BLACK REPUBLICAN!

Tuesday, November 14, 2006

blackrep.jpg

Nas & Jay-Z have teamed up for “Black Republicans” from the much anticipated album from Nas, “Hip Hop Is Dead.” I think people have it in mind that just the opposite has happened. Looks like our dear friend Hip Hop is making a strong comeback! The beat of the song knocks, it’s really triumphant and both Nas and Jay spit hard on each of their verses. I’m pretty excited to hear the rest of Nas’s album, especially since I thoroughly enjoyed Jay-Z’s. Both albums seem like they’re going to do well. Maybe there will be a tour… headlined by the both of them?

It’s not bad. But there’s something about Jay’s flow that’s turning me off a little (still my boy). NAS IS THE BIZNIZ on this track though. I so love Hip Hop is Dead.

Overall, the track is hot. A-

The song is less meaningful than the title.

Once again Jay gets on a track with deep meaning and spits fire, but still misses the point! BLACK REPUBLICAN–That’s such a deep issue and Jay just uses it as a catch phrase simialar to the way he uses his work he had been doing with the water crisis.
This song gave me the same feeling that I got when I heard Renagade–That he really didn’t belong on a track with that deep of a meaning.*Note:Look up the word renagade and than come back argue whether he deserves the title* Nas, didn’t kill him on the track like Emimem did on Renagade. However, Nas kilt the track more than Jay did. Nas’ verse stayed on topic and grow from it. Jay’s used “black republican” just as a starting point and never looked back. Plus, his analogy is weak! He says, “I feel like a black republican, money I got coming in/can’t turn my back on the hood.” Anyone with some knowledge of politics especially black politics knows that no black republican would EVER say “can’t turn my back on the hood I got love for them.” Now, Nas, who goes at the track about militants, uses that line in a more appropriate manner.

I just feel like “black republican” soundsgood, but Jay really doesn’t understand what it really meant in order to create a more affective analogy .

But, since it’s Jay, ignorant negros are gonna be bumpin’ it and spitin’ that line like its the gospel and may even be fooled into registering as a republican.

It’s like Jay and Nas knew when they picked that as the title that it would catch peoples eye because its a hot button issue. I just feel Jay fumbled the ball a little. He didn’t drop it, but it was an ugly catch.
The song (Jay’s verse especially) is less meaningful than the title. But it’t still a banger. Don’t get me wrong. It’s still a classic. I just Causion people to not be blinded by the title.

Eh, it’s a decent track. With a name like that I was expecting a little more in the way of actual political/social commentary…

This is basically another one of those “we come from the streets where it’s real” tracks…but it’s a good one.

I agree completely. I have always said that about J. People put him up on some huge pedestal like he cares about the community. He doesn’t. When other artists are out there championing issues that really matter he’s calling for bans on Cristal and half-assing UN measures to address the water crsis.

What little he does do it seems like he only does it so he can spit it on a track.

#14, I definitely agree with you. upon reading the title of the yesterday, I thought it was going to be on some whole other stuff.

I think, really, the reason why I like the song so much is because the beef is squashed and two big names in hip hop are doing stuff together, y’know? it’s just good to see some forms of unity.

THERE HE GOES AGAIN, EXPLOITING A ANGLE FOR THE SAKE OF MARKETING AND SELLING. I AM NO LONGER A FAN. DAMN, CAN’T PEOPLE JUST MAKE GOOD MUSIC ANYMORE WITHOUT USING A BEEF TO SELL A CD, OR EXPLOITING A RELATIONSHIP GOOD/OR BAD TO SELL A CD!

