When I first heard about this, I was like “uh-oh” but that looks like it could be really good. I should’ve known because there’s no way Debbie Allen is going to associate her name with some mess.

I love Fantansia. She has a beautiful spirit. I hope that we will get behind her and support her, and this movie. Good, bad or indifferent the story his real. Her story is the story of so many of our baby girls and we need to show them love, give them respect, and provide direction in all of their lives. I have two teenage daughters and I pray that my people, my community will always show them the way instead of tear them down. I love my people so much it warms my heart to see Ms. Fantansia following her dreams. Peace and Blessing to everyone.

The reason why you probably can’t see it, most likely, is because you probably don’t have the latest version of Flash Player. That’s probably why you can’t see it. Try Downloading the new verson of Flash Player, then maybe you’ll probably be able to see it. :-)

I saw the commercial last night and it kinda upset me. Was the Black woman from AI saying they’ve received a lot of calls saying Tasia was a bad influence on America?
Also is her real daughter in the movie, I don’t know how old the little girl is?

16.

myshell

Wednesday, July 12, 2006 /

Yes,I heard that. I’m not sure if I heard it during the show or after she won.I guess ppl felt she wasnt an AI because of who she was. Being a teenage mother, unmarried, or whatever they felt like judging her for.

17.

helluvadrug

Wednesday, July 12, 2006 /

@asbury: i’m one of those people who were upset that she was the “american idol.” she was a high school dropout and unwed mother. she embodied the stereotype of the black woman. BUT, i am glad she won. i genuinely like her as a person. i hope she and her career do really well.

I can’t wait to see it. I cried when she won AI. I was so happy for her. She does seem down to earth. Not trying to take it to church, but isn’t it amazing how GOD gives us so many gifts. When ever I hear this girl sing or speak about her life I am so overwhelmed that it makes me cry. Its something about her that touches your heart. I’m so happy for her. GOD is with her and I feel it. That man is so amazing.

I don’t know if the woman was from AI, but that’s exactly what she said. The local news (if I remember correctly it was Fox News) covered a similar story while the show was still going on. They were talking about the fact that she was a young mom. It’s a shame! I was thinking that the bad publicity may hurt her chances for winning but she won. It would explain how she ended up in the bottom 3 that week with Jennifer Hudson and Latoya London. That seemed a little too fishy. Anyway, I will definitely be trying to watch the movie or get someone to record it for me. I think I’ll cop the book too!

Really now, how is Fantasia considered a bad example because of being an unwed mother? It’s 2006! It’s like everybody’s an unwed mother cause people don’t get married like the use to and divorce rates are higher than marriage rates! I think she is an EXCELLENT example of how to be a young mother and how to take care of a child when you are still a child! I don’t justify or really agree with having a child out of wedlock or at 16 or anything, but people do slip up! At least she didn’t take the easy way out and have an abortion like so many people do or FORCE their child to do! She did what she had to do and didn’t give up on what she wanted to do with her life.
And even though I’m not the biggest Fantasia fan, I don’t dislike her because of her life story. But I’ll watch the movie.

Thank you sexyredd, you took the words right out of my mouth. Teenage pregnancy rate is so high right now, I think young girls need someone like Fanny to look up to, to let them know that even though it looks like all odds are against them they can make a life for themselves and take care of their responsibility!!! I’m definitely going to watch the movie

(#26) Ummm…what is that supposed to mean?…but anywayz…I LOVE Lifetime and I like Fantasia so i’ll be watching that…but I don’t think that being an unwed mother and a dropout makes you any less qualified to be an American Idol…

30.

helluvadrug

Wednesday, July 12, 2006 /

i don’t think i was judging her. when u sign up for american idol, i’m pretty sure there is a morality clause. they research your background extensively…..just like frenchie davis found out. i do not think that fantasia is a bad person at all. i think we all make mistakes but we have to learn from them.

@sexyred: everyone is not an unwed mother and we shouldn’t accept that.

it looks good but u cant really say she is acting cause that is her real life story. shes not doing nething out of her nature. now the song they played ( the 1st one) deos not do her ne justice. actually neither songs are good for the commercial. they are making her look like billie holiday in the end….but i may be tuning in.

#30; I AM AN UNWED MOTHER BY CHOICE, AND EVERYONE DOESN’T BELIEVE IN THE INSTITUTION OF MARRIAGE OR DOESN’T WANT TO BE FORCED INTO MARRIAGE BECAUSE THEY ARE PREGNANT. NO U DON’T HAVE TO ACCEPT IT BECAUSE THAT IS UR CHOICE BUT JUST LIKE U HAVE AN OPINION ABOUT UNWED MOTHERS, WE HAVE OUR OWN OPINIONS ABOUT BEING FORCED INTO THE NORM OF SOCIETY TO WANT TO GET MARRIED JUST BECAUSE WE ARE HAVING A BABY OUT OF WEDLOCK. FANTASIA IS A GOOD INSPIRATION AND ROLE MODEL FOR TODAY’S SOCIETY.

