Check out Lynne Whitfield’s performance in the Josephine Baker Story (on DVD or VHS) you’ll be mesmorized by Lynne’s performance. Also read the book, Josephine, a hungry heart by Jean-Claude Baker (he wasn’t actually adopted by her but a really good friend). La Baker had some loot back in the 1920′s and 1930′s, she was one of the highest paid performers in France, well all of Europe. At that time she was the richest black woman in the world. If you have a chance to travel to France, you can visit her chateau called Les Milandes, it’s ridiculous even in today’s standards. This chick had a castle on 600 acres of land and had to issue her own postage stamps. In the book you’ll have a chance to see how this woman surpassed all achievements with regards to black people in entertainment. In the 1930′s can you imagine a black woman with an all-white cast, basically outshining all her counterparts. She was beautiful and the lead role. I remember watching one of the films and couldn’t believe my eyes, you would have never seen a black woman in American studios as a lead role, a respectable role at that! American studios wanted to include her in roles as maids, house keepers, Josephine Baker quoted, “I can’t play those roles, I have my own maids and house keepers.” You can also get her movies from the 1930′s on Netflix: Zou Zou and Princess Tam Tam. Beyonce, thanks for acknowleding La Baker, the world needs to know more about her.

It was really inspiring and made me see how WHACK the United States was back then. She had to get her FAME and respecet overseas, like many other artists after her. I think I’ll get more info from the book you suggested, so maybe I’ll pick that up!

The book is great! Jean Claude did a lot of research, but is kind of flawed too. He highlighted a lot of her bad side as well, but as humans we all have issues. The book has over 500 pages.

65 I think it was Shakira is mixed Lebanese and Columbian. Belly dancing is part of her father’s native culture and thus is hers thats why no one said anything about it. The belly dancing is her trademark and she used the Bollywood theme to give a great stage show.
