Akon recently sat down with Angie Martinez of Hot 97 and talked about growing up in a household that practiced polygamy. He said his father had about 4 wives, and he knew them all as his mom. According to him, ALL Africans believe in polygamy. I know Bouga is going to have something to say about that!
According to VIBE CONFIDENTIAL, Akon also admitted that he was running his own ‘multi-monogamous’ household down in the Atlanta. But I guess they snipped out that part in the interview I listened to, because I didn’t hear him say that.

I’m nigerian and my father, nor my granfather or uncles practice polygamy it is wrong considering, I live in a family of christian beliefs. Akon’s statement baffles me and now all the ignorant “BLACK” Americans and AMericans in general are going to think its a norm for the whole African continent. And yes in some cases people in Africa do practice polygamy, just like in Utah the mormons practice polygamy but that does not mean the whole united states, just because it’s legal in Utah!!!!
I’m disgusted with these stereotypes.
I suppose it depends on your views on commitment, and marriage. I know that when I stood at the altar with my husband only four months ago that no one else will replace him in any respect whether it be sexually, spiritually, mentally any way. We jumped over that broom and and vowed that our new life with each other and our soon to be created children are all we need in our lives now. Not lying and cheating and drama, and pain, heartbreak. We left it behind in our old lives. However alot of people don’t feel that way so even though I don’t agree with Akons comments to each his own I guess do what you do to make you happy.

i was born and raised in North America, and it kills me to see how some people just stereotype africans. Some black north americans have terrible perspectives when it comes to their roots and africa. I mean when it all comes down to it, if you’re black and you have lost you’re roots, you know where you’re from…there’s no way around it.

My partner is such a fan of AKON that I gave him his cd for a birthday present – on top of that I downloaded his ringtone just to support the “AKON CAUSE” together with honey whenever he called.
After reading this comment, I’ve deleted the ringtone immediately.
I have no doubt that Akon is intelligent enough to know that this “practice” is no longer in most of our African countries… it’s ancient history and we’re pretty much raising our families with only one mom and one dad!
Perhaps I should also make the cd disappear misteriously… this whole thing just put me totally offfffffffffffffffffffffff!!

Meatloaf…..I have been busy, but I did contribute to the post earlier…check number 2 and 4.
Anyway, I can speak for South Africa. I know polygamy is practised here, but not by everybody, only those that can afford it and also who feel strongly about their tradition. It is practised mostly by very traditional people, especially Zulus (and I am a zulu). Like I said, my father had two wives, but he passed away before he could get married to my mother. The lobola (dowry) and everything was settled….only the wedding date was to be set. His brother was married to 4 wives, but one of them passed away about a year ago. The way he treats and takes care of his wives is the same way any husband will treat and care for their wife. What I admire about him is that he is able to control and manage the household…..all the wives get along very well with each other. It takes a very strong man to have successful polygamous relationships/marriages.
There was a post earlier about today’s women not willing to share their man. That person was right to an extent….but you also find woman today who are willing to partake in such relationships, especially in the rural areas. Being in the rural areas also doesn’t mean thos people are not educated, there are those that are educated and are still willing to share a husband. Like I said, if you feel strongly about it and can afford it, there is nothing stopping you.
I hope this sheds some light to my African American brothers and sisters about this issue.

Being from Senegal myself, i can tell ya’ll for a fact that what Akon said is not true, everyone in Africa does that believe in Polygamy. I think i speak for a lot of africans when i say that we’ve been proud of Akon ever since he got on, and now we feel like he let us down. Just like someone said earlier in her comment, Akon has the opportunity to educate people about Africa and its different cultures, but instead he choose to reinforce negative stereotypes.
Because of this dude, i have every girl i’ve dated telling me that they are happy the relationship ended because apparently i was going to get with more women sooner or later because Akon said so..
I think dude should get on TV or Radio and apologize and take that BS back!!

When I was in college back in ’82 – ’84 I had a girl for each day of the week, ended up having several rotations over a 9 month period… Once one found out about the other I had to bust it up and start all over again (That’s when I learned that when you give a woman “The Good Dick” they can’t seem to hold water, They can’t wait to go tell everybody !!!)
