ISAIAH WASHINGTON: DUBBED AS ‘ANGRY BLACK MAN’ BY THE MEDIA?

is.jpg I wasn’t even going to make a post about this, but someone needs to call out all these blogs and message boards for jumping on Isaiah Washington without having any credible facts or sources.

A couple weeks ago, Isaiah Washington and Patrick Dempsey – both stars of Grey’s Anatomy, got into a little scuffle while filming a scene for the hit show. Supposedly, Isaiah threw Patrick against the wall with his hands around his neck, spewing derogatory words at him. And I quote:

“I’m not your little faggot like [name redacted],” referring to a fellow cast member.

That cast member was T.R. Knight, who recently “came out” to the media. No official reports have come out saying that Isaiah actually said that..

Oh and don’t forget, Patrick was an innocent bystander, who didn’t do anything to provoke him. This is me rolling my eyes.

Now, TMZ is claiming this isn’t the first time Isaiah has been a “terror” on the set. They claim to have sources from other television and movie sets that say he has always caused drama.

One “source” is saying that on the set of Soul Food (2000):

Washington and an actress, who played his wife, were shooting a scene in which Isaiah was supposed to give the woman a superficial kiss. We’re told to the horror of everyone, Washington grabbed the woman and planted a “forceful, aggressive kiss.”

The actress became irate, which then infuriated Washington who began screaming at her. At that point the director stepped in to correct Washington, and the actor went off on him. Executive Producer Tracey Edmonds then took over and Washington went off on her.

I’m guessing they are saying that woman was Nicole Ari Parker, because he played Miles (her husband) on the first season of the show.

Did you catch how they used terms like “forceful,” “terror,” and “horror” to desribe his behavior? Yeah I caught that shit TMZ, yall ain’t slick.

They also claim to have another source from some old movie set, saying he has anger management problems. Yes, of course every black man can’t control their anger. That was me being sarcastic.

All I know is that until I read an official report about this whole Grey’s Anatomy incident, I’m not believing anything. It’s easy to blame the black person when drama goes down, but now they are making him out to be some sort of crazy mad man? Please! I heard some rumors about Patrick Dempsey being nothing short of a damn drama queen, but you don’t see anyone writing anything about that.

The creator of Grey’s Anatomy, Shonda Rhimes (who happens to be black), needs to set this straight because we all know how rumors can get out of hand.

TMZ, THE NATIONAL ENQUIRER, PEOPLE..

  1. If he did choke Dempsey, I’m sure there was a good reason. Not to condone his behavior, but you don’t just go around choking muthafuckas for no reason.

  2. TAYENYC

Well I hate to co-sign and hate on a brotha, but I work at a magazine and we had to work with him a couple of months ago, and he was a straight ass. He was so difficult that we decided to not even running the article. So that’s my two cents on it.

  3. Deez Nuts

1st! This guy maybe abit sexist but he is not an angry black man!

  4. @ 2. Are you serious? I like this guy as an actor, so I’m hoping he really didn’t say that shit (about T.R.).

I’m pretty sure he did choke Patrick out though.

  5. It’s funny that we’ve never heard of him being a “terror” before this happened.

  6. Anonymouse

I was on a gossip blog the other day, and I asked someone if it this whole thing about calling TR a “faggot” had been confirmed, and they tried to tell me that it had. Bullshit. They just want Isaiah written off the show. It’s a damn shame that people are making him out to be this monster. Who knows what happened on that set.

Saying things like “well since TR came out, it must be true”. More bullshit reasoning from the haters.

  7. litana

i wanna know what happened to that fool……why he acting a fool….

  8. GG Boo

People really really get on my nerves with this type of crap. He’s so angry yet he continues to be selected for role after role right? And yes, the creator needs to make sure she helps correct this ish. I don’t even watch GA, but I know that they have had some problems on the set. (And of course they all surroud the black man!! Boooooo!)

  9. litana

this shit smells like a conspiracy……

  10. Well his character will be dead before the season’s end…but ppl type anything nowadays. I thought TMZ was credible???

  11. Meatloaf

I hope ISAIAH WASHINGTON’s no on that $#!T again!

  12. TMZ isn’t credible if all they keep saying is “a source tells us that…”

I mean they have good candids and videos, but that doesn’t mean they don’t make shit up just like The National Enquirer..