I’M SO DISGUSTED WITH THE WHOLE MUSIC SCENE RIGHT NOW, EVERYTHING IS SMOKE AND MIRRORS, NOTHINGS REAL ANYMORE, MUSIC HAS LOST IT’S PASSION. THAT’S WHY I LISTEN TO CDS NOW IN MY CAR, SO I CAN CHOOSE WHAT THE HELL I WANT TO LISTEN TO, CAUSE IF I DON’T, I’LL HEAR CASSIE, BEYONCE, AND JAYZ’S WACK ASSES ALL DAY LONG IN HEAVY ROTATION. DJ’S ARE SO PAID OFF TODAY, THEY DELIBERATELY PLAY THE SAME DAMN MUSIC ALL DAY LONG BECAUSE THEY WERE PAID BY THE ARTISTS RECORD LABEL TO DO SO. I PICK WHICH CD’S I WANT TO BUY AND I LISTEN TO THOSE WHILE ENROUTE IN MY CAR. THEY WON’T FORCE THAT DUMB BULLSHIT MUSIC ON ME.

Exactly Brian…i thought the same thing, BUT it is Jay and Nas getting together and doing a song despite the beef they had goin on a few years back….

In the hip hop world, it’s good to see some type of togetherness, rather than the usual bafoonery (did i make that word up?) we see among certain arists

Why not use a good relationship to sell a cd? People use titties, ass, beef and whatever else to sell a CD.

And I don’t think they are using that to sell a CD, cuz you know everything doesn’t work for everybody…Janet Jackson perfect example. JD was able to make big selling hits for Mariah Carey but was not able to do the same for Janet.

“Carm, is he talking about you?”
Nas’s insistent voice penetrated the fog in my head. I must have picked up the ringing telephone in my sleep. Had it awakened our daughter, Destiny, too?”What?” My bedside clock read midnight. It was 3 A.M. for Nas in New York. Uh-oh. Whatever prompted this call was troubling enough to keep him awake.”I keep hearing about this Memphis Bleek song with Jay-Z. It’s supposed to be about you.”The song was news to me, but at the mention of Shawn’s name my heart sank down to my stomach, which tightened into knots. I sat up in bed and tossed aside the silk comforter. With the movement the diamond on my left hand caught a silvery ray of moonlight. I took a deep breath and calmed down. Nas and I were finally getting married. This was no time to panic.”What song?” I asked, as neutrally as possible.”‘Is That Your Chick.’ Carm, it’s getting harder and harder for me to ignore the rumors about you and this dude — “”They are just rumors, Nas.” I put on what I hoped was a persuasively reasonable tone. “People talk. I put up with rumors about who you’re supposed to be with all the time. Foxy, Beyoncè, Mary J. Every week they’re saying it’s someone new. You’re just going to have to charge it to the game like I do.”Nas was silent. I could almost hear him balancing it out in his mind. On one side, there was my comforting explanation. A big part of him wanted to believe it. On the other hand, there was the growing weight of his suspicion. Nas wasn’t exactly buying my little speech, but he let things drop for the moment. We hung up and I lunged for the bathroom, where I was sick.Nas was very competitive in that he had two part-time jobs: he spent half his time talking up himself and the other half talking down others. In public, Nas tended to be more low-key and aloof than other entertainers. But at home, he was extremely opinionated and vocal about his peers’ artistic efforts. Even if he was cool with someone personally, Nas always had a raw comment about their music. For example: in my opinion, Foxy Brown is the most talented female MC. Most will agree Foxy wears the crown, hands down. Not Nas. “You could just throw a few ingredients in a bowl, stir, and come up with another Foxy,” he would rant. He had criticism of just about anyone. He would say Ja Rule was biting DMX’s style, or Fat Joe was corny. These reviews always led up to the same point: “There is no real talent out there.” The only lyricist Nas considered to be in his league was the late B.I.G. Nas’s battle with Jay-Z was as much one of words as of the heart. I’d started seeing Jay finally doing to Nas what he’d been doing to me for years.Nas and Jay-Z always had this bizarre competition. Nas would make comments to me like, “I don’t remember that nigga being no ill drug dealer.” In fact no one with any real credibility could confirm Jay-Z’s “back in the day” drug dealer/baller status. Exaggeration is standard in the music industry. But according to Nas, Jay-Z had no merit to his claims and not one defender.”Carm, this nigga Jay is so shallow,” Nas would say. “He’s a surface MC. He’s plastic on stage. That’s bad enough. But he doesn’t even know what he’s talking about. He hasn’t done half the sh** he’s talking about in his rhymes. I don’t believe him. Period.”Still, I couldn’t imagine what might have motivated this “Is That Your Chick” song. Naturally Shawn would appear on Memphis Bleek’s single — a fellow artist on the Roc-A-Fella label. And the song certainly could have something to do with me. Throughout our clandestine relationship Shawn had made many references to me in his lyrics. But he had never said anything negative or explicit and had never used his relationship with me to taunt Nas.This was turning into an urban soap opera with me in a leading role as the femme fatale. I had to hear this Memphis Bleek song. After a few calls to friends in New York, I found someone to play the song for me over the phone. It went “How foul is she? And you wifed her” and talked about how he put the condom on “tighter.”At first I thought, Psss . . . I don’t know who Shawn’s referring to, but he *!@$%&**!@$%&**!@$%&**!@$%&* sure ain’t talking about me! The lyrics were rather racy and described a type of liaison that was the exact opposite of our relationship.Shawn’s disparaging lyrics gave no indication of the solid friendship we’d shared over the years. Not to mention the fact that it took a good year before we even became lovers or that I had recently been pregnant by him — ’cause he didn’t wear a condom at all, let alone tight enough.

