VIDEO: MOS DEF PERFORMANCE & ARREST AT MTV VMA’S
Friday, September 8, 2006
This is the video of Mos Def performing “illegally” at the VMA’s, before his arrest. I guess the content was a little too risque for MTV so they did something about it. Dang, that’s messed up. But it looks like people really respected what he did.

Mos was Killin em with the realness.
He should have gotten a permit and did the right thing but the popo definitely did this as payback for Kanye. They wasn’t having that again.

I’m proud and happy that Mos Def stood up and recognized that the affects from Katrina are still here! The government acts as if it’s over and only wants to talk about 9/11 (5 years later). We haven’t even recovered from Katrina. Thousands of people are still displaced and would like to go home.
Mos Def is the truth!!

Yes he should have gotten a permit but most of all its about a black man with a voice and talking about somthing that is reaal in our community. But if it was some other black artist doing a improv performance talking about laffy taffy or whatever It wouldve just been funny. That goes to show you that they dont want us to her the real message.

And that was a peaceful protest.
What I don’t understand is how did they get the truck/soundstage all the way hooked up w/o the popo’s interference.
I’m just glad it’s all on tape.
Thank The Almighty for camera phones!

I love Mos Def and everything he stands for.Its refreshing to see a black man with a voice stand up and be heard, and what I like the most is how everybody supported him.We need more Mos Def’s in the world. Its time for us to ome together and stand up for ourselves.I dont give a damn what nobody say,it is no excuse why it took so long for our people to get help, and how hurricanr katrina looks like it just hit yesterday because they still havent rebuilt New Orleans. They are trying to turn peoples land that has been handed down from generation to generations into casinos. We cant let them do that

That’s what’s up! much love and respect to mos def! These people hate to hear the truth! They know the shit they are doing is wrong. I work in the World Financial building right behind where the towers use to be and I look out my window and see this big hole that they are working non stop on but who was working for our people when Katrina hit. No one! It’s not over people are still suffering. This shows how much they hate and despise us. Props to Kanye too! These crackers make me sick!

Mos Def reppin Katrina and us proper. He said later for possible future endorsements like my man AI does…and you see how he is even more respected!
That’s the same courage the real rappers had back in the day…before all the bling bling and butti shaking.

Much love and major respect to Mos for keeping it real and not being afraid to tell the truth. And I am glad to see that people were showing him support - if only there were more people like Mos in the world who wouldnt be afraid to stand up and be heard -
@9: I thought the same thing myself and did a little reasearch - here is MTV’s report on allegedly went down
http://www.mtv.com/news/a..._def.jhtml?headlines=true
I do think the police were excessive and god am I grateful it was caught on tape - but its funny how some can get away with the lack of paperwork… but it helps to not be throwing down anything that ticks off the bureaucrats… Props to Mos and Kanye for showing that even in America we are not always at liberty to speak - and definately when you break it down about the injustices of the powers-that-be…

Dollar Day for New Orleans (Katrina Klap)”
by Mos Def
(Speaks)
This is for the streets, the streets everywhere,
The streets affected by the storm called, America,
I’m doin’ this for ya’ll, as for me, for the Creator,
(Chorus)
God save these streets,
One dollar per every human being,
Feel that Katrina Clap,
See that Katrina Clap,
(Verse I)
Listen homie, It’s dollar day in New Orleans,
It’s where there water everywhere and people dead in the street (eet eets),
And Mr. President he ‘bout that cash,
He got a policy for handlin’ the bruthas and trash,
And if you poor you black,
I laugh a laugh, they won’t give when you ask,
You betta off on crack, dead or in jail, or with a gun in Iraq (a aq),
And it’s as simple as that,
No opinion my man it’s mathematical fact,
Listen, a million poor since 2004,
And they got illions and killions to waste on the War,
And make you question what the taxes is for,
Or the cost to reinforce the broke levee wall,
Tell the boss he shouldn’t be the boss anymore (or or),
Ya’ll bae-li-means (???),
(Chorus)
God save these streets,
One dollar per every human being,
Feel that Katrina Clap,
See that Katrina Clap,
God save these streets,
Quit bein’ cheap brutha freedom ain’t free,
Feel that Katrina Clap,
See that Katrina Clap,
Lord have mercy,
Lord God God save our souls,
A-God save our souls, A-God,
A-God save our souls,
Lord God God save our souls,
A-God save our soul soul soul,
Soul Survivor,
(Verse II)
It’s dollar day in New Orleans,
It’s where water everywhere and baby’s dead in the stree (ee eets),
It’s enough to make you holler out,
Like where the fuck is Sir Bono and his famous friends now,
Don’t get it twisted man I dig U2,
But if you aint about the ghetto, Then Fuck You Too,
Who care bout Rock N’ Roll when babies can’t eat food,
Listen homie that shit ain’t cool,
It’s like dollar day for New Orleans,
It’s where the water everywhere and homies dead in the stree (ee eets),
And Mr. President’s a natural ass,
He out treatin’ bruthas worse than they treat the trash,
(Chorus)
God save these streets,
One dollar per every human being,
Feel that Katrina Clap!
See that Katrina Clap!
God save these streets,
Quit bein’ cheap brutha freedom ain’t free!
Feel that Katrina Clap!
See that Katrina Clap,
Soul Survivor,
Lord God God save our souls,
A-God save our souls, A-God,
A-God save our souls,
Lord God God save our souls,
A-God save our soul A-God A-God save us,
(Verse III)
Lord did not inten (yen-end) for the wicked to rule the world,
Say God could not inten (yen-end) for the wicked the rule the wor (o oorld),
God did not inten (yen-end) for the wicked to rule the world,
And even when they knew it’s a matter of truth, before they wicked ruling is through,
(Chorus)
God save these streets,
A-dollar day for New Orleans,
God save these streets,
Quit bein’ cheap homie freedom ain’t free,
God save these streets,
One dollar per every human being,
Feel that Katrina Clap!
See that Katrina Clap!
God save these streets,
Quit bein’ cheap brutha freedom ain’t free!
Feel that Katrina Clap!(Ha)
Ghetto Katrina Clap!(Ha)
Soul Survivor,
Lord God God save our souls,
A-God save God save our souls,
Feel that Katrina Clap!
Let’s make them dollars stack!
And rebuild these streets,
God save these streets,
God save these streets,
God save the soul,
Feel that Katrina Clap!
See that Katrina Clap!
Soul Survivor,
Don’t talk about it, Be about it, Peace.

