I can testify that I have seen #55s “natural essence” and it is wonderful! And yes, her hair is soooo soft it can’t hold curl, so she has to rock a doobie all the time! Her hair is so healthy, but I think its time for her to try something new, cause she can’t use nigga products! That’s some strange $#!T, huh?

I meant relaxers with lye is like puting drano in ur head, and lye relaxers are almost always the only ones used at salons. All relaxers break the bonds in hair…sorry bout the wtf moment.

I love her hair! It looks wild but striking.

You know…if she just smiled, people would not care what her hair looked like. It’s the pain and her honesty holding her smile back. People would not care if she was bald with tattoos across her head if she just smiled for once.

People are so damn meanspirited though that they are always sounding like plantation slaves tearing people down. I wish you would do a post about slave mentality and people’s affinity to tear people down all the time. Everyone thinks that their opinions have to be so mean-spirited in critical assessment when the point is: she had a show. WTF is the issue about her hair? How simple? How cruel and vile we can be to always tear people down. We show what type of childhoods and families we come from when we act so animalistic and ferociously vindictive and think we are entitled to open our big mouths to put out disrespecting people.

If you looked deeper, you would see it and everything is not about her outfits and her hair as well as people in general. Who are we to judge and think this is entertainment when these people are real people with feelings too. Putting our two cents in to measure them affects whether they continue to embrace us or the give up and/or find no loyalty in us as supposed fans and supporters.

Her issue is vividly about her pain and she should not be ridiculed by others for not getting past it on our schedules. We are really an ugly group of people most of the time and we have no idea how mean-sprited we can be.

Thanks for showing me that she is still out there. At least we know she is fighting her the pain to get back out there. That is courageous of her. I’ll take her anyway I can get her until she is healed on her on time. I wished she would smile too but people are always wanting me to smile when there is nothing much to smile about. Like this.

I do like that CD the Miseducation. I won’t go as far as saying it’s the best CD ever, you would have to scour her influences in music and beyond to get that determination, but I do enjoy her music.

on a side note. Re: #63 comments. I truly believe that Lauren is amongst the working ill. I know this might sting in the hearts of many fans. But bottom line, this crosses all spectrums of a population. Her rants and raves, antics and behavior patterns over the past few years demonstrate as such. It probably goes untreated because, with the wealth (that she has left), they treat it as her being her, or eclectic. that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy her music. I like R. Kelly’s music, but I have seen “the video” and he is a pedophile.

I only wish her the best. . .And, like the others, hope to hear of what she drops to us, soon.

Honestly Lauryn will always look beautiful to me whatever she puts on or however she wears her hair…

I remember watching her on Dave Chappelle’s Block Party and wonderin’ what the hell she had on her head when she came out and sang with The Fugees. But as soon as she opened her mouth to sing the intro to ‘Killing Me Softly’, I fell in love with her all over again.

Her hair is irrelevant to me…not with that voice that always manages to capture every emotion and so heavy with pain. I wonder more about what she’s going through to cause her such a change from what she used to be more so than her fashion choices…She just coveys more depth than other “r&b” females today.

It amazes me that when woman (most of us) go through lifes changes the first thing we attack is our hair.
We either chop it off (erica badu), dye it (brittany spears), or put a head of weave or wig on as we see here. I love Lauryn but she needs to get back soon. I hate to say it but i see another bobby and whitney.

Ok, this has to be said AGAIN…natural hair IS for everybody!!! EVERYONE can rock a natural “look”. No one HAS to relax their hair. Every race on the planet can rock the hair that naturally grows out of their scalp..Black folks included. Now, we may prefer the look of our hair straightended, colored, weaved, etc., but please, for the love of God, realize that YOU CAN INDEED just wear the hair that God blessed you with. I think that the main issue is that most Black folks simply do not know what to do with a natural head of hair….(off my soapbox now) :)

her all those dogging lauryn’s hair, her hair is “chic” okay. Hair doesn’t always have to be smooth and slick, or combed to the left or right, sometimes it can just look so disheveled and that’s fashionable chic! I mean come on think outside the box! I mean some of you guys are so fuckin unimaginable, that when someone hair isn’t the “status quo” then it’s considered “a mess.” No this style get’s better the bigger and more out of control it is. Hair is used to express ourselve, and sometimes we feel like just letting loose and being out of control….all that to say, i love this style. I would rock the hell out of it with this capri jeans and high heels. As the rapper said “long hair don’t care.”

