Does the name Amadou Diallo ring a bell? Sadly, we have another one of those cases on our hands. NYPD is back to their old tricks and recently shot and killed another unarmed black man.
Sean Bell (seen above with his fiance) and two of his friends were leaving his bachelor party and jumped in the car only to be shot at about 50+ times by the NYPD. Here is more info:
Officers fired 50 rounds at a car carrying the men after it struck an unmarked police minivan. The three were unarmed.
The dead man was named as Sean Bell, 23. He was due to marry Nicole Paultre, 22, the mother of his two daughters, on Saturday afternoon. The two wounded men, Joseph Guzman, 21, and Trent Benefield, 23, were taken to hospital, where Mr Guzman was listed in critical condition. Joseph was shot 11x, while Trent was shot about 3x.
New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly yesterday confirmed the men’s car had been struck 21 times. He said that an undercover officer inside the club reported that the men had been involved in a fight and a firearm may have been involved.
Civil rights activist the Rev Al Sharpton challenged police to explain what had happened. He said:
“This stinks. Something about this story does not seem right.”
The Rev Sharpton claimed Mr Guzman had been struck up to 17 times. [SOURCE]

One thing that I hate about statistics is that they annihilate the relevancy of “raw data” or factual numbers and lessen everything to a %.
If there are more ppl of one race than another race and ppl from the minority do somethinf (kill one another) or contract something (dont even get me started on the AIDS epidemic)…then the minority race’s % will undoubtedly be larger than the majority race b/c the population is smaller than that of a majority race.
i.e.: 5 green ppl kill other green ppl out of 15 green ppl.
10 orange ppl kill other orange ppl out of 100 orange ppl.

Those statistics are based on civilian vs civilian crimes. Not excusing any crime…but this article is about those in authority vs civilians. Police using their position/authority AFTER the fact they’ve killed an innocent person, to not pay for their actions.
Human life isn’t to be thrown away or discounted for no matter who violates who. The absolute fact of the matter is accountability is demanded whether in this life or the next.
All life ended tragically, violently, or prematurely deserves an outrage from everyone. Throwing around statistics won’t make us shut up or try to hold the police responsible. For those of us who are civil citizens in our cities and states, we need to trust those that serve to protect us. How can we if the good cops (which i think may outnumber the bad cops but are just wusses) won’t hold the bad cops accountable? That could lead to an us vs them mentality resulting in chaos. Who wants to live like that?

I am very impenitent in my statements. I said my father WAS a police officer. He left the force because he got tired of the injustices he saw, and had to carry out towards Blacks in the inner city communities. He got tired of the racist system implemented by the NY justice system. Now he is an RN. He told me that it doesn’t matter what’s the color of their skin once they put on that blue uniform, they become part of a racist system and they have to uphold the racist system – which is, all black are guilty until proven innocent!!
Now, with that being said, if my father ever abused his power or killed an innocent black man, for no reason, other than because he could and would possibly get away with it, then yes he too deserves death.

Or worse ask the families of Luima, Amadou Diallo, and recently killed Sean Bell. All the aforementioned were all murdered by these death squads, moonlighting as NYPD’s. Ask the families of these victims what they feel towards these cops and their “errors in judgment” Sean Bell should be on his honeymoon now, not on ice in the morgue.
I am pretty sure that all cops aren’t bad cops. But then again not all Iraqis are killers or suicide bomber. But when we hear about Iraq all we think about is violence and killing. Same with the cops, it is only fair, until they stop profiling me, I will stop profiling them.

Grant it the movies are sometimes funny but I saw an interview where a Jewish director said that America did not want to see Black people portrayed in a romantic and respectful light. This documentary was on Public TV and had several Black actors and actresses on there. Nia Long spoke of how hard it was to get a role that portrayed Black people in a good light. These images have permiated our society.

Those are the two main groups of people fighting in the movies. And this is what our community and this country has baught into. But there is a 50% hike in missing peoples cases.