  13. Yola

I gree with # 1, I’m sure Patrick Dempsey might have said something to provoke him.
I don’t like the term ‘Angry black man’. cause there are also so many other celebrities who are white and can’t managed their anger either, but you don’t really hear about that. The moment a black person looses their temper, then ‘all hell breaks loose’and it’s in the tabloid and all.

  14. I cosign with #1, Dempsey probably said something fucked up and Isaiah went off. Dempsey might’ve been making derogatory comments to Isaiah all along and the brother decided to check him now rather than hurt him later.

  15. DigThis

His attitude is extremely fucked up. And that is what has stopped him from plenty of roles that would have been perfect for him, because he is a good actor. A fucked up attitude doesn’t look good on anybody especially a man.

  16. Chandra Wilson is actually the name of the black female who created the show and plays the “angry” Miranda Bailey. I am definitely interested in her two cents. The reality is that often, black or white, actors are difficult and show diva-like attitudes. That is no reason to call the man (Washington) a horror or terror. White media kills me with that BS! I’m sure that he didn’t choke Dempsey without cause. If he outed Knight, then he was dead wrong but I just read that Knight outed himself.

  17. Nohabloya

If Isaiah Washington is angry black man
    then

Mel Gibson is an angry evil diabolical white man

  18. Society loves to castrate our Black Men, and tell them that they can’t express their emotions.

This sounds like a fight between two men.

this was a personnel discussion between two men and It really should not have been anyone else business..

Men need to fight. It’s good for men to fight…Men are very physical, and once they get the rage & tension out their system, things can resume as normal…

That’s what you can see two men have a fight, and then be friends five minutes later

  19. He better sit his ass down somewhere before he becomes the UNEMPLOYED BLACK MAN.

  20. Patrick Dempsey stricks me as one of those slick talking dudes…

He probably said something out of line, and Isaiah had to grab his neck….

Sometimes you GOT to do that….
Guys love to press another guys buttons, and sometimes you just got to let people know that you ain’t no punk…..

  21. kiki

This is so bizarre! I’ve been hearing about this story all week on t.v. Look how the media is so quick to blame the black man. To my understanding, BOTH Isaiah Washington and Patrick Dempsey (who is white) got into this “scuffle”. It take TWO to scuffle..but yet, the media is not blaming any of this on Patrick Dempsey at all. Only Isaiah is being singled out.

And now the media is saying that the reason T.R. Knight came out publicly and said he is gay is because Isaiah told Patrick “I’m not your little faggot T.R.”. The Isaiah/Patrick scuffle got out in the media along with this “alleged” remark that Isaiah supposedly made towards T.R. Knight. There’s not way that Isaiah can make T.R. Knight come out of the closet. T.R. Knight is just using this incident to ease himself out of the closet. How can the media blame all of this drama on just Isaiah? This is ridiculous…smh

  22. Chieb

    @16

Shonda Rhimes is the black woman who created the show. Chandra Wilson is the black woman who plays Dr. Miranda Bailey.

  23. ..I still think Patrick is cute..He’ll get it. (sorry)

  24. I agree with Bill…

Patrick Dempsey is a hot commodity on GA and he knows it…he knew he could get away with saying some f’ed up sh*t and he toke advantage of it.

I hope that Patrick enjoys his victory battle b.cuz his 15 minutes are ticking and then its off to the next “hot” caucasian boy…

If Isaiah is actually an asshole then shame on him…and he is grown enough to know that every action has a consequence.

  25. FreakeyStyley1

^^^ That was pretty brave! But kinda cute in way…

  26. Lola Falana

Just because he is black and on a show created by a black woman does not mean that “we” have to back outlandish, assaulting behavior and make excuses for it. Guys and Dolls….this guy has a history of repeated cast and director attacks on other shows that he has appeared on. Do a search on him if you do not believe me. To say ,”well he keeps getting jobs” is not a good indicator of his worth. Hell, even Robery Downey, Jr. gets jobs, but he still is a drug-addicted crazy.

You are right he is not any angry black man…..he is a CRAZY black man.

  27. FreakeyStyley1

My previous comment was aimed @ EBONY77

  28. JC

Oh please. Its one thing if they get into an argument. Its another to physically put his hands on someone. This is his job. He does this for a living. If any of us acted that way at our job we would be fired. He is too old to be fighting. Its a hit show. If I was a cast member and this was in fact a true story, i would want him gone. He would be messing with my paper.

