BILL COSBY SETTLES ‘SEXUAL ASSUALT’ LAWSUIT

Thursday, November 9, 2006

bill_c2.jpgComedian Bill Cosby has settled a lawsuit brought by a woman who claimed he sexually assaulted her, Cosby’s publicist said on Wednesday.

Andrea Constand, a native of Canada, said in the suit the attack occurred at Cosby’s home in suburban Philadelphia in early 2004, when he allegedly drugged her and then assaulted her.

“Ms. Constand and Mr. Cosby have resolved their differences, and therefore the litigation has been dismissed,” Cosby’s publicist David Brokaw said in a statement. He said there would be no further comment.

Constand’s suit alleged at least 10 other women also had been assaulted by the 69-year-old comedian.

Prosecutors declined to file criminal charges against Cosby, saying there was insufficient evidence.

Deo,

It is SO Easy to get caught in a compromising position.

All a Young lady need is opportunity, patience & time..

We all know that there are women who set men up all the time..
That’s all I’m saying..We don’t really KNOW what was going down…
WHY was that Young lady at his house in the first place…SHE had to have been invited..She walked in the front door on her on accord…Maybe she promised Dr. Cosby some Booty, then chaged her story around once she got home..Maybe she went over there with the intention of setting him up for a lawsuit….Or maybe he has a history of drugging yound ladies…we really don’t know …..

Ed Bradley - Rest in Peace

Ed Bradley (June 22, 1941 – November 9, 2006) was an American journalist who began reporting for CBS News in 1967.

Bradley grew up in a single parent household, and learned the value of hard work from his mother. He attended Cheyney State College, graduating in 1964 with a degree in Education. His first job was teaching sixth grade at the William B. Mann Elementary School in Philadelphia’s Wynnefield community. While he was teaching, he moonlighted at WDAS in Philadelphia, working for free and later, minimum wage. He programmed music, read news, and covered basketball games.

His introduction to news reporting came during the riots in Philadelphia in the 1960s. In 1967, he landed a full-time job at the CBS-owned New York radio station WCBS. In 1971, he moved to Paris, France and was living off of savings. As he ran out of money, he became a stringer for CBS News. He covered the Paris Peace Talks. In 1972, he was transferred to Saigon, to cover the Vietnam War. He spent time in Phnom Penh covering the war in Cambodia. While covering the war, he was injured by a mortar round. He had shrapnel wounds to his back and arm. In 1974, he moved to Washington, D.C. He covered the Carter campaign in 1976 and then became CBS News’ White House correspondent until 1978. From 1978 to 1981, he served as principal correspondent for CBS Reports.

In 1981, he joined the staff of 60 Minutes, when Dan Rather left to replace Walter Cronkite as the anchor of the CBS Evening News. He was the first—and to date only—male correspondent to regularly wear an earring on the show. He had his left ear pierced in 1986 and says he was inspired to do it after receiving encouragement from Liza Minnelli following an interview.

Over the course of his career, Bradley received an Emmy Award, a Peabody Award, a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, and the Paul White Award from the Radio and Television News Directors Association.[1] He was married to artist Patricia Blanchett and had homes in Woody Creek, Colorado, and New York City, New York.

On November 9, 2006, Bradley died from leukemia at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. He was 65 years of age.[2]

@74 OH but Kristen - if they stopped having black people talk bad about us on tv a lot of rich young black boys would be out of work. AND this last speech was directed at us - not the world. He went to a womens hbcu and made this address, should he have sent the press out the room before he spoke? That would be an idea . . .

@Deo I agree w/you 100%. I am a hip-hop head from way back. But the hip-hop that projects black men as thugs and black women as hos and bitches is garbage. But the problem goes further than Cash Money, Luda and the other interchangeable rappers that are out now. While we may have made some inroads in the business it is still controlled by “others” who have no interest in promoting another image of our black youth. Lets be real it is young suburban kids who are eating up this rap shit that is out there now. They spend there money to get the “hood” experience from the confort of their gated communities. So if they are buying the music industry is going to sell it.
But back to Bill (Cosby) I still say you attrack more bees w/honey than with vinegar.

@79 you’re right about the outside control, still I wonder, if snoop (not to pick on him just using him for an example- that most recent mug shot keeps popping up in my mind) felt that the average black man on the street wasn’t feeling him - would he still play that role? I know he knows that little white kids that have the 20$ to spend on his cd keep his life style up but still. Would he still do it if they were his ONLY fans??? Would others?? I don’t know . . if the black community spoke up as a unit, would it stop? slow?

