ZOË SALDANA COVERS JEWEL MAGAZINE

Tuesday, October 10, 2006

zj1.jpg sj8.jpg sj5.jpg
Actress, Zoe Saldana is the covergirl for the new issue of Jewel Magazine. In the article (by Carolyn Desalu) she speaks about her ethnicity, love of ballet, and why she is not into labeling… Here is a snippet:

Zoe admits that being questioned about her ethnicity annoys her. If pressed, she’ll declare herself a Blatino, a mix of African and Latin Roots, but she rather not say.

ZOË: The fact that I have to say that means I’m labeling myself. Unfortunately it’s the kind of thing that you sometimes have to share in order for people to stay connected to you. People tell me all the time, ‘I had no idea you spoke Spanish. I thought you were black.”…

To read the rest of the article, you have to pick up the magazine!!

BTW, this magazine is really good. I got a subscription after the first issue and I love it. I already posted the fashion spread they did with the past Top Model girls, but they also have other very good articles in there. Visit the website…

More ZOË pics, after the jump…

She was on one of the local morning news shows a couple weeks ago. I’d never heard of her before but I was very impressed with her. Obviously very pretty and also came across very genuine and humble. I like her.

Another thing…why is everyone dying to say they’ve got white in them anyway?? Last time I checked white folks enslaved us, made our lives a living hell, and thought of us as beneath them….having a white parent doesn’t change any of that!
By the way, My Mom is white! Like she used to say to a friend…If white women don’t want black ass babies, they need to stay off of black dicks…My Mama is real as hell.

I didn’t know she was Latina also..but, when I think about people not wanting to “label” themselves, I hear Queen (u know the movie with Halle Berry based on the book by Alex Haley, author of Roots) Anyway, the lady told Queen…even a little ity bity drop of Negro blood is too much…you are considered Black…seems like some people feel that is still true today.

#34..Kim…I am giving you a cyber hug! You are dead on the money. It’s always the ones who have issues being black that suddenly don’t like to be “labeled”…unless they’re calling themselves mixed! Don’t call me mixed…I’m not a damn dog. Dogs are mixed, not humans.

LOL #38…Tortillas and cornbread. lol
Right on #43…Boris knows who he is..he always says he’s black. His culture may be German, but he always says he’s black. I love him.
#47…You are right. I went to Jersey recently and was AMAZED at how racist the whites (Italians and Jews) are…they teach their kids that bullshit too very early.
Good point #48..it’s because there is no status in being black! It’s a setback…but our silly asses are the first ones dying to tell the world of a Latvian great grandmother….we are sad. It doesn’t matter to anyone how mixed you are…you’re black!

I don’t understand why people get mad when they’re asked what ethnicity they are…I’m all for people asking, so they can be informed..don’t assume I’m white! I’m a black woman, but I’m mixed and look a lot like Wentworth Miller…my cousin claims we were seperated at birth…but anyway…trust me when I say black is still black…Being this light skinned has given me insight into how most whites still feel/think when it comes to us…In fact, I’ve got the Department of Labor investigating a company I was recently hired/fired from…once certain folks found out I was not white those certain folks made sure life on the job was hell for me.

@82
Babes only children get involved in a child’s conversation so what does that make you? If you’re so adult about it you can go elsewhere. I’m sure you won’t be missed. Don’t be so quick to imply that one is immature when you’re surrounding yourself with the company of such said person or people.

With that being said; I like Zoe and I feel she’s very intelligent I just tend to disagree here. And after all, its not what one calls you, its what you answer to that important.

if anyone’s dark-skinned with “questionable” features like non-kinky hair, blacks feel the need to probe their ethnicity and make an issue of it. going as far as honoring the “one-drop” theory. so then folks, paula abdul MUST be black, as must be all arabs, east indians, aborigines, right? poor ms. zaldana. how dare she have “good” hair and dark skin and not admit to being black? it’s a strange love-hate relationship blacks have with themselves and others–rejection and acceptance and envy all at the same time. no wonder blacks are the most psychologically messed-up people on the face of this earth. just wait till some alien species shows up. i guarantee y’all be dropping the pointless earthly race issue.