  29. @ 26. Please post valid links about his previous “attacks” on tv and movie sets. I did a search when I was writing this, and all that came up was this recent stuff.

If I’m wrong, than so be it. But I want to see some valid sources about this stuff.

  30. Polo Montana

I think some people are going overboard against Wahington, but some folks are blindly defending him. I think it’s beyond Washington and Dempsey now. It’s now about whatever cause you stand for. People who support the homosexual agenda will do everything they can to take down Washington. Some black folk will label Washington a victim. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. Washington was egged on by Dempsey and they both were in the wrong. This didn’t just happen over night, this feud was probably brewing for some time now. I think both guys should have just shut up. Washington was doing movies like Wild Things 2 and Dempsey was still known for Can’t Buy Me Love. These guys should be happy that the sister made them stars. Now I’m just waiting for Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton to show up.

  31. Usher's Nose

I decided to stop watching Grey’s a few weeks ago because it’s become a full blown soap opera and I hate McDreamy and the skinny chick!!! The show sucks to me now. However, I believe both Iasiah and Patrick Dempsey have both stated NO ONE laid hands on any body. Isiah said it on Entertainment Tonight when the story was first reported but media outlets still print he choked Dempsey.

  32. I never said he was a victim. I’m just saying how these other blogs are just downing him for what happened and not saying anything about Patrick who was also invovled in the incident.

And who knows if he really said that thing about T.R., but the media is making sure to post about it every 10 minutes.

  33. NE-HO FOR NE-YO

    CO-SIIIIIIIGN WITH #26!!

  34. My whole thinking on the T.R thing is this:
The media never mentioned IW outting T.R, before T.R came forth himself & announced he was Homosexual. It couldn’t possibly have been a secret if everyone on set knew he was gay, I think this was a well thought out plan/ploy/strategy (for both T.R & maybe his PR people & management) to use this opportunity for him to be able to come out. This is industry behavior & it’s a shame if IW take the rap for outting someone, when he clearly did not.

  35. Why do all Black men gotta be “angry”? And if they are they prob have a damn good reason.

  36. and… before we judge IW and follow the trend of accusing the man of being the very easily painted “ANGRY BLACK BROTHER/SISTER” , realize that both parties wanted to keep the situation under complete wraps, which suggest that maybe IW had been provoked to have a meeting between his hands & McDreamy’s neck. I’ve always had the impression that IW was a jerk, but at the same time I also had the impression that he was proffessional. People can’t possibly think he (who has struggled in the industry for many years) is so comfortable that he thinks he irreplaceable…. I doubt that Sh!t!

Man, You really don’t know Isaiah Washington’s work…
Isaiah Washington was in Love Jones, Romeo must Die, Dead Presidents, Girl 6, Clockers & this really good independent Film called Trois 3, the Escort….Isaiah Washington isn’t some fly by night actor….He’s also appeared on NYPD Blue, New York Undercover…..

Black men usually just don’t go around knocking people out without some type of provocation….

That Patrick Dempsey dude was probably slick talking Isaih…

  38. Kerry

I totally agree with you Lola. Some black folks will always want to make victims out of people even when they are dead wrong. Whether he is black or white, if you get physical with someone then you need to be dealt with. Black folks did this same crap with Mike Tyson. Then we have to nerve to say we need proof! Go ask Nicole Ari Parker then. Actually the media didn’t blame Isaiah. When it was on Entertainment Tonight, they darn near tried to cover it up by doing comparsion stories on other shows in which the stars did not get along.

  39. anyll'doanyll'do

    to Bill,
I disagree with your opinion that men NEED to fight. We are physically expressive creatures, but that is why sports activities were created to serve as an avenue to release that physicality. Thing is I think that more reasoned individuals realize the consequences of violent expressions and the harm that can result. That being said, I’ve noticed over the years how actors who have a hit show on their hands begin to behave differently, being smug or demanding now that they’re popular/finally being well paid. It bothers me that this man is being demonized since his ego is most likely no larger than Dempsey’s now that they both can see some financial security being on a hit show. I know my temper, and I have learned to express myself without resorting to violence. What I have also learned, and this is where the double standard kicks in, is that THOSE people don’t have an answer when you don’t respond the way they expect you to, often resorting to the verbal violence of profanity or slurs. Pay close attention the next time someone (white) speaks of the right to say whatever they want without fear of a violent response to their words. What they mean is that they can say anything they want, but you can’t beat their ass for it even though social history has taught us that some transgressions can only be settled thru fighting. Whatever this outcome, it doesn’t look good for Isiah Washington because he’s been labeled angry in attitude as well as being seen as physically violent. He could, and more of us can learn how to fight in all ways, “they” will always change the rules, but once you learn to play by those rules it backs “them” into a corner where they can’t get out. Peace….