I just wanted to make a correction for readers, it was reported that J.Guzman was shot 11x, that number was later increased to 16x but the actual number of times he was shot was 19, 3 of the 19 shots were exit wounds. I’ve been glued to the television here in NYC(Brooklyn). They are planning a protest and maybe even civil disobedience. I completely agree with you…we have to teach our kids to have respect for themselves and in turn for human life. Every stereotype contains a little truth in terms of the reverential “black gang banger” PLEASE black parents step it up, put that time and energy into raising decent human beings and stop giving these bigots and racists fuel for fire. Teach them the importance of an education. The perception of us as a race is absolutely horrible. You see, That is the reason for a black man’s hate/rage. Whether you want to believe it blacks get harrassed all the time; Whether it be from store owners or the usual bully….policemen. So many incidents like this have happened. Protect and Serve seems more like Ride Or Die today. I hope a policeman steps up and tells the truth about what really happened that night. Those policemen are criminals, I don’t care what profession you have, your still killed innocent people. Pal shot 11 times makes justice plea

Joseph Guzman, who is in critical condition after being shot 11 times, with fiancée and 6-year-old son.

His face covered by an oxygen mask, his bullet-ridden body confined to a hospital bed, a survivor of the 50-shot police barrage that felled Sean Bell on his wedding day claimed yesterday that the cops “tried to kill me.”
Gasping as he made his first public statement since the shooting, Joseph Guzman demanded justice for his slain pal as relatives and well-wishers streamed through his room.
“They killed Sean,” he said. “Y’all gotta do something. We didn’t have nothing, we didn’t have nothing.”
Guzman’s message was conveyed by the Rev. Al Sharpton, who along with the Rev. Jesse Jackson visited Guzman and the other wounded man, Trent Benefield.
The visit came as police sources revealed last night that they have identified a long-sought fourth man who walked to Bell’s car.
Two witnesses picked the man out of two separate photo lineups. He is not under arrest but is being sought. Police believe the mystery man – who had been with Bell and his pals inside the Queens strip bar before the shooting – may have run off with a weapon. So far, no gun has been recovered.
And detectives have not yet questioned Guzman. When several tried to get into his room on Monday, his sister Yolanda Guzman chased them out.
“Saturday he was unconscious, handcuffed,” Sharpton said outside Mary Immaculate Hospital in Queens. “Yesterday he was groggy. Today for the first time he spoke.”
But Sharpton said Guzman, 31, was “very clear” about what he was saying.
“Even at one point, when we pulled back from the bed after having prayed, he called us back and said, ‘They tried to kill us, they tried to kill us,’” Sharpton said. “Obviously he is just coming into his own consciousness and pleading for help. We promised him we would do what has to be done to get justice.”
Calling Guzman a “victim witness,” Jackson said the NYPD needs to act with one eye on its history of brutal, sometimes deadly attacks on unarmed blacks.
“Whether it’s an Abner Louima, [Amadou] Diallo, or Sean Bell, those who are held to a higher standard must pay a higher price when they, in fact, break the law they are paid to uphold,” he said.
Guzman also knows something about breaking the law. His record includes nine arrests for drug offenses. But he had not been collared since a felony drug charge in 2002. He pleaded guilty in that case and recently completed parole.
Whether the five cops who fired on the trio broke any laws is the subject of an ongoing probe by police and the Queens district attorney’s office that is being monitored by the Justice Department.
Prosecutors are awaiting a toxicology report on Bell to see if he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the shooting. They also are wading through 911 tapes and police radio transmissions – as well as crime-scene evidence and the officers’ personnel records – as they prepare their case.
The officers – two black, two white and one dark-skinned Hispanic – have been placed on paid leave and told to give up their guns.
Mayor Bloomberg said earlier it appeared the officers used “excessive force” and yesterday both the outgoing – and incoming – governors agreed.
Gov. Pataki called what happened to Bell “one of those tragedies that breaks your heart.”
“Obviously 50 bullets fired into, or at, an unarmed individual in New York is excessive force,” he said from Kuwait. “But the appropriate response to that is something I think the investigation of the mayor and the police commissioner will reveal.”
“This terrible tragedy deserves to be fully investigated,” Governor-elect Eliot Spitzer said to El Diario La Prensa.
Guzman was hit 11 times and relatives said he remains in critical condition.
“It’s extremely hard on the body when you have 19 holes,” Guzman’s pregnant fiancée, Eboni Browning, said as she held their 6-year-old son, Juwan. “Things we value and take for granted, he can’t do.”
Benefield, 23, was hit three times and underwent surgery yesterday to remove two bullets from his body. “He looked nervous before going under the knife,” said his lawyer, Kareem Vessup.
Still wearing her engagement ring, Nicole Paultre, Bell’s fiancée, also visited her beloved’s wounded buddies but left without comment.
Guzman and Benefield had taken Bell to the Kalua Cabaret in Jamaica, Queens, for a bachelor bash – unaware that undercover cops probing prostitution and drugs were there.
Before they left at 4 a.m., Bell had an angry exchange with another patron. And one of the undercovers who had been inside the club followed them to Bell’s car because he heard Guzman say he was going to get a gun, police said.
Philip Karasyk, who represents the Brooklyn-born undercover detective who fired the first shot, said his client identified himself and held his fire even after Bell clipped him with his Nissan Altima. But when the man sitting in the passenger seat – whom police sources identified as Guzman – reached into his waistband, the officer fired the first of 11 rounds at the men, he said.
Then the other cops, who had never fired their guns on the job before, joined in. Detective Mike Oliver, who fired 31 of the shots, even reloaded.
Surveying the crime scene, Guzman’s sister said the cops’ story just doesn’t add up. “A dog doesn’t deserve to die like that,” Yolanda Guzman said.

