A few days later she needed me to babysit her daughter and she tried to talk to me as if nothing ever happened. Why are people arguing over the usage of the term when the true crime is INTENT? Kramer said NIGGER with negative intent. That’s totally different from someone like Chris Rock using the word NIGGA or NIGGER with the intent of not to harm or offend anyone, but to simply discuss the racial contrasts that exist in a comedic format.

I mean people can use explosives as fireworks or demolition devices. Or people can use explosives to harm or kill people. Whether you view explosives as being good or bad is purely based on the intent of each individual who uses them.

So yes, Kramer is a racist and he should be called out as such. And no, Chris Rock using the term in a comedic format doesn’t justify Kramer using it with an intent to verbally harm those Blacks within his audience in a moment of frustration.

Today, I recently read about the racist remarks that actor Michael Richards made onstage at the Laugh Factory this weekend. There is no doubt that his remarks are unacceptable and absolutely cannot be tolerated in American society. Moreover, I find it ironic that a man who has portrayed one of New York’s beloved characters would find himself under public scrutiny. While his words, filled with rage and contempt towards African Americans is real, it is difficult to reconcile his comments when African Americans, Latinos, Koreans and even Whites impose the word nigger onto themselves in common exchanges and expressions. There has not been one day when I have traveled on the subway in the past four years of living in New York that I do not hear that word being tossed around like it is a term of endearment. I hear high school age students (and much younger children), utter this term in exchange of most pronouns. I hear parents referring to their sons and daughters as a reprimand for misbehavior. I hear girlfriends referring to their significant others as nigger as if it is a pet name. It deeply interests (read: disturbs) me how this can be manipulated into such a troubling double standard.
Users of this word will argue that suffixes matter. They will say that “ah” is acceptable whereas “errr” will put you in direct harm. To me, the root of the word has so much history of hate that it is of no consequence which ending you emphasize. Users of this word will also argue that it is essential to reclaim racial epithets so that they can be converted into positive terms within the community. I find that in rare occasions this can be realized. When I look at other cultural groups, I find that I do not witness the same sort of exchanges that I hear among my community. I don’t hear Jews humorously discussing Anti Semitism, I don’t hear White people saying “What up, my honky,” I don’t hear Asian folks referring to themselves as chinks or other unmentionable names. But every group has found some comfort in using the word nigger in casual, comical, every day vernacular.
I hope that African American leaders will hold Mr. Richards accountable for his behavior. At the same time, I encourage them to also make a challenge to our community that it is also unacceptable to continue to perpetuate this double standard. There is no question that most pop culture, music, fashion and the arts are modeled directly from the urbane African American. I believe that we can model better.

There was no mistake when making reference to being lynched 50 years ago and there was no mistake when he said the word nigger a thousand times. There is no excuse, apology or statement that can make up for what he said. I accept his apology with a noose in my right hand and a whip in my left hand…Lets see if its funny then.
