STAR JONES DEFENDS MARIAH’S BLACKNESS ON ‘THE VIEW’

Monday, June 19, 2006

star_sandrview.JPGComic Sandra Bernhard ran into brick wall trying to rehash her old ‘Mimi’ joke.

Star Jones Reynolds had to bite her tongue to keep from cursing out comedian Sandra Bernhard on “The View” Friday morning.

Bernhard has made jokes in the past about biracial singer Mariah Carey appearing to cash in on her blackness only when her more mainstream pop material became passé. Star, reading from the pre-interview notes on her blue cards, asked Bernhard to explain why she is now claiming responsibility for the success of Carey’s album, “The Emancipation of Mimi.”

Bernhard said it was her jokes eight years ago about Carey “being black only when it’s convenient” that led to the singer’s nervous breakdown, which eventually resulted in this current emancipation. (read more)

I CAN’T STAND STAR!! EVER SINCE HER FAT ASS GOT A MAD SHE HAS BECOME FAKE!!! MARIAH HAS NOT ALWAYS ACTED BLACK. ONLY WHEN SHE NEEDED A REMIX! OLD STAR WOULD HAVE SPOKEN THE TRUTH. AND SOMEBODY NEEDS TO LET HER KNOW THAT SOME PEOPLE SHOULDN’T LOSE TO MUCH WEIGHT CAUSE THEN YOU START LOOKING UGLY LIKE HER. STAR ALSO STARTED THE “VIEW” SAYING THAT SHE DOESN’T NEED A MAN NOW ALL SHE TALKS ABOUT IS HER GAY ASS MAN!!

I have to admit, I always liked some of Mariah Carey’s music, but since I’m not a big pop fan, I became a real fan of Mariah after her Fantasy album, when she began singing more R&B rather than pop. Some people say that Mariah wanted to sing R&B all along but her husband/manager wanted her to have a certain image. Not sure if all that’s true but it’s something to think about. And you can’t totally accuse her of dying her hair blond to look white, you can, but she’s certainly not the only one. I could accuse a lot of other ethnic singers and actresses of the same thing (for example, J-Lo and Beyonce (that’s my girl and all but I’m keeping it real), and their are plenty of others. Personally if I was light as Mariah, Beyonce or J-Lo I would purposely not color my hair blonde because I’m not trying to be mistaken for a White person, but that’s me. White people are cool, but I’m a proud Black woman.

Sandra Bernhard was only joking about Mariah, but my real problem is with that shrew Elizabeth Hasselback. There was no need for her to get all psycho just because the guest was talking about Laura Bush. I mean dayumn — is she on the Bush payroll? Anyone can see that Laura Bush looks like she is on valium.

I think Mariah chose her white side and used the black side to get some soul music. She acts like the old white lady from Green Acres, (Zsa or Eva Gabor) calling people darling. She is the female version of Tiger Woods to me. She NEVER SAID she was a black woman. She says she is biracial. She does not date black men AT ALL,that being said. No black woman (Star) is going to sit next to a white chick and say people use blackness for convenience. Let’s be real Sandra is fond of the N-word.

mariah is black, if you take in to consideration the one drop rule. mariah is alright with me she can sing, and has always delivered beautiful songs from the jump. Mariah struggles enough with her own identity, it’s so apparent that she has issues. I am so glad that she got herself together enough to deliver another hot album just for all you haters who are obviously hoping for her demise.

She has absolutely nothing to gain by saying her father is black and he wasn’t apart of her life. Many white artists collaborate with black producers etc. and make hit songs, they have been doing this forever, so she doesn’t need to create a story about her nationality to jump on the ole bandwagon.

That white/black (whatever) bit** is bad, you can’t even hate on her. Her skills are unquestionable. When you are that good, color doesn’t matter-she obviously appeals to the masses-check those record sales!!!!!!

