PAUL MOONEY CAMPAIGNS FOR THE END OF THE N-WORD

Thursday, November 30, 2006

paul_moon.jpgIn light of the whole Kramer debacle, comedian Paul Mooney is renouncing the n-word and has vowed never to use it in public again.
The star who has made a living off using the word, said he would campaign to get all blacks to stop using it as well. In a recent interview with AP, he talked about his history with using the word and also declared that he would no longer use the b-word when referring to women..

Here is a snippet:

AP: You helped pioneer the use of the n-word in black comedy many years ago, didn’t you?

Mooney: Oh yeah. I had a romance with the word. I worked with Richard Pryor using the word. It was so destructive — it was created by whites to hurt and destroy — and we were trying to defuse it, trying to desensitize people to it. We did it every chance we got, we would drive people crazy. We were very funny at it. But Richard backed off the word in the early 1980s. He went to Africa and came back and said he didn’t see any n-people there. But I said, ‘That’s him, that’s not me.’ I was very much into it like an alcoholic was into (liquor).

AP: Any idea how many times you’ve used the word?

Monoey: Oh, honey, you can’t count it! If I had a dollar for every time I used the n-word I’d be a billionaire.

AP: Will he be forgiven? Isn’t this the ultimate taboo in America — a white person using racial slurs in public?

Mooney: The man is a human being. Everyone deserves a second chance. I’ve heard violent reactions from people, black and white — how could I be forgiving? Look, everyone’s rap sheet is ugly, mine included. We’ve all got to straighten up about this race thing. We’ve got to make something positive out of all this.

[tells a joke]

Mooney: Believe me, it will get just as big a laugh. Oh yeah, honey, it’s a new Mooney. And another thing — I will not be using the b-word (to refer to women) anymore either.

AP: Oh?

Mooney: I’ll say ‘heifer’ instead. In my wildest dreams, I never thought I’d be saying this, but it’s a whole new world. A new time. I can’t change the past, but one person can change the future — anything can happen. I’m taking my stand.

I totally agree with Paul Mooney. Our images and music are seen and heard worldwide. People in other countries watch our movies and listen to our music and think that the words used and stereotypes portrayed is all that we are. I applaud Mr. Mooney’s efforts to better himself by choosing to stop using the “n” word.

I feel like it’s a great idea. I’m totally against the way Kramer lost his MIND, but I also feel he had good reason to get upset. How would a black comedian felt if there were a couple of white people in the audience that kept saying things like “He’s a wash up, his jokes aren’t funny.” I think Kramer KNEW those things and that pissed him off more. But his delivery was nothing but pure hate, and that’s where he crossed the line; by what was said. I’ve used the N word a million times to my homies, and folk I’ve grown up with, but in todays society, you have to present yourself in the same manner you would want to be respected.

Let just stop trying to hurt one another feelings…

We as black people have become desensitized to the word niggA…we aren’t desensitized to the word NIGGER!!! We use the word as a way to refer to each other, sometimes even as a term of enderment. I refer to my man as “My Nigga”. In no way shape or form am I putting him down. I have mixed feelings on Paul’s approach…he uses the word in comedy…well, there is nothing funny about the word Nigger!
And, I’m offended by his whole heifer comment. That is a low blow, and I think that is just as insensitive as bitch!!! Whatever, I’m irritated, and in the words of MEATLOAF, STFU…you heifer!

Our ancestors worked too hard for us. They fought long and hard for us to have educations and good jobs (all while being degraded and called niggers on a constant basis).
I guess our way of thanking them is to call each other the same name that they fought to abolish. I think we as black people owe ourselves a round of applause for that!

I am so proud of him for doing what his doing. He has used that word sooooooo many times, yet he has the courage to publicly declare that he wont use it anymore.I applaud him for that. I used to think that there was nothing wrong with it until Oprah talked about it and explained the importance of banning the word. I always knew the history of it, but never realized how deep it was. This is why I think that if there is more (influential) black celebrities coming forward to bann the N word, people will listen and probably follow suit.

I’m gonna stop saying it so much. My 6 year old daughter asked me what it meant after hearing the little boys at the bustop saying it and then hearing it again on the news. It put me in an awkward situation and she couldn’t understand why a “mean” word was okay to use with each other, but shouldn’t be used by white people. I made up my mind at that point that I wouldn’t say it as often.

