ZOË SALDANA COVERS JEWEL MAGAZINE
Tuesday, October 10, 2006
Zoe admits that being questioned about her ethnicity annoys her. If pressed, she’ll declare herself a Blatino, a mix of African and Latin Roots, but she rather not say.
ZOË: The fact that I have to say that means I’m labeling myself. Unfortunately it’s the kind of thing that you sometimes have to share in order for people to stay connected to you. People tell me all the time, ‘I had no idea you spoke Spanish. I thought you were black.”…
To read the rest of the article, you have to pick up the magazine!!
BTW, this magazine is really good. I got a subscription after the first issue and I love it. I already posted the fashion spread they did with the past Top Model girls, but they also have other very good articles in there. Visit the website…
More ZOË pics, after the jump…

she’s an actress….Yeah many ppl dont know that there are latin ppl who are black….actually I see that most Latin ppl are black/dark skinned……but most latin ppl dont like their african roots, there’s a saying in spanish that talks about “improving the race”..meaning date light skin/white ppl to improve the race…that’s the reason most ppl are surprised when a dark skin person speaks spanish…

When are people gonna realize that black doesn’t just mean English speaking African Americans. 70% of the slaves were dropped off in South and Central America. There are a number of black people that have Latin roots as well as other roots. Black is black, whether you speak Spanish, English, or French.

Represent SUNSET1! I have a friend who has this race “issue” like Zoe. & Imma tell Zoe like I told my friend…Sorry boo boo BUT you are BLACK. If you have any doubts look in the mirror & examine your facial features and run your hair through your scalp (oh- before the Domicans blow it out! lmao!) Your ancestors came from Africa! Accept it! You are a black latino! What is wrong with that??? Your ancestors were stolen from Africa & dropped off in a Latin country- where they adopted the language/culture and intermixed with the native people- JUST LIKE AFRICAN AMERICANS did in America!

What’s up with people TELLING people who they are without knowing a damn thing about them or their history???
I, for one, come from mixed parentage, my mother is black, and my father is not; does that make me black? Absolutely NOT! Visually, you can see that there is more to me than JUST black, but the issue is the same, if ONE of my parents is black, I’m not going to deny the OTHER parent because a bunch of people who don’t know me, don’t give a shit about me now, and won’t give a shit about me in the future have decided who THEY want me to be???
If I’m standing between my mom and my dad and someone asks me, “Who are you?”, why SHOULD I say black, and leave my father standing there wondering “well who the fukk am I?”… and why should I say, “Polynesian and Puerto Rican” and leave my black mother standing there wondering, “Who the fukk am I that you CHOSE an ethnicity? And not only that, you CHOSE his?”
At the end of the day, as much as black people WANT everybody to claim BLACK over everything else, you never take in account that those people YOU”VE chosen an identity for have people who they actually CARE about to consider - so, if you mix black paint with white paint… it changes to a different tone, it may very well be a “dark” tone, but it definitely ain’t black anymore.
What’s “clueless” is people making decisions for total strangers. I KNOW that I’m not saying that I’m not a black person… I am, for all intents and purposes, but my father is just as much responsible for my being here as my mother, and that means, who HE is, is who I am.

U ARE FRUSTRATED BUT WHEN SOMEONE OF ANOTHER RACE SEES YOU THEY CALL U BLACK. PEOPLE COULD CARE LESS WHAT U ARE MIXED WITH THEY SEE BROWN SKIN AND LABEL U AS BLACK> I am ALSO mixed, most people can tell because of my complexion and hair, however others especially white or foreigners just think Im black.
I dont think Black people WANT everyone to be black, its just that because the black genes are so dominant usually, PEOPLE ARE CONSIDERED BLACK because of their skin tone.
If Zoe didnot mention she was mixed and we saw a picture of her we would consider her a Black Actress.
no one wants you to diss your other heritage, but I bet if someone didnt know u they would say “the black girl”"

And on the issue with people checking their “facial features” that’s about the dumbest shiit I’ve ever heard, since when does your FACE determine ethnicity… I have a brother with hair just as straight as any white man I’ve ever seen, with gray eyes and damn near white skin… people thought that we were adopted and NOBODY believed, or BELIEVES that we are brothers. He used to sit around white people and listen to them talk about black people and then go off on them (because they assumed that HE was white)
So if your FACE determines who you are, then my brother may very well be a white man, correct?
28.
Carrington in Houston
Tuesday, October 10, 2006 /
But you’re missing the point TOT TOT…
The issue is that, I’m not CONCERNED with what others think… and should SHE, should YOU, should I, choose one over the other BECAUSE of what white people OR black people think when they “see” us?
Those same people you’re talking about SEE a thief when they see a black man… should we accept THAT because it’s what they “see” as well?

I am kinda torn on the subject. On one hand i dont want to just leave my daddy out of my identity by not claiming I’m half white, but on the other it’s sooo much easier to just identify myself as black. When I’m wit my white friends they see me as a black girl, and when I’m wit my black friends they see me as a blck girl. And even tho i shouldnt let other people define my ethnicity, its still easier…. Oh and yall know that nigga wentworth miller from prison break did the same thing yo brotha did? Everyone from Africa to London to the Carribean who comes to America, tries to qualify themselves by being better than blacks in America! We people who are darker than blue! Read Tee’s comments on post #23 and them say it loud…I’m Black and I’m Proud!
When a foreigner comes to America, the first thing they must do is try and seperate themselves from American blacks! “Oh, I’m not black, I’m blackachickawathalicious!” hehe!
Most of them come here on “blood money” and then pretend that they are the standard and not the exception back in their country or Continent!
Well guess what?…no ones looking down on my black azz! Play the damn hand God dealt you…spades and clubs! Not diamonds and hearts! If you got it going on so well, keep yo azz at home!
Now, if you’re a “foreigner” Kammy, you got a lot of nerve having an avatar called “Nigga please”! Are you from Nigeria or Haiti or Cuba? Fess up! Prime example of Zoe’s crazy azz! Let’s talk!

