Our upbringing is the reason most of us as black women have to fight so hard to keep our poise while falling in and out of love. Most of us have seen are been apart of broken families. All I’m saying is can we please break the damn cycle.

lala is grown and will chose her own path and i hope she has a healthy pregnancy. as far as single parent homes i would like to think that a single parent male or female can effectively raise a child alone but it is shown to be better if that child grows up with two parents in a loving relationship. in my perfect scenario i would have had my son after i got married but it didn’t happen that way. we really can’t say whether or not lala will or won’t get married at some time to her fiance… its still so early.

I am a product of a single parent home and my mom is AMAZING, GENEROUS, KIND. She made sure that I got my work at school and that I went to college on a full ride. But what she didn’t do was talk to me about boys. I lost my virginity too early to a boy that was more like a daddy to me than a boyfriend. I needed a father to tell me about the games that boys/men play. But my 1st boyfriend taught me how to handle guys. I just wish I had had a father to do that instead.

Moral of the this story, single mothers are definitely doing the damn thing. But in most cases a mama and a daddy is better than one or the other.

Ed Bradley - Rest in Peace

Ed Bradley (June 22, 1941 – November 9, 2006) was an American journalist who began reporting for CBS News in 1967.

Bradley grew up in a single parent household, and learned the value of hard work from his mother. He attended Cheyney State College, graduating in 1964 with a degree in Education. His first job was teaching sixth grade at the William B. Mann Elementary School in Philadelphia’s Wynnefield community. While he was teaching, he moonlighted at WDAS in Philadelphia, working for free and later, minimum wage. He programmed music, read news, and covered basketball games.

His introduction to news reporting came during the riots in Philadelphia in the 1960s. In 1967, he landed a full-time job at the CBS-owned New York radio station WCBS. In 1971, he moved to Paris, France and was living off of savings. As he ran out of money, he became a stringer for CBS News. He covered the Paris Peace Talks. In 1972, he was transferred to Saigon, to cover the Vietnam War. He spent time in Phnom Penh covering the war in Cambodia. While covering the war, he was injured by a mortar round. He had shrapnel wounds to his back and arm. In 1974, he moved to Washington, D.C. He covered the Carter campaign in 1976 and then became CBS News’ White House correspondent until 1978. From 1978 to 1981, he served as principal correspondent for CBS Reports.

In 1981, he joined the staff of 60 Minutes, when Dan Rather left to replace Walter Cronkite as the anchor of the CBS Evening News. He was the first—and to date only—male correspondent to regularly wear an earring on the show. He had his left ear pierced in 1986 and says he was inspired to do it after receiving encouragement from Liza Minnelli following an interview.

Over the course of his career, Bradley received an Emmy Award, a Peabody Award, a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, and the Paul White Award from the Radio and Television News Directors Association.[1] He was married to artist Patricia Blanchett and had homes in Woody Creek, Colorado, and New York City, New York.

On November 9, 2006, Bradley died from leukemia at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. He was 65 years of age.[2]

I read alot of folks in this post stating CARMELLO should get a DNA/PATERNITY test…well hell if that’s the case LALA will be needing frequent STD tests–as long as she is with him.

She does look good, this is her FIRST baby..& most times FIRST PREGNANCIES are pretty good to a womans figure, but she still has some months to go (lets give her BELLY more time to grow)She has to be about 5 or 6 months in these photos (maybe 4 months). I did read your entire comment but its obvious you didnt read mine. I responded to what I wanted to respond to in regards to a couple of posts. What if marriage doesnt work? What if the world ends? Whats your point? They are not married so why ask about the divorce? The future is not promised to anybody but she is pregnant today and today she is an unwed mother. Not a good look.

OK…Saying that people should try to wait to have children after they are married IS NOT degrading to anyone in any way. It is not WRONG to try to raise the standards for our children and for our race.

How can so many of you reasonably argue that marriage doesn’t matter? Have you seen how many of *our* kids are struggling socially, economically and emotionally? How many of our young, black males who are in prison will tell you that their fathers weren’t around? Yes, it is true that marriage holds no guarantees, but it DOES indicate a desire on some level by BOTH parents to stick together and TRY to do what’s right. I am not speaking from a religious standpoint, but rather a common sense standpoint.

If two people are so unsure of whether or not they can get along enough to remain partners forever in marriage, why on EARTH would you think they can successfully raise kids together FOREVER? Why would anyone want to put their kids through, “OK, you staying with ya Daddy this weekend, and I’ll have you next weekend?”

For me, this discussion isn’t about LaLa and Carmelo (although they are role models for kids…like it or not), but it is about the state of the black family in general. I guess I just don’t understand why we don’t expect more from ourselves. Our goals as a community are so low. We can do so much better.

I know I’m gone get put on blast, but…for me, it’s not even about the adults…I just hate seeing our kids lag behind EVERY OTHER RACIAL GROUP in the U.S. in terms of education sytems, economic opportunities and respect. Society isn’t treating our kids right and we’re not helping by having weak family structures to raise our kids and deal with these tough issues.