I don’t THINK that Paul is Gay..I think he acts like that just to be funny.

Paul Money was married for twenty years, and he now has a NEW Girlfriend..Stacy J

see information below:

Sources say that recently fired ‘The Apprentice’ wannabe Stacie J. is dating comedian Paul Mooney. The 35-year-old Stacie J., who was terminated by Donald Trump after the other female contestants accused her of being crazy, attended the recent ‘BET Comedy Awards’ with Mooney, who is apparently in his mid-60s. “They held on to each other the entire night,” said a source. “If they’re not in love, they did a good job acting like it.” Mooney was married for nearly 20 years, and Stacie J. has apparently never been married. While their romance is the talk of Tinseltown now, a source familiar with the couple says they’ve been together for almost two years.

I am SOOOOOOOOOO glad Paul Mooney has decided to make a change. N*gger or N*gga, it is poison and despite our intention when we call each other that word, we are really speaking death to ourselves and don’t realize it.

For those who decide to try to ease up on the word, let me telll ya’ll something. Years ago I decided to stop using profanity, including the n-word. Trust me, it didn’t happen over night. In fact it took about two years before I reached the point where I found myself going throughout the entire day without cursing or saying the n-word. My point is, I had to start somewhere and I didn’t put pressure on myself to immediately stop a habit I had for years. It may take a little time to stop the n-word but it is worth it. It’s amazing just in casual conversation, how quickly people pick up that I don’t use profanity or use the n-word.

Go for it my people. I encourage all of us to try to be more aware of our use of the n-word. Good luck.

Product Description
Listening to this two-disc collection, you get a vivid picture of how Richard Pryor’s comic genius evolved. He went from the early Cosby-esque style of “Super Nigger” and “Prison Play” to the ‘hood humor of “Have Your Ass Home By 11:00″ and “Wino & Junkie.” Then came his razor-sharp socio-political observations in “Bicentennial Nigger” and “Africa,” and the intensely personal, highly publicized travails recounted in “New Year’s Eve,” “Freebase,” and “M.S.” Every comic working today owes a debt to this profane-yet-profound genius. Rhino’s two-disc Richard Pryor: The Anthology (1968-1992) is jam-packed with 26 of Pryor’s most outrageous routines gathered from his seven Warner albums and the Pryor archives. Over 2-hours of hilarity!

Why can’t we just drop all the labels and go back to “friend”, “family” and “neighbor”? Black people don’t want to be called “negros”! What’s up “my negros”? That just don’t work for me! hehe! Or, who wants to say, “look at them damn homosexuals”! I’d rather just say, “peep them damn faggots”! lol

It Hurts, I mean really Hurts my heart when I hear these children and teenagers using the word nigger (nigga, niggah, niggas, niggaz, nigg…Its All the SAME to me). They have no idea the pain that word has caused our parents and grandparents.

GO! GO! GO! I’m so proud of Paul!!!

***STANDING OVATION***

Oprah can talk until she’s blue in the face. The Black Congressional Caucus can beg and plead until their blue in the face. Al and Jesse can beg and preach until they are blue in the face.

Use of the “N” word will NOT end until people that rappers and young people can relate to begin to tell them it is wrong. I *GET* why some black people think it’s okay to use the word, but it AIN’T WORKING. There is nothing positive about being called the N-word, no matter how you spell/say it.

OK…I take that back, there was one funny thing that I’ve seen. I work on a predominantly white college campus (major university), and two white boys with their baseball caps twisted backwards were greeting each other, and one said to the other, “Whussup, my nigga?” As they embraced and gave each other dap like brothas do. OK, ya’ll…now, I SWEAR they were serious as a heart attack. I about fell the f**k out my chair when I saw that. I hate to admit it, but that was hella funny…

But back on a serious note, I support Paul and hope some of Hip Hop’s elite also jump on board, and realize the power they have to shape the minds of our young people. Bring back the word, “Mayne.” I love when brothas use that word. LOL Homie is a better substitute for the “N” word anyway.

