ANGELINA JOLIE AS MARIANE PEARL
Tuesday, October 10, 2006
Above is the first picture of Angelina Jolie as Mariane Pearl, the widow of Daniel Pearl. Daniel was kidnapped and murdered in Pakistan while doing an article for The Wall Street Journal. The film is being shot in India and is titled A Mighty Heart.
A lot of people e-mailed me (Jaycen in particular), saying how outraged they were that Angelina is playing a woman of Afro-Cuban and Dutch descent. In some extreme cases, people have said this is a form of modern day blackface. I don’t know if I would go that far, but… How do you feel about Angelina playing this part?

I’m not really feeling the whole idea but to each its own….I feel like they could’ve put a little more effort into finding someone who better fit the part.

At first it does seem a bit odd, because I am sure there are women of African American or Afro-Cuban descent who could play that role but I would not say this is modern day black-face. If it were some blond-hair, blue-eyed non-talented actress, I would really have a problem. However, I do think Angelina is a great actress and as a matter of fact Mariane Pearl wanted Angelina to portray her in the film. So shouldn’t her wishes be respected?

Even though the first pic is from a distance it looks like Angelina is pulling it off. Maybe they want the movie to be huge, and get a lot of attention, so that’s why they are using Angelina, to pull in crowds. What black actresses would you all suggest?

Well. Angelina Jolie SHOULD have earned her honorary pass in the Black Community by now….
Let us ask ourselves this question:
WHO would YOU have in the BLACK COMMUNITY play this role.
I SICK of seeing Halle Berry.
What HIGH YELLOW Black Women would be able to handle this particular role? I’m thinking Vanessa Williams (Miss USA), or Nicole Ari Parker

I don’t have a problem with it.
If anybody knows anything about African heritage. All Africans are not “black”. There are three groups of Africans that I know of so far. I’m sure there are more.
They are the Africans(sp)(pronounced AF RI CANS), Afrikhans(sp)(pronounced AF RI KHAANS) and the Coloreds (mixed with the Europeans, Dutch and Spanish decent and they live in Northern Africa).
I guessing that Mrs. Pearl is colored. And who to play a better part than Angelina. Hell I don’t know what creed or pedigree she is from.

I don’t see what the big deal is. Angelina looks like Mariane in that picture and she’s a great actress.
Mariane Pearl is bi-racial so it doesn’t make a difference if a black, white, or mixed woman plays the role.
I love my people but we are a little too sensitive.

I believe Halle is playing a white woman in a biopic. Although Halle may be half white, she’s further from the woman’s complexion than Angelina is from Marianne Pearl’s. I don’t hear white people complaining about that. Furthermore, and most importantly, I don’t hear either woman bitching about the actress that will be representing them on screen.

I kinda have mixed feelings about it too…
The film is being produced by Brad Pitt’s production company…when he was married to Jennifer Aniston, SHE was orignally gonna portray Mariane Pearl…could you picture that? However, when they got divorced, the role was then offered to Angelina Jolie…
From far away, she does resemble her in the first pic though.

Please people get a life. The only other “black”person that the directors would cast is Halle Berry. Sure there’s something awkward about it but not enough to loose sleep over it. Halle is playing the part of a white female politician and everybody applauded it—-MOVE ON!!

IF Alicia Keys could act, maybe….
The PRODUCER’s of this movie are probably spending a LOT of money, so they want to get Hugh Returns…
I’m sure it was purely a business decision in choosing Angelina Jolie…
An earlier poster (keke) stated that this was the ideal of Marianne Pearl to choose Angelina Jolie, so I’m cool with their choice !

