Can I just say, for all the folks sayin that only Black Americans put such emphasis on skin color, I think you should study world issues more. In India and other Asian countries, dark complextions are undesirerable and associated with being poor. When women want to get a husband, they don’t dare go out in the sun for fear of getting darker. Also, skin bleaching in common in these countries. And in Puerto Rico, it is the same, the darker you are, for the most part, the poorer the area you live in. Have you ever watched Telemundo? The main stars are light, and the servants and so forth are dark.
I’m not saying it’s right, I’m just stating facts. So no, it’s CERTAINLY NOT JUST AMERICANS!!!!!!

@ PhillyLala, that’s so true. People just don’t know. Ever been to Sao Paolo, Brazil, or any part of Brazil for that matter? It’s rampant as hell there. And in Africa, they were facing a major crisis a few years ago because women were getting ill from the bleaching creams they were using. It was due to the poisonous content in the creams. I think it happened in South Africa.

I guess I can’t get mad at folks for not knowing these things though because very few people travel outside of the four corners of their cities or states and even fewer people read up on these types of subjects.

I am Afriacn-American, thanks. I don’t just think all black women have weaves. I have very long hair, so I have learned not to prejudge my fellow sisters. Just as we all come in different shades of brown; we all come with different hair types, textures, and lengths. I actually thought her hair was real. It’s been the same length for practically all of her career. Most black celeb women had shorter hair when they first appeared on the scene (Eve, Nia, Jada, Lil Kim, Janet, Raven, Brandy, etc.) so of course we knew they were weaving it.

It’s sad how obsessed the black community is with skin tone. It’s time to stop blaming the white community and admit that this shade obsession is a black phenomenon. As a teenager, I began to realize how little my looks were valued in the black community, while amongst whites/Asians I have always been considered beautiful. My advice to dark-skinned women is to open up your dating options.

My husband(white) still thinks I’m the most beautiful woman in the world after being together for over six years. After reading this board, I am sure I would not have found a man of his family/educational background who would have wanted to make a life with me as a dark-skinned black woman.

This is my first post. I just had to make a comment this time. I am often on the website. I usually just read the comments and look at the picutes. However, I cannnot stand the way there is a constant comparison to light and dark people. I agree with #32. Black Americans are the only people that look at a dark complexion as being the ugliest thing in the world. Every where else around the world embraces a dark complexion. I am a dark skinned, fairly attractive female. I went to the Dominican Republic and I have never felt so beautiful in my life. The first comment everyone made about me was about the color of my skin. Men and women. There, they actually want darker skin. I think Black Americans have been poisoned by American society. This effects our children in a major way. STOP THE MADNESS!!!!!!!! By the way, I love this website.

First of all, I used to visit this site on a regular basis but I could not deal with the ignorance anymore. I came back to see if things had took a turn for the better but I guess not - y’all still arguing about the light skin vs dark skin thing. Will this discussion ever end?! The bottom line is that will always be Black people who will ostracize other Black people base solely on their skin tone. Ignorance is bliss and we all know there is no shortage of ignorance in the Black community or in the large society as whole for that matter. However, I do believe that there are much better subjects we could spend our time discussing instead of skintone.

To the dark skin sisters out there who have enough of this too dark stuff, please do not get up in the igorance and please love yourself. Also, be willing to look outside of your race for someone willing to love you for you. I have recently discovered that the same qualities that Black men don’t like in you are usually the same qualities that we draw men of other races to you. Oh the irony. So if nice white guy from work asks you to go out with him. Just do it. It could end up being one of your better dating experiences.
