CLAUDIA JORDAN COVERS SMOOTH MAG

Claudia Jordan, one of the most visible briefcase models from NBC’s Deal or No Deal, is featured on the cover of SMOOTH magazine’s Hot 100 issue. In the cover story written by journalist Jawn Murray, Jordan—who currently dates Olympic track star Maurice Green and is also a former Barker Beauty from The Price Is Right—talks about the double standards in Hollywood as it pertains to black talent versus white talent.

I hear you hate when people reference you as a “video girl?”
CJ: It does because its with the negative connotation that comes with being a video girl. I was talking to my friends about this and it’s not mainstream Hollywood where a Black girl can come on the scene and get a Disney show or a movie deal. They’re more willing to make White [people] celebrities out the gate. For us, we have to do stuff like that [being in videos]. That’s not always a bad thing. People have to remember that there are nice videos and there are stank ones, just like nice film projects and crappie ones. I think they’re okay when it comes to starting in the business and you can be selective and do stuff that’s nice. I think that when people classify anyone who has been in a video as a video hoe, it’s ridiculous.

Do you think there’s a double standard when it comes to classifying Black celebrities and White celebrities in the same vein for their sexiness? Like people revere Carmen Elektra and Pamela Anderson, but in the same breath look down on folks like Traci Bingham.
CJ: Right! It’s not right. It’s such a double standard and the unfortunate part about it is that we, as Black people, are doing it ourselves. That’s what frustrates me because I get a lot of emails from girls that want to start off and I can’t tell them to just show up for an audition for this movie. Sometimes in Black Hollywood it seems that you got to get a little buzz on the more urban level and wait until you get a little visible and then you get a shot. The same folks have to work a long time in Black Hollywood before they start getting considered for the bigger parts so the videos are easier to get in the beginning. I think years ago, videos were a lot nicer, a lot fairer towards women.

  1. I respect Claudia for working hard and trying to get her name out there. I don’t know her to be calling her a video ho and everything. However, what she says and what she is doing is hypocritical. She looks like a straight up “video girl” in these pics and that’s sad because she sounds intelligent. It’s not the path I would take to fame and fortune, but I guess for some people, it’s the easy way up, and hell, she’s got the face and body for it so I ain’t hatin. =)

LIZZ I think it is the magazine more than the pics. You google her and you will see hundreds of pics of her in similar clothing, but they are at the beach, in a studio, etc.
I hear all of you talking, but it is good to be reminded sometimes that you cannot judge a book by its cover.
    So be it

  3. that’s my point, if people judge books by their covers, why would you want to pose on the cover of these types of magazines, and then tell people that yo don’t wanna be known as a “video ho”? i know she means well, but it just sounds fishy to me.

besides, how many people really take the time out of their day to google a model off of the cover of smooth, honey, maxim whatever unless they looking for more sexy pictures lol i did google her life story, and some of it is impressive…but other people may not do that, and just judge her posing half naked. i’m just saying maybe posing for a men’s magazine and talking all that talk isn’t the wisest idea.

What the fuck you talking about Nonya, im here trying to bring some awareness about a crisis, and ur ignant ass gotta respond, bet you don’t even know shit about Darfur. We might not be 100% African anymore, but damn we still black, and just because some folk come from Africa and turn coon, don’t mean we should turn our back on actual suffering. Anyway the situation is real crazy over there and i saw some white kids talking about dat shit when i was in D.C and i got angered that white folk protesting and we ain’t doing much, dats it.

There is so much more to Black women than this. Trust, I aint callin a sista out. Yea she look good. But dont call out the industry-the entertainment industry at that. Call out the entire system. Yea I did say “system”. Too many brothers out here aint got jobs an’ locked up an’ shit. Represent in a real way. Speak on real shit. This chick showin her ass and gettin money behind it. She doin what the man wants her to. You a commodity right now, sis. Cover a magazine fully clothed, then talk about shit. It’s annoying. Y’all sistas want respect, but peel yo clothes off in front of the camera like its nothing. Bring Lauryn back. Enough of these ripe hoes with nothing to say. Bring Lauryn back, then y’all gets respect.

Anyways I just hate how when white women do things it’s consider art ie. posing on the cover of a magazine in a bikini but when another race does it it’s a negative thing.

Awwww. Some of the comments about me almost made me sad if I didn’t know any better. Well… if you see my spread in the magazine… you will see there were no “ass tooted in the air shots”… I do not do them EVER. Matter fact that is the first thing I told me publicist when she approaced me about doing the cover of Smooth. I come from a pageant background, and my mother was hella strict…and why the hell would I want to do that anyways??? And I wasn’t talking about myself being called a “video hoe” cause up until this thread… I have never been called that. I was actually defending others. But whatever. You GOT TO READ the entire piece and quit judging others while you hide behind a screen name. One thing that has always made feel good about my limited “video experie nce” was that I always played the lead…didnt dance and was always approaced by teenage girls telling me that they like that I have NEVER played myself out in any of the videos I have done and I have always managed to play classy roles. I have worked my ass off for everything I got. In college as a journalism major, as a dj for my station, as a reporter for the only black newspaper in my state. As an all-american in Track and field…and now as a homeowner 3 times over.I have worked hard and taken NO SHORT CUTS. I am one of the most conservative women you will ever see in Smooth. The shots were tasteful and classy and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Now I am not being a hypocrite…I realize I do what I do. I am a model…and when I am MODELING I know what I am being hired for…it’s one dimensional…it’s Just for looks. And that is why I seek other work to fulfil me somewhat. I work as a reporter, a host. I have hosted the weekend show for Extra, been a corespondent for the Best Damn Sports show, and produced a show that grants wishes to sick kids as well as a fantasy football show for ESPN. Videos were one small percentage of all the things I have done. But for some silly reason…that is what is being talked about so passionately. I don’t want to run down my resume… cause beleive it or not… it’s kind of long and I am not trying to Big time or anthing like that. But these types of mean and hateful comments were exactly the hell what I was talking about. HOW WE DO THIS NEGATIVE SHIT TO OURSELVES! A white woman does whatever…and we support…and some of us jock it. But lil ole me poses in a CONSERVATIVE FULL BOTTOM SWIMSUIT and I am accused of acting like a hoe? Ok whatever… I feel pitty for those who aren’t enlighted enough to see past their dark lil worlds. And to those that defended me and resisted the urge to be TYPICAL and hate… well I appreciate you. I really do. It does mean a lot to me. I would love to see more people be open minded, accepting and not so one dimensional and quick to throw salt…and it warms my heart to see a few on this particular board that I stumbled across. Either way… hey I am used to taking the good with the bad. I haven’t been in the game 12 years for nothing! I am totally prepared to take the good with the bad
    Peace….and hopefully one day unity!
