It’s certainly not true that all Africans believe in Polygamy. Just because he grew up in such a household does’nt mean that everyone is living that way. In most parts of Africa polygamy is none existent and prohibited. He should get his facts staight before he starts talking s%#&!

Some of the reasons why it’s on the decline is because the shifting economy and the changing roles of women. Even when certain groups want to practice polygamy they find can’t afford it. Plus women weren’t allowed to get educations or work outside of the family. More and more women have to work in order to support their families and women are getting more opportunities to go to school, thus decreasing their need to find a husband to support them.

As for his situation in the ATL, more power to him - he can afford it! Most dudes now a days complain that you’re a goldigger if you ask them to take you out to eat let alone support more than one famiily. Can you imagine the health insurance alone would be bananas.

Me personally I could never share someone I truly love, I’d want to give 100% and would need to receive 100%. But I guess there are some chicks who can live with it and aparently Akon found ‘em,

I have been dealing with a guy who is African for about three years. I have been around his friends who are also African. Even though they are not marry to all of these females, it seems like they all have a wife but also have their girlfriends on the side and the wives know about these females. you might as well say they are practicing polygamy in their own way. I listened to the miss Info interview over the weekend and he NEVER said ALL AFRICANS practice polygamy….HE NEVER SAID THAT.

Whether its because of his culture or religion I don’t have a problem with him having more than one wife. My dad practice “polygny” and he has two wives. We all grew up together, and respect each other. I really don’t have a problem with it if it’s done right. I also don’t see what the big deal is, because most of my America uncles are married and have girlfriends on the side or had one or two or sometimes three and all of the girlfriends knew they were married.

Alot of women want to pretend they can’t take polygny, but after finding their husbands cheating they don’t leave them. We call that polygny without responsiblity.

Also, we find the societies in Africa that practice “polygny” and not “polygamy” have the lowest Aids rate. They did a study and found that most men here in the United States like 90% if they could get away with being a polygynist would marry more then two wives. Oh! life in the West…it’s more to it then meets the eye. This explains the affairs, the growing sexual transmitted diseases.

I’m from Senegal where polygny is the norm, and Senegal just happens to be a country where Aids is relatively unheard of. They did a PBS special about it.

I have dated several men that are African and none of them believed that. I guess different strokes for different folks, but he shouldn’t say ALL AFRICANS believe something.

I agree that some people are jumping to conclusions, and saying that they’ll stop supporting him is a bit harsh. And Bonifant is right. He never said all Africans PRACTICE polygamy. He made a sweeping generalization and that was dumb as hell on his part. But people have to look at the source. Akon is not a scholar and he said nothing less ignorant than 99% of the rappers out there say on 99% of their records. Even Cam’ron, Dame Dash and I believe Jim Jones went on national TV (Bill O’Reilly Factor) and was talking about how all blacks do this and that and how all whites are such and such. (This was some time last year).

Anyway, my point is that we are quick to condemn artists for saying dumb things in an interview but then we’ll be in the club shaking our asses to “Get Low” from the Ying Yang Twins. Although Akon’s statements are just as offensive, he is speaking from his individual experience. Like someone else said, Akon can’t possibly speak for every African because he’s not every African. Questions, does anyone here watch “Big Love” besides me? When I saw this post that’s what I immediately thought of.

I don’t think I can personally share my man with one woman let alone 3 or 4, but I don’t know if it’s really my place to judge other’s who can? I do believe homosexuals should be allowed to marry each other so why then should polygamist not be allowed to do their thing as well? I think people in general overestimate the intention of marriage. “Marrying for love” is a relatively new concept in the history of the world and for some people that idea is still a novelty whether that be here in America or in Senegal or wherever. Marriage is a social construct, it’s a legal arrangement and for every culture that arrangement means something different whether that be having a vehicle for creating a family, building wealth etc.

At the end of the day Akon is just a celeb and not the spokesperson for the entire African continent. I think his quote did exactly what he wanted it to…people are talking about him.

Polygamy did exist in Africa. My family is African and I heard stories all the time from my Uncles about them have three and four mothers. They said that its VERY rare now, but it did exist. I was told that a child looked at all of this fathers wives as his mother. All children were treated the same by all wives. A big deal was never made about cheating or jealousy because all wives knew each other.

