THANDIE NEWTON’S SHOCKED AT A ‘BLACK’ ANGELINA

Friday, October 13, 2006

ta.jpg
Thandie Newton was amazed when she learned Angelina Jolie is to play a black woman in her latest film. The actress couldn’t hide her surprise when she was shown a picture of Angelina as murdered journalist Daniel Pearl’s mixed-race wife in the new movie about his life and death.

Thandie said:

“God I’m shocked. She’s been blacked up to play a black women. I have to say it’s surprising, very surprising.” [SOURCE]

Although the Crash star did confess she was a little jealous that the role in A Mighty Heart hadn’t gone to her, she refused to criticise Angelina. Talking at the Screen Nation Awards on Tuesday night, she added:

“It’s an absolutely fantastic role, I would loved to have played it. But I’m not going to criticise or judge her until I’ve seen the film, that would be wrong of me.”

I think Thandie is a great actress…I think she would have done a great job in the movie. However, it seems like the lady this movie is based on is close to Angelina and probably wants a very famous actress to play the role anyways.

Not that Thandie isn’t pretty popular…but she isn’t up there with Angelina as far as celeb status is concerned. I just look at it as a business move by casting Angelina.

So, Thadie Newton is “shocked”…
and……

I never even heard of Thadie Newton until the other day…

Listen: Angelina Jolie is going to portray Marianne Pearle in this movie.
Black People are just going to have to accept this fact and get on with their lives….

I never seen people on CL get as upset about a subject, as they did about this.
1. 400+ PEOPLE POSTED ON THIS TOPIC. THE MAJORTITY OF THE POST WERE FROM PITBULL, MISSINFORM-ER , BOOGIE , TOO TOT , GEMINIPRIZE, HAUTIA, HELL2THANAW, ETC, ETC

It’s ridiculous.
Marianne Pearle CHOOSE Angelina Jolie to play her.
End of Story…
Marianne Pearle is half white (dutch/french),
So it makes sense to pick Angelina Jolie.
Angelina Jolie Husband is producing the film.

I don see what the problem is….

Act Bad, Don't Hurt Me, Look Sexy, Talk Dirty

Friday, October 13, 2006 /

Angelina LOOKS like a person of mixed heritage if you ask me. And who cares; if I was producing a movie and I had to make a choice between an A-List Angelina Jolie(who actually can PASS for an “ethnic woman” and a B list Thandi Newton (who I actually like and think is a great actress as well) I’d DEFINITELY go with Angelina Jolie; because the movie making business is what? (say it with me) a BUSINESS and that almighty dollar is what everybody cares about at the end of the day; damn black and white.

http://celebggm.blogspot.com

Nobody cares that Halle is about to black a white woman, and nobody was “alarmed” when Jeffrey Wright (a very light puerto rican) played Martin Luther King.

I thought Thandie Newton did a terrible job in Beloved (”mah diamondsss!”) and haven’t paid to see another one of her movies since then. She sounds salty to me. Personally I think that Angelina is a much better actress, not to mention the fact that Mrs. Pearl personally picked her. Also from what I understand Angelina’s mother is mixed (french, first nations I think)

23.

Ana

Friday, October 13, 2006 /

Wow! you guys are a lot more objective on this subject than the folks that posted on ybf.com My lord, some of them got pretty salty. I happen to be of the opinion that if Marianne Pearl is okay with Angelina playing her, bronzer and all, fine by me. Do I think Thandie would have been a better choice? Sure, but the flick would have had a much smaller draw. Most folks outside of the UK don’t know who the hell Thandie is. On the other hand, Angelina, like her or not, you know who she is. At the end of the day, the film industry is a business. While some do make movies to make a statement, the studios fund films in order to make a profit.

24.

NetworKing

Friday, October 13, 2006 /

Well for one, Brad Pitt is directing the movie, so of course he’s gonna have Angie do the role. Also I dont see anything wrong with it. It’s not like she’s making fun of someone. She seems like she’s playing a seriousor le…she’s not making fun of black people. Shawn and Marlon dressed up like white women and made fun of how white people are. Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence dressed up like Fat women and made fun of them… That one guy ( I cant remember his name all the sudden) Dressed up as an old lady, Mrs. Doubtfire. It’s just acting. As long as she aint jumbing around wit a bango with a piece of watermelon in one hand and a piece of chicken in the other, it’s all good! She already got the lips for it!

27.

Tigress81

Friday, October 13, 2006 /

Angelina Jolie seems like the type of person who would have been very interested in portraying Mariane Pearl and probably lobbied for the part. What is Brad Pitt truly going to say, no? If she was not interested, then there would have been open auditions and I am quite certain a woman of color would have been cast. Please correct me if I am wrong, but Daniel Pearl would be the central character and I think Dan Futterman (no Tom Cruise) is playing that part.

Believe it or not, Hollywood will gamble on unknown actors if it will keep the budget down. That is also a side of the business. In any event, thank you Thandie for being candid and classy in your response at the same time.

Other than Crash and Beloved, another familiar role for Thandie would be as Makemba or Kem, Dr. Carter’s love interest who loses their child on ER. She is a talented actress, who is willing to take a gamble (e.g Norbit).

I MAY CATCH A LOT OF HEAT FOR SAYING THIS, BUT HERE GOES…

PEOPLE NEED TO STOP TRIPPIN’ ABOUT ANGIE PLAYING THAT ROLE…WE ALL KNOW IT’S BECAUSE OF BRAD PITT’S PRODUCTION COMPANY MAKING THIS MOVIE THAT SHE HAS THE ROLE…EVERYONE IS FORGETTING THAT THIS ROLE WAS ORIGINALLY JENNIFER ANISTON’S. NOW, IF ANY WHITE WOMAN DESERVES TO PLAY A BLACK WOMAN AND THE BLACK COMMUNITY NOT BE UPSET ABOUT IT, IT’S ANGELINA JOLIE. SHE DOES MORE THE PEOPLE OF AFRICA THAN ALOT OF BLACK ENTERTAINERS DO, THAT’S FOR DAMN SURE. ANGIE USES HER CELEBRITY TO BRING WORLDWIDE ATTENTION TO THE ISSUES PLAGUING AFRICA, AND I APPLAUD HER FOR THAT…HER DAUGHTER IS BLACK, AND I DON’T SEE ANYBODY TRIPPIN ABOUT THAT. SHE MAY NOT BE BLACK, BUT I THINK SHE HAS ETHNIC FEATURES (THOSE LIPS YA’LL!) AND SHE CAN PULL IT OFF. PEOPLE JUST NEED TO CREATE A CONTROVERSY WHERE THERE IS NONE. JENNIFER LOPEZ PLAYED AN ITALIAN WOMAN IN “THE WEDDING PLANNER,” THAT’S WHY IT’S CALLED ACTING. IT’S A ROLE.