What’s wrong wit dating brothers? Just because Mariah Carey is an R&B singer doesn’t mean she’s trying to be more black. And she didn’t cause nobody to have a break down because during the time of Mariah breakdown nobody even knew or cared who she was. She says all this crap about “All of us are related in some way.” and then she says racial slurs on National Television. Give me a break Sandra Bernhard!

ok want to impart some things.. first off Mariah had no control over her career in the beginning it was all Tommy Motolla, I think he was the mastermind of the “guess my race game”. He pulled the same technique with Paula Abdul, she was also signed with Sony music. And when she came out no one knew what her ethnic orgin was either, and they (record company), played that for as long as they could. Once Mariah left Tommy everything changed she gained weight, changed her hair, and the kind of songs she sang.

36.

damshespretty

I have always liked Mariah. When you are mixed you mostly relate to the person who raised you, which was her mother. That’s why she might have related more to white people. When she became of age she decided to learn more about herself, and I respect that.

Her father is half spanish and when she reconected with him, she started claiming spanish people to. Shes just all mixed up. LOL

I’m gonna have to agree with #29 (bailey) Mariah’s skills speak way louder than Sandra Bernhard (complete nobody) OR star jones. I’m not the hugest Mariah fan, but I am just curious…what is “acting black?” Let’s not put our own selves in a box like that ok? As far as claiming blackness i have always known her as black and her recent collabos with hip hop artists is just a change with the times. many people black, white and whatever are doing the same thing (Anybody know that song Promiscuous Girl? Nelly Furtado? Ok, what are some of her other hits? You may know them, but I sure don’t because giving songs a hip-hop edge in today’s world makes a big difference and makes good business sense).

There was an interesting article in a recent publication about a biracial family: black mother, white father, and three children. The parents are raising the children to identify with both races and the children are secure in their racial identity. So secure, in fact, that they each answer differently when filling out questionaires that require them to identify with a particular race. One girl checks both African-American and Caucasian. The son checks Other. The third child just says Bi-Racial.

In this day and age, there are more and more biracial children and requiring them to choose one over the other is not fair. If they are raised properly by both parents then being biracial is not ever going to be a problem for them. It will only be a problem for those who want them to choose. It hasn’t been for me.

Mariah was raised by her white mother. However, as she got older and learned more about her father’s heritage then she began to identify with that side. She may have chosen to call herself one or the other based on the music hotness of the day. As a biracial woman she can identify with both and if that works for her then how can you hate on her? She doesn’t have to claim one race.

I agree with #30 I think people on here are using this problem to add to the fact that they just don’t like Mariah. Because you can’t be serious about Mariah not being black. It’s a fact. Even if Mariah said I’m not black it’s a fact, she can’t change it and neither can the hata’s. Like I said if Halle, Alicia Keys, Vanessa Willaims,Sade, and Chilli from TLC are black then so is Mariah. Why not? Cause we want to hate? Grow up.

MiMi is living in the skin she’s in. She didn’t chose it, but she’s dealing with it.

I’m biracial and kids are cruel as hell growing up! She’s learned to love herself,so she dyed her hair, why doea it have to be to look white, maybe it just enhances her beauty. I have green eyes and auburn hair by birth I didn’t finally try it(dye my hair) til I was 30 and it was the best move I could make. Not to look white but because it truly enchanced my features. Kinda of like Jade on ANTM she hated the fact they colored her hair, but it really enhanced her for a different look.

I use to say black people don’t have blonde hair and blue eyes! Well I have green eyes and now auburn and blonde hair.

If you are of bi-racial heritage you should love and embrace both cultures to totally love you!

Respect!

Vanessa Williams has TWO BLACK PARENTS!!!!! That’s a little different from having One black and One White. Which in my book does not equal BLACK!

Being black includes all of the following: having black DNA, growing up in the culture, and having a black state of mind.

Mariah is missing two of the above.

And Chilli from TLC mother is Black and father is Native American. And from the looks of him, he’s got ALOT of Black Blood.

Sandra is right Mariah uses her “Blackness” when it is convenient for her.

——-

I agree and there’s NOTHING wrong with that. Like the Jews, I believe that ‘heritage’ is passed through the mother.

If you’re mother is White, then you are white (no matter how you look) and if your mother is black, then you are black ( no matter how you look).

The mother is usually the one that raises the child, so the child is going to adopt the mother’s culture. It makes sense.