DAMIEN! You are too funny!
*Speaking like Sam Jackson*

You’re right..society hasn’t changed…people have just learned to hide their feelings. It’s all on the inside now, as opposed to 40 years ago when a white would tell you they didn’t like your black ass.

#88….get a life. If blacks have issues with themselves, it’s from years of dealing with white folks. Don’t try and sit up here and put us down as a group. “Psychologically messed up people on Earth”. How dare you?? Most blacks don’t have to “probe” anyone’s ethnicity..we already know usually. It’s whites who’ll get in your face and ask a million questions about what you are.

As a matter of fact, Paula Abdul may be black..she’d never admit it though. We ALL come from Mother Africa. Whether it’s obvious or not.

Carrington in Houston

Tuesday, October 10, 2006 /

@ Damien…

I’ll address you point by point and not attempt to embarrass your lack of knowledge, at the end of the day, your response is yours, which means that it’s your self portrait - and nobody painted that picture except YOU!

1. “My father is mixed with 3 races to include black. My moms is black. It makes me black…why you ask? The common denominator is B-L-A-C-K!”
- My mother is black and my father is 1/2 polynesian and 1/2 puerto rican - so what’s MY common denominator since my dad ain’t black?

2. “Folk always want to be mixed with something. Why? DOes it garuantee you a place in heaven? Will you live longer? What prize do you win? NOthing! This is 2006 and damn near e’rybody is mixed with something..PERIOD.”
- What exactly does BLACK garuantee YOU, other than being ostracized, labeled, and prejudged… will being black garauntee YOU a ticket to heaven since it garaunteed you hell, here on earth?

3. ” Who actually goes around and keeps count of 5% Irish, 10% Injun 15% other shyt and 50% BLACK..seriously who does that?”
- I’ll refer you to point number 1 when I say, APPARENTLY yo DADDY does!!!! (No, seriously) CTFU

4. “If some type of genocide, slavery or holocaust were to take place again, trust me, they won’t single you out because you think you have other races in you.”
- The point you keep missing, Proud, black man, is that YOU seem to be the only one concerned with what somebody else thinks… does it really matter what a white man thinks of me? Absolutely not, no more than it matters what you think, sir.

5. ” Now if your pops gone be offended because you didn’t claim his other 10 races than another issue lies deeper within him.”
- Again, what school did you attend, that you don’t KNOW why a father would be offended that HIS child, a child HE raised chose to deny his hand in that child being here? When you make a baby with a white woman (and let’s be real here, it’s “proud” brothas like you who will bypass a fine BLACK woman to get with a trailer trash white woman just BECAUSE she’s white, so get off your bull.) but when YOUR son, decides that he’s WHITE, even though it’s APPARENT that he’s not all white, THEN you can expound on the “issue” with a father feeling the need to be validated by his seed, until then… I’ll pray for you.

6. “There are other things to think about than ‘what I’m mixed with’. Your ethnicity doesn’t DEFINE you…its the contents or your character that DEFINES YOU. E’rybody sang with me…Say it LOUD! I’m BLACK AND I’M PROUD”
- If it’s the “content of your character” that defines you… help me understand just WHY, you’re “black” and so “proud”????

Shouldn’t you be proud of the “content of your CHARACTER????” I won’t require a response, the fact that you were all over the place with your ORIGINAL post says that you speak from emotion, whether your response is completely contradictory or makes any sense is apparently, irrelevant.

I agree with Meatloaf, she’s embarassed and embarassing at the same time. How pathetic. The fact of the matter is that she, like Vin Diesel and Christina Milian, want to avoid the “black” label because they’re scared that it will cost them money and some dream role in Hollywood that they’ll never get. They gave Halle Berry an Oscar and 20 mil a picture for catching backshots from a hick and now she’s back to making duds, lol. Dream on Zoe….