I hear you litebeauty,
But I’m not going the “easy” route when it comes to who I am… whether people like it or not, I am my mother AND my father.
“THEY” can identify me how they see fit, but I am, that I am. And I’m not concerned about who doesn’t like, and or agree with it. I’m not denying the man who raised, loved and loves me to please no strangers!
And you seem to have no problem with people identifying you as “the black girl”… and that’s cool, I don’t have an issue with being called black either - but do you take offense or correct people when they call you WHITE? If so, then you have some self reflection to do, because now, it’s not about “easy” you’ve CHOSEN - and genetically, biologically, whatever you want to call it, the decision is not yours.

People will call themselves anything but black. I am black and proud. Celebrities especially always come up with the I’m mixed with this and that bullshit. If she mixed fine but if it doesnt matter why go through so much trouble saying what your mixed with. Somewhere down the line most people are mixed with something. I personally think it is pathetic that we as black people have to qualify who we are and what we are made up of. As Bill said…white people don’t sit around talking about if they are half Irish and half Italian.
I am from the Caribbean and people always try to fit me in a group…East Indian friends ask me if I am dougla (half east indian). My African American friends ask me why I have “good hair” (that in itself pisses me off…what is good hair? For me it is hair free of split ends). But more then all of that, I hate the fact that people are called out if they acknowledge what they have in them.
My ancestors may have been slaves, but they were also indentured labourers, amerindian, white etc…
I consider myself black and that is what I tell people but I have not and never will (to please any person…and I don’t give a rats ass who thinks I should) ignore my other heritage because accept it or not, I would not be me without them.

Black people are i nevery country of the world.. they can be natives of switzerland but doesn’t make them WHITE.. look at Boris Kudjoe he’s German but I’ve never heard him call himself caucasian like this bitch is trying to say she’s not “just” black. it has nothing to do with labels, it sounds to me she hates being CALLED black ( as some mixed race people do ) but yet she’s more than happy to capitalize on it and being a model for rocawear and shit… she needs to go

I think people are naturally curious about others’ ethnicities, and not just black people. Hell, people ask me all the time what my nationality is and I am not biracial, nor do I speak another language. If you are biracial and you want to name all of your ethnicities, races, or whatever, by all means go right ahead. I, myself, have asked people what their nationality is out of curiosity. But, I hate when people try to deny that they are black when that’s what they clearly are. It’s like some people would rather point out that they are 1/8th Indian than to say I’m black. Okay, somewhere down the line, we are all mixed with something. And for the record, I’m not saying that Zoe is denying that she is black, but there are a number of BLACK people with latin roots that do not recognize that they are black.

I hear white people say they are mixed with german, greek etc; However, I never hear white people say they have black blood. Why is that??? And we know some of them do. But on the flip side, a black (african american, latino etc;) will say what they are mixed with in a heart beat.

I am sick of her talking about her ethnicity. She hates to be refered to as a black woman, yet she banks off of playing a black woman. She played the daughter of Bernie Mac and his BLACK wife in “Guess Who.” She is a mess. She also needs to find something else to talk about. I am mixed with a black mama and white daddy and I am proud of what I am. I usually just say I am black but I am the product of both my parents. Zoe Saldana is an ugly, fierce-faced bitch. I don’t know her personally, but I get this vibe from her a lot that she’s one of those Black people that only wants to be around Whites. And yes, I said Black people cause that’s what the fuck she is. It KILLS me when the Blackest bitches (namely, the Blackest Dominicans) want to talk about some mixed shit. Zoe, honey, YOU A NIGGER with the ER! Truth of the matter is the vast majority of Dominicans are mixed, but our dear friend Zoe is NOT! I’ll even be so bold as to say that her ancestors were probably from HAITI!
It’s sad how Dominicans are such a self-hating people (a lot like Black Americans are, but won’t even go there). If you read about the dictatorship of Rafeal Leonidas Trujillo in that country, you’ll understand why. He’s like Hitler meets Michael Jackson. In a genocidal attempt, he slaughtered thousands of Haitians
when on of his own grandparents was Haitian. He wore make-up so he’d look more White and imposed his own issues with being Black on the entire population through propaganda, which he used to create a new Dominican identity of being a White, Catholic nation with a little Taino Indian in there, but NEVER any African! So yeah, I see why that heffa, like so many other ‘minicanos, gets in a little tizzy about being Black.
And Carrington, yeah, boo-hoo you’re mixed, boo-hoo don’t call me Black cause my whoever is whatever, get over it. You live in a country where, historically , due to concerns over property, one drop of Black blood makes you Black. Is that right? No, but that’s just the way it is, so always remember, YOU’RE A NIGGA TOO. A large number of Black Americans are mixed with all types of shit but they just get with the program. They understand how the white man is, and they too get tired of people trying to act like there’s something wrong with being Black. They too are sick of everybody wanting to be a nigga but nobody wanting to be a nigga!

Now don’t get me wrong, I know there are plenty of black professionals all over the east and west coast, but when it comes to “institutions” like businesses, marriage, employment and socialites, the lines are drawn in the sand. Just like Zoe’s trying to do! Bitch!
Bill is professional who has a good living and status, but he’ll tell you, blacks are consumers not producers! Zoe’s comments are meant to cut her from the black herd just like Jennifer Lopez and Rosie Perez did as soon as they got established!
DAND was actually quoting you Bill when he said: “…white people don’t sit around talking about if they are half Irish and half Italian.”
I’m sure Bill was telling us that we as black should make the first step and rise above the labels…but not on this day with Zoe! I get a culture shock everytime I travel the USA! If you really want to see culture shock…go north to Seattle Washington! Jungle fever like a mutha! Or, go south to the Carolinas! Red-necked like a mutha! Or go west to California! Gayer than a mutha! Or, go east to New York! Class distinction like a mutha!
But, what’s in a label? Just everything you need to know to decide if you want to stay, play or go away!

