Looks like Def Jam has lost another female artist. The “Princess Of The ROC”, also known as Teairra Mari, has apparently left the label calling it a “business decision”.
She made this announcement recently on her Myspace blog and has already changed her record label status to “currently looking”. Teairra’s first and last album “Roc-A-Fella Presents: Teairra Mari” on Def Jam scored two hits for her last year, “Make Her Feel good” and “No Daddy”.
Is this departure related to recent compliants about Jay-Z’s lack of interest many artists at the label? Mari was under the wing of the Def Jam president and he even personally escorted her to numerous press appearances during the pre-release of her album. But a short time after Mari’s release, it seems as if he was long gone along with Teairra.
Or perhaps it was just a personal and business decision not relating to Jay at all. Mari has stated that she is still on good terms with everyone at the label. Yet some can’t help but think that Mari was top priority at Def Jam for a very short amount of time.
I wasn’t a fan of her music personally, and I hated that “No Daddy” song. But, I always thought she was a very cute and talented young lady. As of now, Teairra is still at work on her second album, while looking for a new label home. We’ll see how her career follows through.

Teairra has a beautiful voice i hope she finds a label soon. I listened to her last album and she had decent subject matter to talk about not just about the opposite sex or baby u drive me crazy blah blah blah. She also as a versatile voice. i wish milian got that SOS song so rihanna would be gone.

Her Career was doomed after Rihanna dropped her second album. Its almost a no-brainer that her album dropped way before rihanna and rihanna is already on her sophmore set! Well I wish her the best, but the singles she choose were overdone kiddy songs and aint nobody really feelin that. I think Jay-Z has made alot of mistakes as president and the only reason he is comin out of retirement is to redeem himself and the label. But buisness is buisness……..

Hey Bill! Well Rihanna and Neyo are two new artists that have platinum albums from Def Jam. There may be more.
Also, Jay may not have done all he needed to do as president. However, I think LL’s popularity was waning before Jay was even appointed, so I don’t think Jay is the reason for LL’s lack of sales. He’s still fine though!

There are certain artist out there that folk just won’t take seriously, and I think she was one of those that you roll your eyes at and say, “Great, you got ONE song, but no “star quality” that will have you around 5 years from now!”, we look at people like Ashanti, Rhianna and Maya the same way… while they have a fan base, it’s not great enough that anyone will give a damn in 5 years.
So maybe she NEEDED to get new management – an a new artist development team to mold her into someone people will actually care about, cause right now, she’s just a chick that people know know of Tierra Mairie (or however the hell you spell it) is a girl… or a group.

I totally agree with all that you’ve said there.
I even agree with LL Cool J. It seems Jay is good at promoting Jay. Same with Puffy. Bad Boy has been *blah* until recently…and I’m wondering how long these new acts will sustain. I’m surprised Danity Kane sold at all…but I digress.
My point? Being an artist AND an executive. Who achieves that balance in this business? Who has? Pharrell? Yeah with his first release it was on point…Puff? Puff is all about himself. He’s done great with his clothing line, but has sucked ass when it comes to reinventing his labelmates and artist (re: the revival of Craig Mack and Mase and Black Rob…they were barely registered on the damn monitor before they faded back into non-existence) and all this leads me to question, what is it really about? Hype? Just Hype enough to sell a few million and then damn the artist, we don’t need ‘em, ‘coz we made the money and… I just don’t get it.
Now Jay and Tearri (sp?) I’ve heard of her before…I’ve READ SO MUCH on her, wayyy before she came out, but have I heard her songs? Probably only by accident. I knew the name (Industry hype and whatnot) but I knew not the music and now she’s leaving.
I just don’t get it…maybe businessmen need to stay businessmen and artists need to be artists.
Are you truly helping out the artists on your label by releasing an album that will be in blatant competition with them? What the hell? Maybe Jay just missed ‘the game’ of it all and wanted to come back…fine…take the exec. hat off and put on the artist cap and let someone else handle the books, the promotion, the new jocks trying to get in the game. Do they stand a legitimate chance of achieving anything when their boss is their damn competition?
I don’t hate Jay. I don’t hate Puff. I don’t hate any of these guys because I couldn’t do what they’re doing, artist-wise/entertainment-wise, but I will say this…if I worked in this business it would be on the business/corporate/talent search/promotional side of things…’coz as an artist, a lot of times you just get screwed.

We already talked about the fact that the girl can’t carry much of tune, so it’s obvious that Rihanna’s success was already planned from jump.
I mean, the girl got hooked up with hotter producers and songwriters than Teairra.
This whole thing was a game that poor Teairra, unfortunatley, ended up losing.
The way that record companies play with their artist is just ridiculous.
I mean, if you don’t plan on really promotiong an artist or giving them some type of support, then why even sign them in the first place?

And word, Rihanna got way more attention than T did, without much reason. I guess they figured that Rihanna would be a better artist to push cause she’s more exotic. It couldn’t be because she’s more talented than T.
The problem was people slept on Teairra. Rihanna got more publicity even though Teairra was the “Princess of the ROC”. They didn’t push Teairra’s album like they should’ve. I got her album the day it came out and I’m still bumping it a year later! They messed up releasing “No Daddy”. Her song “Act Right” should’ve been the second single and “Phone Booth” should’ve been the third or vice versa…and even after they realized “No Daddy” wasn’t living up to the success of “Make Her Feel Good”, they should’ve pushed a third single, which was supposed to be “Phone Booth”. Some people shouldn’t be running a record label. I’m actually glad she left Roc-A-Fella b/c she really does need a label that is going to do what they need to…like Capitol Records! They messed up with Faith Evans…but they’re pushing LeToya and Cherish…(congratulations to them b/c LeToya is my girl! “Torn”, “She Don’t”, and her next single “Obvious” are my jams…as well as “Do It To It” and “Unappreciated”)