Whether or not she’s playing herself, it is definitely still acting. She is 22, she is acting like she is 16 in several of the scenes! She’s acting like she’s auditioning for idol all over again. Just try it for yourself, go back and try to relive your life, it wouldn’t be as easy as you think because you’d have to ACT like it is the present. So, just because it is her life it is still acting. They only way she wouldn’t be acting is if it were the present.

BTW, I love this website! :-)

All well and good, but why do I get the sneaky feeling that this is going to be another one of those “black men are no good and worthless” movies?

38.

helluvadrug

Wednesday, July 12, 2006 /

@lola: i don’t judge you for being an unwed mother. i do realize that the reality is a lot babies are born this way. i am a free, independent thinker. i challenge everything. i don’t think that marriage is for everyone. i also don’t think that just because YT gets married at a much, much higher rate than blacks makes us wrong and them right. the reality is that the institution of marriage has lost its original purpose. i just hope that the children don’t suffer. they need BOTH parents to play active roles in thier lives to help with their development.

i really do love fantasia. her story is very inspirational. she has really turned a negative situation into something positive that will change so many lives. i can understand both sides of the argument, BUT at the end of the day, the right person won.

What I mean by “the present”. For instance, reality show stars aren’t acting because they are living in the present (no acting involved) and playing themselves. Fantasia is acting because it goes back to where she needs to “act” a certain way. Perhaps now, people will stop saying she isn’t really acting because she’s playing herself.

#15 Don’t let that upset u gurl, u know anybody besides white girls having babies out of wedlock upsets white america, like we give a fugg. When they’re giving theirs up for adoption or having abortions, it’s okay then. Fantasia is doing her thang, can’t wait to see the movie and she have a beautiful little girl, that could be her daughter, not the one playing her.

Well that white chick Nikki Mckibbin or whatever her name is from AI’s first season was an unwed mom and no one had a problem with THAT. So an unwed black mother rises up from poverty and despair to pursue her dream what isn’t to admire about that? In my opinion she is someone who SHOULD be looked up to for her success.

45.

Freida

Wednesday, July 12, 2006 /

Mizbhaven, you also left out the fact that Nikki Mckibbin was also a stripper, but no one was making a fuss out of that.

I have to agree with #44, not to mention at least Fantasia had a bunch of talent and is remembered for the best idol performance. whereas, not only was nikki and unwed mother, but she couldn’t even hold a tune yet I heard no on complaining about her being “unwed” mother.

I don’t know if the issue with Fantasia was because she was black or because the public was afriad because she did have so much talent and COULD actually win, whereas Nikki on the other hand had no chance of winning at all so they really didn’t care. That could be why Nikki’s “unwed motherness” went ignored, because she had little talent.

It is most ideal to have two parents. We as a community have dropped the ball on that. Know that America as a whole(not just blacks), has dropped the ball on that. Sometimes there are extenuating circumstances that prevent two parents from being together. I wouldn’t wish an abusive father, or addicted parent on any child. I am thankful that some women and some men have enough sense to leave the other troubled parent. Make no mistake, raising a child alone can be done- my aunts did it. I thank God, though, for having two involved. Idol had a lot of calls from parents wanting her kicked off the show because they did not like her being an unwed parent. Americans don’t take family seriously enough, so it is not surprising that the black commnity has a lot of broken homes.

“Alex said:

I read the book and Zion’s daddy did seem to be no good and worthless but there is also her boyfriend who she was with while she was on A.I. and she had nothing but good things to say about him in the book. So we will see the no good man but also the hard working black man that was willing to help a single mom raise another man’s child.

I think her story is an interesting one and should be told but I’m not looking forward to seeing her playing herself. She’s a singer, not an actor. Some of you may say who better to play yourself than yourself but naw it’s not like that. You still need some acting skills before rolling up on a tv or movie set and she has none. But I might be wrong and could be pleasantly surprised. I just think a real actor playing her would have been the better route. We’ll see though.

I used to frequent the AI boards when Fantasia was on the show . You would not believe the stuff that was said about the girl because she had a baby and had dropped out of school. She still doesnt get a lot of respect from alot of people on that forum, but they love Kelly Clarkson. They say so much racist stuff about her and Paris Bennett that it wasnt funny. I remember setting a few people straight before I realized that ignorance is sometimes innate and Im not going to change their minds.

People really kill me when they speak about Fanny being illiterate. It seems that she should have kept the fact that she has problems reading a secret since she received so much slack for it, and we wonder why there are so many kids dropping out school. Alot of them are too afraid to ask for help because they would risk being teased. I for one am glad that she came forward.Other people will see it and get some help as well, and btw she is not completely illiterate. To the posters who are talking about her reading …go somewhere and get some sense.

Fantasia can sing no doubt. And I don’t wanna hear all that bunk about her being a bad role model cause of her OOW child. That ain’t nothing new and it ain’t exclusive to black folk. With that said, this girl is ghetto with a capital G. I saw her perform on Independence Day in Philly. She was a hot azz mess. She had on some coochie cutter shorts, cellulite and cottage cheese everywherr. Hair looked like who done it and why. She was sweating and just very unappealing looking. her performance was not up to par either. I’m not hating ont he girl, but she really needs to step her game up. She has potential but she has to realize she ain’t in Podunk, North Carolina anymore. She could learn a thing or two about image and showwomanship from Beyonce or hell, even Kelly Clarkson.