I didnt know you could turn being black on and off. I didnt know that you had to wear a poster on your head saying Im black. Just because she came out one way does that mean she cant change. Everybody that is biracial dont have to “keep it real” to impress “us” the black folks. If she didnt grow up being around black culture then that is not who she is. She grew up with a white mother. Youll cannot point the finger at Mariah, because some of us “pure black folks” dont even do enough for our race to uplift it. And if Mariah Carey grew up with this type of attitude from black people, if she is denying that side of her then I dont blame her.

53.

@huh?
Yes, that is why in my post I pointed out that some of you MAY know other hits, It wasn’t an across-the-board statement. But I honestly believe she took the hip-hop angle this time around because she WILL get more notoriety with this. The other Nelly song (I can’t think of the name) was the one she had with Missy Elliott. But, either way, do you think more people know the song you mention or Promiscuous Girl? It’s just business that’s all.

That being said, (I don’t know if you are black or not, but for this point it doesn’t matter and this comment is not directed at you) I appreciate you for saying that because it lends to the point of how different we all are concerning everything from tastes in music to skin color. There is no such thing as “acting black” and it is just sad to see that written after all black people have gone through to break into so many things.

Hold on, I have to call this mess out:

#49
“Being black includes all of the following: having black DNA, growing up in the culture, and having a black state of mind.

Mariah is missing two of the above.”

Exactly what in the hell is black culture, and what about it qualifies us as black people? There’s a different answer to this question in whatever country you’re in, and America is unique in the fact that when the slaves were brought here they were stripped of their culture and identity. So tell me, what is black culture? Is it food? Music? Because, if you ask me, Mariah subscribes to all of those things that people like to consider “black” when they are, in fact, not.

And don’t get me started on what the hell a “black state of mind” is supposed to be.

Face it: In the United States black people have very few things that they can call “culture” if they have anything at all. We were stripped of it coming here. Does that suck? Yes. But there’s nothing we can do about it but move on. Saying someone isn’t black because they don’t subscribe to a culture that doesn’t fully represent black people and is only a list of negative stereotypes and constructs is foolish. If Mariah has black blood in her she’s part black. Period. It doesn’t matter what she looks or acts like. And just because she’s part black doesn’t mean that everything she puts out has to be Jazz, Rap, R&B or Gospel. But that’s a different argument all together.

The shackles were unlocked a long time ago, but some black people just refuse to take them off…

So let me get this right…white folks are getting too “comfortable” talking about race — but it’s perfectly fine to call Sandra Berhard a dyke. That hypocrite kool-aid must taste mighty fine.

Sandra comes from a long line of social/political humorists — i.e. Paul Mooney and Margaret Cho. She speaks the truth and is often funny. Apparently the art of satire is lost on many these days.

Talent aside Mariah Carey IS a straight-up wack job. Her bizarre insecurities cause her to do some rather strange things. I mean, she ONLY wants to filmed from one side of her face. If you watch that ridiculous Pepsi commercial she is ALWAYS facing the same direction. She always glares to the right. Even when that motorcycle is leaping left, her damn face is pointed right. What about all those hilariously staged “candid shots”. Poor little rich girl with glittery psychosis. To not mock her is a crime.

Also — Star Jones can take a flying leap…if she can even get those tittays off the ground. She was combative for the entire interview — just looking for a fight. Apparently in some alternate universe somebody told Star she looked cute. Up is down and ugly is cute. The fact that anybody would defend such an abomination of a woman is beyond me. She is a grotesque self-referential snakey opportunist with no shame.

Star should really be nicer to Sandra, they have so much in common — they both got big mouths and they are both in gay marriages.

#43 HAHAHA….u are DEAD WRONG for that. LMAO!!!!!!!!!!

First of all, let me start by makin it clear that Mariah has ALWAYS been an RnB artist. Her debut single, “Vision of Love”, was #1 on the RnB charts b4 it was #1 on the pop charts. and btw, the only difference between a pop song and an RnB song is the voice on it….put Mariah’s voice on a Britney-type joint and it becomes RnB. I think it is ignorant of the general public to say she was tryna be “black” simply because of collabos with rappers….i mean she did collaborate with Luther Vandross in ‘94….why wasnt she black then?

Also, what the FUCK is a black state of mind??^^^…..havin a cheap as weave in ur head?….no wait, it must be havin 5 kids before the age of 20…..puh-fuckin-lease….it is sad that such words are even spoken.