CARRINGTON IN HOUSTON
If Zoe didnot mention she was mixed and we saw a picture of her we would consider her a Black Actress.
no one wants you to diss your other heritage, but I bet if someone didnt know u they would say “the black girl””
^^^^
I’m not Carrignton BUT just because other’s identify her one way, doesn’t make it so.
I knew, the first time I saw Zoe in “centre stage” that she was biracial. but that’s just me
If someone calls me a Jamaican or a Trini, doesn’t make it so. I’m an African. Pure and simple.

Well Damn Chocolaat, tell us how you really feel. LOL I feel you though. My father is mixed with 3 races to include black. My moms is black. It makes me black…why you ask? The common denominator is B-L-A-C-K! Who really cares if you’re mixed with something? Folk always want to be mixed with something. Why? DOes it garuantee you a place in heaven? Will you live longer? What prize do you win? NOthing! This is 2006 and damn near e’rybody is mixed with something..PERIOD. Who actually goes around and keeps count of 5% Irish, 10% Injun 15% other shyt and 50% BLACK..seriously who does that? If some type of genocide, slavery or holocaust were to take place again, trust me, they won’t single you out because you think you have other races in you. Guess what Buddy? You, too, will be lynched. No one is saying to deny your race but don’t make a big issue out of it and CARRINGTON, Why is it that the only time I see you post is when you think you are correcting someone or something? And you start off with something along the lines of “why the fuck”? Do you come here just to argue Brova or what? Now if your pops gone be offended because you didn’t claim his other 10 races than another issue lies deeper within him. There are other things to think about than ‘what I’m mixed with’. Your ethnicity doesn’t DEFINE you…its the contents or your character that DEFINES YOU. E’rybody sang with me…Say it LOUD! I’m BLACK AND I’M PROUD!

she said as much on 106 and park and I have hated her since that day.. I loved her in that one movie she played a ballet dancer and watched for her since.. yes, i thought she was black.. because she IS black.. since when is latino a race? Black people are i nevery country of the world.. they can be natives of switzerland but doesn’t make them WHITE.. look at Boris Kudjoe he’s German but I’ve never heard him call himself caucasian like this bitch is trying to say she’s not “just” black. it has nothing to do with labels, it sounds to me she hates being CALLED black ( as some mixed race people do ) but yet she’s more than happy to capitalize on it and being a model for rocawear and shit… she needs to go

I hate when people act like being biracial or from the islands is some kind of privilege. Zoe Saldana, Sammy Sosa, La La, etc. are plain black as far as I’m concerned. She will always be described as a black female. And why is she being typecasted in movies that have an interracial theme ? ‘Guess Who?’ and an upcoming indie film starring Orlando Bloom.

if anyone’s dark-skinned with “questionable” features like non-kinky hair, blacks feel the need to probe their ethnicity and make an issue of it. going as far as honoring the “one-drop” theory. so then folks, paula abdul MUST be black, as must be all arabs, east indians, aborigines, right? poor ms. zaldana. how dare she have “good” hair and dark skin and not admit to being black? it’s a strange love-hate relationship blacks have with themselves and others–rejection and acceptance and envy all at the same time. no wonder blacks are the most psychologically messed-up people on the face of this earth. just wait till some alien species shows up. i guarantee y’all be dropping the pointless earthly race issue.

#88….get a life. If blacks have issues with themselves, it’s from years of dealing with white folks. Don’t try and sit up here and put us down as a group. “Psychologically messed up people on Earth”. How dare you?? Most blacks don’t have to “probe” anyone’s ethnicity..we already know usually. It’s whites who’ll get in your face and ask a million questions about what you are.
As a matter of fact, Paula Abdul may be black..she’d never admit it though. We ALL come from Mother Africa. Whether it’s obvious or not.

@ Damien…
I’ll address you point by point and not attempt to embarrass your lack of knowledge, at the end of the day, your response is yours, which means that it’s your self portrait - and nobody painted that picture except YOU!
1. “My father is mixed with 3 races to include black. My moms is black. It makes me black…why you ask? The common denominator is B-L-A-C-K!”
- My mother is black and my father is 1/2 polynesian and 1/2 puerto rican - so what’s MY common denominator since my dad ain’t black?
2. “Folk always want to be mixed with something. Why? DOes it garuantee you a place in heaven? Will you live longer? What prize do you win? NOthing! This is 2006 and damn near e’rybody is mixed with something..PERIOD.”
- What exactly does BLACK garuantee YOU, other than being ostracized, labeled, and prejudged… will being black garauntee YOU a ticket to heaven since it garaunteed you hell, here on earth?
3. ” Who actually goes around and keeps count of 5% Irish, 10% Injun 15% other shyt and 50% BLACK..seriously who does that?”
- I’ll refer you to point number 1 when I say, APPARENTLY yo DADDY does!!!! (No, seriously) CTFU
4. “If some type of genocide, slavery or holocaust were to take place again, trust me, they won’t single you out because you think you have other races in you.”
- The point you keep missing, Proud, black man, is that YOU seem to be the only one concerned with what somebody else thinks… does it really matter what a white man thinks of me? Absolutely not, no more than it matters what you think, sir.
5. ” Now if your pops gone be offended because you didn’t claim his other 10 races than another issue lies deeper within him.”
- Again, what school did you attend, that you don’t KNOW why a father would be offended that HIS child, a child HE raised chose to deny his hand in that child being here? When you make a baby with a white woman (and let’s be real here, it’s “proud” brothas like you who will bypass a fine BLACK woman to get with a trailer trash white woman just BECAUSE she’s white, so get off your bull.) but when YOUR son, decides that he’s WHITE, even though it’s APPARENT that he’s not all white, THEN you can expound on the “issue” with a father feeling the need to be validated by his seed, until then… I’ll pray for you.
6. “There are other things to think about than ‘what I’m mixed with’. Your ethnicity doesn’t DEFINE you…its the contents or your character that DEFINES YOU. E’rybody sang with me…Say it LOUD! I’m BLACK AND I’M PROUD”
- If it’s the “content of your character” that defines you… help me understand just WHY, you’re “black” and so “proud”????
Shouldn’t you be proud of the “content of your CHARACTER????” I won’t require a response, the fact that you were all over the place with your ORIGINAL post says that you speak from emotion, whether your response is completely contradictory or makes any sense is apparently, irrelevant.