First I’d like to say it’s a great thing that Mooney is doing. His reasons are quite genuine. However, I’d wish someone would also start campaigning against the misogynistic videos and music throughout our community as well. Secondly, although I don’t use the word “nigga” TOO often, I’m so sick and tired of white America trying control another aspect of our culture. Their only reason of objecting to the usage of the word is that they themselves cannot use it. I’m tired of them controlling what we say and do. Unless they can make a profit, somehow they will prevent someone from doing it.

Completely off topic: While we’re banning words, how about we abandon the word African-American. I don’t remember taking a vote on that word either. I’ve never been to Africa and hate being called that..ok I’m done!

If you take away the slurs and drug hype, there would be no hip-hop! Just ask JayZ and Diddy! Both owe their success to the drug, degrade and hoe culture! Diddy sponsors a comedy show that features at least a thousand slurs a minutes! Jigga was one of the original “crack” rappers!

Face it! We have no language of our own, so we digress in the presence of the man! Other cultures do it to, but they can “speaky”! Sure, Snoop tried to push “izzles” but hell, any eight grader can figure that $#!T! Ebonics is just as bad! Slavery stripped us of our language and the right to hold dear those “goodies” that God meant only for us!

So, we digress!

“In light of the whole Kramer debacle, comedian Paul Mooney is renouncing the n-word and has vowed never to use it in public again.” Interesting; operative words being “in public.” I wonder if those were Paul’s words or the reporter’s words. If it was his, that was cleverly stated. But what’s done in the dark….

Sahlina said: Completely off topic: While we’re banning words, how about we abandon the word African-American. I don’t remember taking a vote on that word either. I’ve never been to Africa and hate being called that..ok I’m done!

#47, I swear on everything I was thinking the same thing earlier this week. Who made that decision for us anyway. It was like one day we were “Black” and the next we were “African America”. WTF? I was fairly young when this change occured but I remember thinking, this sucks. Why am I limited to being African? What about my Irish roots, my British Roots, my Chinese Roots, my Belizian roots?? I know Africa is a continent but so is Asia, South America and Europe. Why aren’t all whites called European-Americans for that matter?

Whenever I have to fill out a survey and Black isn’t on there, I just check “OTHER.” I hate that Blacks continue to allow themselves to be marginalized through terms African American. And I’m even guilty of it in my writings because even when I have to write a paper that’s going to be seen my many I find myself writing “african american” versus black; as if black is the new nigga, nigger, niggerz, naggaz or whateva.

Good for Paul if he wants to erase that word from his vocab. I’m not knocking him for that, regardless of what context he used it in the past or how you used it to hurt other blacks in the past. The point is that he sees a need to make a change within himself. Who are we to say “Oh no Mr. Mooney. You’ve used the N-word a gazillion times towards your own people. You can never take it back or receive redemption.” If the man feels this change will make him a better human being, why should I hate on that?

Most rappers will NEVER stop using the N-word because guess what? THAT’S ALL THEY KNOW!!! But you ever hear a Jay-Z song with him calling another man “My brother?” Ever hear 50? Snoop? Ja-Rule? Look at their background. Rappers who spit from a social level or come from a different background may not have that hard a time Black Thought, Q-tip, Mos Def, Nas, maybe) but the rest??? I dunno, I’d be hard pressed to hear Luda come out with a song called Where My BROTHERS at?

@40 Uptowngirl and #43 Foxxy380, I know habits are hard to break, which is why it took me about 2 years to stop all together. But just like anything else, after a while you get used to it. After a while NOT using the word itself becomes a habit. While I was trying to stop, there were times when I had to make a concious effort not to say the word or use profanity, but eventually I didn’t have to make effort anymore. Not using those words became a habit.

Habits may be hard to break but that doesn’t mean they CAN’T be broken. I’m a living witness the habit of using the n-word can be broken.

I gotta admit, when I call my boy the first thing I say is “was up nigga!” but I’m going to stop that. Theres a time and place for that stuff, but unfortunately some of us don’t know when that is so maybe Mooney is right to get rid of the word altogether. I was in a public place recently and a blk dude on his cell (oblivious to everyone around him) kept calling his friend “nigga” without even noticing all the white people in business attire around him gasping and wincing everytime he said it. Needless to say I was embarrassed for our race, no wonder whites look all crazy at us.

As far as I’m concerned Nigger/Nigga is not referring to black people! It references an ignorant ass person. So whites, latins, asians, etc. can be niggas. Therefore the word doesn’t offend me because as far as I’m concerned my ex white supervisor was a straight up nigger/nigga.

