There are several distinct media effects:

1. hypodermic/silver bullet model: the media injects audiences with messages that they absorb at face value.
i.e. if the media says X=Y, then the audience will truly THINK X=Y sans hesistation.

2. cultivation model: The media cultivates the minds of the audience to such a degree, that they believe what they see is indeed reality.

3. uses and gratification:… “even the most potent of the mass media content cannot ordinarily influence an individual who has ‘no use’ for it in the social and psychological context in which he lives.

The ‘uses’ approach assumes that people’s values, their interests, their associations, their social rôles, are pre-potent, and that people selectively ‘fashion’ what they see and hear to these interests.”

(You can basically oppose or disagree with the messages sent from any media forms).

To End my Discussion: Does anyone remember reading Plato’s Allegory of the Cave in school? Well his main point was to stop allowing ourselves to be bounded by hegemonic ideologies and mass media forms. We should liberate ourselves and seek truth, light and wisdom or live in complete and utter darkness.

To those who said I was taking this too seriously….

First, both Janet and Timberlake were wrong about the Super Bowl incident. There’s no dispute in that. It was wrong Period! They BOTH should have suffered repercussions, but they both didn’t….

The issue I DO take seriously is the underlying matter of disrespect to Black Americans. My problem is with Timberlake’s attitude–he’s doing it BECAUSE he thinks he can. My even bigger problem is with those of you who are justifying and making excuses for his way of thinking–IT’S PLANTATION 2006. It is straight wrong. When are you going to have a sense of pride, responsibility, and community as a Black American?

When are you young babies going to get it in your head that the majority of the racism is ECONOMIC now? Who controls your thinking? Because that’s where you’re going to spend your hard-earned dollars. How much of it is going back into something to help your current household, community, and future generations? Certainly not the foolishness that is called Entertainment.

This dude ate humble-pie long enough to get what he needed to get and now he’s disrespectin’ major artists? That’s why I asked. What are you going to do about it? You curse him out here. Seems to me that a lot of folks are just “blowing smoke” and cursing dude out on a blog when you know the dj’s at black radio stations who could stop playing his music altogether. Why can’t you blog it, like you do everything else, and pass the word to stop supporting his stuff?

Believe me, the Timbalands of the world will get the message when they know they won’t have the support of the black community.

I said all that to say this: This Janet/Timberlake situation is an example of the real issue. Disrespect towards us, b/c we don’t love, respect, and look out for each other. Too many of us still have a “Put up with it” blase attitude towards other cultures who are now bold in their disrespect b/c we won’t do anything but yell, scream, or curse about stuff, but no action. Case in point: manning_dick, a white poster, insulted Hdizzle, a black poster, using the words: Boy, Raccoon-faced, and Porch Monkey. Yet, NO ONE has called him to the carpet on that. He was allowed to come in on a blog for Black Entertainment and boldly called a black man these names. What the heck is that about? Frankly, I’m tired of the attitude of people who think they can slap us and get away with it. I also know this doesn’t include everyone as there are always exceptions to the rule…

Manning: You were straight wrong. You called someone else racist, but your true side showed when you were provoked. That’s what you resorted to when you were pushed? You filled the stereotype of a White Racist. This is what my fellow Black Americans need to get a clue about. HDizzle: You were wrong to bait him, and showed no respect or class on a basic human level. Your ugliness came out in threatening to find out his personal information and harm him. That’s what you resorted to when you were provoked? You filled the stereotype out, of an out-of-control Black man, just perfectly–instead of being able to handle that nonsense without nonviolent language or threat. But, shoot, what’s really the issue when black folks are on here cursing out and calling each other ‘Niggers’, ‘Bitches’, and whatever? Self-hate at it’s best…and yes, I am pulling the race card on white people and on us.

Bill, you commented on why folks are not over at the MLK thread. There’s no respect anymore for who got us to this point–God–or the “instruments” He used (MLK, Malcolm, and others) to get us out of slavery, segregation, and etc. We’re supposed to be the smartest, the best, and the brightest–but are we really? Looks to me like too many folks have not renewed their own minds regarding their own race. When will education, owning businesses, training folks to be hired, hiring them, having good attitudes, hard work, getting rid of lazy minds and attitudes, respecting God and having some substance and character be a priority again? When is who we are, on the inside, going to be just as important as how we look and appear to others on the outside? When is the phoniness going to take a back seat?

I’m not here to bash, nor to segregate, but we have some real issues that only Black Americans can address and change within ourselves, our immediate world, and the community as a whole–disrespect being one of them. MLK is not here to talk about raising your level and stop allowing media, rappers, celebrities, and other folks to be the Moses in your lives–controlling your minds and making you think that ‘making paper’, ‘gettin’ your own’ and ‘looking the part’ is the only game in town to get you to the Promise Land.

MLK would be disgusted that his generation has failed us by moving out of the black communities to what they thought were “greener pastures” and failed to pass the responsibility of the cause on to us. He’d also be pissed that his boys capitalized on his name and built lives for themselves and their friends, and perfected the look of helping others, but didn’t have the heart. He would be disgusted with our generation b/c we’ve managed to take two steps back in our expectations of what we should look like, talk like, act like and who we should be like.

MLK would ask: “Lord, you had me go through everything I went through, to what end? They’ve made some gains, but don’t have the sense to know that the racism is economic, they’re getting shut out of everything that’s available b/c they feel they don’t need school or to go out and vote? They keep ignoring the real leader. What’s up with that?”

Anyway, sorry to be so long, but I have to speak out. You’re all entitled to have your own opinions and minds. That’s beautiful, but to what end? Think about that. I care about Black America and what’s going on with everybody–from our Seniors to our babies. These blogs are a good indication of what’s important to you and where your priorities lie….Love you babies!