  40. southernbelle

Seems like I’m in the minority, but here goes:

Isaiah Washington’s comments and behavior were inappropriate. Putting your hands on someone is crossing the line. And what’s with all the provoked talk?? Last time I checked, Isaiah Washington was a grown ass man. Provoked or not, he could have handled the situation differently. If he had then we wouldn’t even be discussing this matter of whether or not he’s an “angry black man”. Could Dempsey have been talking “slick”? Sure, but the minute Washington put his hands on Dempsey it was over.

    Just my opinion.

  41. she's clever

People magazine’s coverage of the incident didn’t mention choking or anything, nor did it’s account seem scathing at all. Thank goodness, considering they are a highly trusted entertainment mag.

I hope everything works out for Isaiah, and he’s not what they are making him out to be. I cosign with Angel la, I really like him as an actor, and it would be a real blow to have a talent and a Black man as fine as him with a bad rep, or worse be removed from the air.

  42. @ FreakeyStyley1..I know (but its the truth)

I dont really know the REAL story. So right now I dont too much care. If Isaiah got mad for some petty ass comment such as, “I’m always ready”. Then he deserve the flack he’s getting. Does he deserve to lose his job no, but hey…shit happens. I am sure there is MORE to the story. So till then…Patrick will get it.

  43. We ALL know what this is REALLY about…

    it about the “Faggot” comment….
Had Isaiah not said that, everything would be cool…..

The majority of Blogs appear to be written by Homosexuals or those sympathetic to the Homosexual community, so of course the BLOGS are going to jump on the bandwagon and publish this report every ten minutes..

Isaiah will probably end up Blackballed (no pun intended) behind this nonsensce…

As my friend Such Magnificance stated:
    Every action has a consequence.

If he’s going to lose his job over this, he should kick patrick dempsey & tr knight’s teeth out

  44. I know 1 thing is for certain, people are a lot LESS forgiving of a black man in a situation like this, than they are of the likes of a (example) Mel Gibson. & the black community really need to check their “pick & choose” skills, because I’ve seen more support for that monster we call R. Kelly than I have for I. Washington, without the full story even being told.
    Tisk, tisk people!

  45. Sometimes with Genius’s you will encounter perculiar behaviour.

People make exceptions all the time for Barbra Streisand, Liza Minelli, Jack Nicolson, Mel Gibson, Robert Downey Jr, Keith Richards, etc, etc all the time…

Laurence Fishburne is known to walk around the set for weeks without speaking to his co stars.

Wesley Snipes….Well we all know how crazy he is…

If what some of the posters is saying is true, Isaiah Washington may apears to be “personality challenged” and he may well have some anger management issues…

But, Most actors have some type of personality quirk….That is a highly charged, emotional business be in…Long day & long nights on the set, unsteady work….I certainnly would be “stressed” if I had to do THAT on a daily basis….

  46. buzzzy

Maybe he’s a terror, maybe he isn’t. Hell, everybody loses their temper now and then. I did read that other actors were causing production delays by not showing up at their scheduled call times. That ain’t right. That may have just pushed his buttons. I can’t stand wannabe divas either.

Is Isaiah Washington gonna have to choke a bitch??

LOL Had to get that in! RIP Chappelle’s Show…

  47. Brandon Charles

To Bill aka #43, in the “real world” of business, you can’t just be chokin and putting the beat down on people no matter what they say. You have beef, handle it on the side off the set and out of the building. Regardless of who said what, if he got his choke slam on, he was wrong for that and they have every right to fire him. If he didn’t, then they need to put the truth out there.

  48. Nakia

    *sigh*
Now I’m not saying he didn’t do it, but both me and Dave Chapelle would pretty much have to see him do it…on video…with his grandma there wearing a mask…and holding up a federal ID with his picture on it…for me to say he’s guilty. LOL.

But seriously. It’s so sad how we all have to jumpt to one side or another for these people (actors/actresses) because unfortunatley mainstream society isn’t mature enough to destinguish one person from the rest of an entire race or ethnicity of people. Why does he have to be “angry black man” and not “angy Isaiah”? I get so tired of feeling like i have to be accountable for what every black person does in the world, when every black person in the world should feel accountable for themselves.

