HEADS ROLLIN’ @ VIBE MAGAZINE?

Friday, June 30, 2006

vibeshakeup.jpgWord is that Vibe Magazine recently had a staff shakeup, and Editor in Chief, Mimi Valdes tops the list. The Bitter Vibes blog, broke this exclusive news yesterday.

Bitter Vibes is an anonymous blog, fronted by one of Vibe’s ‘bitter’ staff members; the disgruntled employee calls out the backstabbers & fake bitches from behind the scenes. It’s a pretty good blog; you need to check it out.

Anyway, I read some of the comments on the blog and they said Mimi Valdes was crying her eyes out, and she has until next week Wednesday to clean out her desk. They also posted the list of the ‘alleged’ staff members that got the boot. The list is as follows: Mimi Valdes, Shani Saxon, Eric Parker, Jamie Katz, and Lakeba Hollar..

Here is the actual post BV put up:
Thursday, June 29, 2006: 2:43 PM THIS JUST IN!!!! BUH-BYE MIMI AND FRIENDS!!!!!!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! GOOD RIDDANCE BITCHES AND HEFFAS!!!!!!!!

This is poetic justice in the highest order! Maybe someone from the blog will volunteer to help ya pack. Be gone by Wednesday heffas! LMAO

Who has a link to Justin Timberlake’s Cry Me a River? I guess those tears didn’t stop any of ya’ll bitches and punks from back stabbing and doing sneaky underhanded shit. Isn’t it funny how no one cries while they’re stabbing someone in the back but when they get stabbed in the back the pain is fucking excruciating.

Hmmm…Remember when pancake ass made references to bittervibes being homeless? I just have one thing to say…WHO’S HOMELESS NOW??????????????????????????????????? (SOURCE)

Well if this is true, I’m not surprised. Word is Vibe’s sales have been low as hell since Mimi jumped on board, plus them fools can’t spell check for shit. I know yall remember that Lil Wayne cover. Not to mention, half of their cover pictures were straight garbage (ie. Mary J. Blige’s forehead).

Here is what BV wrote today:

Friday, June 30, 2006: 12:09 AM There’s something hilarious about someone who’s positioned themselves as larger than life being kicked off of the pedestal they’ve built for themselves. There’s also something insanely refreshing about a bunch of interlopers, flunkies and ass kissers sitting around instant messaging their friends as they contemplate their fate in the workplace. I’m talking about folks who have made a habit of being fake, unkind and yes even sinister. I’m talking about folks who wouldn’t know an original thought if it bit them on the clit or dick or if they stole it from an unsuspecting intern or other worker. It’s funny when folks spend time out of their day trying to stab people in the back without realizing they’ve positioned themselves to have the knife firmly planted in their back(s). (SOURCE)

Wasn’t it that Lil’ Wayne was wearing a belt that said “Bape” and some dumbasses actually belived it said “Rape” so they got all offended? I know that has nothing to do with the cover words but I know that happened with that cover. Other than that I thought it was a good picture. Mary’s well, we all know that wasn’t working.

But I will continue to read VIBE. I never buy the magazine when I can read it at my beauty shop (lol) but I haven’t noticed a difference in it.

GOOD LAWD THATS ALOTTA DRAMA!!!

I didn’t know it was like that at Vibe! Vibe was the shyt around the Biggie/Tupac era! They had major exclusives…now Vibe is more like some shyt right now…you can tell that alot of “hipsters” work at Vibe, you know the crowd that thinks they are too cool and love Black Eyed Peas (examples: DJ AM, Nicole Richie, Lindsay Lohan…basically mofos that think they are cool but are actually quite lame!)…

I will be checking out this blog…thanks ANGEL.LA!

Also what did happen with Lil Wayne’s cover…besides the fact Lil Wayne’s ugg mug was on it!

This ‘Vibe’ Too Vibealacious For Ya, Babe…

While Vibe puts on a public face that no, editor-in-chief Mimi Valdes (who’s history with the mag began in ‘93) and her staff are not on the way out, gossip insist otherwise. The source for the masthead shake up rumors……

31.

no, thank you

Friday, June 30, 2006 /

@#20 & 24–it wasn’t that dumb–the way it was photographed it really looked like the word “rape,” and if you’d never heard of BAPE, you wouldn’t assume anyone would be wearing a belt buckle with a non-word.

