WHITE CELEBS, BLACK CHILDREN

Tuesday, October 17, 2006

achild1.jpg achild2.jpg
Madonna and Angelina Jolie have done it, and now even Britney Spears is thinking about adopting a black child. What is up with this sudden interest in adopting black children? Most of these celebrities can’t wait to jump a plane for Africa and pick up a child at the nearest village. Why the interest? Are they really compelled with this child’s plight or are they just picking up these kids because they are the latest celebrity fashion accessory? The world may never know..

And get this, singer Wynonna Judd, is thinking about adopting a black child because of what her daughter said:

“I’d like a black sister or brother,”

Wynonna went on to say, “she’s around my singers, and most of them are black - and I say, ‘Be quiet and do your homework’. But I do think I may adopt.” [SOURCE]

AOL’s black voices, recently put up a piece about how black stars aren’t adopting black children, or getting involved in charity work, as much as white stars.

With the exception of Oprah, and a few other black stars, you don’t really here anything about them helping out the children of Africa. And many would argue, why should we help out another country, when our own isn’t doing so hot in the same area? There are millions of kids in America who need loving homes..

Whatever the case, I’m just interested in seeing how this whole thing pans out.

A lot of people who are not celebrities go to foreign countries to adopt, but they don’t have cameras following them around to catch their every move. A lot of celebs like A. Keys and Oprah do a lot for charities but also a lot of celebs don’t want to do it for TV, they do it from the heart, so why have cameras catching everything they do just for TV sake. Celebs do because they are in the public eye all the time and eventually we would have found out regardless. I personally think that it is a good thing, if you have the means and the money to adopt, who cares where the child is from as long as the child is well taken care of and provided for and loved, why should i (we) be mad at that”. I don’t think that there is a motive behind it, she been in the process of adoption for 18 months now, and that is not a decision that is made lightly. Madonna is also older and at this stage in her life she probably doesn’t want to have a biological child, instead they chose to adopt, there was a need there and that’s where she went, so what, i applaud her for doing it and i wish them the very best and hope that their family is blessed with this new addition to their home.

A happy home is a happy home, lets just hope that these stars homes are happy.

People tend to believe that money equates to happiness; when we know that some of these stars are just as fu**ed up as some of the plain ol’ citizens of the world. Take Michael Jackson for instance… huh? oh… you say those are his biological kids, well I got some oil front property in Iraq I’d like to sell you; for cheap!

And to go with my previous comments #114 and #118, I am ALL for adoption of any kind…period.

I just have a problem with the motives of some of these celebrities who are all gung ho all of a sudden to adopt these children.

My mother and my uncle were adopted and it is a BEAUTIFUL thing, I know I will adopt atleast 1 child after I conceive my own or whatever God has planned first.

I just hope these celebrities motives are right. I mean, what are they going to answer if the child may ask, why did you adopt me? I guess the TRUTH will go something like because Angelina and Brad were adopting children.

blaxdon–you are a f*cking idiot, i loved everything you said, lol. it was true and hillarious. help is help don’t matter whose doing it and we really should stop talking about we got needy kids her and all this and tha—that’s our responsiblity we have the power, resources, and opportunity to fix that sh1t even though some people don’t think that. africa on the other hand ain’t got sh1t but aids and hunger, and i don’t understand how anybody can compare the state of africa and 3 world country and there people to our situations in america. at the same time, i don’t like the way that modanna has gone about he process, angelina and all the other celebs that have done this seemed to have gone about it the in the correct way and that’s fine with me. there’s a legal adoption process for a reason and she just bypassed all that sh1t and that’s not cool. what is she in such a hurry for—was this kid supposed to be christmas present for lourdis or something?

I’m happy these kids are being placed in homes regardless of the color of their parents. My thing is, if it’s such a trend to adopt black kids, there are plenty in America that are being overlooked. But hey more power to them.

At first, I wondered about Madonna’s motives for adopting, but now, I’m just glad that another child is getting a home

Madonna automatically gets alot of spotlight wherever she goes. Even if she’d have adopted a child from England, she still would have gotten ALOT of publicity.

Brad Pitt called it “an automatic spotlight”.

Black celebs don’t have that “automatic spotlight”, (except for Oprah) so of course we’re not going to hear about what they do to support Africa.

Regardless of their motives, I’m glad that White celebs are using their “celebrity” to bring attention to IMPORTANT issues affecting the world. They’ve used their celebrity to promote someone’s clothing line, so it’s high time that they use it for something that REALLY MATTERS.

Let’s be real…if George Clooney had never gone over to Darfur to document that tragedy, CNN would have given it a 30 second clip and that would have been ALL. IMO, I think Clooney knew that, and that’s why he and his dad went over there. They knew that the American media would IGNORE it, unless some BIG CELEB brought attention to it.