I like those lyrics. It’s a damn shame that it’s the truth. Just last night I was telling my bf how I didn’t feel proud about being an American. I’m proud of being Black, but that’s about it. I can’t believe that most of white America does not see the racial factor in how Katrina was handled. It leaves me flabbergasted when people criticize the victims and not the government. Or better yet, when they criticize the journalist who captioned pictures of Black people stealing, but white people trying to survive. Don’t they know that most Black people are struggling to survive on a daily basis?!?
The song kinda reminds me of Marvin:
Rockets, moon shots
Spend it on the have nots
Money, we make it
Fore we see it you take it
Oh, make you wanna holler
The way they do my life
Make me wanna holler
The way they do my life
This ain’t livin’, This ain’t livin’

It amazes me that if a pic. of Beyonce is posted doing nothing 300+ posts will follow.
He is a post about something of real substance and less than 40 posts made so far.
As a people we need to get our priorities in order.
I hope that Mos Def keeps doing his thing. Right now he is one of the only black entertainers willing to tell explore something more than guns, hoes, cars, bling and money.

Nothing but respect fo Mos Def. When I first heard he got arrested I thought it was kinda funny thinking why would Dante get arrested then I find out he bag fighting for the cause and my repect just doubled. He is slowy getting more popular in bigger movies and on a Major label but other folks I respect like Ice Cube that once they went Hollywood kinda fell back on the message.
And you know if he tried to get a permit he wasn’t getting one for that on that night in front of the VMA’s so either it doesn’t matter I can’t believe this did even register in the mainstream media yet so far this morning I’ve heard all about 50cent driving his Lambo and getting arrested for Traffic violations all over MSNBC and CNN.
Amerikkka hates the truth. Preach on Mos.

Ayo i thought shit was dope, i’m all for fighting the power, but u all need to look at it from another angle. Look George Bush does not care about black folks, but y should he. He is the president of America, and as we know it has not been in this country’s interests to care about black folks. Shit if this happened 40+ years ago white folks would be having a party in church thanking God that a natural disaster aided in wat they prayed for, a demise of the black race in America. Stop protesting and asking for money cuz no one cares, the only ppl that will help us is ourselves. I feel for the black ppl that went through this, i do, but stop acting like things changed and we are equal. If u really want to piss America off, black leaders should ask other countries for aide, like for example Cuba, oh the government would hate that shit. U have to understand black ppl, ur Vote means nothing, yes i said it. I understand ppl died for this right, but unfortunately it don’t mean shit. the reason is because elected officials don’t run the country, the contributors do. Okay so wat about the black folks in office… c’mon thats for show, to give an impression that shit done changed, they can’t really do a damn thing. The real ppl with power don’t need to run for office, all u need is a mouthpiece, a shit load of money, and a legacy of connections to get ur agenda passed. Democrates and Republicans are the same ppl, once again an illusion. Think ppl, hey if i was a Rockafeller or of a similar family and evil wit power thats how i would do it, shit i damn near have my hand in all this countries financial empires anyway. Then should we vote, hell it doesn’t matter, the guy that is suppose to win, will win. Don’t act like this don’t make sense, shit look at Bush, did u know his grandfather funded the Nazi party and his father, fuck, wat didn’t he do, but hey when u know the right ppl. All of this is documented, but they own the media so we get wat we are suppose to get. Think folks.