Keep Lauryn away from the kids! Not a good role model for young girls!

#36 diamond ~ Don’t be so bitter about bad hair!

I would rather be called “ignorant and foolish” than to wear my hair or “wig” like Lauryn’s and leave no doubt! She looks like she just showed up for a gig!

Wig??? Why would someone who use to be so real, need to wear something so fake! She should get on the Beyonce trend and go transparent!

Come on CrazyC! Lauryn has a “star quality” voice and persona! Why does she need to be a wierd “individual”? Trugh be told, Lauryn dissapeared from the public eye to get high and abused by the Marleys! Not to avoid “shallow people” as you have suggested! Stop trying to make something eclectic out of this bull$#!t! She’s eccentric, because she rolled the “geometrical center” up in zig-zag papers and smoked it! You know she’s on drugs!!!

I’m more concerned about her childrens thoughts when they see her losing weight, gainning naps and nodding out! Who’s caring for them??

She’s not special at this time! She’s been making this come back for about five years now! If her life is clean and wholesome, she owes it to her fans to let them know! Go on MTV Cribs or something! lol But, do something to dispell the obvious!

Sorry but I think Lauryn’s hair represents her state of mind! I was a huge fan of Lauryn, I loved her positivity, strength and beauty as a black woman. Yes she is only human and people change but I think being involved with a marley went to her head and her obsession with the bible. I have watched videos of her before the change and after and there is a clear difference to how she portrays herself. There was something special about her before. I read somewhere that she didn’t like it when people copied her style and wanted to look like her, so I suppose she’s making sure no one copies it this time. It’s not really about her hair though you just have to look at her face and see that it is not the same Lauryn. I do hope she comes back with a good album – she is missed a lot.

Her obsession with the bible should not be taken lightly! The word of God is a light unto our paths! It would have made her stronger, but the key word that you mentioned was “obsession”! Was she obsessed and using the Word to hide other actions? Was she getting high and reading the bible! You can’t play with God or his word like that! The devil was obsessed with the bible too! So, my point is, when you say that certains things “went to her head”, don’t make it sound like the word of God “went to her head”! I’m not disputing with you, because your statement is loaded with two possibilities! Clerify and we can talk!

In Psalm 119:11, the bible say, “Thy word I have hid in my heart”…not in my head! hehe

I was gonna leave this alone but I am sick of people acting all self-righteous when it’s suitable to their cause; especially black women who think they are going to get closer to God because of how they wear their hair! I am free to dislike anything I want to. She is not the Queen of Sheba. And funny how no one who had issues with my comment made any reference to the fact that I said I thought she was one of THE most beautiful women out there or the pictures I posted of Pam Grier — who I happen to think wore the fiercest naturals ever. All you could concentrate on was the fact that I hated the way her hair looked and turned it into a cultural/heritage issue about natural versus relaxed. People. I tell you.

Yes, this was a post about her at a concert. And yes, to some people, this wig is tight and looks “high fashion.” But did I criticize someone because they liked this look? So why all this outrage over me NOT liking her look? Live and let live people. When someone doesn’t like what you like, it doesn’t make them less of a person than you! People need to remove themselves from their ivory towers every once in a while. Maybe when we learn this we can get along a little better.

@ stopthemadness: How does the way I wear my hair make or break me? When did I become a product of my hair? Who made you the resident expert on what is or isn’t the right thing to do with my hair? When did God come down, lay a hand on you and say, ‘Please tell the children chemicals are whack. Natural is the way to go.’ If you feel that no one should change or alter anything God gave them then I hope you don’t wear makeup, have your ears pierced or any of that other ‘superficial’ sh!t we weren’t born with.

@ diamond: What’s so foolish about what I said? Am I foolish because I know I am not EXACTLY like every other black woman with respect to the hair HE blessed me with? Sweetie, God made us all different and everything doesn’t work for everybody. I’LL REPEAT IT FOR A SECOND TIME: ‘It’s ridiculous to believe that God made us all to look the same and have the same capabilities with our hair.’ I am not you, you are not me. Your hair is not like mine, my hair is not like yours. If you don’t get that, you’re the one that’s foolish.