Like someone said^^, if halle and alicia are considered black, then why not Mariah??

#2 why would Mariah have to dye her hair to look white? if she had dark hair, she would still look bi racial. Mariah have neva given me the impression that she wanted to be either or, she is simply Mariah. Not once have I heard Mariah cater her songs to whites, most of her songs caters to black people. Even though we know all races of people love her music. This is what I can’t understand about some folks, why wouldn’t Mariah, Halle or any other bi racial celebrity or singer not date white or act partially white, they are half and half, right?

64.

I do not think we will ever know what Mariah’s true race is, but I do not think she wants to be labeled as any one thing, that why she says she is “bi-racial”. And she damn sure don’t want to be labeled as Black(only).

It wasn’t that bad. Star calls it like she sees it. She has relationships and conversations with celebrities that the everyday person does not have access to - who is to say Mariah has not been forthcoming about her background in everyday life? It was her management, husband/spin doctor who kept her ethnicity under wraps.

Now the exchange between Sandra and Elizabeth was quite entertaining. Joy needs to sit down.

Everybody has issues. I like Star. I’m not mad at her.

First of all I think that sometimes you people over-do it with your slanderous language, calling someone a dyke is mean rude and uncalled for, even if Sandra Bernhard is gay what does that have to do with being a bitch. (I love Sandra she’s hilarious, take the stick out your ass and giggle) I think people’s true colors show when they open their mouths. Its 2006 get with the gay shit. Damn.

I love Mariah but there are two sides to this coin.

I must say Mariah looks good blonde. Her natural color doesnt give her that speaker phone look. I think Mariah may be a little insecure about her good side because she has a grill issue on the other side(arent we all a lil insecure). So fuckin what? Why does someone have to be uncomfortable with being black just because they dont have their natural hair color or natural hair. Does she have to have dreads just to be down too?

If thats the case all of the famous broads your frends and family and alot of the chicks that frequent this site are all playing themselves because they are using chemicals to straighten their hair. And no, relaxers dont make your hair more manageable, it makes it fall out faster.

On the other side I know people who have met Mariah and said that she is waaay over the top with that vivacious “Darling” shit. Kinda annoying im sure. But underneath all that playing she’s doing is a baad intelligent bitch (read her lyrics, most of us can’t spell the shit she’s writing.)

If Mariah really is mixed then im sure she had a hard time growing up in Long Island, NY which to this day is one of the most racist places to live in NY. Therefore no I dont knock her if she is a lil kooky either.

I don’t think Mariah tries to “act black” at all, but she definitley leaned on black folks when white folks didn’t want her ass no more…. Like Sandra said…

I’m not a fan of Sandra or Mariah, but damnit Sandra made a good point, and yes Mariah is a hellava singer, but as far as her public persona, well it seems mighty damn fake to me, but oh well…

And I don’t think Sandra is going to far, or even white folks in general… Black comedians crack on white people all the time, but when they speak on us we get all sensitive, but then we want to be treated equally in this society…. I like people who speak freely and say how they really feel more than I like people who pretend to be down or all racially sensitive and then go home and call us niggers to their friends **coughs Eminem** cough…

And another thing, just because your black doesnt mean you can tell another black person they are not black enough. Alot of blk people who are interested in what we do but were not introduced to those things growing up are afraid or dejected because our brothers and sisters shunned them.

Just because someone else is into something you or your friends were never introduced to, it doesnt make them less blk, thats just their flow. We aren’t carbon copies. Then blk women wonder why good black men run off with a perky white woman. Expand your mind, and love each other because we are, not because of who we are.

Very well put **claps**

sandra has alot of nerve, she doesnt know what the hell shes talkin about. mariahs always made r&b and soul music from vision of love and emotions, mariahs record labal wanted to mold her when she first came out, into a woman that was always coverd up and the inocent type and i heard in a interveiw that mariah always loved rap and from the begining wanted to work with rappers but her record label didnt want her to because they thought it wouldnt be right for image they wanted her to hav, so when she broke out she started workin with rappers which she always wanted to do and dressin more of her own taste. Sandra is so stupid why the hell is she talkin about someone she knows nothin about.