I agree with Meatloaf, she’s embarassed and embarassing at the same time. How pathetic. The fact of the matter is that she, like Vin Diesel and Christina Milian, want to avoid the “black” label because they’re scared that it will cost them money and some dream role in Hollywood that they’ll never get. They gave Halle Berry an Oscar and 20 mil a picture for catching backshots from a hick and now she’s back to making duds, lol. Dream on Zoe….

It’s really fucking sad that you view being Black that way, really fucking sad. I feel you embody the way many mixed people have felt, and you’re entitled to your feelings, but I have theory that if mixed people (those mized with Black and something(s) else) and their non-Black parents fought as hard for equality in this country as Black Americans have, if they got over their bullshit inferiority complexes that, in my opinion, you certainly manifest, if they would stop licking the white man’s asshole and perpetuating the imposition of his standard of beauty on our people, we would be so more advanced as a race. I was reading further up after I posted. Wow last time I looked my husband has a heart eyes a brain fingers toes wow so do I. Because we are human beings. We all cry we all laugh we all see and hear things. The sooner we all stop categorising our ethnicity and trying to prove one is better than the other or means more than the other the sooner we can realise that we should all be proud of who we are as a person, not a colour, or race, or religion. Take responsibility for ourselves and our views and opinions on the world. Open our hearts to people not colour. Shit Im white and was raised on motown and soul but at the end of the day what does that really matter. IT DOESNT. I love my husband for his heart his laugh his smile his sense of humour the way he loves me his family and my family. So whatever people say behind our backs or to our face about us being “interracial” is like water off a ducks back to me. There are bitches, sluts, hos, playas, cheaters, abusers, ugly, pretty, rich, poor, selfish, greedy, giving, generous people in EVERY SINGLE COUNTRY OF THE WORLD WHICH LAST TIME I LOOKED HAD EVERY TYPE OF RACE AND RELIGION LIVING IN IT. If you want to lose sleep over it and have hate in your heart and mind then good for you. No intention of offending or directly respondin to anyone here. Just my own point of view

I think that the issue people may have is that in Hollywood, there aren’t many Hispanic or Black actors(actually getting work) so when someone from those cultures has success, people feel proud and want to identify with them. People want to see themselves mirrored on television/big screen. It’s hard to identify and feel proud that you are being represented on television when the actor(-tress) doesn’t want to “label” themselves. It comes off to the people in that particular culture as them being ashamed of who they are.
On the flipside, I can understand where she is coming from, if not putting a “label” on herself is getting her more roles. Maybe if she was opening about being Latina, she wouldn’t have got the Black-American role in DRUMLINE. She’s gotta eat but at what price? Would y’all be willing to be quiet about being black, white, hispanic, etc…if it would get you more roles/work?

Damn, Our people are really fucked up! This topic is my biggest pet peeve. I listened to this sista the other day with the most beautiful ebony skin talk about her 15+ ethnicities. The fact is…if you are not African (i.e. mom and dad can clearly define the country/Village/tribe of origin) let’s just call you black/African American.
Every black person (with ancestry tied to slavery) got a little something in them. I hate when people mention 15 other ethnicities (that may or may not be a part of their heritage) before they will say that their black. What is up with the self-hatred? Be OK with yourself first. No one cares if your great grandmother was half Irish and part Cherokee! Leave that shit alone. What is wrong with just being black? Is there something inherently wrong with that? Does it validate you as a person to try to identify with another race?
Who cares? Certainly not white people…they’re definitely not trying to claim any of us!

not be ignorant- to those who have a latin background- but being latino is NOT a race, original races such as the the AFRICAN, ASIAN/INDIAN, CAUCASIAN, AUSTRAILIAN-ABORIGINES-(THEY ARE NOT AFRICAN),AMERICAN INDIAN(WHICH IS FOUND TO BE RELATED TO ASIANS). LATINOS IS A MIXTURE OF THREE RACES BLACK, INDIAN, AND CAUCASIAN. SO A PERSON SAYING THEY ARE LATIN DOES NOT DICTATE THAT THEY ARE NOT BLACK OR WHITE. I HAVE NOTICED THAT MANY LATINOS DENY THEIR AFRICAN ROOTS DESPITE THEIR OBVIOUS AFRICAN FEATURES. I HAVE NOTICED THAT PANAMANIANS WHO ARE OF LARGELY OF AFRICAN ROOTS- IDENTIFY THEMSELVES AS BLACK /HOWEVER SOME GROUPS SUCH AS DOMINICANS WILL STATE THAT THEY ARE “INDIO” WHEN THEY HAVE DARK SKINNED- THE INDIANS ON THE ISLAND OF HISPANIOLA (HAITI AND DOMINICAN REP.) WERE PRACTICALLY ERADICATED BY THE EUROPEAN SETTLERS BEFORE THEY BROUGHT THE AFRICANS TO THE ISLAND. GIVEN THAT MANY DOMINICANS HAVE LARGE PERCENTAGE OF AFRICAN ROOTS AND SOME EUROPEANS ROOTS ALSO. BASICALLY LANGUAGE AND CULTURE DOES NOT DICTATE RACE. MY GRANDFATHER SPOKE SPANISH- BUT HE WAS BLACK.
IF AN AFRICAN AMERICAN PERSON SPEAKS ENGLISH/ DOES THAT MAKE HIM ENGLISH
SO THEREFORE IF A PERSON THAT IS BLACK SPEAKS SPANISH- IT DOES NOT MEAN THAT THEY ARE SPANISH- MEANING FROM SPAIN OR EVEN WHITE.