After listening to the song, it was evident that the record was designed to take a direct stab at Nas, making me a casualty of this ongoing and highly publicized strife.I tried to put things in perspective and take it like a hard-nosed realist, but I couldn’t feign callousness. Shawn’s actions were a complete disappointment. Instead of being hurt, I was enraged. I knew what I had to do before this thing went any further. I had to bring Nas up to speed. It was time to reveal the truth, once and for all.Throughout the next day, Nas gathered evidence that the song referred to me. That night he called back for another round of questions. As I quietly deflected them, I walked by Destiny’s room to make sure she was asleep, then headed downstairs. I walked down the stairs with the cordless phone to my ear, my forehead breaking out into a sweat. My heart was racing, my breathing became heavy and my stomach was in knots. I even said a quick little prayer and turned off all the lights as if darkness provided an escape. After some anxious pacing between the bathroom and kitchen, I ended up in front of my bathroom mirror, in darkness. My reflection was a vague silhouette, just barely visible. I was so tired of misrepresenting myself, of sneaking out, of lying and denying the truth. Of course, Nas had long done the same thing. It had been a rough and rocky nine years for us. But for all our drama, we were inextricably linked — we had a daughter and deep, deep history together. I couldn’t let Shawn belittle Nas as a man. Nas deserved to have a fighting chance.”Nas, it’s true.” My words tumbled out. “The rumors are true. I have been seeing Jay-Z.”"Carm, how could you?” Nas asked in disbelief. “Why that nigga? I can’t believe what you’re telling me right now.”"Nas, I’m sorry.” I choked out my apology as I started to cry. “I am so sorry.” I had always thought that when this day finally came I would feel vindicated. For so long I had craved the taste of bittersweet revenge. Nas would finally feel what I had felt over the years. But this was completely different. I felt horrible, not for my actions, but because I had hurt Nas and he was suffering from tremendous heartache. It just wasn’t what I’d envisioned.Nas was unmoved by my sobbing regret. He wanted details. “How long have you been f***ing with this dude?”"It’s been a minute,” I answered. Even though I’d resolved to tell him everything, it took a while to get my courage up.”How long is a minute, Carm?”"Like five years.”"Five years! Five years, Carm? What the f*** is wrong with you? What were you thinking? You mean all this time I been hearing rumors about you and this nigga, brushing them off like, ‘Nah, not Carm. She may do her thing but she would never disrespect me like that. . . . Where did you meet this nigga at?”"We met at a club in the city. It started as a friendship. Was for a year before we slept together.”Nas sucked his teeth. “I don’t give a f*** if it took you ten years to sleep with him. You’re supposed to be my wife, that sh** wasn’t supposed to happen, Carm! I don’t deserve this. I want to know everything! You ever been to his crib?”"Yes.”"You ever been to a hotel with him?”"No. We always hang out at his crib.”"Did you ever take my car to go see this nigga?” I thought to myself, What kind of question is that? But I continued to answer.”Uh huh.”These intimate details would give Nas enough material to spin some elaborately jealous story lines in his mind. Still, I had to answer the questions to prevent his imagination from getting the best of him. He would drive himself crazy with speculation if he didn’t have this chance to grill me.”Does he hold you at night?”"Yes.”He hesitated. I realized what he really wanted to ask. Guys may feign disinterest about the matter, but they’re all anxious to know: Is he bigger than me? For the moment Nas avoided the size question.”Did you go down on him?” he asked.”Once.”"Once, I don’t believe that! You’re such a f***ing slut! I can’t believe you sucked that nigga’s d*ck, Carm. Come on, you’re gonna tell me you only did it once. You’re such a f***ing liar.”"It’s true. You can ask him.”"What? Ask him? Carm, I’m gonna kill that nigga! I f***ing hate you!”Nas hung up on me. I called back. He just kept screaming through his extensive vocabulary of derogative terms: I was a slut, a whore, a dirty *!@$%&**!@$%&**!@$%&**!@$%&**!@$%&* and more. He hung up, but then immediately called back, hoping to find some release in another diatribe. It had the opposite effect: Ranting only sustained his sense of violation, kept his feelings raw. We went back and forth with a few more rounds of confession and condemnation until he finally stopped answering the phone. Nas was done with me for the night. Maybe forever.I turned on the bathroom light and looked in the mirror, still crying. Tears seemed to be washing away my features, making an anonymous mask of my face. So I had finally confessed to Nas. I looked at myself a little more closely. It was time for me to get real with myself.I was crying tears of frustration. Shawn had stripped me of the opportunity to divulge our relationship in my own private way. I was mortified that Nas found out in such a public manner. But that’s the way it goes down in a love triangle, the unholiest of trinities.I stared in the mirror until I finally stopped crying, then washed away the residue of my tears. Facing the truth gave me a new clarity. Self-realization smoothed my forehead and conviction strengthened my jaw. I was naïve enough to believe the uncovering of my affair with Jay-Z would bring closure to my relationship with Nas. I was ready for it to end. But it wasn’t the end. In fact, it was only the beginning.

