good observation. i work in the fashion industry, so i get a lot of the inside scoop….apparently, beyonce is planning on releasing an album of all balads after BDay drops. People in the industry know what goes on behind the scenes. we only see the cleaned up version of everything…trust. Not just that, Beyonce’s first album was one of the albums involved in the payola scandal with SONY records. Why would other female artists in the industry respect Beyonce after being illegally pushed and promoted by her record label? the public doesn’t really think or know about things like the payola scandal. without it, Beyonce’s first album would not have sold the way it did, and since SONY can’t do that anymore because they were fined $10 million dollars, Beyonce’s new song isn’t doing well at all. See what happens when you have to play fair.

As much as I don’t want to bring up you know who, payola was one of the reasons for the success of CIL….and there is no question about it. Basically, Payola is when a record company sends bribes to radio station DJs to continuously play someone’s record. When sony did it, some of Beyonce’s songs happened to be one of the albums it was done for. law enforment even exposed the memos sent around the sony office speaking about what dj was getting what expensive gift. Think about it, if djs are getting plama tvs, trips around the world, money, etc. to play someone’s music more than others, of course that person is going to do well…but then it’s not completely on the artists’ own merit. People need to be smart and stop allowing themselves to be bamboozled by the media and radio.

I have no ill will towards LL…but if comparisons are to be made, they should be made to Mya, Ashanti, Ciara and all of those midlevel careers. To compare to someone who’s made and sold more records isn’t fair to either artist.
But to those who seem to feel LL was some kind of underdog/victim…PLEASE. This is the game they play. She and the other deposed DC member knew who their manager was from the door and truthfully it just so happened his daughter was the most talented. That was then and that is now.
LL cried all the way to the bank that helped her open a store and stay in the game enough to make a solo record. I’d say she came out all right.
As far as payola, it has been around since the record business began. To say that it impacted ONE album is ludicrous and shows how much folks outside the business don’t know how it works.
I’d be curious to know just how much the other artist has already racked up in presale. That just makes good business sense, people. Only business, never personal. That’s the game and if you in it to win it, that’s how you play.

In response to #107…thank you for you profound words {*sarcasm*}. We know that payola has existed since the beginning of time but does that make it right?? And guess what…SONY got caught and it just so happens that Beyonce was one of the names involved in who benefited…so of course she will be the one pointed out by those that know about it. Payola robs the public of the chance to select what THEY want to hear. It gives the impression that someone is GREATER than they really are. If a person is at the top of the charts on some shady shit, and nobody knows, everyone is going to think…hey, if this artist is that good, maybe I should buy into it too.

The bottom line is that those girls in DC were obviously not given ROOM to blossom into real talents. Look at Kelly….who knows what she would be capable of if she was given her fair share. And as far as Letoya…you say she was laughing all the way to the bank….what is cash when all that YOU have worked for is being controlled by someone else? To let one member outshine the rest is indeed the way the game is played…but guess what….the sun don’t shine forever. With regard to her singing ability, I agree she is not the best live, but neither is Mary J. Blige, Janet Jackson, Kelly Rowland (yeah I said it), nor a lot of other “singers” that are out today.

And I have never understood how so many people think Beyonce is a great singer. She can hold a tune and can sing loud, but to hear people talk, one would swear she was Kelly Price, or Jill Scott, or Yolanda Adams. Let’s face it, Beyonce’s light skin and big butt, and blonde hair (so she could cater to main stream white America), has played a HUUUUUGE role in her success. Beyonce could not even survive American Idol in my opinion.

By the way, anyone who don’t believe Beyonce doing the pre-order album release on the same day as Letoya’s album release, was done on purpose is foolish. Its a bit early to call her album a commercial hit but I’m happy to see her succeed. I think the girl has a lot of class for not stooping to the level of the Knowles. She could have blasted them publicly but she didn’t and for that I have a lot of respect for her cuz I myself probably would have put both of them on blast. It would have been so easy for her to start a public war of words with them, that MTV would follow intently (a la 50 cent and Eminem), to help promote her album.