To sum it all up…I think what we are saying — those of us who are obviously black and can’t use “mixed” “multi-ethnic” or 50% of this or that…is that we’re just tired of people who look just like us wanting to claim ANY OTHER ETHNICITY BUT black. At the end of the day, you are what you say yo are….but it’s funny, people just don’t seem so pressed to claim their 100 percent African-American status just as quickly as they are to claim they’re mixed. At the end of the day we are all spirit, but while we are in these physical bodies and dealing with the real world, we are what folks percieve us to be. That’s just real talk. That’s why the “Prison Break” star and Jessica Alba’s man Cash Warren (son of Michael Warren) and folks who are not easily identified as black hear all those racial slurs because folks don’t know by looking at them. I’m all for being proud of all your heritage, but let’s be real about it. Most times if black is included, folks ain’t as proud about claiming it. I applaud those unlike Vin Diesel who may not be obviously black (like Prison Break dude) who are quick to let folks know what’s up.

#117 MrsCookieNzima, are you sure that you’re not in it for that “big Zambian sausage”? I’ve seen how white women flock over to Jamaica and other islands to get they backs broke! For $200 Jamaician dollars, a young Jamaician warrior can be hired for the whole week to perform the wild services! That’s about $80 US…a real bargin!
You will see the light when your children come home one day looking at you and saying…WTF? Get back with me then and tell me about all your anthropology! You and Zambian don’t represent black or white America!
Here’s some institutional knowledge you’ll need to know about African men…they beat, mistreat and eat their women! Enjoy all that white, you only get to wear it once!

She looks black so therefore that’s what you would think. Its human nature. Some mixed race pple call themselves black and others dont. Everyone has their own reasons why. White pple may not admit to having black heritage within their blood lines because black is seen as negative. But it is true to say that black pple are quicker to say that they are mixed with white or spanish etc. Mention african heritage to some pple they usually want to dismiss it. I am light skinned my mom is light and my dad is dark and they are both jamaican’s. I know I have african ancestry and white ancestry amongst others within our family because my mother was told by her grandmother. my true heritage is african, made up of other cultures. I’m sure many pple are guilty of seeing someone and wondering what they are made up of culturally. It maybe wrong but that’s just the way it is.

Bitch knows that if she goes in the 7-11 her ass will get followed…in Home Depot, Zales, Helzberg Jewelery….they see a damned light-skinned pressed-hair Negro—and since when did being Hispanic make a situation any better??? They’ll just follow her ass even more and some ppl might threaten to call immigration on her ass! lol (I know It’s not funny, but this topic needed a lil bit of light-heartedness)
That being said, Hispanic is an ETHNICITY….if they ask her wat race she is, hell she can say blue if she wants….but she’ll never get above these little, dumbass, supporting actress/mediocre roles…Latinas get the “sexy” roles and black leading actresses get the “hardcore/real” roles—blatina’s ??? Honey, you’ll be dreaming a dream w/o realization for the rest of your life….If she wants to limit herself, then let her….It’s a simple question with a simple answer: Ppl have been buzzing, what race/ethnicity are you? A: “Oh, I am black/African American (her preference), and my I have Hispanic Heritage…I consider myself Blatina”….done deal:
But, I too get very upset when ppl mistake me for an African/Jamaican, b/c Im not…and I will simply say, “No, Im black”….some ppl persist and probe deeper like “oh, but your skin is so rich/dark…I’ve never seen any ppl from here (US) w/ your skintone (Mind you, these are white ppl, mostly)”…and I’ll just say, I’m black and I AM AMERICAN….I WAS BORN HERE AND I HAVE NEVER BEEN TO AFRICAN OR THE ISLANDS,…by this point they can see that Im pissed and they think it’s okay b/c “Oh, my gf/bf is from Africa and that’s why I wanted to kno b/c they have dark skin”….STFU!!!! I AM BLACK AND IM PROUD! (Being blk isnt even good anymore for most unless ur from and Island or Africa…wtf??? My ppl my ppl….GTFOH)

Bill normally i will co-sign with what you say however in this instance i have to disagree with you. I also live in New Jersey. I am from the carribean my sister-in-laws boyfriend is white her best friends boyfriend is white and they go every where. they go clubbing to the malls and etc. no one even looks at them twice. now i know you may say that that is not the norm but they are not the only couples i have seen like that out here. i forget who made the comment on nationality…but people you do realize that nationality is where you come (i.e. Jamaican, german, etc.) from it does not determine the color of ones skin. Further more a person is entitled to call themselves whatever they choose. just because we may not think they are right does not mean they have to conform to our beliefs. in the end everyones opinion is there own because that is exactly what it is there opinion.

