool. I can’t lie, I was really upset that most of the entertainers skipped a GREAT show last year, but they put their all into the MTV Awards. So to see that everyone who received an award did show up was GREAT because it’d be a shame to demonstrate we can’t even support our own awards show hosted by our own network.

- I don’t know if it was just my TV, but did anyone else notice that it seemed like the camera they were using made it seem like you weren’t watching a live broadcast? It seemed like it was taped a year ago and replayed now. I don’t mean to be picky, but one of my gripes about BET award shows is that they will have the stupid technical difficulties like cutting back from commercial before they cue the host (it happened only once tonight) or the horrible audio during T.I. performance (which would’ve been second to Busta’s in my opinion) and Puffy’s mic. They have better quality footage in pornos! I think the BET Awards is VERY close to surpassing the MTV and Grammy’s as the most anticipated awards show within the Black music community, but if the world is going to turn to this show as it’s fix for recognizing Black music, then the silly technical errors and glitches have to be resolved. I don’t care about people ad-libbing or even promoting their CDs because that is how we do things, but the technical aspects of presenting the show have to be fixed. Even though it’s a black show it don’t mean you can’t hire a all-white/mexican stage crew (I’m just joking….sorta;-)

- I was happy that everyone left their entourage either at home or in the crowd. I think a three person maximum is great unless you have like 7 performers on one song (Busta).

- Busta killed it hands down. I give it a 9.5 and the only reason I don’t give it a 10 is because DMX didn’t show up and Will.I.Am didn’t follow Kelis off the stage after his song was finished.

- Maybe the expectations are too high now, and I know this is a Beyonce-lover site, but I was very underwhelmed by Beyonce’s performance even though Jay-Z slappin it was a mild highlight. That would’ve been a great mid-show performance, but after having the Fugees last year and Monique dancing the year before, they could’ve went with a better opening act to set the night off on the right foot. Kanye and Jamie performing Gold Digger would’ve been nice.

- Seeing Janet Jackson come out with her Goodtimes cast was a treat! I don’t know about yal, but I was cracking up when I saw J.J. because I kept thinking about the Camron video and I was praying to see him and Jay-Z in split screen because they do loook alike. Or at least show us Jay-Z’s reaction.

- I thought Prince could’ve closed the show better. Since he won a award and set it off during the Chaka performance, the interest factor just wore off but I understand they probably had to guarantee him a highlight performance for him to agree to participate as much as he did.

- Two words: Whitney Houston. She should’ve sung “I’m every woman!” with Chaka just to demonstrate that no matter what happens to her, she’ll never lose her voice. That would’ve made this the best BET awards show hands down for me.

- I hope they don’t recycle Stevie anymore. Let him take the next five shows off so we can be reminded that it’s a treat to still see him perform.

- The only people who should be allowed to host the BET awards are: Monique, Steve Harvey, Chris Rock or Ralphie May. Yeah, I said it, Ralphie May. If anyone saw him host the Big Black Comedy Show on Showtime then you know that fat white boy is FUNNY. To be a great host, you have to be a great stand up comedian because you will have to ad lib on the fly and catch the crowd off guard. Damon can’t flow like that and it was obvious because he’s a sketch comedian. I’d even like to see Jamie Foxx if he ever decides to take a break from singing to do stand-up again.

- BET needs to clean house with their current hosts. I know most of yal on this site hate him but I actually like Big Tigga. Julissa grew on me but I wouldn’t miss her if she was gone. These new hosts, Terrence and that other girl just don’t click with me. Terrence tries to hard to be a cross between A.J. and Tigga. I was actually feelin that one dude from B2K when he was hosting 106 for like a week. Either bring back Free and A.J. or continue your search because trying to slowly feed us Terrence and that other girl hoping they’ll carve a niche for themselves is not going to work.

- Last but not last, the person I would like to see make a surprise guest appearance sooner than later is: Donnie Simpson. He was the only black brother holding it down (even though he cheated with his eyes) during the era of the light-skinned brothers who dominated everything (late 80s, early 90s).

Otherwise, I think BET took another step forward tonight and I look forward to all of the upcoming reality series and whatnot. I just wish BET would have a show like Run’s House because I think their major flaw is that highlight the current generation too much and only pay respect to the past once a year during award shows. They need some more documentaries or shows discussing the personal and professional lives of past Black entertainers. I still can’t believe that VH1 beat BET to that concept because for all of BET’s strides, I can honestly say VH1 has quality Black entertainment programming even in terms discussion of Hip Hop. BET is still focused on displaying the lifestyle of Hip Hop and Black Entertainment versus telling the stories at the root and discussing the larger picture.