I cant believe some people would take the time to write ‘hehe’ in a post when talking about such a serious subject. Theres not one thing thats funny about the use of the n-word. Not NEVER! Im sick and tired of hearing black people refer to each other as niggas/nigs/negroes/coloreds and every other derogatory word in the book. Everyone has a name, and its time we start using them!

I applaud Mr. Mooney for taking this stand. I’ve been called the n-word a few times in my life, and it’s not pleasant. It was also not pleasant in high school when I would hear white people using it like it was nothing. I dunno if they are trying to be down, or if they really don’t think much of the word, but I just wish it would disappear.

The day rappers like 50 Cent, Luda, and TI stop using the n-word, hell will freeze over.

Just a word to those who are deriding use of the term “African American.” Black people have been so completely and utterly STRIPPED of everything that makes us up, that you get black people making confused statements like, “I’m not African American. I’m American.”

There are three categories that are similar, but distinctly different: race, ethnicity and nationality.

Being “American” is not your race, that’s your NATIONALITY.

Our shared physical traits is our RACE, which ORIGINATED FROM, and which we SHARE WITH Africans.

Who we share our culture values with is our ETHNICITY. So, though, latinos have white skin and can have blue eyes, culturally, they are still hispanic (ever notice on an application or survey how they make a distinction between your race, and then they specifically ask if you are hispanic or latino)?

Being labeled African American is not offensive. There is no shame in being called what we are. It is a technically correct term, and we are not the only ones who use such terms. Go to South Philly where all the Italian shops are and those people consider themselves ITALIAN. Period. They don’t even say “Italian American.” Italian people call themselves Italian like they still live in Italy.

Of course, ALL PEOPLE are racially mixed, but you don’t see white people running around talking about my great grandmother was black, and my great, great aunt on my daddy’s side was 1/4 Indian, so I’m offended with you calling me White. We’re the only race of people who get “offended” at being what we are cause we’re “mixed.” Rigggggght. They look at us all the same. My husband is 1/2 white, 1/2 black, and trust…white people call him BLACK. They don’t claim him in any way. He’s been called the “N” word more than I have and I’m full black. I guess they want to MAKE SURE he knows that he is no part of them in their eyes.

I hate to see black people be ashamed of our roots.

I think it’s different. I mean with nigga it seems more of term for ppl calling out there friends like homie and stuff like that but using the word nigger now that’s a different story. The word nigger still holds alot of pain , so nigger shouldn’t be used at all someone using the word nigger is trying to hurt someone. They want the other person to get hurt by using nigger but with nigga it’s like a slang used to greet a friend.
I applause Paul Mooney for trying to better himself. Let’s see how long he last w/o saying the “n-word” or the “b-word”.

after reading everybody’s comment…And yall actually think he going to stop using the N word while he rather use heifer instead of bitch?Get out of here!If I’m wrong nigga is so much different from nigger.I actually picked up the word “nigga” from my mom side of the family and I don’t see nothing wrong with the word “Nigga” but however Nigger is different. The fact that Hip Hop uses it is because they can.If you don’t like they use it you can’t stop it so people stop being superman and let the people do them.Just don’t listen to it.Theres bigger and better issues to deal with than this word, its just a WORD (nigga) ! Now I can see nigger being ban.I don’t know call me young or whatever but come on what words have people stop using now and days?

Wifey said: Go to South Philly where all the Italian shops are and those people consider themselves ITALIAN. Period. They don’t even say “Italian American.” Italian people call themselves Italian like they still live in Italy.

————————-
Why then don’t we just call all of ourselves “AFRICAN”??? What’s the point of adding in American? Do we not know we’re in America? What are the African British calling themselves then? What about an “Africans” that were born and raised in Australia?

I personally am not ashamed of my heritage. But I am confused by your logic. You say, “Who we share our culture values with is our ETHNICITY. So, though, latinos have white skin and can have blue eyes, culturally, they are still hispanic (ever notice on an application or survey how they make a distinction between your race, and then they specifically ask if you are hispanic or latino)?” But, since “they” broke it down so far that heritage and ethnicity are subcategories, why aren’t their subcategories for “Whites” or “Caucasians”?

