JANET JACKSON TALKS WITH BET.COM

Friday, September 22, 2006

janet_bet.jpgHate it or love it, Janet Jackson is a musical icon and her innovation cannot be denied. So, I’m pretty sure all of us are interested in what she has to say about today’s R&B chicks.

Janet, recently sat down with BET.COM’s Kim Osorio, to speak about whether or not she feels like she has influenced the current R&B females out today.

KIM: With all the young R&B females in the game right now, do you see yourself or your influence in any of them?

JANET: You want me to answer that, honestly? Let’s say there are a few artists that I see myself in. It’s nothing bad to me at all. They all mention how I’ve inspired them in one way or another. Imitation is the best form of flattery, as the phrase goes. Everyone gets inspired. So it makes me smile and it’s okay, it really makes me smile. [SOURCE]

I was told, that her first response was sort of sarcastic (i.e. when she asks that rhetorical question) and then she tried to clean it up in the end. Whatever the case, all of those R&B chicks (*cough* Beyonce, Ciara, and them) took a page out of her book.

Janet also talked about J.D. (of course), her new fitness tape, and how many kids she wants.

I love janet and her interviews are better than most I’ve read. I love how she mentions that being in the media is the only thing she knows, so she’s comfortable with it…unlike most people who get fame and don’t know how to deal with it.

I don’t see her as a R&B icon, she needs to know how to sing to earn that. Now she may be the dancing and whispering Icon.

Yeah right Janet. I know what you really wanted to say. LOL! “Some people” need to be more original and be like themselves instead of TRYING to be like Janet. It’s okay to be inspired but to copycat and try to be something you are not is not right.

Shes not only an influence; shes the damn blue-print that most of these chicks out now followed in terms of establishing they’re act. Everyone has borrowed if not stole from Michael and Janet. She definitely deserves the title of Icon.

Janet is real. She taught all those young chicks about performing on stage. Beyonce, Ciara, Aaliyah (R.I.P), J.Lo and Britney. They all took a little something from Miss Jackson. Not a bad thing at all. I cant wait for her cd to drop, im buying a bunch of em. They will make good gifts to my friends.

even if you don’t like janet you gota admit that janet was like the first big black pop/dance star. thats why everyone always compare these girls to janet cause theres noone else to compare them to. Y’all kids might not know and i didn’t know either but back in the day they use to compare janet and anita baker! Could you imagine those are like two artist who are worlds apart… you gotta admit janet did the damn thing for 20 years plus give credit where credit is due

ciara, beyonce aaliyah all bit from janet and her different eras.

Man, Janet Jackson (Ms. Jackson if your Nasty)
IS an Icon…
From Her Very First Video “What have you done for me Lately” to her other classics, Nasty, Rhthym Nation, Control, That’s Allright, Miss You Much, Black Cat, Pressure Principle….

Janet has influenced EVERYONE From Madonna, Beyonce , Ciarra, Whitney, Briteny, J.Lo, man, EVERY MAJOR FEMALE R&B Artist should give a portion of their royalty check to Janet Jackson…

Although she may not be the greatest singer in the world, Janet Jackson IS the GREATEST FEMALE ENTERTAINER OF ALL TIME.

Take an afternoon and check out all of her videos
on youtube….

Here MY all time Favorite

Janet Jackson - All Right

I hope and think ppl have forgiven her for the Nipplegate incident. She might do well with this album. I guess this would be considered her comeback album. It’s hard being original nowadays. It seems like everything has been done. The only thing left to do is roll around the stage like a fool. As far as her having kids she need to hurrah-u aint getting no younger Miss Jackson. Even though u aging good.

#3: Madonna is considered an icon and everyone knows she’s not the best singer. Marilyn Monroe was not the best actress. However icons are people who had a great impact in their time and continue to influence those who come after them, as well as their industry. So by all means: Madonna, Marilyn and yes JANET JACKSON are all icons.

Aaliyah, Ciara, Beyonce (recently at he VMA show), Cassie (she tried to get all Pleasure Principle in the Me&U video)and others. Janet is to the young female R&B girls what Micheal is to Usher, Omarion and them.