A good host for the BET awards is Steve Harvey. Never have any complaints about him doing any award shows, its always funny, and he DEFINATELY woulda talked about how cheap all the MIC problems were.

Once again on Damon. They shoulda saved his promo videos for the awards, to be shown on the awards.

Because that was funnier than anything he said at the show.

Prince…. maybe i didn’t hear it right, but whats up with how prince was backing up the singers during the Chaka tribute.

I must say, that dude is cool though, and for him to be 48 and looking younger than pretty much anyone at the awards except Chris Brown, thats scary.

Mary J B need to stick to “Brook Lyn” or whatever it is, cause in my opinion, she never could sing, she never will be able to sing.

Your coverage on last night’s Bet Awards was great. I would have given it an A++ if I had seen something written about Prince by Angel and Brian in the course of their show commentaries. After all he is one of the greatest, if not the greatest musician in the world. That said, your efforts were very entertaining. never saw the usher and alicia keys performance, so I can’t comment on it. I never said it was cute. same goes for the infamous lap dance given by destiny’s child for “cater 2 u.” I was out of town during the time of the BET awards last year, so I didn’t even get to see it. so again, I can’t really speak on that.

the reason why I said that the kiss between fantasia and jamie was disgusting was because when they disconnected, you could see spit coming from in between their mouths, which just made it completely disgusting. if you look at that picture, jamie is BITING fantasia’s lower lip. it just looked gross to me, and EVERYONE I watched it with (I attended a watching party, hehe) agreed with me.

again, like I said, I liked jamie by himself. I didn’t feel as though fantasia added anything to the performance. that was just my opinion, I wasn’t asking you or telling you to agree with me.

VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH BEYONCE’S performance. Usually Jay is just filler in her performances but he was actually the highlight of her set and probably saved her from some very bad reviews. Other than Jayonce finally showing some chemistry and rarely seen affection, the set was poorly coreographed and she banked too much on the fact that she is attractive and everyone will accept just watching her run around stage and shake a little. BY the way, How all them 3LW posters feel about B’s convulsions on the floor?

Okay what was up with ya’ll’s princess B , I say ya’ll cause I don’t really care for her, and usually I like to see the occasional diva crash and burn ( like Tonight) but even I was like she can do better than that!!!. Her hair was fried died and electrified , and what was her ass doing having a seizure? I know she got some rhythm , I guess she lent it to India Arie cause she was dancing her butt off with her cut and swirl but that’s another time and place. Back to Hot mess almighty , did she even listen to her song , guess she should checked on that one a little bit more before she came out like that!

After that preformance if you can call it that , everyone else seemed to go all wrong , why was Damon acting like he was scared to tell a damn joke , and why was everybody preforming , theyw as doing it back to back at one point and time. I think I really enjoyed Chaka Kahn and that was about it.

I have to say it. I expected more from Beyonce. The dancing and band were off the hook, (give it up for the band) but I wanted more from her vocally. She was dancing to much to sing. That shit was prerecorded and you could tell. She did the same thing when she sang at the opening of that football game. She looked amazing, (glad she changed up the hair).

That was the worse show, The host was corny, the presenters was f..king up something horrible. Beyonce’s look & performance were flawless! Deja Vu is gonna have to grow on me, she was yelling too much. All the other performances were good. Chris Brown and Keyshia both ran out of breath about 1 minute into their set.

Young Joc & Diddy should have been left out of the lineup. Joc spent more time doing that fucking “motorcycle” than he did spitting. Chaka’s tribute was fire, there was too much heat on that stage, even Stevie jumped up with that harmonica! Fantasia was unnecessary, she can sing, but all she did was yell, Jamie just wanted to recreate what he did at the pre-Grammy party……whatever.

Beyonce’s performance was good. It was the least boring of all the female performers. Someone made a comparison to the fact that Keyshia and Mary sang all the way live but their performances consisted of standing in one spot and giving us a performance we could have gotten anywhere. Overall I was disappointed with the show, Damon Wayans was not funny and half the time sounded high. I would rather see Steve Harvey or Monique do the hosting duties…The performances were HOT, Busta & Crew tore it up.