I’m proud to be black, but got a blonde weave, blue contacts, or “long hair, real or imagined hanging down my back” mf’s gon’ make a BIT of difference in my life, the only people that matter in this situation is me, my mother and father, and they raised me the RIGHT way, you are just as much your father as you are your mother… and again, all of you “pro black” mf’s can deal with it, or move around!

Sad part is, the MAJORITY of you mf’s take more issue with the REALITY of someone ELSES nationality than you do with those drug dealers in your neighborhoods and SOME of your HOMES that are destroying many of our precious BLACK communities!

You want to take a stand - there’s one for you.

Well well well…Bravo Carrington. My pops don’t keep count actually and if he did I’d admit to his ignorance. When stating my parents common denominator, I was speaking in terms of my interpretation as BLACK not yours. So if you don’t have black in you all then cool. I don’t care what you got in ya cuz “what you eat don’t make me shit” ya feel me. I never actually said being Black promises me anything. You’re blatanly offended, however, that not being “throughbred” you’re not promised anything as well. You, Carrington is obviously concerned what others think, hence the the comment about ya daddy might get offended and saying, “well, who the fuck am I”? Another thing dude or dudette or whichever you wish to be today, My girl is Black so you’ve guessed wrong…again. Your dude must’ve left you for a white woman and made you a little bitter…is that the reason for that white girl comment? Your next wrong guess…I’m sterile so no soldiers here but not to worry for I’m not offended. I won’t go into an all out brawl or draw up an excessive dialogue such as yourself because its really pointless (how long did it take you to drum that up BTW) but I will say this, with the attitude you have, PLEASE DON’T PRAY FOR ME. It’s really fucking sad that you view being Black that way, really fucking sad. I feel you embody the way many mixed people have felt, and you’re entitled to your feelings, but I have theory that if mixed people (those mized with Black and something(s) else) and their non-Black parents fought as hard for equality in this country as Black Americans have, if they got over their bullshit inferiority complexes that, in my opinion, you certainly manifest, if they would stop licking the white man’s asshole and perpetuating the imposition of his standard of beauty on our people, we would be so more advanced as a race. You’re an embarrassment. You don’t wanna be called Black, GOOD!!! WE DON’T WANT YOU, YA LIL WHINY BASTARD! YOU’RE NOT WORTHY TO BE BLACK!!! TURN YOUR RACE CARD IN NOW!!! I was reading further up after I posted. Wow last time I looked my husband has a heart eyes a brain fingers toes wow so do I. Because we are human beings. We all cry we all laugh we all see and hear things. The sooner we all stop categorising our ethnicity and trying to prove one is better than the other or means more than the other the sooner we can realise that we should all be proud of who we are as a person, not a colour, or race, or religion. Take responsibility for ourselves and our views and opinions on the world. Open our hearts to people not colour. Shit Im white and was raised on motown and soul but at the end of the day what does that really matter. IT DOESNT. I love my husband for his heart his laugh his smile his sense of humour the way he loves me his family and my family. So whatever people say behind our backs or to our face about us being “interracial” is like water off a ducks back to me. There are bitches, sluts, hos, playas, cheaters, abusers, ugly, pretty, rich, poor, selfish, greedy, giving, generous people in EVERY SINGLE COUNTRY OF THE WORLD WHICH LAST TIME I LOOKED HAD EVERY TYPE OF RACE AND RELIGION LIVING IN IT. If you want to lose sleep over it and have hate in your heart and mind then good for you. No intention of offending or directly respondin to anyone here. Just my own point of view

I think that the issue people may have is that in Hollywood, there aren’t many Hispanic or Black actors(actually getting work) so when someone from those cultures has success, people feel proud and want to identify with them. People want to see themselves mirrored on television/big screen. It’s hard to identify and feel proud that you are being represented on television when the actor(-tress) doesn’t want to “label” themselves. It comes off to the people in that particular culture as them being ashamed of who they are.