Love Janet BUT does this heffa think she’s 20 years old 4real?? She’s talkin bout she’ll have as many kids as JD wants. NEWSFLASH ‘You’re 40 Bitch!’ Why the hell would you wait until you’re 40 to start having kids? If she has a kid now, she’s 50 when his ass is 10. That’s insane! Success is good BUT stop putting your REAL life on hold just to put all of your time and energy into your career. When you finally decide you want to settle down and live normally, you’re old, not married, with no children, and often unhappy b/c you want those things. Millions of dollars can not make up for lost time. (That’s my message to “Ms. Jackson if you’re nasty”)

I’m not a big Janet fan, but I have to give her props for staying in the game for 20+ years!! Not too many artists (male or female) can say that. I doubt if Ciara, Beyonce, Cassie or Ashanti will be around that long. MAYBE Beyonce, but it remains to be seen. Anyway, Janet is doing her thing.

The better question would be who HASN’T she influenced. She is an icon and even those who don’t know it are influenced by her innovation, her openness, her sexuality, sensuality and [of course] the dancing. I don’t care if this cd is crap, I will be buying it just to support this Black woman who has been holding it down for years and years

I’m not a Janet Jackson fan. I don’t think she deserves the term ICON. When I think of a musical ICON
I think of somebody like Mariah Carey,Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, and Patti Labelle. She is very weak vocally. I don’t even understand what she is saying on her news songs. In my opinion an ICON is someone that has a GOD given gift the distinguishes them from the rest. The ladies that I mentioned above all have some different and unique that makes them a true ICON. Let’s be real she was just born in the right family. Ciara,Ashanti, Cassie,Rihanna, and maybe Beyonce. I don’t think they don’t make music that means anything. We will see how long these artists will be around. You can find the average Janet on TV today. But can you say there is someone out there like Mariah,Whitney,or Teena Marie? I think we need more artists like Alicia Keys and John Legend.

She isn’t the best vocalist, but have you ever seen her perform live? That girl can dance her ass off and maintain a strong vocal without breaking a sweat!

Okay! That didn’t make sense! LOL But girl is good at what she does.

In reference to her having babies, I think I read somewhere where she and Jermaine had considered adopting or perhaps they’ll do a surrogate thingy?

I love her. She’s awesome and I just ‘may’ buy this album.

Jan has not only influenced female artists but also male artists, groups, etc. Any video that has dance has been (in part) influence or inspired by Janet. Here are some examples:

Michael-He stepped up his game after the Control and Rhythm Nation albums
Beyonce-Take a look at the “You Want This” video and then look at “Crazy in Love”.
Britney Spears-Check out “If” and then “Slave 4 U”
Ciara (She’s amazing. She’s going to be HUGE)
Cassie
Backstreet Boys
Nsync
Justin Timberlake
JC Chavez
Pussycat Dolls-Again, check out You Want This and then “Buttons”
Jody Watley
Usher

Blah blah blah, JD, blah blah blah, I lost weight, blah blah blah blah blah….

This woman is 40yrs old and has been at the top of her game from the get go. She inspired a generation, comes from on of the craziest families on the planet, had a secret marriage, numerous scandals, has lived though more than a few musical trends and all people wanna ask her about is JD, Beyonce and her weight loss?

I hope her CD does well cause her marketing campaign has given her NO justice!! This woman is 40yrs old and people are interviewing her like she’s Rihanna or something?

That photo is great btw

@ #21J, yes pleasure principle was my jam! I used to dance to the video all the time when I was younger. When I saw the video was coming on, I used to run and get a chair so I can do the “chair thing” at the same time she does it.

Singer or non-singer she is still an icon nonetheless, so stop trying to argue against the fact peoples. Honestly, every artist does not sing the same and should not have to. The Mariah’s and Janet’s are what diversify the industry. Not every one is going to be a vocalist and not everyone is gonna be an entertainer. In Janet’s case she’s an entertainer And undeniably an icon.

I’m sorry but janet IS and icon. Being an icon is not just about have the best voice, it’s about being and innovator and Janet has proven that time and time again the same way Maddona and Michael did although the both are not the best singers either. I love Alicia Keys, she’s one of my favorite artist and I always anticipate her music, but vocally she’s not all there. She has a strong voice, but she has a bad ear, she’s very sharp or often off pitch. Listen to her live versions of “house is not a home” or “if I was your woman” and then listen to luthers and gladys nights (respectively) and you’ll the difference in quality. I think to put her and J. Legend (who’s voice I love, but who’s music is extremely derivative) in that “legend and the making” category and overlook Janets 20+ year history of is crazy. When I saw videos for rythmn nation, vogue and thriller as a kid, I had never seen or heard anything like that before, but I’ve seen and hear a lot like that since. When I heard “falling” I actually wondered if it was a remake it was so derivate.