Angelina is part native american. She can act, I wish they would have gotten a black actress just because we can play great roles but that’s not what the money machine is about. The women didn’t want a black women to play her. She isnt black.

31.

Friday, October 13, 2006 /

I’m not sure how I feel about this.

While I appreciate the attention the movie will get because of Angelina’s status, I still can’t shake the fact that there are SO FEW ROLES for african american people in GENERAL in Hollywood, that when there is an opportunity to give a plum role to an AA actr, they should.

You won’t see Gabrielle Union being cast as Marie Antionette, just because she is a better actress than Kirsten Dunst.

Bios should be as truthful and believeable as possible.

That being said, I respect Angelina for wanting to do this……I just think it shows an obvious Hollywood double standard.

Excuse Me? Gabrielle Union a better actress than Kirsten Dunst? You are on that issue. Gabrielle Union has done nothing but cookie cutter “i’m the hot girl of the cast” date movies while Kirsten Dunst has been doing big budget films since before she hit puberty. That girl can act her ass off.

…and she went to my high school.

I see Thandie Newton point. If you are going to go there, some me question Thandie’s “blackness”. Not to mention how some black actress would love to get roles traditional “labled/written” for a white women.

For example, Halle Berry did an excellant job starting in “Tje Rich Man’s Wife”, “Gothika” and “Cat Woman” which were meant for a white actress until she convinced the producers/directors otherwise. Halle did a great job playing these roles and I have doubt Angelina will do a great job too.

Also, Angelina is sensitive and respective of issues facing the Nation of Africa. I think she gets a pass for adopting and caring for Little Zahara (so cute) and her activism in Africa.

She better play it right! Because Thandie is a great actress too, and to be honest with you she is the obvious choice. But we’ll see how the movie turns out. But this is no ordinary role. Angelina has to look, sound…..Be Mariane Pearl without making it seem fake or rehearsed.

I don’t have a problem with Angelina Jolie being cast in this part. I do however, feel that it was unnecessary to darken her up. We come in all shades, so the use make-up in this regards to me is ignorant. I also will have a problem if they try to lighten up Halle for her role like they did in ‘Queen’.

“Thandie, Its just a movie.”

I mean, c’mon. Just like they picked Halle to play a white woman because she was the best actress for the job; they picked Angelina the same way. They felt she was better. As long as she does justice to the film, as she will most likely do, its okay.

Oh, and so we are clear, marrying a white has nothing to do with being “proud” of your black heritage.

You too Annie #38..her marrying a white man has nothing to do with her not being proud of her African heritage. Like #46 said, Thandie has always said she was black and acted proud. What do you want her to do?? Grab some fried chicken and get a gold tooth??

My whole point is this - Thandie married a white man so obviously race didn’t matter to her then so why does it matter now that she got passed over for a movie role and it was given to Angelina Jolie? As if it isn’t already difficult for black women to get roles in hollywood…

now there giving away roles made for black women to white women……

A white woman will never know what it’s like to be a black woman and vice-versa……you can act what is fake to you.

By the way, the difference with the WAYANS BROTHERS playing white girls is it was a parody, a comedy….
for a real life role, having a white woman depict a black womans life is nothing but an insult! And Thandie Newton is a great actress….there are many great black actresses that could have pulled this off w/o playing dress up……..

I don’t like Kirsten Dunst..she’s annoying to me. If you like her, then fine, but you don’t have the right to question anyone who dislikes her.

#52…I think the problem lies in the fact that Mrs. Pearl has no connection or respect for being black..she’s one of those rainbow folks who actually believe color isn’t important…if you notice, those are the ones who usually have a problem with being classified as black.

Friday, October 13, 2006 /

Okay we need to clear this up. Halle Berry is NOT playing a white woman. She is playing a black woman whose character is based on the true-life story of a white woman. She will not be wearing “white face”.

Angelina Jolie is essentially in “bi-racial face”. She has been made to appear as a black or bi-racial person would. IF COLOR IS NOT AN ISSUE why not just let Angelina play the role as a herself as Halle is? Obviously they felt the need to make her ethnicity part of the movie. Therefore if her color was THAT important why not cast an actual woman of color.

This is nepotism at it’s worst. And given the history of black face and the fact this imagery is still used in the mainstream in a number of countries that at the very least insensitive and just plain silly.

I have an issue with it because there are so few opportunities for black women to play leading roles in more “mainstream” films and I don’t think they’d ever consider having a person of color playing a real-life white person in a “msinstream” film no matter the circumstances (ex: Jesus).

If the wife of the guy picked her and it’s her husband’s film then cool, but I still can’t say I’m comfortable with how this went down all the same.

And the other issue I have is that I don’t see how Angelina won’t overtake the role. I mean I don’t see how anyone can watch the movie and not conciously think of how they’re watching Angelina in blackface to play this role when in other films (like Ray), the character was bigger than the actor especially since Jamie wasn’t as big at the time so you only saw the film for the story and not for any particular actor.

If the wife of the guy picked her and it’s her husband’s film then cool, but I still can’t say I’m comfortable with how this went down all the same.

Nothing against Angelina, but very few had anything bad to say bout her. Thandie caught all kinds of hell. It seems to me that the peeps on CL are quick to dog out a black person, it does not matter if they are doing the right things are not. A white person can get all of the love in the world. I still see Lynch’s legacy is going strong.

The Posts say Thandies Shocked At A Black Angelina.

Im Shocked too! You All are giving Angelina a pass, but BRAD WAS GOING TO CAST JENNIFER ANNISTON first. Whichever white woman he was with he was going to cast. Angelina is no blacker than Jennifer Anniston! Most WHITE AMERICANS HAVE INDIAN blood. As a lot of black americans. THERE WAS A LOT OF RAPE GOING ON! I know many white people who have features that could qualify them to look exotic.

