*I recently convinced a friend (who is non-black) to open up about her abusive relationship with a well known black celebrity. The physical and mental abuse was so severe, she is still undergoing therapy.
She met him at a party and he swept her off her feet. She was also impressed by his celebrity. When she called and told me she was dating him, I warned her about the physical abuse rumors surrounding him. She brushed off my information but a warning sign did go up when he told her, ‘He was extremely jealous and he didn’t know what he was capable of doing if he ever caught her fooling around on him.’
Despite the remark, they moved in together, things started off okay until his cocaine use escalated. She was also taken aback by his critical comments of black women, since many of her friends were black. He would go on verbal tirades, putting down black women. She said, his rhetoric sounded like something you would hear from a white racist. When her white female friends came over to visit, he was talkative and posed with them for photos. When her black female friends came over, he didn’t even acknowledge them. He was cold and distant. When she confronted him, he punched her in the face and threw her down.
She moved out, he was apologetic and promised not to hit her again, he also lavished her with candy, jewelry and flowers. Foolishly, she went back.
During this time, she began to hear rumors that he was soliciting sleazy street prostitutes behind her back.
When she went on the set of one of his films, she noticed he was agitated, he told her, they had cast a black woman in the film and he planned to make her life miserable, which he did. The actress would complain that he was very rude to her and tried to humiliate her in front of the cast and crew at every turn.
Later, he vowed, this wouldn’t happen again, he had his agent put a clause in his future contracts, he would have casting approval. In future films, his female co-stars were not black.
One night, he hosted a party, she lost track of him, she found him in a room, with a man and she saw white powder under his nose. After the party, he beat her, because she hadn’t knocked before she entered the room.
Before she left him for good, she said, he was strung out on drugs and paranoid. He was also spending all of his money on cocaine.
She also said, ‘it was odd, right after he covered me with bruises, it seemed like a turn-on to him, he always wanted to have sex, after he beat me up.’ She adds, ‘It was almost like the bruises aroused and excited him, the abuse was like foreplay for him.’
Recently, she heard from a mutual friend, that he was using a ‘Metro’ phone ($45 dollars a month, unlimited calls) to converse with people and that his last remaining business had gone belly up. He was flat-broke.