My Icon’s are the people who either have exceptional talent (Mariah, Whitney, Luther, Lena etc.) or people who had exceptional creativity and innovation (janet, madonna, etc.) or people who are lucky enough to have both (stevie!!!). Just because Janet isn’t a first rate vocalist it doesn’t mean that she is not an Icon. You can go into any church Sunday and find people that can sing circles around all these people, including some of our greats, but there’s a certain “star quality” that makes some one relevant after 20+ years in the business.

Umm in my opinion, Beyonce and Janet are nothing alike. If anybody, Beyonce’s influence is Tina Turner or somebody.

I can understand Ciara, that’s clearly her influence. Both of them dance, dress, lip synch 97%, and have studio voices alike.

But Beyonce…come one now. Everybody grew up listening to Janet, famous or not.

@ 30, Beyonce’…hell yea!!! That gurl jusr BIT Janet’s whole Rhythm Nation video @ her VMA performance, and Janet was probably the 1st black female artists to have background dancers wit chero…something Beyonce does abundantly…Im in agreeance with u as far as B being influenced by Tina, but janet has played a part as well…even she has said it.

I am not the BIGGEST Janet fan but I enjoy her music and she is one of the people I look foward to coming out and especially someone I look foward to going on tour…she’s a HUGE influence and she IS an ICON…NO ONE can take that away from her! And I will be buying 20 Y.O., her new CD, I heard the thing on BET and her album has been gettin surprisingly REALLY good reviews.

Who in the world said her singles are not doing well.
Call On ME was #1 on R&B chart per Billboard Duh. It’s now #2 9/21/06. And that is consider black people charts LOL.
And So Excited featuring Khia is climbing the charts as well. And it’s only been out for two weeks. Go Janet, a true Icon and still doing her thing for twenty years now.

I know Madonna has inspired Britney beyond belief in the overall shock/performance catagory but as in choreography and overall dance execution Janet has def. inspired Britney. Britney has said it in countless interviews how much she has wanted to follow in her footsteps. In certain performances you can tell especially the ones that have choregraphed and/or danced for Janet and then Britney worked them, u can def see the inspiration there.

Ohh and Ciara too, but Ciara to me tries way to hard to and in some performances Ciara doesn’t take her time to execute the moves.

It’s funny how no one like her singles “call on me” is #1 in three different categories. Like dude said above give it time and “so excited” will be up there to. Janet will be on Oprah 09/25/06 yes she will be performing and old song and a new. Janet doesn’t only have a united states fan base, this woman is known all over the world. Janet was the first MTV icon, you all remember the show a couple years back. Hate it or Love it. ICON

Janet Jackson is NOT an icon. She has made great vids great songs however she is not RAW talent. She is famous because of her last name. She was smart and *luckyalilbit* with the decision making (producers, choreographers, and other image makers). She is a direct result of strategic marketing and studio help. She was the first to benefit from marketing and hype thereby opening the doors for the Ashanti’s and Ciara’s. I have enjoyed janet over the years *well VR was the last album i enjoyed fully* but I have to be honest and ask myself how well would she have done it she started from scratch like alot of other artists had to. I don’t think she would have made it to the door of any record company and thats just the simple truth.

49.

Jamila

Monday, September 25, 2006 /

Anybody who says she isn’t an icon needs to look in the damn dictionary. Janet is a phenomenal performer, singer and songwriter regardless of what any of u believe. She paved the way for these other chicks in popular R&B and u can’t prove otherwise. And u can forget that non-singing shit y’all are talking, cuz u are probably the same people turning Cassie, Ciara, Kelis and Rihanna’s shit up on the radio. Everyone doesn’t sound the same. If Billie Holliday came out today y’all would probably be complaining that she couldn’t sing.

She is an icon for the simple fact that she was getting incredible bank, respect, and radio play in a time where her brother, white groups, and punk rock were ruling the charts. While the bar has SIGNIFICANTLY been lowered in the past 5 years, she raised it a great deal and had fans receiving a hell of a lot of entertainment at shows.

And Beyonce was influenced by Janet. While she has a wild spirit a la Tina Turner, Tina was all about rock n’ roll. Beyonce don’t know shit about rock n’ roll. I listen to Tina, Beyonce and Janet and I GUARANTEE u that I can point out more similarities in Beyonce’s and Janet’s CDs than Beyonce’s and Tina’s.