Also, just to clear up something: I DO believe that one’s race AND ethnicity AND Nationality (they are all different things) play a huge roll in a person’s make-up, so I can understand NOT wanting to leave out an integral part of who they are….BUT when you start skewing away from questions and making up fanciful, dumbass words for your self-definition that scream “I have identity issues”, and you end up offending at least one, if not ALL of wat makes you you! IE: how wthe hell dont we know that ppl in Hispanic Boards arent raising sand about this, too?? LOL —(thruthfully they are probably just happy that ppl are more quick to embrace their Latino-ism than their Black-ism): and that is why I am not upset at Africans who declare that they are African (blk or wht) or Islanders who declare that they are Islanders…but I AM APPALLED WHEN CONVOS LIKE THIS TAKE PLACE:
RANDOM GURL: I CANT STAND BLK PPL THESE DAYS, GET ON MY DAMN NERVES, JUST DIRTY, BEGGIN’, AND IG-NANT.
ME: AREN’T YOU BLK?
RANDOM GURL: HELL NO! IM FUCKIN’ ETHIOPIAN!
ME: SO, YOU’RE NOT BLACK
RANDOM GURL: HELLZ NO! I WOULD DIE IF I WAS BLK (clearly brushing her steel wool hair and fixing her gold chain on her dark (almost purple) skin and chewing gum….she later told me that she is better than blk ppl cuz her ass was from africa and so she never identified with blk ppl)….
and the same thing happened with my sister and her (Half Jamaican, Half Black) friend…JAMIACAN IS NOT A RACE—IT IS A NATIONALITY/ETHNICITY!

Ok why does almost every negro in the country have to say oh I’m 50% native american and 50% black? I mean hot damn! Being a BLACK MAN or a BLACK MAN is the most beautiful gift god could ever give us. Just because you have 5% chinese does not make you any better and it doesnt make you any worse but you should just know to stay proud and black. And men I’m not gonna be attracted to you more if you say ur 20% this, or 40% this race, I’ll like you no matter what ethnicity is in your family. Look at Ne-Yo he acknowledges that he has chinese and puerto rican in his family but he doesn’t go around tellin every damn person to call him mixed, he knows he is a black man, same goes for Tyrese. And I myself have a white grandfather but he wants me to grow up as a proud strong black women not a 35% white women.

When did being multiracial come into the mix???? There are indeed spanish people who are black RACE and ETHNICITY are different There are only two races black and white now there are several different ethnic backgrounds which is what Zoe fails to understand. If both of her parents are BLACK then so is she. She is a black hispanic. You see I know that several of you Mutiracial/biracial people are confused, angry or whatever but GET OVER IT!!!! In America and several other countries it is ALL about race and if people can easily identify you as black then that is what you are. No offense to whichever parent is not black but that is the way that society is so roll with the punches because it is not going to change anytime soon. I agree with several of you people, people want to be anything but black that is why we have no PRIDE!!!!!

I’ve been reading comments on the Black and Latin mix since yesterday, some are pretty enlightening and others are just plain stupid.
All I have to say is… The “Blatino” term better not catch on, if it does you know white folks will come up a term to degrade “Blatino’s” just like they did with Africans (niggers, coons) and Latinos (spics, wet backs).
The term would most likely be a hybrid of two of the derogatory terms used to degrade our respective races; something like… SPIGGA. hahaha
Face it man, if you’re dark enough for them to have to ask if you’re mixed, chances are your ass will be labeled “black”. Anyway, last time I checked they weren’t treating Latinos any better than they treat blacks here in this Country, we’re all in the same fucking boat. So, if ol’ girl is quick to speak on her Latin heritage, it’s probably because they’ve asked, and I’m sure she simply takes pride in that half of her as well; it’s who she is.

What make Zoe Saldana any less Latina than jennifer Lopez? Both of them have african blood, zoe just has a whole lot more. Yes, she’s a black woman, but she is a Latina. That’s not about her being mixed race…that’s about her having a race and nationality. We would never argue over JLO calling her self Puerto Rican, so why can’t Zoe just be called Dominican?
You’ll never see white people arguing over a blog talking about “Halle Berry’s White”!!
I don’t know why we as black people still find the need to call everyone out on their blackness? It doesn’t come from a place a PRIDE, it comes from a place of SELF LOATHE. When people are proud of themeselves (like so many white people are) they try to be exclusive. The reason why Halle Berry’s not white is because white people determined that anything less than “pure white blood” is not worthy of “whiteness”. However we as black people squabble over people like Mariah Carey and Wentworth Miller, (who proboly have more white blood in them than anything) as if were BEGGING them to join us.
I’m black and I’m daaaammmn proud of it. Being black is a wonderful thing and I’ve never found the need to argue w/ people over their identity. If you don’t want to call yourself black…well then go do you! I still know who I am. Instead of making black a “catch all” for people who have been rejected from all the other races that are a part of them, we should treat being black w/ the same amount of pride and exclusivity that every other ethnic group does. So many people like to be black when it’s convient for them and that serves us no good.
sorry for the long post

this whole issue is ridiculous. someone from haiti vs. someone from the dom. rep. vs. someone from the u.s. are as different as the individual pieces of a bag of m & m’s. sure a haitian may be black skinned, but that person was acculturated in a different environment than say a person from queens, n.y. it is as much about culture as heritage and it makes me crazy to see and hear people bitch because someone stresses their upbringing as though that person is ashamed of their african heritage. if one black person gets loud and obnoxious in public and generally makes an ass of themselves, i certainly wouldn’t want to be associated with that particularly if i didn’t grow up in an environment that condoned that behavior. there are many different perceptions of what a black person is, both good and bad. that also means that blacks come from many different experiences that make up the whole person. we are different and there’s nothing wrong with that nor is it wrong to stress what differentiates us either. it’s okay to be proud of your black heritage and any heritage that you come from. it’s ridiculous that generation after generation goes thru this, mofos need to grow the eff up. i’m done, goodnight.