It’s sad that black celebs don’t get that same kind of “automatic spotlight”, but I pray that as more blacks get into Hollywood, that it will change.

Alot of times black celebs do charity work and DO NOT want the recognition. I can understand why, BUT at the same time, I think we NEED to hear about WHAT they are doing.

black people continue to amaze me.
Funny how no one says anything about chinese babies being brought to foreign countries and how they will adapt. No, its only when someone tries to help a black baby that people try to tear them down and stop it.

Have you adopted a child from Africa and provided her wiht a loving home? Then STFU. The bottom line is that if a child who was in an orphanage now has a loving home then that is all that matters. Who cares if the child is black and has white parents or white and has black parents? Loving parents are better than no parents no matter what color they are. Of course on here one would think you would rather the child stay in the orphanage.

Madonna and Jolie are not the first white people to adopt black babies. The only reason you even freaking know about is because they are famous and the paparazzi follows their asses all over the world. The paparazzi doesn’t follow Chris Tucker because his ass only makes Rush Hour movies every six years!

I know black kids here in my city (forget Africa for a minute) who are placed in foster care and later adopted because family members dont want to take responsibility. People just didnt do this 50 and 60 years ago. We were our brothers keepers. Now we are only out for self. I would love to go and adopt some kids from Africa but I know of too many here in America who need homes. Just keepin it real.

@uhhuh 165,
We haven’t “adopted” an African baby because we don’t have 3mil to purchase one so YOU STFU, ya ignant mofo. Dumbass, that skanky ass madonna lined twelve babies up like it was a fuckin slave auction, got the pick of the litter and you say OOOHHHH oKay, long as baby got a good home missy madonna that be alright with me. As for Madonna, I’ve heard that bitch called a lot of things, but loving wasn’t one of them. Can she provide a loving home? Or a loving nanny? And by the way, they say that woman that went to pick up the baby from africa was Lourdes’s nanny. Now what the fuck does a 10 year old need with a nanny? Thats so momma has to interact with her kid as little as possible.

I hear what all of you are saying, but the truth of the matter is: We, as Black Americans, are not doing our part to take care of our own…PERIOD!!

I work in the state government system where I live, and just like anywhere else, guess which race has the highest number of kids in the system? Black Americans.

I am constantly outraged at what we have allowed ourselves to become and watch/hear people get mad when someone tries to make them accountable for their own actions–WHEN IS THIS GOING TO STOP? When are we going to stop being selfish and stop living by the creed “I gots to get mine”?

Do you really understand what these white celebrities are saying when they are adopting African children? They are saying: “Why should we adopt American children when Black Americans should take care of their own?”

We really COULD take care of our own, but I’m disgusted everyday when I hear black mothers or families have the absolute nerve to demand that the government give them money to take their own blood relative into their home? The money is for foster and adoptive families who foster or adopt a child. There are always exceptions to every rule, but I hear and see the absolute ruthlessness of black parents, on a daily basis, who won’t take in a relative unless they’re being paid; Who will drop their own children off to DFCS b/c “they just can’t handle a child anymore”, yet they’re still having babies. WHEN ARE WE, ONE PERSON AT A TIME, GOING TO STEP UP AND HELP OUR OWN COUNTRY? Black America….wake your behinds up!

I’m in a class about Religion, Race, and Film right now and I found this very interesting because we were currently learning about how in many films recently (Glory, Bagger vance, the Green Mild, etc.) black characters are used as angelic figures and nothing more. They are used in a way to make white people look better. These movies, and this situation (white women adopting black babies) makes the white people look good because they have sympothy for black children. It’s a sort of ploy. Anyway, a good reading on this is a writing of Toni Morrison’s called “Disturbing Nurses and the Kindness of Sharks”.

I also want to add that I am also disturbed that blacks don’t get credit for the good they do for our own community (like A Keys). This is a sad sad country we live in.

Personally I see nothing wrong with interracial adoptions, everybody deserves the chance at a better life. What i do have a problems with is that this sudden intrest in Africa comes off more as the “in” thing to do rather than genuine. In a couple of months, it’s going to be a new country and a new cause and it’s gon be like Africa what?? That’s what bothers me. I’m glad that they are concern with Africa right now and I hope those in need over there get all they can from these attention whores but what’s gon happen when they’re over Africa. That’s my problem. Hopefully this sudden interest in Africa will help make non-celebrities with less serving intentions more involved over there as well at home.

And also I don’t think ppl are trying to make this a children in american are in worst shape then african children. I think it’s more or less the fact that your goodwill needs to start at home. We need to strengthen so that they too can be in the position to help other countries. It’s kinda a slap in the face. Like how our government can go to other countries and help them build up their countries but can’t go down to New Orleans and build up something in our backyard. All because in America we are “better off” and have more opportunities, well how better off and how good are those opportunities when no one cares enough to make sure you get to a place to get them??

