MYA TALKS ABOUT HER NEW ALBUM, ACTING & MORE

Back after 3 years, Mya is excited about her upcoming release, ‘Liberation,’ stating it’s her most “personal” album yet. She recently say down with BV Music to update us on what she has been up to.

BV: Tell us about your new album. What has this journey been like for you?
M: It wasn’t a production team situation, but I went into [the project] knowing exactly what I wanted. I found some producers that had the flavor that I liked. Some of them were a little busy [laughs]. It was a really smooth transition and process for me. The lyrics and songs keep [the album] flowing together. Everything is very original in its own way.

BV: Are there any artists that you are interested in working with in the future?
M: I’ve always wanted to get in the studio with Lauryn Hill. I’ve never really [had the chance] to work with a woman; there’s always a lot of guys in production and songwriting. But with her perspective and what she’s been through, she could definitely bring something else to the table as far as vocal arrangements. Lauryn having that West Indian flare as well, it would be really interesting.

BV: You have been working on some films recently. How was your experience on the set of ‘The Metrosexual?’
M: Very brief but entertaining. It was like watching ‘Sex in the City’ all over again, but the guys being in the female [role]; them trying to figure out the dating scene, talking to each other and socializing, just as women are portrayed. It’s cute.

BV: Who do you think is the most Metrosexual guy in the public eye right now?
M: Hmmm… Dang, everybody’s a thug! Oh yeah, Kanye for sure. He’s “SoHo” Metrosexual. He has some vintage stuff going on, so he’s not all the way ’spa’ Metrosexual. He’s clean cut.

BV: You are also in the upcoming movie, ‘Ways of the Flesh.’ Were there any odd moments on the set?
M: It was great working on that movie. I got to do a little comedy [laughs], and a little bit of drama, breaking up with Brian White in the movie. He did me dirty. That was very easy to play, by the way. My father was there [during filming]. There’s a semi-love scene, but all clothes are on. It’s really a fantasy in [Brian's] mind. My father had a difficult time watching that!

BV: What’s your biggest triumph?
Positivity, all the way. I’ve had reality checks, which I thank God for. Everything’s not always about you, everything can’t always happen your way. The way I used to think was leaning towards negativity; what I thought people thought about me, or how people might react. Nothing is over-thought anymore. I can’t please the world, but I still keep people in consideration, and feelings in mind. I deal with situations in a more positive way now. Right now I’m ready to live.