First of all, I like Zoe. But I think she has problems with being seen as a Black person. The main problem is when somebody says Black, they think of African Americans. You can be black and be from any country but of course your ancestors are from Africa. Cross culturally people of mixed backgrounds tend to be quick to identify with their Anglo hertiage and slow to admit their African hertiage. Zoe also has gone back and forth on the issue in past interviews. She has said before that she doesn’t view herself as any race and doesn’t like labels. That she doesn’t see a Black Zoe or a Latin Zoe, she only sees Zoe. But in Spanish interviews, she calls herself a proud Latina… WTF? You can’t have it both ways. that is some hyprocritical shit. She be a happy Blatina and deal with it… being Black has helped your career, given you an exotic look. I mean why else would they pick you to play Bernie Mac’s daughter?

Carrington is a punk-ass bitch who is ashamed to be black. Other people have tried to tell your punk ass that you ARE BLACK even if you have a white daddy. But you want to play that privileged biracial game where you try to distance yourself from the black community by claiming “other” but let me tell you, to white folks, you are still a N*****.
I am really sick of the bi-racial/multiracial community’s shame over their black roots. BE BLACK AND PROUD, and by the way bitch, if you knew anything about BLACK AMERICAN HISTORY you would know that All African-Americans are multiracial otherwise we’d be Africans.
Anyone can look at a biracial person and tell by their features that they are mixed (oohhh, it’s so politically incorrect to say mixed) but in AmeriKKKa, if you have one drop of black blood, YOUR ASS IS BLACK nigga!
And Latinos are notorious for hating their black roots, so if punk-ass bitches like Carrington, Tiger Woods, and Zoe Saldana don’t want to claim us, then f*** them.
If Nicole Ritchie, Jasmine Guy, Mariah Carey, and Halle Berry can say they’re black, WTF is wrong with you?
Everyone can t

#98, First how are you calling someone ignorant when you can’t even spell the word? Second, since you brought Jesus into it, he sure as hell wasn’t a white man. Third, why would anyone want your Jesus when you’re cursing, insulting and trying to evangelize in the same sentence? Fourth, who cares what the white man thinks? Nobody is talking about that shit, we’re talking about what BLACK FOLKS THINK when other BLACK folks with their IDENTITY ISSUES try to claim they’re not black just because they’re mixed. ONE DROP = BLACK BABY! BE BLACK & PROUD.

Carrington, Miss Number 33, listen: you are very deluded. You can decide for yourself what you are: it’s called self-determination. Why would anyone look at a biracial person and call them white when it’s obvious they’re black? If you have the tiniest drop of black blood, black folks know that you’re black. Mariah Carey may have fooled the white community (until she got away from Tommy Mottola’s control and “came out”) but she didn’t fool us, and neither do you: YOU HATE BEING BLACK but you are, so deal with it.

#95 said: “Sad part is, the MAJORITY of you mf’s take more issue with the REALITY of someone ELSES nationality than you do with those drug dealers in your neighborhoods and SOME of your HOMES that are destroying many of our precious BLACK communities!”
Hey, bitch, I am a proud, BLACK DREADLOCK, NOT BLONDE DREADLOCK, NOT WEAVE, NOT BLUE CONTACT PROUD BLACK WOMAN. The fact that you said “YOUR NEIGHBORHOODS” reveals your distance from the black the community, which is fine: you don’t want us, we don’t want you.
When you GROW UP you’ll find out that Mommy and Daddy can’t protect you from the world. You need a community. Now, I have no problem with you embracing your white and black heritage, but what you’re trying to deny is your ISSUES with being black. Traditionally, the black community has embraced biracial blacks (and vice versa) because the white community didn’t AND STILL DOESN’T accept them as white. You stay in your little world with Mommy and Daddy. What you gonna do when they’re gone–go running to the black community like OJ. F** him and you too.

“OK.. SO WHAT IF SOMEONE CALLED JENNIFER LOPEZ WHITE?? AND SHE QUICKLY RESPONDED.. IM NOT WHITE IM PUERTO RICAN… WOULD SHE RECEIVE THE SAME HATE MISS ZOE IS RECEIVING???”
Apples and Oranges. Bad example you gave. People here have ISSUES because Zoe said she hates being labeled (black) yet labels herself blatino when the truth is she’s a black woman from a Latin country. A better example is: if Jennifer Lopez was white and Latino but LOOKED Latino and when people asked her if she was Latino she said I’m Whitino, then people would be calling her a crazy ass self-hating latino, just like we’re calling Zoe and CARRINGTON crazy ass self-hating niggas.

131-133 Hey Gianni, guess what, you are dark skinned because AFRICANS came to ITALY. (Hannibal anyone?) I’m not saying you’re black, because clearly you’re Italian, but I AM saying that MANY SOUTHERN ITALIANS (Sicilians, etc.) have African ancestry even it’s wayyyyy back, and that’s why so many Italians have issues with black folks.

Guys, let me add some info, I’m of white cuban decent. The truth is that latin & hispanic term only applys here in The United States. Even though I am White I’m lumped into the hispanic catergory as well because I’m Cuban. If I was in Cuba, Puerto Rico, or Spain. I’m White. If Zoe was in Cuba, Puerto Rico or Spain, She’s Black. So it’s more of a cultural thing, like when an individual of Indian decent from the carribean (trinidad) says that there indo-carribean.
Hope this helped.

it’s a sad and appaulling fact that it’s easy to say that a person who states they are part black and whatever is quickly dissed and claimed to be black.. yet when a person who doesn’t automatically look black but looks white like wentworth miller and states to be part black is automatically percieved as black..at the end of the day colour is only skin deep.let people say what they are without criticising.

Zoe Saldana is a good looking latina and latinos are not a race, we are a ethnic group which is diffrent and we can be white or black or brown or red what ever but were latinos. Latinos are people that have blood of latin people which are the france, spain, italian and any romance speaking people or blood. My last name is Saldana and it is a jew surname from spain. there even a town in spain that is called saldana. Saldana in italian is saldino.