65.

GG Boo

Thursday, July 13, 2006 /

First of all, High Point in nowhere near Podunk. Yes, like most places it has its hoods and valleys, but it is also the world’s largest generator of crafts (furniture, home furnishings, etc…) You might say so what but I bet if you have any real pieces of furniture in your house, then it came from High Point. Next thing is, she hasn’t had training from the age of 3 like some artists, so it’s going to take her a little more time to get acclamated and figure out what works and what doesn’t. I believe that her performance may not have been up to par, but I saw her week after week performing live in front of millions of people and she did fine. Everyone has a bad performance every once in a while. She has a story to tell, it’s a sad one but one that affects so many young girls. I am not mad.

I’m so sick and %^%^ing tired of seeing all these “Color Purple - Madea - Waiting to Exhale” type movies remade over and over again that depict black men in a negative light. Can I see a movie, article, news report, or just something that represents black men that don’t abuse their woman, that don’t commit crimes, that do bust their a$$ to take care of their children and make their marriage work. I respect Fantasia and her struggles but I’m tired of seeing us depicted as a stereotype that can only make it out there if we know how to sing, dance, or entertain. OTN, I wish the best for Fantasia and her success but I will not be watching this one, I hope that check that Lifetime gave her and Debbie Allen was worth it.

Those legs are toned, tight and smooth.

Perhaps you were referring or thinking about Kelly Clarkson when you mentioned cellulite as she’s the only idol winner I’ve seen with fat hanging all over the place. The little mesh number she had on. Yuck!!!

71.

Correction Kelly is the only WOMAN winner I’ve seen in concert photos with fat and cellulite hanging all over the place. Ruben doesn’t count, he’s a man.

Fantasia might be thick but looking at that photo, she’s in great shape. I hate it when people post lies just to be nasty when it’s so easy to prove them wrong by posting ONE photo.

Alex

Thursday, July 13, 2006 /

I agree with Ghostpsoster which was the point I was trying to make in my earlier post. I mean, like would it kill us to see some movie with a strong black man in the lead? (Something definitely you won’t see in Little Man - which a friend of mine saw earlier this week and he told me that how bad you think it is, it’s even WORSE) I can’t wait for Miami Vice. At least I know Jamie Foxx isn’t going to play the fool or be weak in that film. I’ll take what I can get.

73.

Denise

Thursday, July 13, 2006 /

Guys give it a rest with the “potraying black folks negatively” propaganda. If our men would start treating our women right there wouldn’t be this story to tell. Why don’t you stop looking at this as something negative and see it in the light Fantasia is bringing it in- TO INSPIRE..because whether we want to believe it or not there is still men likr that out there, there is still young girls, even grown woman going through what Fantasia went through, whether or not you think it should be brought to the public is your own opinion. But I see no reason to pretend like none of this stuff takes place, so we can be potrayed positively to the “white folks.” Why don’t we start making a change in your own communities then maybe we would have different stories to tell.

And then you brought up Miami Vice- an action movie with supreme violence? How could you give that a thumbs up and give a movie about a real life situation with someone overcoming their obstacle a thumbs down?

I will never get some people, seriously.

74.

Azaria

Thursday, July 13, 2006 /

LOL. You people are nuts. I see there are lots of ghetto birds posting on this website. I am allowed to have an opinion of Fantasia. And as far as Kelly and Beyonce, yes Fantasia could learn a whole hell of a lot from both of them. Seeing as how they had two of the hottest(best selling) CD’s of 2005 and 2004 respectively. I was talking about not clothes, but how to put on a show and present yourself to your audience. Kelly doesn’t have to have on designer clothes to appease her fans. She wears what works for their sensibilities. but why should I argue about a ghetto bird like Fanny Bo Bo? Her career will be over in a matter of years.

75.

ghostposter

Thursday, July 13, 2006 /

at Denise… its not prpaganda if its the whole truth. Black men are being potrayed negatively by the media, and what makes it worse is that our own people, not only don’t recognize the issue, but are producing these stereotypical programs.
I recognize that there are black men out there who don’t treat women right, and that this story should be told, but to constantly portray this as the only story to be told…would consequently, mean that this ’story’ of a neagtivly depicted black man is propaganda, because it’s only the half truth.
Dont get it twisted, I see the movie as something positive that Fantasia is bringing- TO INSPIRE..because as you put it “there is still young girls, even grown woman going through what Fantasia went through” All I ask is that you recognize that there are also issues with black men that need to be addresed that many of your brothers, uncles, fathers, and friends are going thorugh, but I dont see anyhting being depicted on the screen to inspire them. All I see is negative images…so what’s available to inspire them if they consistently see themselves being depicted as bad or negative.
Also, I could care less if this story is brought to the public but the whole story should be brought to the public not just one negative facet.