I don’t know what some of ya’ll are talking about, but I think Beyonce is great. Lip syncing or not, she KILLED it. I was a little shocked by all the movement and humping on the stage, but the girl does her own thing. She has a lot of energy and she always puts on a good performance. She doesn’t do the same thing that everyone else is doing and doesn’t care about being prissy and cute like say Mariah Carey (I love her though) on stage.

Mary J. Blige’s vocals sounded better than usual. I didn’t hear all the usual screaming. I actually liked the outfit except for the drooping crotch area.

I LOVED Chris Brown’s performance. I think that was actually my favorite or one of my favorites. The boy can dance and sing. The performance was overall great. I loved when we got inside that thing and it moved him over the crowd.

Busta Rhymes’KILLED it. I loved the energy on stage. I was happy to see Eminem on stage too.

I felt bad for T.I. I was a bit confused but I love him anyway.

Overall I think this was one of the best BET awards so far. Save the corny jokes of Damon Wayans, but he didn’t bother me too much.

I know this aint about Alicia Keys but in reference to what someone stated above, I believe she and her music are very boring, and her voice is sub par.

Bey and Jay was just as someone posted earlier a remake of CIL from the song lyrics to the dance performance. I think that when she performed CIL that show was so HOT that we all expected to see her top that and she didnt. I am not her biggest fan nor do I hate her so I will just call it like I see it. The whole bootie shakin thing is so 3 yrs ago-lets try something else, that was cute when you were barely legal but now you a grown ass women lets step the game up a little.

Jamie’s performance was ok, I think he can really sing but Fantasia really didnt serve a purpose in that set and I like Tasia.

Keyshia is my girl and glad to see that she soften her look a bit. Wanted her to really tear the house down cause that girl got some pipes-RAW talent, no vocal coaches and all that just pure God given talent. She didnt give me what I wanted but I think she was still good.

MJB is the Queen of Hip Hop Soul for a reason-shall I say more, but I agree she could have changed the outfit, wasnt feeling the catsuit but the boots were hot and I mean it in a good and bad way cause this is June.

In last nights performance when Bey snapped her neck back but was still singing, thats totally impossible to not hear her voice jump a little in the mic. Let me put you on….what vocalists do when they know they are going to be dancing alot, they record the track over days before and switch up the vocals a little to give people the illusion of “shes not singing it the exact way the record goes so she must be singing live” Janet has done this for YEARS! To further add to the illusion of live singing they turn the mic on certain times so that she can acually hit a note or 2 to make it seem like she has been singing the whole time. Hence… the above you tude video… when she was jumping with the band and the song was about to end, her last “deja vu” the mic was turned back on. I am sure it was turned on other times but that was the one that stood out to me. OFCOURSE Bey does not have to lip sing, we all know that, Bey is no joke with the vocals but that doesnt mean that she doesnt do it. When you want to give a good PHYSICAL performance thats what you do. Everybody does it especially those that dance alot. Its okay (relax & breathe ya’ll stans) Bey is still great at her craft sometimes you need a little help so that you can get your dance on and not sound toally out of breathe….jeesh

As far as performances…I wish Janet was able to do her new song. That would’ve been a really nice act. I guess I expected a little more from Beyonce and was disappointed. Hoewver!, she did lip sync though but that’s okay…who really cares. And I think it’s just the single that people aren’t feeling.

The way the went back & forth together was really cute. I know a lot of you are saying this could’ve been left out, but I don’t think it was meant to be a “major” performance. Come on now, Yung Joc’s single has been number 1 for some time. I think his shine was well deserved. He had fun! :0)

Chaka Khan Tribute: One of my favorites, I watched it back (via DVR) this morning. I loved seeing Prince move. Yolanda has some pipes man, but I wish Mary J. had done Sweet Thing. India Arie, she is hot. Beautiful voice and hot body. Chaka is just beautiful, I loved seeing her back in the day shots.

Not to be here all day but I noticed someone mentioned the Mo’Nique and Rihanna thing. Yeah I think Mo’Nique did cut her off purposely. I think it’s time she get over the “skinny vs fat” thing she got going on. No one’s stopping her from losing weight (if that’s really what she’d like to obtain).

Sorry guys, but Beyonce was lip syncing to a live performance track. Janet, Britney, and most performers do it that to focus on their dance during the show. There would be no way for her to be that physical and never have to take a breath! Listen to the differences in her voice at the Jay Z concert sunday and the awards. You can clearly tell that when she sings live she puts her body into it. There were none of her trademark adlibs during this performance. It’s not a bad thing, she just did it to make her show better. Hell, Chris Brown should take notes!