No, it does not. If she were to be in the islands she would not be considered “blcak”, maybe in the Cuba of yesteryear, but not today. They don’t recognize racial classification in Cuban Socialism.
Latino is a race TO US, maybe not to the Americans (arrogantly read: “U.S.” as if the rest of us are not “Americans”)…….but, we perceive our own history through our OWN eyes, not the eyes of U.S. so-called “African-Americans” and so-called “Anglo-Americans”. Our history, culture and just about everything else is strikingly different than the U.S. perception of what is deemed “Black”. People weren’t called “Black” until the Europeans brought us over to the “New World”.
If Latino/as want to perceive their CULTURE as more important than “race”, this is their right. No one tells U.S. African-Americans what they should call themselves, so they most certainly cannot tell us what we should call ourselves.
U.S. people are extremely arrogant and they perceive that the rest of the world, no matter how different it may be, should follow suit. Please. They can keep their anger and murder each other as they have already been doing.

Latinos don’t view the world like African Americans do. Don’t ASSUME that just because YOU say she is “black” that Latinos will have this same perception. “Black” was a LABEL created by Anglo-Americans to separate people of African descent. The consequent “one-drop” rule was employed to create MORE slaves out of people and ergo have a larger labor force.
Do NOT assume that Latinos subscribe to this way of thinking. She is “black” to YOU, but to many Latinos she is LATINA.

Funny how everyone is saying that she doesnt want to be Black she herself has said that she classifies her self as such, here read a quote from Zoe herself from IMDB:
When I go to the D.R., the press in Santo Domingo always asks, “¿Qué te consideras, dominicana o americana?” (What do you consider yourself, Dominican or American?) I don’t understand it, and it’s the same people asking the same question. So I say, time and time again, “Yo soy una mujer negra.” (”I am a black woman.”) [They go,] “Oh, no, tú eres trigueñita.” (”Oh no, you are ‘dark skinned’”) I’m like, “No! Let’s get it straight, yo soy una mujer negra.” (”I am a black woman.”)
So btw can we get over it already, huh?!? Great actress, beautiful BLACK woman, as she herself says.

Zoe Saldana is an Afro-Latina. Get it? She is not ‘black’ because ‘black’ is a color, not a culture. You can find many people who look ‘black’ in all areas of the world. Even Indians from South Asian are sometimes darker than any African American. But are they ‘black’? No, they are Indian. Just like Zoe Saldana is an Afro-Dominican, or Dominican. In the word “Dominican” it is already implied that she is African. It is also implied that she is Carribbean, she is American, she is Spanish, she is American Indian, she is French, she is Portuguese. Stop using the word ‘black’ to define someone, because you are forgetting the roots that person cherishes and loves. And in the meantime, ‘black’ people, call yourselves people of African descent. Cuz whether you were stolen, you escaped, or you flew here, you know the roots. Don’t deny Africa and expect someone not to deny ‘black.’
Oh, and big ups to Carrington in Houston. You are speaking the truth, and I’m happy you are intelligent AND cultured. People of African descent need to start reading more history books and stop trying to corner people into identifying as ‘black’ when ‘black’ doesn’t even exist. Its culture and tradition, not color that people experience.
Peace

White people do talk about their heritage just like black people. Most white people claim to be irish in the same way that most black people claim to be native american. In fact most white people can trace their ancestry back centuries all down to the name, nationality, and trade, and they enjoy being able to do that. I personally wish I could say that, but I’m also proud to say that I am a black woman with a blinding, blazing bright future. It’s not where you’ve been, or even where you’re at, but it’s your destination that matters.

I don’t understand how all of you criticize her for saying that she is latina, because technically she is. She’s not trying to deny that she has african decent, she’s just sick of talking about it because people would rather talk about her ethnicity than her talent. Also same thing with Christina Millian, she is cuban, but has dark skin, she’s still latina. I am bi-racial, mom is hispanic, dad is black. But what bothers me the most is how all these black girls are always saying that they “got indian in their family.” Whatever!

Okay I typically don’t post my thoughts on these sorta blogs - most of the times they are filled with hatred ignorant commentary - but because I feel so attached to this particular topic, I felt compelled to add my 2 centavos.
American blacks are really a trip. Do you honestly think that if someone considers themself afro-latino… afro-hispanic or any name that acknowledges your latin roots.. you are not acknowledging your african heritage? Honestly, most Afro latin cultures are more connected to their AFRICAN roots simply because of the difference in history and the fact that the africans in the central and south american areas were able to preserve their connection. To constantly narrow your view of africans in this world by depositing them in that… silly ‘oh they are just black’ box… is not acknowledging the diversity of african people across the WORLD.
The bottom line is their are similarities that make us similar.. BUT their are fundamental differences as well. I myself am a mixture of african and latin roots. I acknowledge both and I don’t feel myself any better for it!
Black Americans for a good number of reasons.. .make a huggge friggin deal about race, culture, complexion, texture of hair..etc. more than I have noticed in other african/latin cultures. In parts of Central and South America.. being Mulatta is common and there is not this type of dissection of color, complexion, hair.
You know what else, I don’t care of some ignorant fool gets rubbed the wrong way by my post and rants and raves about whatever they feel like it or some wannabe intellect that tries to prove me wrong by offering and paraphrasing some new book they just bought.
I came to this country at 4 years old.. didn’t speak a lick of English.. and singled out by blacks in this country for not being ‘black enough’. My mother is a deep dark creamy beautiful chocolate brown, speaks with a thick caribbean/spanish accent and caught hell for it by american blacks… singling her out .. treating her as an outsider for no good reason. As soon as an African person is famous and well known.. THEN those ignorant black people come up outta the wood work and talk smack about how this person is black, etc etc…
Some of you ‘African Americans’ really do Africans from all over the world a disservice by reinforcing ignorant beliefs of non blacks held by people all over the world.