So Angela adopted a black child, and she looks a little exotic ok has 1/4 Native American….how does that qualify her over thousands of actresses who fit the description . It doesnt! She gets the role because she is snuggling with the producer! Sharing bedsheet with Brad and now their the Black mans Saviors! Please they are willing to “paint” angelina?

Historically black actresses were DEMEANED by getting denoed roles overe their white counterparts. This is no different. Angelina is a white woman people! This outrages Thespians and others who understand that our people fought for certain things and it is shameful to act as if you are RESCUING our people yet you literally take actresses of African decent back 40 years! I said African decent because Marianne pearl is of African decent. Whether she is European, Latin, Korean, or American she still is a decendent of Africa!

POINT BLANK - Angelina is white and so is ANISTON, Brad was going to cast a white woman and “PAINT” her regardless. THis disregard for the struggle black woman have had is LUDACRIS

What is also LUDACRIS is the comparisons of Black and White actresses. THEY DO NOT GET OFFERED the same roles. They rarely get grandeur heroic roles in big budget movies. They dont get offered the OSCAR ROLES!!!!!! We have come a long way, HOWEVER this is still a slap in the face.

Many black actresses have had things to say about this issue. Not just Thandie .of course she was singled out for obvious reasons! She is shocked a white woman has the Nerve to paint her face black! Adopting a black child and looking exotic dont give you a pass to insult our ancestors and those struggling today! Jennifer is just as white and why is is different? Its not!

Two wrongs dont make a right so please stop with the white checks and other races have played whites! HISTORICALLY RACISM HAS A PRECEDENCE AND IT WAS ALWAYS THE OTHER WAY AROUND that is why people have a problem. So you saying I dont see what the big deal is, the big deal is She is insulting a lot of Blacks!!!!

And please with the Thandie has a white husband. Half of the black men in Hollywood are with WHITE WOMEN. Matte of fact in Hollywood black men usually are more accepting of white women over black women. I mean the real city and surrounding areas! MAkes a sister wanna head East!

Marianne Pearl is not Native American.

And the Pitts came to her with money for her story that few black people have the means to do or starpower.

I have no problem with jolie playing the role. My problem lies in the changing of the skin color. thats really the issue. putting on the black face is insulting

Thandie Newton could give a damn about the racial aspects of anything. If she could “break through” in Hollywood, she’d never play any roles with even a remote aspect of racial identity ever again. She’s pissed because she lost out to Jolie (as if there was even a competition) and now she wants to play the “race card”, lol. If you’re real, then be real. Don’t mention race when it’s convenient because then you really are playing the race card. For the people talking about the “opportunities” in Hollywood for black actresses, where are they? Do you really think that a major Hollywood studio will pick an Angela Bassett or Regina King (2 excellent actresses) over a Julia Roberts or any one of the dozens of young, non-talented, caucasian starlets that they groom to replace non-talented, old heifers like Julia Roberts. Lets be real, a role for a black woman in a major motion picture (an oxymoron) has to be purposefully written for one. That’s not going to happen in an industry that looks at receipts. You have to sell yourself; either with talent or your ass like Halle Berry in “Monster’s Ball”. Sorry Thandie, lol.

I think that Halle Berry playing a white woman in a movie is a real step up by Hollywood standards.

White women have been playing non-white characters for decades in movies (i.e. Elizabeth Taylor in “Cleopatra” and Natalie Wood in “West Side Story”)

There have been white women who have played blacks, Asians, Hispanics, Native Americans, etc., etc., etc. in films.

So, Angelina Jolie playing this role is nothing new.

The fact of the matter is that there won’t be too many white actresses losing sleep over the role that Halle Berry got, but there will be a bunch of black actresses and other minority actresses who will.

There are a handful of non-white actresses that we can count on both hands already.

Having Angelina play this role is just another sign that there is no progress being made in Hollywood.

I mean, we would like to think that it’s all about being a good actress, but it’s not.

The movie industry is very strategic. The higher-ups know who they want, and don’t want to be, on the big screen.

#54, I feel ya, but the issue is not so much about Thandie. The issue is should White woman get a pass to play a black woman in a movie. And I say no….and I think the same about black woman playing white women. I have no idea what it’s like to be a white woman in America, only fictionalized ideals, nothing real because I ain’t white. Acting is about really feeling the character. If you never had to live day to day and deal with the racial prejudices as a black woman tell me how in the hell you gonna be able to recap those emotions, if it’s not real to you. It can only be imaginary, which is fake. I think the same thing of a teenager playing the role of a 40 year old mother. There is not enough life expereince for a non-mother adolescent to know what it is like to be parent in their 40’s? I can go on and on, but Hollywood has stooped to another low. The next thing you see will be NO black actresses cast for roles. That is the standard they are setting. And Halle is a fraud too…..

Yes angelina is a great actress, my PROBLEM with this situation is that BLACK ACTRESSES ARENT GIVEN ROLES IN HOLLYWOOD! IT IS INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT FOR THEM TO GET JOBS, EVEN IF THEY ARE FAR MORE TALENTED THAN A WHITE “ACTRESS” WHO CANT EVEN ACT!

This is why halle was so exstatic to win a friggin oscar, she had been turned down so many times because she was too “black to play a role”. Angelina has roles/job opportunities through the roof, whilst someone like thandie or angela basset dosnt! Angela basset for example is an INCREDIBLE actress but noone even knows of her! WHY SHOULD A “WHITE” WOMAN PLAY THE ROLE OFA BLACK/MIXED WOMAN WHEN THERE ARE PLENTY OF BLACK/MIXED ACTRESSES WHO COULD PLAY THE ROLE BETTER!

are u telling me that a white person could live, play, feel, understand and ACT ure life better than any black person could-my answer is NO.

Why is angelina black/ethnic when she wants to be? ticks me off cus most of the time the media categorise her as white-not MIXED.

i think thandie handed the question perfectly, like a mature lady, i would have said exactly the same thing.

plus thandi and marianne should be regarded as black because their mothers are, thats how i see it.

I haven’t read enough about this but as far as I’ve learned, the real life woman is a mixed race woman- part Latin at that. She definitely looks multi racial to me so if she gave Angelina her blessings and feels that actress looks more simillar to her than, for example, Thandie, then it shouldn’t be such a problem. I KNOW others have, like me, felt like Angelina Jolie is mixed with something. My always thought was that she’s looks kind of latina.