What’s difference between a black from carribean, Africa, America? nothing we’re all struggling, we’re all living in poverty and again according to their sources we’re all dying with Aids!!! I was really disapointed to see a comment saying that Africans sold each other because they didn’t have any thing to trade..in case you havent heard Africa is the richest continent on earth ( do your research) and furthermore what you said about the whole selling each other that is the oldest brainwashing statement ever..( do you research one more time) if you still believe that that is true you probably are not progressing in your life because you believe what they have created for you to believe. at # 44- if Africans are rapping each other and spreading Aids…Then why are there so many blacks in America living with aids?? are they rapping each other? Im soo tired about Blacks hating on blacks.. I’ve lived in africa, live in the US, have been to the carribean and one thing I can say WE ALL SHARE THE SAME STRUGGLE….WAKE UP MY PEOPLE …WAKE UP WE’VE BEEN SLEEPIN’ FOR TOO LONG

Jay is still on his Global Express World Tour, which is headed for Bangkok. He just spent several days in Africa, and he said it definitely opened his eyes.

“Incredible experience,” he said. “One I’ll never forget.”

He also had some advice for black Americans.

“The first thing I would say is you have to go home [to Africa], you have to go and understand what’s going on and embrace your people,” he said. “The second thing I would tell people is: You’re not from the ‘hood. Just stop saying that altogether. You have a wonderful life. You turn on the water, the water is there. You got AC, and you have AC in your car. You’re good. You’re not from the ‘hood. It’s mind-blowing. It just puts things in perspective when people say, ‘I had it rough coming up.’ ”

@181 ‘See told you them Africans got it fucked up over there ‘.

I had running water, I had AC in My car.I am AFRICAN, I was a refugee, born in a foreign country because my own was fighting for liberation. My mother was a fighter ( she was trained to fight), I have everything, because my parents fought for it, I received a good education, by African standards. We were not rich, neither were we corrupt, we just worked hard. Today, my mother and father raise money and clothing’( and whatever else they can) for AIDS orphans in my country. What has she taught me?, When you can help, then help even if its a little. I have no problem with people wanting to help in Africa, but please stop thinking that EVERYTHING IS SO FUCKED UP, coz it aint. There are places, yes thats true.

However, there are many Africans that do help on our Continent, these selfless people also do not get the recognition that Celebs do, but you know what? THAT DONT STOP THEM FROM HELPING EITHER!!!!!!!!!!!! So what if black celebs dont get recognation, not everything in the world shoud be about recognisition.

I am most proud of this topic here on your site. It seems the closest discussion to an academic and social problem. Finally the blog goes deeper and I bet you had no idea what kind of discussion you created here.

It was absolutely beautiful hearing people vent about foster kids needing adoption and also seeing that people can see through the self-promotion antic going on with White people adopting.

We have bigger issues though in Africa with people needing to be on contraception when they can’t aford to even take care of themselves. Sex is a stress reliever and a chance for two souls to connect and exchange. That does not necessarily mean everyone should carry a baby to term and for the most part, even get pregnant. Contraception has not reached these regions of Africa. And understanding to not have a baby because they are poor for some reason goes past the reality that condoms are not in their villages nor is birth control. I don’t think they all want to have children but places all over the world don’tknow or have access to what we know in knowledge that we can control population growth and poverty by using a condom or contraception.

We take for granted that we know this information and have access to even having an abortion that is not a back-alley way that could kill us. We are way more advanced than so many places in the world.

It’s obvious that Angelina didn’t adopt for self-promotion. When she adopted a few years ago, it was not popular to get an African kid. People were getting Asian and Russian kids at the time. It does seem that people may want to emulate her and those are her Hollywood peers. We have to remember that celebrities have more intense issues than us because their celebrity compounds their neurosis.

I think as it goes she was made an ambassador at the UN and with her work she became invested in the people she was working with in foreign countries. That seems reasonable to connect with the people and their children if they are poor and looking up to you.

Back in the 90’s, Steven Spielberg, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, and Michelle Pfeiffer all adopted Black (mixed) kids. Whoopi Goldberg joked about it and I think Sandra Bernhardt joked about it. Most of you were small and probably can’t remember this occurance. (I’m probably misspelling all their names…anyway)

That trend cooled off until Angelina started adopting and adopted a TRUELY BROWN-SKINNED BABY. See…all the others adopted a mixed child that was mixed with Black and had lighter skin. It was very obvious. Angelina on the other hand adopted a brown child. She was very bold and honestly she didn’t have to. Her popularity didn’t need a promotional boost. Think about it…a single, gorgeous fertile woman adopting when she didn’t have to.

I think that is what is cool with her.

But overall…you guys are on it. You hit the nail on the head on this one.

