I used to LOVE Janet, especially in her Rhythm Nation days. I think part of the problem is that her music hasn’t fully matured with her age. That is what makes him overrated. Its perfectly fine to have producers that make your shit sound good. All the preliminary reviews of the album are pretty good, but the one critique I have heard often is that its missing the “pharrell touch”.

I just find it funny how the black community is so up in arms over Janet’s treatment when she never really gave a damn about us before. When she was hot she took all of her big premieres and whatnot right to MTV. Then when it all comes crashing down she tries to come back to the fold just like her brother Michael. Yeah, it sucks that Janet is getting NO MTV love right now (thereby dooming her album to flop), but she made her bed and now it’s time to lie in it. MTV isn’t being racist—heck, the president of the network is black herself, and to still claim that MTV is being racist is to completely ignore all of the positive things (events, programming, advertising for OTHER black artists) MTV has done for the black community. MTV has shown plenty of love to the black community in the past. So let’s move on from this idea. Claiming “racism” is the only thing black people feel they can do nowadays in defense of each other, and that’s just disappointing.

That fact of the matter is that the stunt Justin and Janet pulled not only got MTV fined big time, but it also cost them the Superbowl Half Time Show deal. MTV lost a LOT of money and prestige from that incident, so they were going to be pissed no matter what. Don’t be mad at Justin because he was the SMART one. He knew MTV was pissed and ready to chop off some heads so he did what anybody who was concerned about their career in the long run would have done: he put his tail between his legs, sucked up his pride and apologized.

JANET, on the other hand, not only refused to apologize for the incident, she then went on to attempt to CAPITALIZE off of it (remember her SNL skit that year where she played Condoleezza doing a Nipplegate at a hearing?). To this day she has yet to officially come out and apologize for Nipplegate the same way Justin has. Justin thought about his career in the long run and humbled himself, realizing it’s better to be on MTV’s good side. Janet, on the other hand, attempted to use the incident to forward her then current album and it backfired, big time.

Don’t bite the hand that feeds you, and that’s exactly what she did. If I were MTV Janet would be getting ZERO airtime too. And now she’s in a position where magazines only want her for her weight loss tips, and word on her sex life…and she’s CATERING to that. Nobody’s telling her to do all these magazines.

Sorry man, some of the greatest stars fall off. Take Janet’s brother for instance, Whitney’s struggling, and I know some will say it’s due to a drug problem, but there were dips in her record sales prior to the public knowing about her alleged addiction, hell, even Prince isn’t as relevant as he used to be.

They all have a loyal fan base that will be there, but as far as dropping new music that will go on to sell 10, 15, 20 million copies as they have in the past, that wont happen.

(1) People just don’t buy music like they used to, even the top selling artist aren’t doing Diamond numbers today, the internet will make sure that rarely (if at all) happens again.

(2) Forget the fact that there are only handful artists that can really sing (Janet not being one of them) and/or are good performers (I’m sure the stage show is still dope), but inevitably there comes a time when artist (Most, not all) simply can’t transcend what they’ve achieved in the past. And to be honest I think it’s simply because they aren’t able to adapt to the next genre of music (Today’s sound).

I think artist like Mariah, The Isley’s, Charlie Wilson remain relevant with new music because they aren’t overdoing it while attempting to crossover into the next genre of music. Mariah had her little breakdown (With the Glitter album), but lets be honest, she crossed over to the next genre of music years ago, with the Puffy remixes and collaborations with the likes of Bone Thugs and Harmony and ODB, Mariah saw it coming and made the necessary steps back then, plus she can sang. Ron Isley and Charlie Wilson hooked up with a genius in R. Kelley, who gave us new music with the respective artist old school feel. JD’s good, but he ain’t R. Kelley!