Not that i’m condoning it but is it any suprise that black actresses don’t have leading roles in mainstream movies?

If an actress or an actor for that matter presents her resume to a casting director and its full of roles in movies such as soul plane, beauty shop, the friday after next why would they consider them for a serious role in a mainstream film?

Think of it in terms of the real world would an employer hire someone as a CEO of a multinational company when the only experience they had was as a fast food employee? No and no one would expect them to so theorectically why should it be any different in the movie industry?

I think that people are always talking about, people need to stop judging color and the in the same breathe when this rule works in the favor of a white person its hell to pay. Angelina can act her ass off, and think she will portryay this role respectfully and well. As for #105 just because someone is black doesn’t mean that they can understand or portray what you’ve been through. Yes as black people we do have a connection, but at the same time you can’t say that other ppl from other races can’t relate. Nobody truly knows what Angelina been through. I could understand if she was being offensive or disrespectful to ppl of color, but thats not the case. Obviously Marriane Pearl takes her life and her story seriously, so she picked who she felt would play the role the way she felt it should be played. As for the situation in hollywood and black actors/actresses yes is messed up that more African- Americans don’t get major roles because there are alot of great African-American actors/actressess, and they should be able to show their talent, and get acknowledged accordingly. But with that said is every role that portrays a black or mixed person supposed to be played by a black person or mixed person, thats like doing the same thing hollywood does by only hiring white ppl to play white roles instead of opening up and realizing that what #17 said is true the point of acting is to play something or someone outside of yourself. Not to only play what you are. Instead criticizing angelina people should use this to say, hey see we are more than our color we can play any roles we want, because acting is just that “acting”.

116.

So if Jennifer Aniston, who was ORIGIONALLY supposed to play this role played it, would everyone be fine w/ seeing her in black face?

Least we forget this is nothing new. Hollywood has a history of white actors dressed in blackface playing black people.

And can we please stop w/ the Angelina’s 1/4 Native American. Well so am I, so i guess I should’ve been cast in the New World!? Since when has Angelina been considered anything but a white woman?

As I said If Color is not important why go through the trouble of putting her in black face? Why not just let her play the role as is, the way halle is doing or for that matter have an asian actress play her? We’re all the same right? If race is not important as people would like to pretend, than why go through this trouble to make her race a part of the movie at all?

#99 Elizabeth Taylor and Cleopatra are both white. Cleopatra was a Macedonian. She was NOT a native Egyptians or Native Egyptian of mixed ancestry either.

The issue for me is black-face. If you have to darken your skin up to play the role then maybe you shouldn’t play the part. Heck how many parts are there for blacks let alone mixed raced individuals? If white people can tan their skin, throw on a kinky haired wig, give a nose prosthetic then why the hell would any director cast a black/mixed person for a role where the character is supposed to be black/mixed? You have to look at the bigger picture.

I find it insulting to our history and it will only lead to more problems down the line. We only make up 12% of the population. There aren’t many of us to play the roles and there are even less roles for us.

Oh and it other white celeb PR news Madonna wants to adopt child from Africa. PR stock rises!!

Angelina’s mother was part Native American, but she was also French.

And of course we all know that her father is Jon Voight.

But, that doesn’t exclude the fact that there are plenty of Black actresses, and other minority actresses that don’t get the opportunity to play too many roles in film.

Most roles are already written for white woman. It is rare when you can get directors and studios to change their minds and the role to a black woman.
(i.e. Halle Berry in “Gothika”, Mo’Nique in “Shadowboxer”, etc., etc., etc.)

So, now that we have a role that is actually about a black/mixed race woman, and they still end up giving it to a non-black actress?

No, I’m sorry, but that’s not right.

I can’t believe some of you all’s comments. Some of you all need to be seriously educated about the history of film and blackface. It is disturbing to see a white actor/actress portray a person of color by putting on dark makeup or paint and wearing a kinky/curly wig when there are so many people of color struggling to find a role. Both of my grandparents were actors and so maybe because I’ve heard about their struggles in Hollywood, this is an issue for me. They went through a lot and so if you knew or understood the struggles that a lot of people of color had to endure, this would be more of an issue for you. And please stop with the Halle Berry comparisons- it is not the same thing! Halle will not be in white face w/ straight hair, she will be her brown self in the movie. It is based off of a white woman’s story, but she will not be in white face. If color wasn’t a big part of the movie, or if it was ‘blindcasting’, why do they have to darken Angelina. I also believe that this movie will lose the fact that Daniel Pearl was married to a woman of color, which was an important aspect of his life. Sure, Mrs. Pearl is part white, but she is still seen as being a woman of color. The fact that it was a woman of color that loved and supported this man will be erased–no matter how much they choose to darken Angelina. And because he was married to her, it makes his reporting seem more fair and unbiased. This role would have been perfect for someone that wouldn’t have had to ‘blacken’ herself. Some of you should watch D.W. Griffith’s Birth of a Nation. Become a little more educated about what blackface is and what people of color had to go through.

I can understand Thandie being shocked. It should be “OK” that Angelina is being “blacked up” to play a black woman in a fair world. However, so many black actresses have such a hard time finding quality roles. Generally they settle for “rump shaka” or “baby daddies” type roles just to keep their face out there so they won’t be forgotten.

If Brad Pitt is directing, I understand why he gave it to her to play. If she was my woman I would do the same. However, if he wasn’t her lover and he gave it to her, I wouldn’t be “OK” with her playing a character that has to be “blacked” up. Isn’t this a modern, less hurtful black face?

BLACK ACTRESSES NEED SUPPORT. We need to support them and demand better movies with quality story lines and quality parts.

Oh well, it is what it is…Angelina is getting a “ghetto pass ticket” b/c she adopted a black child? That’s crazy, this is the same woman who destroyed a marriage, she’s a homewrecker and personally she has a lot of mental issues she needs to work on. Great, she donates money to charity-majority of celebrities do(for tax purposes or personal choice) but that doesn’t make her any special than another actress, say Thandie Newton.

This is sad. Brad has plenty of money to do what he wants and like Hollywood and most governments manipulating the truth is something he can do. Who cares if Angelina looks exotic and she adopted anAfrican child. Many white rich people have done the same. TOm Cruis and Nicole Kidman have a black son. Is it ok for Nicole Kidman to play the role and bronze her skin up???