Maybe I wouldn’t have a problem with that terminology if it was fair across the board. I’ve never seen Latin-American on a government document. Nor have I ever seen Caucasian-American. If it’s good for one, make it good for all. Why restrict or limit me to the continent of Africa?

Guess Whites don’t have any ethnicity, huh?

I definitely applaud Paul Mooney. Now if Jay-Z could stop saying it maybe all these little hoppers would too (with a nod to the Wire, I personally like that word, so maybe I’ll start using that.) I wish that dude who has everyone throwing up Roc signs and replacing Cristal with Dom or whatever could use that same power to do something truly useful. I could rock with him so much more if he recognized his power with young people and used it constructively.

Well, good for you, Mr. Mooney. This isn’t anything new though. There have been several anti-N-word movements that, for the most part, have gone ignored. If people really want to support this movement, support more websites like www.abolishthenword.com, and don’t be afraid to speak out.

As for “African-American,” I agree that it is a technically correct term, but I think it came to such prominence due to other races not knowing how to refer to black people without said black people getting upset. Seriously, I know so many black people who immediately tense up or get offended whenever someone who’s not black calls someone “black” and yet also get offended when the term “African-American” is used. It’s as though some black people don’t know what should offend them, so they get offended by everything, thus other races rely on terms like “African-American” because it’s really the only politically correct term they can use. And it still gets them in trouble.

It’s high time we got over that. Seriously, we’ve been calling white people “white” since day 1 hundreds of years ago.

I cosign with Wifey, it seems that blacks are ashamed of calling themseleves African-American…

As for the word nigga, blacks have been using this word for so long, only when whites picked up on us calling ourselves “nigga” is when it became an issue. No, I’m not supporting the word, but there are so many more issues in the black community to focus on than to have so much effort to be put towards one word.

As for “bitch”, it’s really disrepectful for men and call women one. Then women get mad when men start treating them like a bitch! Ummm, I wonder why…

#60…I will never criticize someone for preferring to be called, “Black.” I just don’t understand BLACK people being offended by being called “African American,” and saying it’s somehow offensive or limiting.

Why is being called “African American” being marginalized? Do you think Americans who call themselves Puerto Rican, Mexican or Italian, instead of simply White or American are being marginalized?

Whites have the option to say, “I’m white” or “I’m Italian,” so why can’t we say, “I’m African American?” The only reason our shit is so complicated is because we didn’t exactly immigrate here like every other group of people (except the Indians).

We have been so BRAINWASHED over centuries, that as a race, we are actually SCARED of causing waves if we act too “different.” Some of us don’t want to associate ourselves with Africa, like it’s a disease. “I ain’t African.” Just because most of us have never been there does not erase the fact that we are of African origin. Somewhere in Africa, most of us have some distant cousins, aunts and uncles. But it scares us to even think about that fact because we don’t know anything about that country. It’s like blacks were “adopted” by America, and don’t know anything about our “real parents,” and we are COMFORTABLE with our “adopted parents.” Plus, our “adopted parents” have told us that their feelings get hurt when we act like we want to acknowledge our “real parents.” Haven’t they been good to us and given us everything we need? How could we betray them like that?

I’m sorry, I guess I just don’t agree with your point of view. I don’t see how it as “limiting” for us to call ourselves what we really are.

Hooray, we’re on the road to progress. The word ‘Nigger’ and all it’s different ways of saying and spelling it should be banned period–along with B_tches, Hoe$, and all the other derogatory terms Black Americans have labeled themselves with.

Meatloaf: I’m not overly concerned with how White people perceive us more than how we perceive ourselves. They’re going to think the way they think- wrong or not. But, I CAN affect how I, or the younger generations in my family, think about themselves.

How do we want to think of ourselves as Black Americans? Because the way we think of ourselves is the way others will perceive us.

I prefer Intelligent, Educated, and Articulate to dumbing ourselves out, I prefer Respectful to each other and others to loud and crass, I prefer Prosperous to poor and depending on the government, and the list goes on….

In addition, I prefer using the term Black American, because it defines who I am. Please remember that there are a lot of white people, who live in Johannesburg, who can define themselves as “African-Americans” also. For most of us, our heritage lines stem from various origins and not just Africa, so we really can’t just define ourselves as African-American. Think about it?