On the flipside, I can understand where she is coming from, if not putting a “label” on herself is getting her more roles. Maybe if she was opening about being Latina, she wouldn’t have got the Black-American role in DRUMLINE. She’s gotta eat but at what price? Would y’all be willing to be quiet about being black, white, hispanic, etc…if it would get you more roles/work?

Damn, Our people are really fucked up! This topic is my biggest pet peeve. I listened to this sista the other day with the most beautiful ebony skin talk about her 15+ ethnicities. The fact is…if you are not African (i.e. mom and dad can clearly define the country/Village/tribe of origin) let’s just call you black/African American.

Every black person (with ancestry tied to slavery) got a little something in them. I hate when people mention 15 other ethnicities (that may or may not be a part of their heritage) before they will say that their black. What is up with the self-hatred? Be OK with yourself first. No one cares if your great grandmother was half Irish and part Cherokee! Leave that shit alone. What is wrong with just being black? Is there something inherently wrong with that? Does it validate you as a person to try to identify with another race?

Who cares? Certainly not white people…they’re definitely not trying to claim any of us!

not be ignorant- to those who have a latin background- but being latino is NOT a race, original races such as the the AFRICAN, ASIAN/INDIAN, CAUCASIAN, AUSTRAILIAN-ABORIGINES-(THEY ARE NOT AFRICAN),AMERICAN INDIAN(WHICH IS FOUND TO BE RELATED TO ASIANS). LATINOS IS A MIXTURE OF THREE RACES BLACK, INDIAN, AND CAUCASIAN. SO A PERSON SAYING THEY ARE LATIN DOES NOT DICTATE THAT THEY ARE NOT BLACK OR WHITE. I HAVE NOTICED THAT MANY LATINOS DENY THEIR AFRICAN ROOTS DESPITE THEIR OBVIOUS AFRICAN FEATURES. I HAVE NOTICED THAT PANAMANIANS WHO ARE OF LARGELY OF AFRICAN ROOTS- IDENTIFY THEMSELVES AS BLACK /HOWEVER SOME GROUPS SUCH AS DOMINICANS WILL STATE THAT THEY ARE “INDIO” WHEN THEY HAVE DARK SKINNED- THE INDIANS ON THE ISLAND OF HISPANIOLA (HAITI AND DOMINICAN REP.) WERE PRACTICALLY ERADICATED BY THE EUROPEAN SETTLERS BEFORE THEY BROUGHT THE AFRICANS TO THE ISLAND. GIVEN THAT MANY DOMINICANS HAVE LARGE PERCENTAGE OF AFRICAN ROOTS AND SOME EUROPEANS ROOTS ALSO. BASICALLY LANGUAGE AND CULTURE DOES NOT DICTATE RACE. MY GRANDFATHER SPOKE SPANISH- BUT HE WAS BLACK.
IF AN AFRICAN AMERICAN PERSON SPEAKS ENGLISH/ DOES THAT MAKE HIM ENGLISH
SO THEREFORE IF A PERSON THAT IS BLACK SPEAKS SPANISH- IT DOES NOT MEAN THAT THEY ARE SPANISH- MEANING FROM SPAIN OR EVEN WHITE.

To sum it all up…I think what we are saying — those of us who are obviously black and can’t use “mixed” “multi-ethnic” or 50% of this or that…is that we’re just tired of people who look just like us wanting to claim ANY OTHER ETHNICITY BUT black. At the end of the day, you are what you say yo are….but it’s funny, people just don’t seem so pressed to claim their 100 percent African-American status just as quickly as they are to claim they’re mixed. At the end of the day we are all spirit, but while we are in these physical bodies and dealing with the real world, we are what folks percieve us to be. That’s just real talk. That’s why the “Prison Break” star and Jessica Alba’s man Cash Warren (son of Michael Warren) and folks who are not easily identified as black hear all those racial slurs because folks don’t know by looking at them. I’m all for being proud of all your heritage, but let’s be real about it. Most times if black is included, folks ain’t as proud about claiming it. I applaud those unlike Vin Diesel who may not be obviously black (like Prison Break dude) who are quick to let folks know what’s up.