ANNIE - Black women dont get offered roles like The Notebook, Marie Antoinette, heroines, OScar Nominating Movies. The scripts with the resumes you are talking about are written for WHITE WOMEN

Usually an actress takes the work she can get. You have to be at a certain level where you start turning down parts. And Im not saying to the point where you demean yourself. If someone could have played Reese Witherspoon in any of her movies over Soul Plane or Baby Boy they would HAVE. THOSE ROLES ARENT OFFERED TO THEM> AS YOU CAN SEE NOW WERE GOING BACK TO THE 1950′S WHEN WHITE WOMEN WERE PAINTING THERE FACES AND PLAYING BLACK WOMEN!

STOP HYPING ANGELINA! SOME PEOPLE ARE IDIOTS! BRAD WAS GOING TO CAST JENNIFER ANISTON AT FIRST!! LIKE SOMEONE SAID ABOVE NOW DEFEND JENNIFER ANNISTON FOR THE ROLE! YOU CANT ! STOP GIVING WHITE PEOPLE A PASS AND BEING HATEFUL TOWARD YOUR OWN PEOPLE.

Marianne pearl is not black she’s biracial which means a white woman or black woman or mixed raced woman could realistically play her.

Don’t any of you understand that? How is that hard to understand? Why make a big deal out of this? THE WOMAN IS NOT BLACK SHE’S BIRACIAL.

A white actress has just as much of a “right” to play the part as a black woman. That’s just the simple truth of the matter.

Now if the movie was about Oprah and they hired Jolie to play Oprah then if you wanted to bitch then fine bitch because you would have a platform and a case to make, but right now you have NOTHING.

SHES WHITE AND BLACK stop acting like there isn’t a white part in the woman because there is.

@4 Suga Buga who wrote:

“I dont see the problem, its just a movie. Nobody said anything when the Wayne’s Brother played white women!!. Its just a movie, I know Angelina will do a good job, she is a terrific actress, and thats what it should be about!!”

—————————————————-

You said you don’t know what the problem is, but let me explain it to you.

There’s not a lot of credible roles in hollywood for black actresses, so to give a excellent role like that to a white woman (not even mixed race) is disheartening to the tons of black actresses out there scrambling for a oscar-like role…a role like this could actualy catapult their career to another hemisphere, instead of the typical roles black women get in comedies, etc. So there, that’s the problem! Each year white women have roles that are oscar worthy, there doesn’t seem to be a shortage, in fact, newcomer white actresses can get an oscar worthy role quicker than a veteran black actress can; this is a problem! And if you were a actress, while you would wish Angelina well, you’d still be a little jealous that such a excellent role, which there’s a huge shortage of for black women, went to a white woman, though there are capable mixed-raced and/or black women available who could have done that role much justice…THE PROBLEM IS THAT THERE’S A LOT OF BLACK ACTRESSES OUT LOOKING FOR THESE THIS TYPE OF ROLE - AND THESE ROLES DON’T COME AROUND EVERY DAY, THEY ARE EXTREMELY EXTREMELY RARE - SO WHEN THERE’S A STORY LINE THAT REQUIRES A BLACK FEMALE ACTRESS, TO GIVE IT TO ANGELINA WITHOUT AUDITIONING ANY OF THESE TALENTED BLACK ACTRESSES IS LIKE A SLAP IN THE FACE! THEY WAIT THEIR WHOLE CAREERS FOR ROLES LIKE THESE, AND AS IT IS, THEY HAVE TO COMPETE AGAINST EACH OTHER FOR THESE ROLES, HALLE, THANDIE, ANGELA BASSETT, BUT TO HAVE A WHITE WOMAN COME AND JUST BE AWARDED A ROLE THAT CALLS FOR A BLACK WOMAN, I’M SORRY, I SEE THE ISSUE HERE! P.S. THIS WAS JUST DONE WITH A BLACK MAN FOR THE ROLE OF THE HERO IN THE SEPTEMBER 11TH BOMBING, THE HERO WAS ACTUALLY BLACK, BUT THEY RE-WROTE THE ROLE AND GAVE IT TO A WHITE ACTOR! DO YOU NOT SEE THE BIG PICTURE? YOU WOULD IF THIS WAS YOUR CAREER!

And as for the Wayans brothers playing “white women”, first off, those were fictious characters that they created, hardly oscar worthy roles as usual..it was a comedy! The whole joke of the film was that these two black men were made up to play white women! If there would have authenticly been white woman, then the whole scoope of the movie would not have actually been as funny and successful as it was…so sorry, in my book, don’t count! These were two black men screwing around and poking fun at the lives of “valley girls.” PLEASE PEOPLE SEE THE BIG PICTURE IN THIS!

@annie 112

I read your post and your point is taken..but now consider this: if soul plane and comedies are the only movies you can get, than that’s what’s gonna be on your resume! In a weird way, you just made my point! These actresses have to take something to stay out there and to keep going! Yet, these damn superficial comedies are all they can get, which is another reason why this particular role which was awarded to Angelina is so precious to these black actresses..p.s. just because someone does comedies don’t make them any less talented than actresses that do serious roles. Most directors can decipher this with a simple screen test.. and you never know what someone is capable of if you don’t give them a chance! Black actresses have too few good roles to just have one given away to a non-black actress…

And while i know Brad Pitt is the producer and the character requested Angelina to play this role, did you know this role was originally going to go to JENNIFER ANNISTON! Sorry, but Brad ass is wrong on this one, giving it to whomever you’re dating! This lady hung out with Brad and his family, so of course, she’d suggest Angelina, but Brad should have used discretion and said, well let’s audition some others and then you can make a decision….the role should go to the BEST actress, and while Angelina is an excellent actress, she is not the only one, and i do believe Angela Bassett, Thandie Newton, and Halle could have given her a run for her money, if not did a better job with this project.

Okay, off my soapbox.