I am from Sierra Leone and I have many friends from other countries in Africa such as Nigera, Libera, Ghana, Guinea and none of them pratice pologamy. To say that pologamy does not exist in africa will be very inccorect because it does but it is only among muslims. In the “Koran” it says that you can have three wives but you have to treat all them equally. Many people do not pratice this but few in the islam do. I am muslim and my parents and my family don’t pratice pologamy. My boyfriend is muslim and is from sengal like akon and his family don’t pratice pologamy. Akon is very ignorant for saying such rubbish, he needs to spread knowledge. He needs to get civilized. Saying that all of africa pratice pologamy is crazy. Africa is a continent, a huge contient. My parents are from Nigeria and I know my mom had two mothers. It was never really clear to me, and it still isn’t clear now to this day. You have to think how society is now and the way the media plays out the stereotypical African. THAT’S WHY IT WON’T WORK FOR ME. I HAVE MY OWN DEGREE/JOB. (AND THIS IS ALSO WHY POLYGAMY IS NOT AS POPULAR WITH THE MORE RECENT GENERATIONS OF AFRICANS. THEY HAVE MORE CHOICES.)

SO LET ME END BY ASKING YOU THIS, IS THE PLAYING FIELD REALLY EQUAL FOR MEN AND WOMEN IN WESTERN SOCIETY? DO WE REALLY HAVE THE SAME OPPORTUNITIES TO PROVIDE FOR OURSELVES THAT MEN DO? HOW DOES OUR SOCIETY PROTECT DEFENSELESS WOMEN FROM THE STUPIDITY AND SELFISHNESS OF MEN?

I’m nigerian and my father, nor my granfather or uncles practice polygamy it is wrong considering, I live in a family of christian beliefs. Akon’s statement baffles me and now all the ignorant “BLACK” Americans and AMericans in general are going to think its a norm for the whole African continent. And yes in some cases people in Africa do practice polygamy, just like in Utah the mormons practice polygamy but that does not mean the whole united states, just because it’s legal in Utah!!!!

I suppose it depends on your views on commitment, and marriage. I know that when I stood at the altar with my husband only four months ago that no one else will replace him in any respect whether it be sexually, spiritually, mentally any way. We jumped over that broom and and vowed that our new life with each other and our soon to be created children are all we need in our lives now. Not lying and cheating and drama, and pain, heartbreak. We left it behind in our old lives. However alot of people don’t feel that way so even though I don’t agree with Akons comments to each his own I guess do what you do to make you happy.

Meatloaf…..I have been busy, but I did contribute to the post earlier…check number 2 and 4.

Anyway, I can speak for South Africa. I know polygamy is practised here, but not by everybody, only those that can afford it and also who feel strongly about their tradition. It is practised mostly by very traditional people, especially Zulus (and I am a zulu). Like I said, my father had two wives, but he passed away before he could get married to my mother. The lobola (dowry) and everything was settled….only the wedding date was to be set. His brother was married to 4 wives, but one of them passed away about a year ago. The way he treats and takes care of his wives is the same way any husband will treat and care for their wife. What I admire about him is that he is able to control and manage the household…..all the wives get along very well with each other. It takes a very strong man to have successful polygamous relationships/marriages.

There was a post earlier about today’s women not willing to share their man. That person was right to an extent….but you also find woman today who are willing to partake in such relationships, especially in the rural areas. Being in the rural areas also doesn’t mean thos people are not educated, there are those that are educated and are still willing to share a husband. Like I said, if you feel strongly about it and can afford it, there is nothing stopping you.

I hope this sheds some light to my African American brothers and sisters about this issue.

Being from Senegal myself, i can tell ya’ll for a fact that what Akon said is not true, everyone in Africa does that believe in Polygamy. I think i speak for a lot of africans when i say that we’ve been proud of Akon ever since he got on, and now we feel like he let us down. Just like someone said earlier in her comment, Akon has the opportunity to educate people about Africa and its different cultures, but instead he choose to reinforce negative stereotypes.
