CULLEN JONES INKS MILLION DOLLAR DEAL W/ NIKE

cullen_jones.jpg

Contrary to that horrible ass stereotype, black people can actually swim. Take for example, Cullen Jones, a three-time All-American swimmer out of North Carolina State. The 22 year old just inked a multi-year, multi-million dollar with NIKE. Jones is one of the fastest sprinters in swimming and is currently ranked first in the world in the 50-meter freestyle.

Here is what he had to say about getting all that money..

What’s it like being paid?
Cullen: I had some reporters ask me what it’s like to be paid now, how much different is it, is it a job. And my answer is swimming is something I love, and it is fun. The day that stops, that’s the day I stop swimming. I didn’t get to this point for the money. I love being nervous up on the blocks, and being hungry.

Congrats to him! Hopefully this will inspire many other black children to get their swim on! We need to end that stereotype.

lol Swimmers do have foot wear! “Shine on the Titanic” had his shoes on when the ship began to sink! So, black folks have always been good swimmers!

    “Shine on the Titanic”

The 12th of May was one hell of a day
    When the news got around
    To all the seaport towns
That the great Titanic was sinking down.

Up stepped a Black man from the deck below (that they called Shine)
Hollerin’, “Captain, Captain, don’t you know
there’s forty feet of water on the boiler room floor”.

The captain said, “Go back, you dirty black,
we got a thousand pumps to keep this water back.

Shine went back below and began to think
That, umph, this big bad mutha-mutha is bound to sink.

Shine said, it’s fish in the ocean, crabs in the sea
But it’s one time you good cool white people ain’t gone bullshit me.

Shine went on the deck, jumped overboard,
waved his ass, begin to swim.
With a thousand millionaires lookin’ at him.

The captain’s wife stepped on the deck sayin’,
“Shine, Shine, please save poor me.
I’ll give you all the good coochie you can see.

Shine said, “Your coochie is good, and that is true,
but it’s some hoes down on 5th Street that’ll make an ass out of you!

There’s coochie on land, and coochie on sea.
I got twenty-five hoes in New York just waiting for me!

Captain’s daughter stepped on the deck sayin’,
“Shine, Shine, please save poor me.
Said, I’ll name this little kid after thee.”

Shine said, “Bitch, Ya knocked up and gone have a kid,
but your ass got to hit this water
    just like ol’ Shine did.”

    Here come the Captain,
    “Shine, Shine please save me.
I’ll make you richer than any Shine can be.”

Shine said, “Captain, to save you would be very fine
but I got to first save this black ass of mine.”

Said, money on land and money on sea.
I got a thousand dollars in New York just waitin’ on me.

    Shine said, “Shark, look out!
Said, I know some of this black ass you’d like to taste,
but from here to New York is gonna be one hell of a race.”

When the news got around the world
that the great Titanic had sunk,
Shine was in Harlem on a hundred and twenty-fifth street
    damn near drunk.

  6. That’s what’s up. It good to see a brother do his thing in other areas.

  7. LOL meatloaf okay you are crazy

Congrats to this brother. I’m happy for him. Bust down the walls of opposition and show those coming up that they can do anything they set their mind to especially swimming.

Since when was it a stereotype that Blacks couldn’t swim. Shoot I can get my swim on!

  8. I’m glad he’s got an endorsement deal. We can do more than dunk, tackle and run track. Get that money, bwoy! #1, Nike makes water shoes, flip flops and sandals, where have you been?

  9. Sonnie_NC

Will he try out for the olympic team?

    #8 Jewel13 ~

You forgot, we’re #1 at golf, baseball, play soccer, tennis, marshal arts, ski, volleyball, porn, rugby, fish and NASCAR! Don’t sell us short! And, don’t forget, we were shut out of a lot of sports for decades! Oh, I forgot the Jamaican bobsleders! hehe!

We finally got some swimming pools in the backyards and Tiger’s dad snuck him on the the all white golf courses! Venus and Serena excelled because they had to dodge bullets while practicing! hehe!

We gettin in where we fittin in!

    You think?

  11. LOL@Meatloaf
    ======================

@Jewel13…Ahh, didn’t think about water shoes, flip flops and sandals (guess I’m behind the times). That’s why I like CL…….the people are so smart here.

I am happy for the brother though. Maybe this will encourage swimming among the African American population. I’m tired of pulling brothers out of the water every 4th of July.

What exactly do you look at to tell if a person is very humble? How can you tell by looking? That nigga might be a cold-hearted water moccasin! You must have the gift to judge humility based on appearence!

THANKS for posting this. I saw the meet where he set the World Record in the relay with Michael Phelps….
He is the only African-American to ever hold a world record in swimming. So much props to this brother, who’s from New York. And in his interview he did seem humble and pretty cool. I’ll definitlely be rooting for him at the next Olympics….!!!!

  41. blobbybaby

    @25
lmao, I was thinking the same thing!
most blk sportsmen do, in fact most blk men do.

  42. Meatloaf is IMAO!! Crazy!! Congrats to Mr.Jones.

  43. Stephanie

It goes without saying “Cullen” you are an exceptional talent, very blessed. and although I do not know you personally, I am very proud of you.

One of my biggest hopes is that not only will you inspire more Black (African American) and minorities to swim, but that groups (such as church groups) and organizations will take it upon “themselves” to use you as a role model and encourage swimming lessons among the Black (African-American) and other minority communities. We cannot leave it solely up to you or Anthony Ervin (2000 Olympic 50M freeystlyle swimmer), or any one individual and least of all “wishful thinking”, we must be “PROACTIVE”.

We need to get off our behinds, get out there and encourage this fun, healthy, not to mention life saving activity of swimming as common and in most cases as natural as playing basketball, listening to hip-hop music, getting dressed up to show off (stuntin’) our ‘new” outfit(s), or sitting in front of a computer speculating about how much money you are going to make and what background (ethnicity) your future mate will be from (What does personal preference – no matter what it is – have to do with the costs of tea in China?????.. I could care less and I think that anyone who dwells on this pettiness shows a huge lack of maturity and intelligence ….. your personal life is your own…Thank God for making me Color Blind).
We must put the superficial silly excuses of “messing up the hair by getting it wet” and/or excuse of “that is too much water for me to drink”. These are are old, played out, worn out sorry excuses that shoud have been bagged, tagged, and put on a shelf a long time ago. We need to think about how this activity can improve our health dramatically, how it can save our lives, and how you could easily it could save the life of another if we were placed in that awkward, yet very real situation, (calling 911 from your cell phone is not going to save a drowing victim).
The majority of these blogs are fruitless and non-constructive which obviously and do not help this crisis.

I am the proud Mom of two daughters and a nieice who I made sure took swimming lessons and they all started swimming before elementary school, swam through high school, and college and I am proud to say that whether they are swimming in a local pool, traveling to the ocean, or stroking the waters out of the country they still enjoy swimming as adults. My young ladies could not imagine a vacation without enjoying a relaxing swim in the water. In addition, all three have had the unfortunate circumnstances of having to jump into the water to save a “non-swimmer”.

You are never to oold to learn or too young to start.

    P.S. Excuse my typos

    Steph