Black celebrities could adopt but Black celebrities are selfish for the most part and only copy their masters. I don’t think Black celebrities will readily adopt a Black child unless they are past childbearing years because it is a social stigma for us loving ourselves enough to choose someone that looks like us and is not a mixed-race breed of Black and something else. It’s sad but real.

I remember when Magic Johnson and his wife adopted a brown little girl and I remembered when Lionel Richie adopted Nicole. I felt it admiring the Johnsons’ dedication to being proud of their brown skin and I noticed Lionel Richie’s affinity for something other than someone that looked like him. And so on.

We have deep issues.

Thanks again for sliding in some SOCIOLOGY on your site.

While you all are sitting on your asses judging other people who are at least DOING SOMETHING you’ve failed to realize that two lives (YES BLACK BABIES) have been SAVED. Whoa,it is crazy to read all of this and still think my POV has anything to offer, but here goes. From what i have heard adopting in the US is really difficult, there are 3 adopted kids in my family, and my grandmother had the hardest time adopting a child that was distantly related to her! Here in france i go to immigrant language school with people from all over the world ,1 class literally every race, including 2 girls from Madagascar,an algerian man and a really wonderful young woman from Sudan.
From what she has told me, Africa needs an infrastructure to become self sufficent.
you may hate on me for saying this but America in general needs to wake up, get out of this oil war and really hold the corrupt government accountable.
that said the issue is interacial adoption… any child adopted, taken out of abject poverty is blessed.i would rather have a loving nanny than nobody, wouldn’t you
we spend like 4 billion dollars a month on this war, it saddens me to think what america’s tax money could accomplish.

The problem I have with Madonna is this child she adopted didn’t really need a new family. From what I heard is that his father put him in a orphanage and was coming back for him when he had everything together for the child. Now if Madonna really had a heart she would help this father so that he could provide for his son. So many kids their really needed a home cause they had no where else to go and out of all the children she pick him who has a dad who wants to take care of him. It’s good that these celebs are adopting kids but I believe it would be even better if they would just help the parents out so that they can keep family and the community together. I don’t if Angelina Jolie adopted child from Africa has a family but if the little girl does then I feel it’s not right to take her from her family, if Angelina could have help them get themselves together for the baby. Most of the kids in Africa are in orphanage because the parents couldn’t take care of them or aids. But if there is any family to keep together then people with money like that should help families instead of themselves.

Christina eventually wrote a book about her life called Mommy Dearest which was then turned into a movie. Just because you have money and fame doesnt mean you dont have problems. Just because youre a celebrity doesnt mean you are a good parent.

I AM SICK OF OF THIS!!!!!!!!!!
If they DONT adopt us, we complain. When they do we complain.

Yeah, Blacks are not rushing to adopt African kids. Good on Madonna for doing it.

It is one less child that is suffering. Also I hate this argument that the US has needy children first. Wiat a minute, are we no longer AFRICAN American? So African is NOT important now? Africa is in a crisis. Millions of people are dying of disease, starvation adn poverty. These are OUR people. We are lucky in America. No matter how bad we have it, Africans have it worst. ENTIRE villages of people suffering of hunger and no food for days.

I don’t care who adopts, white green purple or blue - just adopt.

The more we criticize, the less African orphans will benefit. Most people adopt Asians and not black African babies.

So people stop the madness. Stop criticizing. Let these kids have a better life. Stop it now. This child was in an orphanage for a year and now he will never starve again. Do you know what it is like to starve? If this kid was not black, would people say anything? Leave it alone people. Trend or no trend, I love that finally our African babies are being brought to light. God would approve of any person who decides to give a child a better home.

i am so tired of people black mostly going on and on about some white person adopting a black child…. when the most important thing is that a child get a good home no matter what color the person is. and speaking as a black woman married to a white man with three children …… all those black people need to get off their soap box…….. its the same thing when a black woman sees a black man with a white woman ….. they go all over the top….. if a white person chooses to give love and a home to a black child then all those stupid black men and women need to get a life….. there is no color in love or when it comes down to loving someone

Dynasty

My name is Dynasty I’m only 17 years old right now.I’m going to be a supermodel/actress/fashion designer one day.But guess what I’m a black girl and when I’m 24 or 25 I’m going to get married to an Italian man and have four children two sons and two daughters.I’m also going to adopt from vietnam, taiwan, thailand, korea, and the phlilippines.I don’t see any thing wrong with adopting internationally especially from africa because that’s where the most children need help.these celebrities like angeliana jolie are going to be in the spotlight regardless. She wanted to adopt because she loves zahara.I’m a black girl and I want to marry an Italian man and have children with him and adopt children from all over asia what’s wrong with that.Because when I adopt my children from asia I’m going to love my children and love them as much as my birth children and they will be my children.