THIS APPLIES IN ALL ASPECTS OF OUR LIVES, WHY SHOULD THE BIG SCREEN BE ANY DIFFERENT! I WAS FREAKIN SURPRISED TO SEE THAT SOME OF YOU GUYS ACTUALLY FEEL THAT WAY! HALLE BERRY WHILE SHE’S MIXED, IS CONSIDERED A BLACK ACTRESS, JASMINE GUY, WHILE SHE’S MIXED, IS CONSIDERED A BLACK ACTRESS, THANDIE NEWTON, WHILE MIXED, IS CONSIDERED A BLACK ACTRESS! yea, i mean sure they made her look similar to the actual woman but they could have done the same with thandie. Im not sure exactly how i feel about this, but I feel similar to how I felt when “Memoirs of a Geisha” came out and a large percentage of the cast was chinese (and spoke with chinese accents) that feeling of was it THAT hard to find an actor/actress of the actual nationality they were portraying. Same in Little Buddha (Keanu Reeves…c’mon there HAD to have been a better actor of at least a SIMILAR nationality out there) but honestly if Angelina is able to play the role better than others who auditioned for it and are bi-racial then i guess she should be the one to do it, but as an actor/actress when playing people of other races you can NEVER totally be accurate in how u potray that character, becuase of the years of w/e history they experienced as the race that they are, she can put makeup on and make yourself LOOK like a bi racial woman, but she’ll never TRULY be able to relate…idk its hard to take a stance on this

#133 You are a fucking ass. You used The Wayan Brothers and Dave Chappelle as a relevant analogy to this scenario? Are you fucking serious? Those were PARODIES. Not a real film to be taking seriously. And in any event, The Wayan’s character in “White Chicks” WERE BLACK MEN. FBI Agents. They may have went undercover as White women, but that doesnt mean that the characters themselves are White Women, being played by Black actors.

Reverse racism? There is so such thing as reverse
racism. You are not only than implying that the definition of racism means Whites who are prejudice against Blacks”, but Black and White are the only two races that exist.

#150 - Jennifer Aniston was the first and original choice to play this character. Does she look “exactly like her”? LOL. I’m positive no one would be making excuses for Aniston, if this was news a fews ago years ago when she had the part.

All this talk about white women not knowing the struggle of black women and vice versa would be relevant if the movie were about race and struggle. It is not. It is about a woman who lost her husband in a tragic & public way.

If they were making a movie about Rosa Parks’ life and asked Julia Roberts to play her then yes all of this heat would be right on. However, it is not that kind of movie.

Get over it.

LOL @ my thoughts earlier—I was seriously tripping—- Bill, plz forgive my crazy comment–dont know where that one came from…..I apologize

Also, yes yes yes Thandie did play a white woman in the movie Crash (I remember the line when she and Terence Howard were pulled over and she said something to the matter of “What’s the matter….you just couldnt stand to see a white woman with a blk man?”

Heck, I thought she was white then (initially, I thought she was black, but when I heard that line, I just assumed that my prior assumption was incorrect…lol)

Also, the media could have chopped up her response to get what they wanted, if anything at all.

Normally, when you cut someone’s words short, you are supposed to use “…” without these, it makes the sentence/words seem coherent….but even with them you can change the mneaning of someone’s words.

Example: I don’t believe that I could have played the role better yet. I just have to wait and see what the turnout is.

Media: “I…believe that I could have played the role better…” “I just have to…see what the turnout is”

By the time it gets to the upteenth source: I believe I could have played the role better, on I [saw] what the turnout [was]“….s
See the difference…journalism is amazing, but overly-quoted info can become mis-quoted by the time it reaches the public eye/ear.

They knew the cash would roll in with Angelina in that role. The story isn’t that interesting anyway, and with Thandie in the role, that shit would’ve gone straight to DVD.

Everyone thinks Thandie should’ve got the part basically because of her looks. If they based it on her acting skills….she didn’t deserve the job.

Maybe some good black actresses were overlooked, maybe no good black actresses auditioned, who knows.

And as far as Brad putting her on…..who cares. When you get in a position to include your family members or friends in your sucess it’s only right to do so. We do it all the time.

Too many Black people have opened doors for their family & friends and no one seemed to care then, but now that Brad has “looked out” for his girl, its an issue.

Wow some of you people are crazy! Don’t you see what’s going on here?

Why is Angelina Jolie considered a great actress? Because she’s had the OPPOURUNTIY to display her talent. How many actors and actress of colors have had the OPPOURUTUNITY to display their range…. Very few. You know why? Because the ROLES DO NOT EXIST FOR THEM!

We say things like “color shouldn’t matter” because it makes us feel good, but it DOES. Movie studios are always weary of putting an actor of color in a lead role of any movie (unless you’re a halle or denzel), so much so, that when presented with a TRUE LIFE STORY based on a woman of color, they STILL find it necessary to cast a white person.

And by the way. Are we so comfortable w/ race now that we find black face okay? As someone said earlier. Halle is playing her role as is. Angie is in blackface. This is the ultimate INSULT. How arrogant can you be to think that you can paint a white woman’s face and make her biracial. As someone said earlier, they were going to use Jennifer Aniston first! Is that okay too? This just further displays their arrogance.

169.

Thandie did not play a white woman in crash. She says that because from far the police officer might have assumed she was white until she was pulled over. If you see the scene where her and Terrance argue over their blackness you would see that they’re both supposed to be very fair skinned black people as they are in real life.

How many of ya’ll who wanted a black actress to play the part were actually going to go see this anyway?

If they would’ve selected Alfre Woodard or Angela Bassett (who I love & highly respect as actresses)as some of you have suggested, they would’ve had to lighten their skin to make them visually similar to Marianne. Would you turn around and accuse these sistas of selling out or going “white faced”?

As usual on this site, some of you are determined to not see the damn point. I don’t recall Thandie saying anything negative about Angelina HOlie. I believe that her statement was made in relation to the fact that it’s no secret black women actresses don’t get a lot of starring roles. As I’m sure with other “black” actresses, like Halle Berry,Angela Basset, etc., probably were thinking the exact same thing. It’s the principal.

“Hollywood” were influences on this Pearl lady’s choice., not the fact that Angelina was the better actress. “Her husband” are the two key words, he knew good and damn well he could not have given this part to an ex lover over the woman that broked up his marriage…who’s behind he’s been kissing for last past 2 years.

If you gave black women more starring roles that they could relate to instead of “whiting them up” to fit your “perceptions of a great actress” then Ms.Pearl would not have felt compelled to choose Angelina. She would have actually chose a biracial actress, (black and white). But she had to go with the “name” that ‘might’ bring more people to the theatre and I did say might.