Killing makes police the perps now
We always have to look closely at any event involving homicide by cops in the black community. The reasons are simple. First, there is a very long history of racist violence against black people that has just as often been committed by white police as by freelance rednecks.
Even so, there has far too often been an assumption of guilt on the part of the police that parallels the old convention of always blaming the bloodshed on the black victim, which would lead to the statement that “he was asking for it.”
Once marches and singing and placard carrying became a knee-jerk convention, what began as a righteous form of protest against injustice was slowly transformed into no more than noisy television spots for demagogues and their gullible followers. Then there is the fact that we always need to see the incident within the context of oppressive violence that has made and continues to make a hell of life in the black community.
If we look at the example of the recent homicide by police in New York City, we find undercover cops fired 50 rounds of ammunition, killing one black man, wounding two others. None of the men shot was armed.
Those defending almost any police action will say that it was a mistake. Yeah, right. Sure thing. Bull dung.
Though the police are far more often the heroes than the villains, it must, at times, be assumed that they are in the wrong. This is one of those times.
When we hear about the pressures of the job, we should realize that almost anything that happens during an officer’s tour has been discussed in detail during training. Beneath every statement and every piece of professional advice, one thought keeps silently booming inside the mind of the teacher and the student: This is the kind of job that can lead to a violent death if one makes a mistake or is in the wrong place at the wrong time. Ergo: A little paranoia goes a long way and could make the difference between survival and death in the streets.
We hear about the pressures of the job and understand that they are enormous. The booming drug trade in the black community, the swelling street gangs (almost all of whom are armed) and the difficulty of telling an honest citizen from a knucklehead with a gun surely make the job demanding and dangerous.
This difficulty, by the way, is not reserved for white officers. Black officers have the same troubles because hip hop has made acting and looking like a thug an affectation on the parts of too many young black men. None of those things make a killing excusable or something that can be swept away with a frown and a look of tragic recognition.
There is a tragedy to be recognized, which is that conditions of war are so normal in black communities that we should not be surprised to see an occasional misreading lead to another black death. While all of that may be true, there is little excuse for excessive force to the point of homicide when the suspects were unarmed and had not fired even one shot themselves.
Heads should roll because the police, burdened with all of the confusions and various imbecilities that must be faced when upholding the law, manage to do their jobs without killing citizens.
Those who cannot conduct themselves with the bravery and ease of command that are second nature to the great majority of our police officers, need to find themselves another line of work as soon as they are released from prison for irresponsibly deadly actions.