@ Beyonce’s Lacefront!: When did I ever say anything about “good hair” or “bad hair”? When did I say natural hair wasn’t beautiful? Why do you feel the need to give me a history lesson just because I don’t like the child’s hairstyle? I said HER wig/hair looked ratty and sh!tty. If it was a weave down her back and it looked ratty, I would have said the same exact thing. Your statement makes it clear to me that you have obviously been brainwashed because I never once mentioned anything about natural hair looking better or worse than relaxed hair. ms_mac1 doesn’t like the way this wig looks on Lauryn so she is ashamed of her heritage. Yeah, OK. Good one. Next!

For any person that thinks Lauryn’s mental instability is a product of people who judge or criticize her, I say too fu*kin bad for her and you. It’s life. Live it. Everybody won’t like everything you do, and if someone suffers an emotional breakdown because I think their wig looks fu*ked up, they’ve got bigger problems than me.

When we are all on here rallying for her and saying how beautiful a person she is and how her music touches us, does that help her come out of her slump; the one she’s been in for almost 10 YEARS already!? Whatever. I uplift my people all the time. But I’ll be damned if I coddle them. Lauryn’s a grown ass woman. If all she needed was positive reinforcement to get back out there and do good music she would have dropped 100 albums already.

I love LH’s music. She needs to let the fans hear from her more often.

Lauryn’s hair looks fine to me. It’s just a matter of personal taste. Straight hair doesn’t really appeal to me…especially the see-thru, overprocessed lifeliess limp type of hair. I don’t like the look of the glued in hair weaves. I hate blonde weave and wigs on black folks. It looks tacky on 99% of the people who wear them. I would rock a big ‘fro, braids, and twists any day over the bulky sew-ins and that plastic looking weave garbage that is purchased from the Koreans. They’re overcharging anyway…

ASBURY…Are you serious? A Jheri Curl? I know where you are coming from though. My scalp is very sensitive. I just got lucky enough to get a lady with a very soft touch to braid my hair. She’s amazing. I’m constantly loosing and growing my hair out. It is very fine and soft and also tangles very easily. I had it natural for the last 2 years, but a few months ago I got a texturizer. My hair is so fine it looks like it is relaxed.

Meatloaf, I’m very calm sweetie. I’m just not going to sugarcoat my words for the sake of seeming agreeable. As for the importance of hair, that’s an individual thing and I refuse to debate with you on anything that has to do with the Bible. If that’s what you feel, cool. No argument from me there.

One of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen was this bald black woman who was recovering from cancer. As it relates to self-esteem, this woman was more confident in her looks than most people who can afford fifty million bags of Wet N Wavy or people who have real hair down to their ass cracks. In my world, hair or the lack of hair itself, is not what makes or break you. It’s how you carry yourself. And if I think you look a hot ass mess, I’m gonna say so.

I’m not above rethinking my position on any subject so in retrospect I can see where I seemed harsh (even though my original comment was more humor based than anything else). But for someone who follows Lauryn even when she is not in the public eye or on CL, I know she’s seen better days. That’s why I made the comment about her looking like a bag lady. She’s on a downward spiral IMO and I’m just wondering when she’s gonna get it together.

    Peace

I totally agree with the downward spiral, but I think the way a person, especially a woman presents herself, says a thousand words.

I tend to make bible references not for debate, but to help others understand the subtilties of my believes! I get on “one accord” with a lot of people by just telling them my basis! Concurence or opposition with my beliefs is never an issue for me! I can never be anymore than the messenger!

I enjoyed the “bag lady” humor, because it provides a snap shot of a serious perspective! Some of Lauryn’s fans can’t see through the forest! lol

Its like the discussion about noses on the black and white twins babies. I reminded people that the noses on the sphinx were all defaced so that history would not reveal how black people with wide noses could make such great accomplishments building the pyramids!

So, I look for a strong example to use and appreciate how beautifully blessed we are as black people! Nature speaks to us all the time. And, there is a homeless guy in town who never cares for his hair and it has matted up to look like Lauryn’s!

Throwing a lob-sidded wig on her head is no way to go out of the house…unless, her fans are lazy, high and doing the same thing!

Let me get up in this. Meatloaf has no clue what the hell he/she is talking about I must say that. I hate to engage in debates with people, only because I wind up getting deep in them, but smash it with a hammer, I’mma jump in.

Meatloaf: you say in post 104 “don’t take your eye of the hair” and then go on to mention Sampson and Mary Magdalene in the bible…..Mein Gott, you dont even know how you have contradicted yourself.

