Some of you might not know this, but The Pussycat Dolls were not the first to record the smash single, “Don’tcha.” An Atlanta-based performer and make-up artist, Tori Alamaze, who can be seen and heard singing background for Andre 3000 of OutKast on his smash hit, “Hey Ya” did. Cee-Lo Green wrote and produced the song. The song never quite jumped off and Tori’s album was shelved but when Interscope finally decided to release the Dolls as a full act, they contacted Cee-Lo about re-recording the song, and Cee-Lo wanted to create a strong relationship with the label. So I guess you guys know my next question. Who sang it better?

Yeah I’m in Alabama and they played the hell out of Tori’s song, even had her perform at one of the clubs, I hated the song then and I hate it now, I just can’t get into it. PCD wouldn’t be nothing without Nicole, and she is not all that.

I heard the Tori version like 2 years ago and still love it. It makes me so sad that trash like PCD makes so much $ and gets an MTV award, and TORI got shelved? Life is not fair.
I’ve always liked Tori’s version. Mainly because that was the first version I ever heard. We used to play it on our radio at the Hat Shack when I worked there.
Just as an additional note, I feel if you’re going to remake a song, you should switch it up a bit. Don’t just do the exact same song.
ps. I just read 12 & 13′s comments. I also stay in Alabama. So maybe it was a song we played locally here. Cause I used to hear the Tori Alamaze’s version all the time.

For those who don’t know, the PCD are salaried employees of Interscope records. They approached Robin Antin about making a music group out of her successful dance troupe.
Robin agreed. And they also contracted Nicole to be the lead singer while everyone else is apart of the “package”.
They are eye candy with strong background in dance. Only 2 other PCD chicks can actually sing. The red head and the brown skinned girl.
The main reason they did it this way is so that if the group tanked, there was no contracts to worry about, they would just fire them.
A member acts up, she gets fired. And a new one is hired in her place.
And if their 15 minutes ended abruptly, they all could get canned.
It’s less messy this way.
And I swear this is how Danity Kane is too. I feel like Making The Band was full of ringers who made the band in the end.
She still sounds fake.

If Tori had more background vocals, it would definitely be her. It sounds more raw with her.
There is no doubt that Tori was shafted by the label and the producer has done well for himself out the debacle… and he produced BOTH acts so its up to him really to raise the bar when re-doing his own song…
As to the question at hand:
Tori Alamaze sounds like the Karaoke version of PCD…and that’s not saying much for PCD either. Its clear listening to the Tori track that the only real difference between the two versions is who is singing lead. Her version was a guide vocal for Nicole for sure…
I prefer the PSD version, not feeling the other one.
PCD. I used to hear that version by thsi Tori chick and it sucked ass. The song sounded sleazy.
U can hear a slight difference in the vocals but overall they both sound the same 2 me

tori’s version has more soul. the pcd sounds like cheap pop music. i knew something was up because i first heard tori’s version and thought she had a good funky sound and then when the pcd came out with it it sounded watered down.

Clearly Tori’s version is better. The song was orignally written by Cee-Lo for a Black woman to sing. It’s really a black woman song. 33 was right. Tori’s vocals were the blueprint for Nicole to follow. Nicole is trying to sing it like Tori. THAT’S WHY THE TWO VERSIONS SOUND ALIKE!!!!!!
I’m not gonna hate, the PCD’s version is cool, but when you know that Tori originally did it and got shited on by the record company…..come on!!!! i actually like pcd better or should i say (nicole) since she is the only one who can really sing in the group. the other girls are there just for eye candy. nicole sounds more polished. tori sound is not bad it just sounds a little unclean. other than that they both sound the same.

Like some others on the board I’m from Alabama, but now i live in Philly. I was listening to a pop station and “Don’t Cha” came on. I immediately recognized Cee-Lo’s voice in the background and I thought that the song had a gritty, Dirty South feel to it (especially the background vocals). I didn’t know the chick singing it. I just knew that it was hot. That song was Tori’s version. That’s the version in the Heikien commerical.
Since Nicole copied Miss Tori’s vocals precisely, there’s really no difference in the actual song. The thing that messed up the PCD’s version was Busta’s 8 bars. This is a perfect example of a song not needing a rap verse. Besides I liked Tori’s old school “rap a taste” version better.
When I said Dirty South I meant the original Dirty South sound. I’m thinking Al Green, Ann Peebles, Denise Lasalle, Millie jackson and Johnnie Taylor.
TORI. I remember when they started playing ‘dont cha on the radio out here sometime last year, it was the Tori version and I liked it. But then next thing you know i’m hearing the song later on and seeing the video and i’m askin people like damn ain’t it somethin different about the song? I couldn’t believe the hoes I was seein on tv actually sang the version I liked, but it wasnt til months later I found out what shady shit went down. I think PCD is a joke and a damn gimmick I was hoping they would go the hell away after they sad attempt @ Tori’s song but they didn’t. They suck.