I was expecting much more! I’m a pro at telling if soomeone is lip-synching, singing with the track, or singing live. Honestly, I felt she was lip-synching… then I was like it can’t be this is B!, then when she got on the floor acting all crazy like, then I was totally convinced that she was lip-syching. That doesn’t take away from her talent. She is still unprecedented!

Jamie and Fantasia- I loooove Jamie Fox, but after seeing their ” Clive Davis grammy party” performance I was abdolutely disappointed. I was waiting to hear Fantasia do her thang, I love to hear her go crazy… but she didn’t. The kiss was pointless after that.

Mary Mary- What can I say but CHUUUCH!!!

T.I.- I’m not a fan so I won’t comment.

Keysha Cole- I stay rooting for that girl! Her dress was soooooo horrible. It made her look old. Her voice sounded like the record. Her voice gave out towrd the end but hey.. noones perfect. That’s what you call raw talent.

Mary- I love, love, love me some Mary, but that lady stay walking and dancing like a dude. She has zero grace( and she doesn’t seem to care). I liked her better during her second performance( with Bus).

I appreciate Yolanda, but she doesn’t have the same affect singing secular as she does singing gospel, her performance didn’t move me. I love India, but she didn’t do it for me either. Miss Chaka did her thang! Her voice sounded wonderful. stevie was great as usual. Prince was awesome on his guitar!! I just wish I was in charge of the talent. I would’ve gotten Mary for sweet thing, Whitney for I’m every woman, Beyonce for tell me sumthin good. Pattie Labelle for through the fire, and Chaka for my funny valentine.

Bey is so overrated. Just like other people commented she has been doing the same thing for the past 3 years. Her dad must have paid BET to let her open up the show b/c that song is wack. Janet and Nelly new song is so much better, they would have been better letting them sing.

A lot of people are kind of disappointed with B’s performance, but most must realize that she’s a singer and not a dancer, as folks like Janet and a few others are dancers and not singers. B’s performance reminded a lot of Tina’s performances. There are not a lot of people who can actually sing and dance at the same time. The exceptions? TLC, who practiced that way because they thought you were supposed to perform like that and Usher. I’m sure there are lot of them that do, but not many.

Ok, overall I thought the BET Awards was alright. It got really boring towards the end, though.

Performance…

Beyonce and Jay-Z: I’m not a fan of the song, and even after that performance I’m still not a fan. Those dance moves she was using were wack, recycled from Crazy in Love, or just plain stolen from other artists. Someone said it earlier, but I Bet Shakira got a good laugh looking at Beyonce trying (and failing) to out-latina her. And I bet Keily from 3LW is PISSED that B straight ripped off her spasms-on-the-floor routine and got PRAISED for it. As for the singing…I’ll admit that Beyonce has good vocals—she does– but I have to cosign with that earlier poster who said that there’s NO WAY Beyonce could have done all the moving and shaking and throwing herself on the floor and not miss a single beat. The best vocalist in the world couldn’t do that—it throws your air-pipe out of alignment. Sure, you could still sing, but there’d be little skips from all that movement. One thing you can’t hate on, though, is the energy B brings to her performances. She just doesn’t stop moving.

Christina’s performance of Ain’t No Other Man was much hotter, though.

Chris Brown: I’m not a fan of his voice when he’s in the studio, so you KNOW all that dancing he was doing had him sounding like a frog…which he did. That boy sure can dance, though. And he’s a little cutie. I’m just going to need all these GROWN ASS WOMEN to get off of his seventeen-going-to-the-junior-prom jock.

Jamie Foxx and Fantasia: Vocally, it was good. I think Jamie’s a good (if hugely overrated) singer, and he knows how to work a crowd. Fantasia, on the other hand, needs to calm herself. Don’t get me wrong, I love ‘Tasia—she got my votes every week on American Idol—but she’s going a little overboard with the soul-growl thing she does when she’s singing. She needs to calm that down a little and let her real vocals shine through.

I’m watching the Red Carpet show again - and why are they showing videos from the past and adding all this extra “106 & Park” talk between interviews. It was two hours too long and unnecessary commentary. It needs to be one hour long and strictly professional interviews with the stars. Next year eliminate the constant star plugging - it takes away from your status by plugging (Master P, Avante…)- you’ve already made it people that’s why you are there. Tigga and Julissa’s “yo-yo-yos…and constant yeeaHHs” should be left for 106 & Park.

i guess people either loved or hated the Beyonce performance. i am one of those that hated it.