Sampson was a warrior, probably from the Middle Eastern areas of the world in the places between. He lived in a time before moose, perms, etc. I would like you to show me one middle easterner, one east asianer, and one western european who has beautiful flowing hair. Middle Eastern people have naturally nappy or thickly curly hair. Further more, now that we see Sampson DIDNT have flowing white people hair, we further prove that Sampson was a profound warrior who travelled, slept outside, barely washed, and refused to cut his hair because his power was there. Furthermore most middle eastern/biblical warriors didnt wash their hair for years at a time on war campaigns, so if anything Sampsons’s hair was probably kept in locs. Locs which didn’t originate in Jamaica like some of you think, originated in Middle East/Africa, Eastern Asia, and it is believed, specifically by Hindi priests that locs CONSERVE ENERGY, GENERATED HEAT ENERGY FOR THE MIND, AND ARE A SOURCE OF SPIRITUAL POWER AND ENERGY, a similar belief as that imparted to Sampson.

So if anything Sampson had dumb nappy dirty hair. And it probably didn’t look like modern day locs, because he wore helmets, slept outside, and as a warrior, probably barely took care of it. So his hair was probably matted and nappy to in most circumstances of his life.

The woman who wiped Jesus’ feet with her hair WAS NOT A WHITE WOMAN WITH A PERM AND MOOSE. She, like Jesus, was a middle eastern woman. This was before moose and perms and modern conventions like dryers and hot combs and what not. So her hair was probably, if anything, rough and curly. And because most middle eastern women covered themselves in shawls across their head, some took the liberty of barely taking care of their hair, so Mary’s hair could have been thick and curly as well. The bible does not say she pulled out her flowing Salon fashioned mane and Tyra Banks-esquely whipped it across Jesus’ feet. It says she wiped his tears with her hair. if her hair was straight and each individual hair was straight like a perm, then her hair would be not only very thin but also very loose, barely able to be used to sucessfully wipe tears.

I HOPE YOU KNOW THAT PEOPLE IN THE BIBLE WERE NOT WHITE AND WERE MOSTLY MIDDLE EASTERN, AFRICAN, WEST ASIAN AND EASTERN EUROPEAN NOT THE BEAUTIFUL WHITE SKINNED, BLUE EYES, BLOND HAIRED PEOPLE THAT YOU SEE.

As if that wasn’t enough peoplez, you got on to say in post 101 that was she doing other things and “the devil loved the bible” also quoting a psalm “i have hid thy word in my heart” and then you say not thy head.

    1. Who hell said the devil loved the bible. The Enemy (the devil) fell BEFORE the bible was even constructed and before man came along to write the bible. The serpent existed in the garden of Eden, already having known what the tree of life could do and already in plans against the devil. Metaphysically congruent, the part about the serpent being cast out of the garden and crawling upon his belly, eating dust and what not goes congruent if not in time then in circumstance when lucifer fell. The Bible as we know it today did not exist in finished form until sometime in 1000 AD. The Enemy fell before man was even created. The Enemy was the most powerful of all angels, commander of the Archangels, the chief angel of light, music, and sound, and God’s most beautiful creation. The Bible implies that The Enemy (Lucifer or the devil) is probably more beautiful than the Earth and even mankind, because it is said that Lucifer was God’s MOST BEAUTIFUL CREATION before he fell. Which was before the beginnings of the Earth. SO HOW THE HELL COULD THE DEVIL LOVE THE BIBLE AND HOW THE HELL COULD THE DEVIL LOVING THE BIBLE BE AN EXAMPLE OF HIS FALL FROM GRACE IF HE FELL BEFORE THE EARTH WAS EVEN CREATED. No need to rush…I’ll wait.

As if that wasnt enough you say the word of God should be hid in your heart not your head. YOUR HEART ONLY PUMPS BLOOD, IT CANNOT SUPPORT EMOTION. HUMANS ATTRIBUTED THE HEART TO EMOTION BECAUSE THE HEART’S BEAT IS AFFECTED INTERUPPTED, AND THE CHEST SWELLS AND FLUTTERS DEPENDING ON EMOTIONAL RISES. BUT EMOTION COMES FROM THE BRAIN. HEART DOES NOT CREATE EMOTION. ONLY DUMB WESTERNERS CREATE THE IDEA OF A SEPERATATION BETWEEN THE HEART AND MIND. EASTERNERS AND THE ENLIGHTED, PARTICULARLY THE JAPANESE DO NOT MAKE A SEPERATION BETWEEN THE SEAT OF EMOTION AND THE SEAT OF INTELLECT BY CALLING ONE THE HEART AND THE OTHER THE MIND. KOKORO IS THE JAPANESE WORD FOR BOTH HEART AND MIND…. BECAUSE THERE IS NO SEPERATION BETWEEN THE TWO.