I am Black and a litigation attorney. I’m also a woman who doesn’t want to see any woman sexually assaulted. However, settling a lawsuit does not equate “guilt”. Lawsuits are expensive to defend. Even a small town lawyer like myself will bill a client over $300 an hour for this kind of suit. How much more do you think it would cost Bill Cosby? Very often attorneys advice our clients to settle a case that is going to be too costly (in terms of money and reputation) to litigate.

What jumped out at me is that the prosecutor’s dropped their case. I worked as a Death Penalty Defender for quite some time. Trust me, prosecutor’s only drop cases when they don’t HAVE A CASE. All of which leads me to believe it was probably a crock and the plaintiff/victim was looking for the big payoff.

Finally, as young black people, we have to pay more attention. Every well-known black man with any type of power or influence has had his character assaulted at some point. It is referred to as “character assassination”. I don’t agree with everything Bill has said or done, but I do know a person is innocent until proven guilty, and that settling a lawsuit doesn’t mean you are admitting guilt–it could just be a smart money decision.

I don’t know if any one has said it but because you rarely see black men in power unfortunately some of our black women will forget their morals and values and do whatever it takes to get their attention and if they don’t get everything they want then you have a situation like this and so many others where there was a settlement out of court and that does not neccesarily mean a person is guilty. My fiance’ has a management position and he see’s it all the time that’s why I told him there won’t be alot of business trips alone and it’s not that I don’t trust him I don’t trust other females. Some females self-esteem is so low for whatever reason they feel they don’t deserve a man like that so then they try and mess up what you have. That’s why I’ll be like Doug Christie’s wife. Whenever he travels I travel because hoes don’t care about what you and that person have built together. I can mingle with upperclass when I need to but will still cut a bitch that tries to mess up what I have!

@86 you’re right. it seems like some women have such low expectations for life that they don’t believe they will find someone else so they will settle for being a “good” man’s mistress. It’s one of the ways black people can control their own destiny. stop breaking up families and creating single moms! stay out of other peoples marriage and wait for your own! many times these women don’t even want the man - just the life style they THINK his wife has.

What the old heads call this? Oh yeah… Chickens comin’ home to roost!

A lot of what Bill is saying is true, but why in the f**k does he have to essentially chastise us young blacks in front of the world.

If he’s tired of us callin’ each other nigga, and the youngstas wearin’ they pants saggin’, and young ladies getting’ pregnant and young men not stickin’ around to take care of their children, then talk to us, and us only. What is speaking at engagements with more white folks than blacks gonna do for us?

The Cosby’s got enough bread for him to rent out coliseums in every metropolitan city in the nation, invite us and then let us know how you feel! But as it stands, I find out what Bill Cosby is sayin’ via the media, and it almost seems as if they sayin’ “Now see, even your own know you ain’t shit!” Bills a brilliant man, he should know that this ain’t the way to get at today’s youngstas; if they feel disrespected, it’s a wrap.

Now… I know the Cosby’s do a lot, and I’m proud and grateful for that, but what about the kids who aren’t straight A students, what about the youngsta that’s barely passin’; are they afforded scholarships? They need more guidance than anyone.

I have great respect for Bill Cosby, I just don’t agree with how he’s attempting to address today’s black youth.

P.S. I don’t believe that a settlement = guilt; I hope it doesn’t.

Chocolatepeach17,

Thank you for breaking that down. I think it’s hard for laypeople to understand the inner workings of the legal system (civil and criminal). In some people’s eyes, the accused are either “guilty” or “innocent” and there’s no room for gray.

As for Mr Cosby, his contribution to Black people as a whole should not be overshadowed by his lust for women. If that’s the case, let’s kick Rev Jessie Jackson and Kirk Franklin to the curb right now. Many a lustful man has led many a people to the cross (Right, Bill? :0). There are quite a few of us that would kill to keep our skeletons in the closet. However, it doesn’t negate the fact that we may be good parents, activists, mentors, teachers, friends and the like.

I’m not condoning his actions. But I actually saw the accuser being interviewed my Matt Lauer on the Today Show some time ago and her story was filled with holes. Matt shamed her so much that her attorney stopped the interview. I couldn’t believe how poorly she came across for someone that was crying assault.

Bill was calling out Black people on their bull because some Blacks are full of bull. If what he was saying didn’t apply to you, the sting of his words may not have been as biting. Blacks that do right may have been his source of inspiration but the trifling ones supplied the ammunition.

And as far as the “keeping it between us,” how in the world is that possible in today’s global society? But more importantly, do we keep it between ourselves when we make videos that portray women as hoes (rightly or wrongly so)? Do we keep it between us when we’re acting up in the workplace or showing out in the streets? Do we keep it between us when we’re perpetuating all the other negative stereotypes that get us paid?

Instead of worrying about what Bill’s sharing with the rest of the world, let’s worry about what’s NOT being shared amongst ourselves!