I didn’t understand why she was shaking so wildly. The dance moves didn’t seem to be choreographed AT ALL, and she wasn’t singing live. Draging yourself across the floor don’t equal a good performance. Next time she should tell Shasha to stay at home. Also..the band wasn’t playing I kept looking at the girls on the keyboards and their hands barely moved. They were just there as props & they coudln’t even get the dances straight.

Best Performances were Busta & Chris Brown. I give HIM (Chris) props for dancing his ass off AND singing live. Bey needs to go back to that (ala her performance last year).

I thought Janet Jackson showed a lot of love to the guy that played Michael, but she could have cared less about Bernadette and Jimmy Walker. Janet is looking so good.

Everytime I see that Crazy in Love video and see how she hits the ground, my ACL starts to ache. I did see her in an interview and I can kind of see why some you guys dog her out, but proper speaking is not a sign of intelligence. I have seen articulate folks do some of the dumbest things and folks who can not ennunicate well outperform their peers. Unfortunately, people look at style instead of substance. I feel sorry for younger people who have no idea what a real performance is. This year’s show as mediocre at best. So many people complained about Beyonce’s gyrations…but it is hardly an insult to be compared to Tina Turner or anyone from that era. That’s when folks knew how to sing and dance and tear up a stage. When you see untrained folks like Keyshia Cole wheezing through a performance because she doesn’t have breath control, you understand the difference between someone trained (B) and someone not (just about everyone else.
I give props to Prince, Chaka and Stevie for holding down the living legends but I was waiting for Prince to break out a classic so the end was a letdown.
Busta has always been one of the best performers in hip-hop. T.I. was not just done wrong by the soundman, he was done wrong by duplicating last year’s performance with a live band minus Sheila E.
I’ve never seen any host of any awards show in history get as bad reviews as Damon Wayans but he deserved them. The fact that he made ghetto ass Mo’Nique seem good by comparison tells you something.
I love seeing successful black folks get together but this year lacked energy and true star power. P. Diddy really looked out of place on stage and Young Joc had no stage presence whatsoever. Mary’s performance was one of her worst this year and I’ve seen most of them thanks to Tivo. I just think that’s a great radio song, but not a great live performance one for her.
I hope BET can step it up next year, this was CEO Debra Lee’s first awards show but they need to institute some quality control for next year.

So first of all im like ignorantly late, but I still have to add my two cents.

Beyonce- Im a fan, so I liked it.

Damon Wayans- WACK BEYOND MEASURE. I was literally embarrased for him, it was awaful. “Hated It.”

T.I.- The fact that they fucked up my baby’s audio is unforgivable, but he won in his category so he was redeemed.

Jamie and Fantasia- I mean WHY? She was an irrelevant addition to the performance, and she was not singing.

Janet Jackson- Her head was a fool but she was killin that dress, I was like get it Penny.

Chris Brown- Reminiscent of a B2K performance, but I like him so I could appreciate the performance.

ok, i re- watched the BET awards on my tivo and Bee was ABSOLUTELY lip-synching (or at least semi- singing with a backing track) over a newly- recorded DAT of the song. grant it, she has the sense NOT to come out and lip-synch over the studio version… but she CLEARLY was lip-synching. Maybe there was somehting “off” about her voice and that prompted the decision, because we know the girl can sang! Great performance though.

That skirt made Beyonce’s butt disappear; the outfit was wack. Sorry, but I LOVE the song. I don’t care that she is yellin her ass off, I still love the song.

My 2 cents, Beyonce… anyone who says that there wasn’t a backtrack involved is not in the business. No adlib, indentical/exact to radio version= lip sync. I was a skeptic until I seen her hit the floor. There is no way you can coordinate a prefect note, you would have to have a rest, unless she is this God amongst mortals half the people think. A legend? Have to disagree. The only legend on that show was khan and Harry. to be a legend you have to do something extraordinary. Her voice is good, but not out of this world. It has not contribute to the growth of mankind or our race, been done. Whitney broke the field she is in and Bey has yet to live. She’s only 25 so we don’t know what the future holds for beloved.

Beyonce’s performance was bush league. Keisha Cole should have gotten Sandman Simms from the Apollo to dance her ass off stage - the worst singing of the night. Foxx and that hoochie Fantasia stank up the stage with that old negro “I want to fuck you tonight, baby” music that plagues what passes for R&B these days - Miami Vice better be good. And Damon Wayans seemed like he was drunk - and without one good joke.