Halle Berry is good, but she is so overworked…

“WHAT HIGH YELLOW ACTRESS”???? ANy BLack actress could have played that part. THEY GAVE IT TO A WHITE WOMAN SO WHY WOULD A BLACK ACTRESS HAVE TO BE HIGH YELLOW.

i’m soo glad to see all these posts. We need to be more open minded as a people and stop looking for things to throw the race card at. We have enough REAL problems in our community to deal with, without worrying about this. I say, if she does a convincing job, then so be it. It’s not like she’s playing Sojourner Truth or something. Besides, Angelina has a little black child of her own and perhaps she’d like to do a movie that can, even the slightest, relate to Zahara. I think the focus is more on the message of the movie and less on the “hey look it’s Angelina playing a 1/16th black woman.”
Even Survivor turned out to be less controversal than we’d all imagined it would be. Maybe this is a positive indication that race if FINALLY becoming less of a factor in the big picture. Baby steps, but steps non the less.

“this is a form of modern day blackface”….No…..
I don’t think that is the case here.
I doubt she sees herself in terms of color so having
Angelina Jolie (Ms We are the World Herself)play her life actually seems to be a perfect choice.
Had she identified herself more as a woman of african decent, then I would have been highly offended. But since she did not, I am not.
Look for this to come up again with Tiger Woods and Mariah Carey. lol

PASSES!!!!!!
They dont give us a pass. Our culture is so tainted and we as a people are not evenmas close as other cultures. Most likely because we ARE SO WILLING TO LET OTHER IN.
SO ANGELINA ADOPTED AN AFRICAN BABY…..that does not give her a pass. 5 years ago when she was married to Billy Bob and had viles of blood around her neck..we wouldnt even be having this conversation….
A white woman can play the role, but a black woman would have to be high yellow…yall killing me.
And yes I do believe the woman did want Angelina playing her, honestly I dont know if she even has any respect for her African heritage…she seemed whitewashed in interviews. She did one in O magazine years back

I think that’s real fucked up to have a white actress in this role. Just like it was fucked up to get Elizabeth Taylor to play Cleopatra. I honestly think if the real Mariane wanted a white woman to portray her, then she has some serious issues herself. Angelina looks white, Mariane Pearl does not. It looks like make-up was used to make Angelina look darker, making this modern day black face. How many black actresses are portraying white women? Y’all say some of us are too sensitive. Well, some of us are also too damn passive. And while you’re naming actresses that could have played this role, what about Karyn Parsons (Hillary, FP of Bel Air). Afro-Cuban Definition
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term Afro-Cuban refers to Cubans of African ancestry, and to historical or cultural elements in Cuba thought to emanate from this community. The term can refer to the combining of African and other cultural elements found in Cuban society such as religion, music, language, the arts, and class culture.[1]

Should white people be offended that Halle Berry is playing a white lady in an upcoming movie…
*Halle Berry’s next movie role will center on the true story of Tierney Cahill, a teacher from Reno, Nev. who accepted a challenge from her sixth grade class to run for Congress in 2000.
The actress will portray Cahill in the DreamWorks drama, titled “Class Act.” The filmmakers have taken a rare turn in casting an African American actress to portray a woman who is white in real life. Sources close to the production tell Variety that it was more important to find the right actress for the role rather than the right white actress.
In 2000, Cahill decided to grant the wishes of her students and run for Congress on the condition that they would help with her campaign. The single mother ultimately lost her bid to an incumbent, but she ended up winning 35% of the popular vote.
DreamWorks recently acquired “Class Act” in turnaround from Revolution Studios with the goal of putting it into production in May or June.
In the meantime, Berry is currently filming the DreamWorks drama “Things We Lost In the Fire,” and will next be seen in the adult thriller “Perfect Stranger,” due in theaters May 2007 from Sony.

The movie is being produced by Brad Pitt….its only natural that he would want his woman playing the lead role (keeps money in the family), the studios are going to want a big name to bring in dollars. At the end of the day its all about money and lets face it only white folks are going to pay to see this movie. I’m sure there are quite a few black actresses (my fave is thandie newton or Sophie Okonedo) that could have portrayed Mrs. Pearl but hey…..One other thing, ask yourself this question, for all the outrage and what not how many of you are actually going to see this movie? How many people from the black community went out and paid money to see Hotel Rwanda (which was a beautifully acted, all black casted movie)? Hollywood goes where the money is folks.