#117 MrsCookieNzima, are you sure that you’re not in it for that “big Zambian sausage”? I’ve seen how white women flock over to Jamaica and other islands to get they backs broke! For $200 Jamaician dollars, a young Jamaician warrior can be hired for the whole week to perform the wild services! That’s about $80 US…a real bargin!

You will see the light when your children come home one day looking at you and saying…WTF? Get back with me then and tell me about all your anthropology! You and Zambian don’t represent black or white America!

Here’s some institutional knowledge you’ll need to know about African men…they beat, mistreat and eat their women! Enjoy all that white, you only get to wear it once!

She looks black so therefore that’s what you would think. Its human nature. Some mixed race pple call themselves black and others dont. Everyone has their own reasons why. White pple may not admit to having black heritage within their blood lines because black is seen as negative. But it is true to say that black pple are quicker to say that they are mixed with white or spanish etc. Mention african heritage to some pple they usually want to dismiss it. I am light skinned my mom is light and my dad is dark and they are both jamaican’s. I know I have african ancestry and white ancestry amongst others within our family because my mother was told by her grandmother. my true heritage is african, made up of other cultures. I’m sure many pple are guilty of seeing someone and wondering what they are made up of culturally. It maybe wrong but that’s just the way it is.

Honey, you’ll be dreaming a dream w/o realization for the rest of your life….If she wants to limit herself, then let her….It’s a simple question with a simple answer: Ppl have been buzzing, what race/ethnicity are you? A: “Oh, I am black/African American (her preference), and my I have Hispanic Heritage…I consider myself Blatina”….done deal:

But, I too get very upset when ppl mistake me for an African/Jamaican, b/c Im not…and I will simply say, “No, Im black”….some ppl persist and probe deeper like “oh, but your skin is so rich/dark…I’ve never seen any ppl from here (US) w/ your skintone (Mind you, these are white ppl, mostly)”…and I’ll just say, I’m black and I AM AMERICAN….I WAS BORN HERE AND I HAVE NEVER BEEN TO AFRICAN OR THE ISLANDS,…by this point they can see that Im pissed and they think it’s okay b/c “Oh, my gf/bf is from Africa and that’s why I wanted to kno b/c they have dark skin”….STFU!!!! I AM BLACK AND IM PROUD! (Being blk isnt even good anymore for most unless ur from and Island or Africa…wtf??? My ppl my ppl….GTFOH)

PS: Zoe, Vin Diesel, Christina Milian….when you go places, ppl see a very well-groomed, well-poised NIGGER!!!! Yea, it hurts, but in the end, all you have is “us”…..when you’re hot, it’s all good, and when you’re not…they want you to take yo ass back to the hood!!! FYI: as stated b4, blk ppl can tell when someone is “mixed” usually, it’s the YT’s that want to get to the “bottom line”…why? Hmmm….Im sure some “genius” will have the answer.

Bill normally i will co-sign with what you say however in this instance i have to disagree with you. I also live in New Jersey. I am from the carribean my sister-in-laws boyfriend is white her best friends boyfriend is white and they go every where. they go clubbing to the malls and etc. no one even looks at them twice. now i know you may say that that is not the norm but they are not the only couples i have seen like that out here. i forget who made the comment on nationality…but people you do realize that nationality is where you come (i.e. Jamaican, german, etc.) from it does not determine the color of ones skin. Further more a person is entitled to call themselves whatever they choose. just because we may not think they are right does not mean they have to conform to our beliefs. in the end everyones opinion is there own because that is exactly what it is there opinion.

#131—U ANSWERED YOUR OWN QUESTION! LOL

But here are some other questions?

Are your parent’s parents white?
Are their parents white?

LOL—was this supposed to be sacrcastic, boo boo???

