Poster #70, I wouldn’t be surprised AT ALL if Beyonce was nominated for an Oscar. Hollywood seems to love her and I can’t figure it out to save my life.
The fact so many people think Beyonce is so talented confounds me and quite frankly, it buggs me. Beyonce can’t touch Jennifer Hudson vocally and all anyone can talk about is Beyonce in this film. If Beyonce opened her mouth and a voice on the level of Aretha, Patti, Glady’s, Whitney, Mariah, or even Kelly Clarkson, came out I could understand. But a woman, whose writing ability is as shallow as a kiddie pool, acting ability as amaturish as anyone off the street, and the vocal ability of someone who can do no better than hold a tune but tries to over-sing to cover the fact all she can do is simply hold a tune (Beyonce, just give me a simple whole note sweetheart with no acrobatics), really don’t impress me at all.
Beyonce is a black woman with somewhat caucasian features, with the most obvious being her skin color and blonde wigs, and the world has put her on a undeserved pedestal for it, which has opened up such opportunities for her. Anything that appears to be closer to white still has advantages and Beyonce is a screaming example of that.
This trailer still did not make me want to spend my money to see it.
That’s gonna be good. Bee is gonna either get an Oscar nod or win a Golden Globe for her performance. I’d bet on it.
This movie will be big…..but only because of the people in it. If beyonce wins an Oscar or Golden Globe for ACTING and not singing, Hell WILL freeze over because babygirl can’t act. She can sang her ass off…..but she can’t act lol. I think Jennifer Hudson will come out as the star in this movie though. Anyway, I don’t want to see this movie. Suppose to be based on the supremes. I might rent it later.

Just forget about the evil witch that takes over and everything will be fine… Just go get u a weave, some heavy make up and drink hotsauce to loose some weight..then sing some songs about how weak u are for a man…Anybody can do that right? But who really wants to sell-out??? I hope the movie does well for the actors that can act…

I hope this movie does EXTREMELY WELL at the box office. I won’t see it on Dec. 25th, but I will see it during that week though.
For everybody betting for/against Beyonce getting nominated for an Oscar, I’m confused. Isn’t there usually a cutoff for movies to premiere before the Academy decides who to nominate? Won’t Dreamgirls premiere past that deadline? Please correct me if I’m wrong.
For everybody complaining about the script being written to merely showcase Beyonce, I talked to people who originally saw the musical DreamGirls and they said that Deena’s character was the main character and Sheryl Lee Ralph (who played Deena in the musical was the touted star), but Jennifer Holliday (who played Effie) became the breakout star. That makes sense because of the history of the Supremes.
I can’t convince you to see this movie. If you are basing your decision on quality, so be it, but I do remember Akeelah and the Bee not doing well at the box office and both Oprah and Starbucks promoted it.
Last, this country overall is not a meritocracy. The most successful people according to American standards, are not the smartest, most beautiful, nor most talented, but are the most driven (or ruthless, opportunistic, whatever connotation you want to apply). That is good and bad. Ahh, but the race is not given to the swift….
Diana Ross nor Beyonce Knowles were the most talented singers in their respective girl groups IMO. However, Diana wanted the fame more (her lovechild with Berry Gordy is a testament to that). And no matter how much you hate her, give credit where it is due— with the exception of Britney Spears (at her prime) Beyonce is on top of the game (and Lord I hope that MediaTakeOut picture is doctored somehow…)

Maybe it was just me, but when people made comments that Beyonce is “acting as herself in this movie” I interpreted that as, she still sounds like herself, sings like herself and so on and so forth; not that the plot of the movie was about her. Either way, thats how I feel aswell. When I watched the trailor, I didnt see the Deena character at all, while as right from the beginning I saw Eddie Murphy’s character, Jamie’s, etc. Beyonced used that same accent, tone of voice, mannierms in all her films–and YES, I have seen them all–and I truly hope all of her acting isnt like this in the film, because if it is than Lord help her.

Beyonce can’t act to save her life, but she fits the part physically and image-wise.
Actually, correct me if I’m wrong but wasnt the character supposed to be heavy set and darkskin (I recall reading the original actress mentioning that, explaining why she didnt like Beyonce playing the part) so she does not. Ironically, what do you know, Beyonce’s lighter than ever and lost some weight for the role. Strange.

Actually no Deena was not suppposed to be heavyset and dark skinned. She was supposed to be pretty, petite, and brown skinned with a cute but not powerhouse voice. Sheryl Lee Ralph (the original Deena) was all of those things PLUS she could act unlike Beyonce. Beyonce is not a good actress at all and I doubt she gets nominated for an oscar for best actress. Thats a big stretch for a person with no acting talent. She can sing her ass off but she’s no jennifer hudson….jennifer is gonna be the star of this movie….sorry to disappoint you beyonce stans but thats just the way it is

She has raw talent so give the girl a chance for God’s sake.Whether or not you people like her she’s making more money than you will ever dream of. So take a chill pill.

In fact, I saw Sheryl Lee Ralph, the original Deena,(http://www.sherylleeralph.com/) recently interviewed (via Martha Stewart) and she quickly corrected that comparison. She explained that it is in fact based on the group’s struggle to make it – like many of the (female) groups of that era.
Beyonce’ did mentioned that she channeled the spirit of Motown groups, Diana Ross and watched her films to get ready for the part. But, the original play, (http://www.tamswitmark.co.../musicals/dreamgirls.html), was centered around the lead/Jennifer Hudson’s character (Effie,) originally played by Jennifer Holiday. Though, I am absolutely a Beyonce fan … She is gorgeous, talented, grounded, and hard-working. It’s amazing that the Golden Globes is recognizing Miss B, as the lead …instead of Jennifer Hudson, a simply phenominal singer!. Jennifer gave a fantastic performance as a rookie actress! (Gotta give her props)
We will see more of her to come!
I can’t wait to see the film, because I, too, love films from the early R&B period and too support quality Black films. I think the entire cast is great. Eddie and Jamie are always on point. I don’t think that Anika Noni Rose (who plays Lorrell Robinson)gets enough credit. She is a great performer/actress – best known for her role in ‘Caroline, or Change’ on Broadway. But I am really happy to see Jennifer Hudson in the lead (she has raw talent) and she made Simon eat crow. I think we should all support the film, either at the box office or on DVD.
Even though the story’s been done (recently saw reruns of both “Sparle”, “3 Hartbeats” “The Temptations” and “Dream Girls”). I am sincerely happy for the success of the entire cast. There is very little that we can’t learn to do and surpass at every milestone. I just love to see us EXCEL, succeed in a positive light and prove the majority wrong! “Congrats”, to everyone in the (new) cast!!