Why are we always trying to make “black women” appear bitter when they speak out on things that they differ with? Do you actually believe that white actresses like Nicole Kidman,Demi Moore, etc…would be pleased if they made up a black actress to play Marylin Monroe, etc? They’d voice their opinions as well and wouldn’t nobody have jack shyt to say about it. So PLEAZZ, already with the comments that “she needs to get over it and move on”… some of you will stop at nothing to make this an issue it is not. It is not about black people getting upset over a role, It’s about the struggles that black men and women have in Hollywood period when it comes to acting and getting great roles., POINT BLANK!!

It is also an insult on those women’s part when someone who is bi-racial chooses a white woman to protray her all based on a NAME. Just goes to show you how some of us really are; when it gets right down to it we do not have each other’s back. But like some of you have said, “it’s a business and about making that money”. So each his own.

Why are we so judgemental of our own yet quick to give others a pass? Angelina is not the only white person to adopt a child. My aunt adopted three. Three black children who would have otherwise had no future. And while my aunt raises my cousins in a positive healthy environment, she is able to teach them about their ancestors and the struggle. Sadly so many of us are lost, just like monica’s song said “SO GONE!”

I’m not so neccessarily “offended” by a none-black woman playing the part of a black/mixed person. But I do feel that there are some many talented & racially mixed women actors to choose from it would’ve been an immpressive as well as unprecedented action on the film company’s part to make a concerted effort to cast the more accurate/authentic actor…

I have never heard of Thandie till now, the point of making a movie is two fold, if it this type of story it is to get the story out and inform the public. Number two is that they want to make money. Pitt bought the rights to this movie a while a go. Jolie is a strong actress with great draw. The talk about black face is just rediculous. It appears to me she had a fake tan sprayed on her. Hollywood celebs do this all the time. It is far from being in “blackface”. People please…….Thandie you cannot have it both ways you cant make the accusation and then turn around and say you are not passing judgement you will wait and see. You got the ball rolling hon, you brought this to a whole different level a low one. By the way I am a black woman and I dare anyone to doubt my pride in being black. I marched for civil rights and the whole nine yards. This horse is dead people get off of it. Not everything that is done is because of race. They chose the person Pearls family and Pitt wanted. Finshed.

I think this all is no big deal. It’s just a movie. A movie that most people will forget about. Why be surprised and outraged that a “so-called” white woman is chosen for a mixed-race role? This is the way Hollywood has always been and will always be until people of color start seriously getting involved. The problem is we keep waiting for white people to be nice and give us crumbs.

I think Angelina cast herself in this movie. You know she controls Brad. I just don’t think Brad Pitt’s smart enough to come up with a movie idea. I also think that if he were not getting some from Angelina, he would have never set foot in Africa.

As for the movie…bleh. It a movie about an idiot that got his head cut off. He should have stay his stupid butt home. What kind of fool goes loitering around in a war zone? Up to no good. Got in the way.
If he were Black or Latino, we wouldn’t have even heard about the incident. God takes care of fools and children. God said enough is enough and took this fool back home.

I just don’t think the whole thing is movie worthy.

I know it sounds cruel, and I apologize if it is, but hey, blame PMS. PMS causes unfiltered truthfulness in women; and some men.

Well to #177 clearly if you have to “research” it, it’s not an open problem to the public. Yes I’m sure that Native Americans have been upset by it, they probably get it the worst but my point is that it’s a double standard for us not to care when it happens to other people and all of sudden start to care when it pertains to black people. We are all “people”, and should call out when we see wrong no matter what the race. So I don’t see any justice by being upset over this when the majority of us feel contempt with watching Mexicans play Native Americans.

Okay, what the hell? Thandie did NOT play a White woman in Crash, we’re you guys even paying attention when you watched the movie? Wow.

Reply to #158: Two wrongs dont make a right. I dont think its justifyable to bring up those “Well nobody says anything when…” analogies because you’re just avoiding the problem, not furthering the argument. (And big ups to #186’s last reply post). How many times have Native Americans been portrayed in cinema PERIOD? How many full blood Native Americans exist PERIOD? (Now take that amount, and tell me how many of them are actors and actresses? Now take that amount, and tell me which one of them are some what famous?) Think about those questions carefully. I mean, really…

185 Labressa,

Just to start off Brad Pitt isn’t even close to being dumb. The man runs his own production company, just like Spike and has been raking in the cash with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Departed and Running with Scissors which is coming out in a couple weeks. Please Lord let me be so dumb so that I can be worth $100 million cash, not counting a production company, 3 mansions, umpteen cars, bikes and two planes.

Also, I just want to point out that so many of you keep bringing up Jennifer Aniston. She was NEVER going to play this role. She has said so herself in print interviews and Brad said it during a tv interview while he and Jen were still married. The tabloids made that story up to sell magazines. Don’t believe everything you read.

Finally, Mariane Pearl who wrote her own memoir and sold it to Brad, had final say on casting. These are the facts. She chose Angelina. Since its Mariane’s story then she can choose Kermit the Frog if she wants.
And I for one will see this movie because of the story. I would have paid to see the movie if Halle were cast, again for the story. Its about a wife’s search for her kidnapped husband. Their love story and ultimately his death and her survival.

I always thought Angelina was mixed anyways lol but I mean its called acting Im sure its a lot of lesbians who would prefer a lesbian to portray them in movies but sometimes there are straight ACTORS who portray them instead..It ACTING and plus she looks very cute :)

I love Thandie Newton. She’s one of my most favorite actresses.

This quote is probably not real. The magazine it’s quoted from is a British tabloid, so please take everything quoted with a grain of salt. Tabloids do nothing but distort news. Thandie Newton sounded very neutral in the comments anyway, but really, the quotes come from a tabloid and most celebrities don’t go to tabloids to talk about things. Tabloids make things up.

Marianne chose or agreed on Angelina so I’m over it.

Brad Pitt isn’t a dumb man. What makes a man smart these days if he’s dumb?

Well, whether its politically correct I’m stepping outside the modern trend of racial bounds or the lack thereof and the “we are the world cultural” advancement” the house niggaz of this generation are proclaiming I’m going to say it anyway.

Its offensive that a role portraying a woman of mixed heritage did not go to a woman of mixed heritage, but rather a “foreign, european, whatever she is” female. The hispanic community gets up in arms when a puerto rican actress portrays a mexican pop artist (JLO as Selena) and its funny no one in their culture tells them their wrong for feeling that disparity or having issue with it. But then again, that’s what happens when you HAVE culture and cultural pride rather than trying downplay your blackness as is the trend for most of us today.