Skin color does NOT make you black—I knew a girl named Jamie in college and her wht dad was Maltese (sp?)…her skin was dark, yet EVERYONE KNEW SHE WAS WHITE—-skin color does NOT make you blk.wht….furthermore, you CANT POSSIBLY plead a case in which you have NONE!!!!! You just said BOTH YOUR PARENTS ARE WHITE!!!!!!! SO WTF do you mean r u BLK or WHT? SMH @ ur misguided, kind-spirited attempt! FAILED

There is a web site that you can go onto and find out what and who you are! It’s called http://www.WTFamI.com! hehe!

It saddens me that we take it for granted and forget that there are people like you who don’t know WTF they are! hehe! Lost in America!

Also, just to clear up something: I DO believe that one’s race AND ethnicity AND Nationality (they are all different things) play a huge roll in a person’s make-up, so I can understand NOT wanting to leave out an integral part of who they are….BUT when you start skewing away from questions and making up fanciful, dumbass words for your self-definition that scream “I have identity issues”, and you end up offending at least one, if not ALL of wat makes you you! IE: how wthe hell dont we know that ppl in Hispanic Boards arent raising sand about this, too?? LOL —(thruthfully they are probably just happy that ppl are more quick to embrace their Latino-ism than their Black-ism): and that is why I am not upset at Africans who declare that they are African (blk or wht) or Islanders who declare that they are Islanders…but I AM APPALLED WHEN CONVOS LIKE THIS TAKE PLACE:

RANDOM GURL: I CANT STAND BLK PPL THESE DAYS, GET ON MY DAMN NERVES, JUST DIRTY, BEGGIN’, AND IG-NANT.

ME: AREN’T YOU BLK?

RANDOM GURL: HELL NO! IM FUCKIN’ ETHIOPIAN!

ME: SO, YOU’RE NOT BLACK

RANDOM GURL: HELLZ NO! I WOULD DIE IF I WAS BLK (clearly brushing her steel wool hair and fixing her gold chain on her dark (almost purple) skin and chewing gum….she later told me that she is better than blk ppl cuz her ass was from africa and so she never identified with blk ppl)….

and the same thing happened with my sister and her (Half Jamaican, Half Black) friend…JAMIACAN IS NOT A RACE—IT IS A NATIONALITY/ETHNICITY!

also in DR they prefer the lighter shades (as in most latin countries)
i went there in Feb of this year
and most of the workers at the hotel would ask me why am im trying to get darker (by sunbathing) I have a nice complexion already ETC. (im light skin black)
aw hell im light skinDED LOL

and a few of MY DR colleaugues here at work had already told me that lighter skin is preferred
clearly some have identity issues…

i LOVEEEEEEEE being black
i dont care if i was the whitest black (yeah i know thats an oxymoronic statement)there was dammit
id say im 100% blk all day everyday!

Ok why does almost every negro in the country have to say oh I’m 50% native american and 50% black? I mean hot damn! Being a BLACK MAN or a BLACK MAN is the most beautiful gift god could ever give us. Just because you have 5% chinese does not make you any better and it doesnt make you any worse but you should just know to stay proud and black. And men I’m not gonna be attracted to you more if you say ur 20% this, or 40% this race, I’ll like you no matter what ethnicity is in your family. Look at Ne-Yo he acknowledges that he has chinese and puerto rican in his family but he doesn’t go around tellin every damn person to call him mixed, he knows he is a black man, same goes for Tyrese. And I myself have a white grandfather but he wants me to grow up as a proud strong black women not a 35% white women.

LITE BEAUTYITIT…You don’t need to be preaching to anyone. After all, you are the same one who speaks about having “good hair” and “green “eyes or whatever. You’ve got some nerve telling people to read a book when it is evident you have a lot of reading to do yourself dear. Don’t even get me started on you telling people that they need Jesus (not jesus). Dumbass.

CHOCOLAAT…Preach!! I too was taken back by that comment. It really stood out. Glad to see that someone else picked up on it. I just didn’t want to address it. I try to stay away from these discussions because people really piss me off and it is such a sensitive topic. Thanks again.

MEATLOAF…You don’t hold back. “Zambian sausage”. Lol. Seriously though, I’d be careful if I were her-black or white.