@32 mimi renee who wrote:

My response:

See, your response is what’s wrong with the focus of music today. I said it before and i’ll say it again, why can’t people just make good music, absence of all the bullshit! Damn, is it too much to ask for? And you mentioned people use titties - uh, nothing in my post talked about videos, or anything visual. I’m referring to where the focus of music is going! If we wanted to hear the details of a beef or former beef, or the details of a relationship past or present, hell, write a book, but can be bring focus back to music, and get out of using marketing hype to sell cds. Cause artists have now caught on to the fact that people will buy an artist cd if there’s a diss on there or if they are exploiting the intimant details of their relationship (such as what was alledged with usher’s cd with chili (usher’s biggest cd ever). But i guess that’s too much to ask for. Like i said, that’s why i listen to cds in my car now. No more radio cause it’s gone to the fuckin doggs! Mostly bullshit all day long in heavy rotation. But enjoy!

@ Deo (35), I fiugred out what it is that I don’t like about Jay’s flow. I hear COMPETITION in Jay’s voice. And I can honestly say that I’ve never heard “that” before. It’s subtle, but it’s alive. And this is no hate. It’s real talk.

If you listen to any track he’s done with another talented artist (BIG, DMX, etc.) you’ll hear how “easy” he sounds. But on this one it’s like he’s trying to douse a fire that hasn’t even risen yet! And then Nas comes through like ‘Settle down Jigga Man and let me show you how to spit. Be easy.’ lol

I swear, I may be going off on the deep end but I hear it in EVERY line, every verse. And for someone that has been listening to BOTH artists since they dropped their first single, I think I know “it” when I hear it.

