I have to admit, I always liked some of Mariah Carey’s music, but since I’m not a big pop fan, I became a real fan of Mariah after her Fantasy album, when she began singing more R&B rather than pop. Some people say that Mariah wanted to sing R&B all along but her husband/manager wanted her to have a certain image. Not sure if all that’s true but it’s something to think about. And you can’t totally accuse her of dying her hair blond to look white, you can, but she’s certainly not the only one. I could accuse a lot of other ethnic singers and actresses of the same thing (for example, J-Lo and Beyonce (that’s my girl and all but I’m keeping it real), and their are plenty of others. Personally if I was light as Mariah, Beyonce or J-Lo I would purposely not color my hair blonde because I’m not trying to be mistaken for a White person, but that’s me. There was an interesting article in a recent publication about a biracial family: black mother, white father, and three children. The parents are raising the children to identify with both races and the children are secure in their racial identity. So secure, in fact, that they each answer differently when filling out questionaires that require them to identify with a particular race. One girl checks both African-American and Caucasian. The son checks Other. The third child just says Bi-Racial.

In this day and age, there are more and more biracial children and requiring them to choose one over the other is not fair. If they are raised properly by both parents then being biracial is not ever going to be a problem for them. It will only be a problem for those who want them to choose. It hasn’t been for me.

Mariah was raised by her white mother. However, as she got older and learned more about her father’s heritage then she began to identify with that side. She may have chosen to call herself one or the other based on the music hotness of the day. As a biracial woman she can identify with both and if that works for her then how can you hate on her? I’m biracial and kids are cruel as hell growing up! She’s learned to love herself,so she dyed her hair, why doea it have to be to look white, maybe it just enhances her beauty. Where in my post did I say that African Americans did not contribute to the melting pot that is America’s cultural fabric? Read my post again and get your facts straight. When I asked the question “what is black culture?” I wasn’t denying these things. Rather, I was asking you to acknowledge them. I will not go as far as to say that American Culture IS “black culture,” because American culture is comprised of every group of people that found their way (forcefully or not) to this country. I will say, however, that black culture is something that has been emulated by other races. why? Because it can be. It doesn’t take much to eat a piece of fried chicken or listen to rap music, but how easy it to emulate Asian American culture? Native American culture? African’s had the specifics of their culture taken from them when they came here. Sure, we can listen to “black” music, use “black” slang and eat soul food. But how many of us can trace our roots back to the original African tribes that we were bartered and taken from? Not too many. People tend to forget that Africa is a CONTINENT, composed of many different countries which are composed of many different tribes that contain many different cultures. It was this complexity that was lost when we were brought here. All we have is this petty little thing we call “African”. THAT’s what I was referring to when I said black people had their culture stripped. And, I don’t know about you, but I would rather live my life in this country and be apart of its culture as a whole.

I’m not going to talk about Brazil, the Caribbean or Fuji because those are different places and the black experience there is completely different.

That’s not good enough. Again, examine the cultures of people who willingly came here or were already here. You will find that their cultures (beliefs and traditions) are a lot more extensive and blatant than ours. Again, it’s not something to be proud of, but it’s the truth, and all we can do is move on from that and continue to make our mark on society, not shun people because they don’t constrict to our stringent and inaccurate conception of what it means to be black. If you’re black, you’re black. That’s really all that should matter.

As for 1 and 2: how can you accuse Mariah of this, when more than half the black people in the US don’t have an understanding of the history of our people? And yet you know what? They’re still black. It would be great if everyone had a thorough understanding of their history, but our ethnicities shouldn’t be and aren’t dependent on this. It’s not just a problem facing black people, either. EVERYONE needs to know more about history in an effort to ensure that it doesn’t get repeated. As for 3….that just makes no sense. We may all be black, but we all have different opinions and beliefs. It’s impossible to stand in solidarity on everything.