Actors & Musicians are TOTALLY different people from most…..We’re VERY emotional (I’m a musician) and we fly off the handle at the slightest provocation or perceived insult !!!

That why you always hear about this actor or that musician getting into fights, walking off set, refusing to records in the studio, etc, etc…

When a person is a Genius in a certain profession, they will sulk, throw tantrums, argue fuss & fight….

Watch the Computer Programmers on your job…
Don’t they have hissy fits, and act like drama Kings & Queens ???

  50. JUSTSOUKNO

Regardless of who is saying what, you have no rights to put you hands on someone. If this dude did do it, then he should be called out. Its funny how people want to stand behind and condone his behavior by saying maybe dude was talking slick. People talk shyt everyday you can’t go slapping people because of it. Hell one day you will slap the wrong one… Now dude has a bad rep which could keep him from getting other jobs in the future… You have to think hell.. your actions will have reactions..

  51. MissNee

If Isaiah choked him, then he was in the wrong. If he called someone a faggot, then he was in the wrong. I don’t know the details, but if Patrick didn’t put hands on Isaiah first or was calling him out his name, then there was NO REASON for Isaiah to react that way he did.

And hell the fuck yea this about the faggot comment, Bill. If Patrick had called Isaiah a nigger, then you better believe the reaction from black people would be vicious. What’s the difference in this case?

And if all of this did go down and Isaiah does lose his job, then he needs to kick is own teeth out. He’s the one that fucked up, not anyone else. It would be wise if Isaiah just acted like a man and not retaliate for his blunder.

    My people kill me sometimes….

  52. Tracey Edmonds, as in Babyface’s ex wife?? I had no idea she worked on that show too.

  53. Bruno

Multiple sources from various TV people like Kristen at E and Ausiello at TV Guide confirm that the above went down.

Dempsey and Knight were holding up production, Isaiah got pissed and yelled at Knight. Dempsey defended Knight and then said something along the lines like “Why don’t you pick on someone your own size” prompting Isaiah to attack Dempsey and hurl the slur to Knight.

It’s truly a shame since Grey’s is such a diverse show.

Knight’s behavior is unacceptable. Especially when the show is:

A- Created by a Black Woman (Shondra Rhimes) who is now the ABC Network darling and has more shows in development with them.

B- The strongest characters and the ones in authority are ALL black. The Chief is Black, Miranda Bailey who heads the interns Black, the TOP Cardio Thorasic Surgeon in the USA (Isaiah) Black.

Why would he act a fool. You are on the #1 show in America. Play your position and ride the gravy train until you get cancelled.

You know how many struggling actors there are out there dying to catch a break. And here is Mr. Washington at the top of the TV elite with a role that is written for him so good and he fucks it up.

  54. Bruno

One more thing, the day of the incident Dempsey was interviewed and he was professional enough to not mention the bad stuff that happened.

Not defending either, but I’m saying, if my show placed #1 on the Nielsen ratings consistently and I was on a buzz worthy show, not to mention if I was in my late 30′s early 40′s like Dempsey and Isaiah, I wouldn’t be choking NO ONE out.

It’s rare to find such layered roles in Hollywood for an older actor. Washington might have blown it.

I won’t front though I laugh at the “McChokey” nickname they gave him.

  55. Isaiah has to remember to get Dempsey the album with “Protect Ya Neck” by Wu Tang. LOL

  56. Hummingbirdee

The person that created the shoW & the person who person who plays Dr. Bailey are not the same person. The creator is a Black woman though, i saw her on the Essebce Awwards.

According to TMZ.com; this is NOT the first time that Mister Washington has acted in rage toward co-stars, or had idiotic aggressive behavior, to claim that he’s being persecuted by the media is to be ignorant of the facts.

Lets not cry racism when theres no reason to

He’s had two previous run-ins, one was so severe as to be requiring police interferance.

I might not be black, but I don’t go crying racism when a hispanic actor acts like a fool. I don’t provide excuses. Mr. Ex-Showtime-Soul Food is a hothead, and I have no doubts due to the evidence that he acted like an asshole

Right, but it wasn’t two gay men jokingly calling each other “faggot”. It was Isaiah calling T.R. Knight that. He was using it in a derogatory way. Surely, you can see the difference.