My point is why does it have to be that they are using their relationship to sell music? How do you know that is their motive? That’s all I’m sayin. And I used titties and ass as an EXAMPLE because whether it’s displayed as a visual on a video or talked about in a song, it’s still a marketing tool to sell the song to the public. Some people might not buy a particular cd, but because they saw the video to the song, it made a slight difference.

I actually agree that radio sucks these days. I listen to nothin but cds in my car also because I like to hear a VARIETY of music, not the same back to back BS played constantly.

Lyrically Nas puts it down and makes better sense then Jay-Z in my opinion. However I’m definitely happy that two artists like this can come together, get this money, and make great music despite their past tense beef they had for years.

I’m glad that they can come together in the booth, but ya’ll know damn well Jay’z head is toooooooooooo big to headline with another artist. We dont need a repeat.

I mean no harm but #36 HA do you really think anyone gives a fuck about Carmen’s fake ass romance novel? She exaggerated the hell out of that story.

Another song in which Jayz improved the song but killed the very meaning of it ” Diamonds from Seirre Leone”. His lyrics in the remix were wack. But song was good. Same is the case in this song. Song is fire but not that meaningful.

@45 .. HM. you may be right - I don’t know him well enough for that. I don’t think Jay should be tryna compete w/ Nas. they are too different. I really think Nas deserved the attention Jay gets but there’s something about him that just isn’t as charming so people worship Jay

I like it but Jay-Z kinda ruins it for me. It’s probably cuz I love Nas so much but not really a Jay fan :) But they sound nice together and I’m glad they have their priorities lined up

#12, enjoi i completely agree– i said the same thing 30 secs into the song

i dig the song, but on a different scale than i was expecting

the content wasnt as potent as the song title evokes

i was looking for a political bitch slap, with heavy social undertones

but i still dig it though

in the beginning i was like why is Jay dominating all the track time, but when nas came through he brought it (he, dare i say it, outshines jigga on delivery and tone)

Nas is a better lyricist. he is much more introspective than Jay. For the most part Jay was Money, cash and Hoes… he just rapped well about it for a long time. He wasn’t that conscious rapper with the exception of D’Evils(he was sorry for selling crack to his friends) but damn he made like 500 songs.

Nas’ Flow Murdered the the Beat.
Jay killed it too, but Nas was like a staright Assasin!!
See!! this is it, Hip-hop at its finest, whether or not you like what either of them are rapping about. they got us all talking about it,
Can anyone really compare other so called rap music to this kind of HipHop Musak???
I think not.

@66 i think dude means that most women don’t really know what real hip hop is most of y’all of fans of niggas based on their looks or a catchy beat why is it rakim, krs one , don’t have a huge female fan base and ll who’s not up to par with those cats have a big female following. or worse why y’all think niggas like chingy, nelly ext are selling reocrs . real niggas don’t buy their bullshit music but teenage girls and women do. in the words of Ice T

”If your girl likes a song that means it ain’t hot.”

YOU CAN TELL JAY’S BEEN THE KING 4EVA HOW PEOPLE RIDE EVERY WORD AND VERSE HE SPITS. THEY HAVE DIFFERENT FLOWS - JAY’S IS SOFTER, NAS’ IS MORE MILITANT. THEY BOTH STRAYED FROM THE VERSUS, YET KILLED THEM. NAS’ PUTS HIS OUT FRONT WHEREAS JAY ALWAYS MADE YOU READ THE LINE AND IN BETWEEN IT TO GET YOU TO THINK LIKE A POET LIKE HIM. JAY KILLED IT AND I’M GLAD HE DID IT FOR NAS’ ALBUM TO HELP HIS SALES. DID IT OCCUR TO ANYONE THAT HE DIDN’T WANT TO GO HARDER THAN THE ARTIST SINCE IT’S HIS ALBUM? ALSO, DOES ANYONE NOTICE HOW MUCH HAPPIER NAS IS SINCE HE’S BEEN LIVING THE JAY-Z LIFESTYLE? THEY’RE BOTH HAPPY AND DOING THEIR THING AND NO ONE’S EVER GOING TO STOP JAY-Z!!! KINGDOM’S COMING NOV. 21ST BABY!!!!