Apparently, Vibe was sold thus the rumors floating around….

Stephanie D. Smith

JUNE 30, 2006 -

After more than a year on the block, urban music and fashion monthly Vibe is said to have found a buyer.

Sources familiar with the deal say Keith Glen Media, the parent company of progressive fashion and culture monthly BlackBook, is expected to take over Vibe magazine, women’s quarterly Vibe Vixen and Vibe’s Internet, television and mobile offerings. Keith Glen Media is led by CEO Eric Gertler and president Ari Horowitz.

The deal is expected to close today.

A spokesperson for BlackBook Media had no comment, but official announcement is expected to be made Wednesday. A spokesperson for Vibe was not familiar with the deal.

According to sources, Vibe President Kenard Gibbs and editor in chief Mimi Valdez will likely leave the company. Additionally, layoffs, primarily on the editorial side, are also expected.

The strategy behind the acquisition is to “step up” the Vibe brand, according to a source familiar with the deal. The deal would marry Black Book’s fashion forward approach with Vibe’s urban music and culture content and provide significant investment to grow Vibe’s global and online properties.

While Vibe has successfully grown its brand across multiple media platforms, paid circulation fell 2.8 percent to 836,611 through the second half of 2005, missing its 850,000 rate base, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

Newsstand sales grew 8.1 percent. Ad pages through July, pages fell 8.2 percent to 624, reports the Mediaweek Monitor.

I KNOW “MARY J BLIGE” IS SOMEWHERE “CRACKING UP” over this shit.

This is some FOUL stuff…SHADY as hell…going on down @ VIBE.

But I still think that MARY knew she had a BIG FOREHEAD & should have done that PHOTO SHOOT wearing her hair in her face rather than carrying it back…then maybe the MAJORITY of her PHOTOS would have been SATISFACTORY instead of a select FEW. She had no one to blame but herself for that one.

LOL.

If she started w/Vibe in ‘93, that explains a lot. Has she been editor that long as well? I stopped reading VIBE after ‘97. Once Pac died it was over - not that one occurrence effected the other - but I began to notice that articles supposedly targeted towards “Us” -black people- sounded very non-black- if that’s possible. They just didn’t seem to fit into the culture they professed to represent, and the tone and opinion of the articles didn’t relate to me. Every once in a while, I’d be so put off by an article, I’d actually look to see who wrote it - and the name would be some Asian oriented name.

I’m not saying you have to be Black to write to Black people about Black culture and music - but as a write, you definately have a RESPONSIBILITY to have a clear understanding of your audience’s culture, people and where they stand on their music. Not flouting your own half-socialized opinions of something you just got introduced to in high school and have now decided you are the authority on.

I stopped reasding VIBE at that point, I guess I missed the hey-day of 2000 2001 you all are speaking of, but if you look back ‘98 is definately where it began it’s demise. That was the beginning of the signs of the times for me - The prostitution of our culture and what eventually happened to hip-hop was loud and clear in VIBE early on.

@ #21 - Such Magnificence - you definately said it best

YAY! I’m really glad they are planning to get rid of Mimi Valdez because no matter how bad the music is in Hip-Hop/ R&B right now, she took a great urban magazine and turned it into a boring & commercial waste of $4. She’ll put anyone on the cover, whether they deserve one or not and these covers have been wack for years. She couldn’t do anything different than giving everybody a promo picture for the cover of the magazine? What happened to the art of the front covers? If you ask me, the worst ever Vibe Cover belongs to Ciara and Bow Wow, not Mary. I remember seeing that and began thinking to myself that she has officially lost her mind.

Hip-Hop culture certainly isn’t at it’s smartest or strongest points right now, but, that doesn’t mean that this magazine had to be so unappealing and generic. I see teenagers reading Vibe now because all these artists who were once only reading Right on! and Word Up can now get Vibe to see their favorite weak artists.
This can only be a change for the better!

Yeah some of the main articles are kind of weak and a bit predictable but it still showcases black entertainment and gives entertainers an oppurtunity to have thier voce heard and is a good way of keeping tabs on the pulse of black entertainment. There are some flaws but nothing that a talented editor with some vision can’t fix.