I’m especially concerned about this type of move and its pending ramifications in a day like today where the only images of women of color are booty shaking body parts with no character or humanity.

To the person who commented on Halle Berry playing a role as a white woman and then mentioned the role is one of a mixed woman, and that they should have picked a mixed woman, don’t know what Halle you’re referring to but Mrs. Berry IS mixed. Her MOTHER is a caucasian woman. Thus it fits that she would play a mulatto role. But in our efforts to be politically correct to the white masses we fail to research BEFORE we comment.

Back to my original rant. Black women are being faded completely out of hollywood presence and black women are the biggest supporters of this phenomenon. We just don’t care about anything. We criticize anybody with a different perception than the white majority status quo. Well I’ll take the criticism.

This not about Jolie being a better actress. This is about creating buzz built off the already sensitive subject of black women’s absence in hollywood. They don’t care if the buzz is positive or negative as long as it gets the movie’s name out and either incites or enrages.

We as black people are so content to shuck and jive and dance for massa as long as we are saying the right things, appearing NOT to be reverse racist by accepting every culture, every stereo type and every discrimination promoted against us today in the name of coming off as being open minded.

We’re no longer black, we’re everything but. Black men and media promote us in the most horrid and stereotypical lights and we just shrug shoulders and say so what because we don’t want to ruffle feathers or appear to be the angry, insecure stereotype. Some of us are totally disconnected from culture and our ties to black community. Most of this generation has bought the bull crap lie that there is no race…

Its unfortunate the no-race thing only works in one direction. If there were no race and it were about the better actresses Nia Long, Angela Basset, Alfre Woodard, and the plethora of other black female actresses would be cast in equal part. But ask them their experiences with hollywood and how a move like this affects their careers. I know, Nia was just in a movie. That’ll be the response. You’re right, she was. Playing the same stereotypical role sisters are ALWAYS given. Rolls of depth, that showcase a black woman’s humanity and character are far and few in between for sisters…

To all of you all hailing this move and shrugging it off as NO BIG DEAL, I hope none of you have aspirations to make it into hollywood because things like this ought to tell you there’s no longer a space for a black female presence in hollywood.

And the same sisters shrugging their shoulders or dogging this black female actress who simply “commented” on her shock ought to be the same ones who have nothing to say when more instances like the Imus incident and the worse racism that we’re going to face in days to come occur.

When the condition in Hollywood and the world abroad worsens, when our images are futher distorted, our reputations further diminished by these trends that we see no harm in now, when our aspirations further lower from loving being video extras and near hoes to actual hoes continues to grow…when the only room in hollywood and america for us to to portray or actually BE whores, sluts and doormats, don’t say a word or rally or complain. REMEMBER, you’re the politically correct one who didn’t see how little foxes like this destroyed the vine of our presence in hollywood or our reputations in society.!

@129…standing ovation and bravo…at least I’m not the only one whit this perspective. These are some shucking and jiving, butt kissing, “massa” loving, house nigga mentalities running rampant through our culture and this ignorant generation. We don’t see anything wrong with anything. Nothing has an affect, nothing has a political message. its all about pimps up and hoes down, being hoes, who can curse the loudest and be the most ignorant. Who can steal whose man. And we wonder why we’re viewed as the most despicable race on earth. We have no consciousness, no depth, we love ignorance and tap dancing for the white majority. Most of us are dying to be melded into the white majority. its okay for a white woman to teach her child to marry with his culture, but not okay for a black woman to do so because when we do we’re angry and not politically correct. its okay for white and hispanic women to replace our images in hollywood and a female actres of color who comments, simply comments on her shock is jealous, a hater, etc.

Black people are BEYOND pathetic. Oh wait, I forgot, there are no black people anymore…we’re black, white, asian, and whatever other culture we strive to be to disclaim our blackness…

I bet if Lauryn Hill came out and spoke against our self-hating demises all of a sudden we’d develop a conscience and decide, “hey, something is wrong with this”…but as long as educated, culturally conscious people pay attention to and speak on these trends we’ll be viewed as backwards, racist, and too sensitive…right? I guarantee there will be much said about me statements cause I’m not a shucking and jiving “black face” darkie, stepping in toe with the racist majorities discriminatory media moves.

This move and discrimination just like it is what’s racists, but I bet I won’t get many hallelujiahs on that!

Jewell, reading your comments I’m sadden. You keep stating its only a movie and that Angelina can bring in more money. Why can she bring in more money? Because she’s white, and if not white, white enough to make the white majority comfortable. Isn’t it funny that hollywood never stresses to place dark skinned black women in mainstream movies to make the black minority feel comfortable. The fact that you’re okay with hollywood basically saying “we’ll cast a white woman here because she’ll be more acceptable to the mainstream (i.e. white female) audience” is disturbing in itself.

people are here jumping on others for complaining about a white female taking another ethnic role where a woman of color would have benefited from the OPPORTUNITY. but no one is addressing the 800lb gorilla in the living room…the fact that a white woman in the role is a better business move because white america would not turn out to see a film casting a woman of color, as is, in a role where she was married to a jewish (percievably white) male. America isn’t comfortable, once again, with casting a woman of color in a human, heartfelt role…

the fact that you further assert the white majority’s view in stating if it were about rosa or harriet you could understand the uproar, that’s ridiculous. the only time we should be bothered is when we’re not cast for out traditional darkie, slave, civil rights roles? We shouldn’t be bothered that in today’s society we MUST be bombared with images of white and hispanic women in humanistic roles while reflections of ourselves as respectable characters are fading out…

Do you all not see the trend where black women are being replaced en mass in roles in hollywood? Yet and still we ought to ignore black women being further x’d out of media limelights.

Look at the 90s and the new millenium…
In the 90s roles, at least in black films, sitcoms, etc. were available to black women. Now, Eva Mendez and longoria and Angelina Jolie get to replace us in films, in movies, alongside black males. Shows from grey’s anatomy to house promote the stereotypical black man/ other female relationship. But you rarely see them cast a woman of color beside a white or non-black man. except in shows like girlfriends where its safe because only the black audience watches the show en mass. if it were prime time for white americans you wouldn’t see it cause white women and black males can’t stand to see us alongside white men and they’d turn the television off…

these are some of the biggest hypocrisies in this country and we, as black women are just comfortable with it. that’s disturbing!