In post 106, you call her a one hit wonder with ONE SUCESSFUL ALBUM WITH THE FUGEES. Let’s review Lauryn’s credentials, shall we:

1992- Sister Act II became a huge smash. Roger Ebert attributed it to Whoopi Goldberg, of course, and Lauryn’s breakthrough performance and “joyful voice”. The soundtrack was also sucessful. That’s ONE HIT.

1996: The Score sold 18 million records and won numerous Grammy’s spawning 5 singles: Ready or Not, Killing Me Softly, Fugee-La, Cowboys, and No Woman No Cry. Lauryn was the star of the album. That’s FIVE HITS.

1998: Miseducation of Lauryn Hill dropped winning more than 20 awards including 5 grammys, one of which was album of the year. Lost Ones, Ex-Factor, Everything Is Everything, Doo-Wop, To Zion, Final Hour, Nothing Even Matters, and Can’t Take My Eyes Off You were all singles which received heavy airplay. THAT’S EIGHT SINGLE HITS.

2002: Unplugged 2.0 is released and sells one million records. It is nominated for a Grammy for “Mystery of Iniquity” and the footage for “Just like the Water” is made into a video shown on VH1 and MTV. That’s TWO HITS.

2004: Kanye West samples the “All falls down” chorus from Mystery of Iniquity for his song “All Falls Down”. It becomes a hit, because of his rhymes and Lauryn’s chorus. That another HIT, indirectly.

2005: Lauryn does the So High Remix with John Legend. It receives heavy airplay, charts on Billboard, and is nominated as Best R&B duet. THAT’S ANOTHER HIT.

Let’s count shall we. More than one hit CD with the Fugees, she’s actually had two masterpiece CD’s and one that was slept on. As far as “one hit wonder”. She’s actually had 18 songs hit the airwaves in her 14 year career.

In post number 98, you say her hair is not a good influence on her children. What the hell do you know about Lauryn aside from her public appearances. At least get to know her personal life better before making such ridiculous judgments.

In post 96, you say her nappy hair is not a good influence on young women. Why is that. Because you want Willie Lynch, white supremacy thought to keep enslaving our black women. You want them to keep thicker features big noses curved bodies and nappy hair isnt sexy. Nappy hair is beautiful. Only reason African American women dont think so is because they have been poisoned by the slave man philosophy. Willie Lynch bullsh*t and insipid slave trash that says our nappy hair aint beautiful. So dumb massa-serving Madame (Madame of what…prostitution of black pride) C.J. Walker tells you if you put poisonous skalp burning lye and perm conditioner in your hair for a few minutes, your nappy hair will look acceptable to the white man. And it still aint striaght, cuzz every two weeks-month you gotta go get more poison in your head. Have you seen what that does to the hair and to the scalp. beautiful black women running around putting acidic lye in their head because in the back of their mind their willie lynch mothers told them “you aint beautiful unless your hair is straight, comb them naps out girl”.

Go to Africa, Jamaica, Haiti. Look at those women. Nappy hair on they head. And I dare you to find one who looks like a “nigga” or one who isnty beautiful. How on earth does nappy hair make you look “ignorant and foolish” like you say in post 96.

Free your mind. You preaching the bible and freedom, but you been programmed and conditioned…even your conditioning has been conditioned.

In Psalm 119:11, the bible say, “Thy word I have hid in my heart”…not in my head! hehe

I see your point that it wasn’t clear what I was saying. What I mean’t was that some people can take their belief in something too far until it can drive you to a state of madness. Lauryn came across as being overly fixated on the bible. I remember when she won the Grammys and she had the bible with her, even then I thought that was too much. Then she also went away to study the bible with someone, (I can’t remember who it was now)? and I can’t really see how she has benefited from that, she looks more confused more than anything. There may be some verses in the bible they maybe uplifting but you cant live by it word for word. Hope this is a bit clearer to you.