What we need to be keeping between US is our wealth and our wealth of information. We need to learn how to share information with other Blacks that will help us to uplift one another. Share that stock tip. Share that link that might help a struggling business owner to seek out a VC or angel investor. Share that job opening with a peer that’s been looking to get into the corporate world. Share something other than an opinion about what the next man should be doing with his life.

And yes, I can speak it because I live it. More than a few people can attest to the fact that I share all kinds of information with them because I want to see them succeed.

Just my two cents.

Bill’s case is strange because he had many years to speak on the ills in the black community but he didn’t (to my knowledge) because he had something to lose. Now he’s 70 something years old, he’s made however many TV shows and movies, his career is over and now he wants to lead. Lol. I wonder if the white man had let him buy NBC like he wanted to back in the day if he would still be speaking like he has lately. I don’t know whether he really assaulted the lady or not but I do know that the white man keeps a file on all the negroes that he lets blow up in his entertainment and sports industries. If you look like you’re about to step out of line all of a sudden your dirty laundry gets aired (Bill Cosby), or you get sick (Muhammad Ali), or you die suddenly (Johnnie Cochran). Bill knows that file was being kept but he doesn’t care anymore because his career is over. The leaders of this society don’t care how many frivolous “scholarships” these affluent negroes give out as long as they don’t rock the boat and start speaking revolutionary. Many young blacks go to college and come out with the mentality of how they can build up “America” as opposed to their own community. That’s why you look in Oprah’s audience and it’s all white women. The powers that be know that she wouldn’t dare step out of line and risk the influence that was given her. As soon as a famous black does start to speak out of order, all of a sudden after 40 years in the industry you have kids out of wedlock and you’re a rapist and your son gets killed strangely on the highway. Strange.

BILL COSBY pissed me OFF talkin that ol’ HIGH and MIGHTY SHIT.yeah he got RICH off of POOR BLACK PEOPLES BACK’S but then HE turned his BACK on his people saying they gotta PULL THEMSELVES UP BY THIER OWN BOOT STRAPS.While the HELP HE GIVES IS GOOD it should be given EARLIER ON in a childs LIFE like AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS,FOOD,SPORTS,TRAINING or SKILL CENTER to KEEP kids interest in school. The REAL fact of the matter is ECONOMICS all our INNER CITIES(check out your city)have been ABANDONED(see empty buildings)
by INDUSTRY and our GOVERNMENT which inturn does NOT provide JOBS or INCOME for the HEAD OF HOUSEHOLDS which is usually the START of the breakup of MOST of our FAMILIES.Our INNER CITY SCHOOLS also have been ABANDONED mainly through FUNDING or lack of,causing LOW WAGE for INNER CITY TEACHERS which inturn only attracts the NO OUTHER CHOICE TEACHERS who ought to be one of the higher PAID professions.ALL this coupled
with the fact that BLICK people CAN’T GET A LOAN.
WE HAVE NO BACKING from ANYWHERE.the only TRUE FREE(mentally) escape is our LOVE or SEX(best thing ever invented)we have (as an escape)which causes UNWANTED PREGNACIES but if there was a STEADY HOUSEHOLD whith out the worries of WHAT TO EAT or SLEEP our SOCIETY WOULD not HAVE AS MANY PEOPLE FALLING throgh the CRACKS all the while getting CHASTISED BY SOMEONE who’s already MADE IT.
THAT’S WHY I CALL HIM A HIPOCRIT.
I’LL BET HE DON’T EVEN BELIEVE IN AFFIRMATIVE ACTION.
IF IT AIN’T HIS STYLE he will TALK ABOUT YO ASS.Take EDDIE MURPHY.HE TRIED TO TELL HIM NOT TO CUSS IN HIS COMEDY.like RICHARD PRYOR said FUCK HIM do the people laugh at your JOKES?yeah then FUCK HIM.

Meatloaf,

I’m not saying that I agree with what he did (if he did anything at all).I will never understand why women put themselves in situations like that in the first place. She should have never been at his house. I know that the jello snacks are alluring but she still shouldn’t have been there.

WOW
Never, Never, Never blame the victim(?) in a sexual assalt case
I don’t care if she had just underwear on when she showed up at his house and kissed him
He has no right to touch her if she didn’t want to be touch
Bill Cosby is in his 70’s(?) now
Who would think Dr.Phil Huxtable would drug and rape them?

Damn Bill, all that money u got and you spinning it on knockout pills? That’s some ill shizzit! You shoulda just bought the punani straight out. That kinda shit dilutes your message, which was on point, but now you make yo’ self seem like a hippocritter… that’s like mike Jack paying that little boy 17mil… I wouldn’t give a squirt o’ piss to someone that’s lying on me, “just to make it go away”. We’d have to take that shit to da mat.. 4real!
