CL’S BIG IN ‘06 SONG LIST!
Friday, December 22, 2006
You either love them, or what you hate them, but these are some of the most memorable songs (or artists) for ‘06. These are the songs that you couldn’t turn on the radio without hearing. From artist comeback songs, to songs that just were bumped in cars and clubs alike all day, every day. There was a lot of music to come out in ‘06, but this is just a look at some of the songs that we just couldn’t seem to stay away from, no matter how good or bad they were!
CASSIE - ME & U (DOWNLOAD)

She pretty much came out of nowhere, and blew up over night on MySpace. No matter how much we hate her, and how little talent she has, Cassie had the #1 song in the country and everyone was bobbing their head to the Ryan Leslie-produced single. Cassie’s album was released during the summer and debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts, proving that it doesn’t take talent to have a #1 album. Let’s see if she can twerk it out the second time around.
GNARLS BARKLEY - CRAZY (DOWNLOAD)

Cee-Lo Green and DJ Danger Mouse became the crazy imaginaries behind the vivid images and oddball sounds of the enigma that is Gnarls Barkley. They crossed boundaries and reached a huge audience with the single “Crazy” and it spread like wildfire. Even if you don’t know the group, you know the song. With huge success in the United States, and overseas, Gnarls Barkley and their album “St. Elsewhere” were definitely big in ‘06.
BEYONCE feat. JAY-Z - DEJA VU (DOWNLOAD)

The world was definitely talking when it was found out that Beyonce was to release a second solo album in the fall, and was in a frenzy over what the first single would sound like. Would it top the success of “Crazy In Love?” Would the actual album live up to the success of her previous multi-platinum debut, “Dangerously In Love?” Fans, stans and “haters” alike (especially on CL) had something to say when “Deja Vu” dropped, and you couldn’t turn on the radio without hearing it.
T.I. - WHAT YOU KNOW (DOWNLOAD)

T.I. definitely proved himself to be King of the South this year with his fourth studio album, “King.” I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t escape the song or video for “What You Know” this year. T.I. had a successful album and single, as well as a movie this year, proving that he could crossover into the mainstream as one of this year’s premiere hip hop artists. He put the south on the map without all the snapping.
NELLY FURTADO & TIMBALAND - PROMISCUOUS (DOWNLOAD)

With the help of Timbaland, Nelly Furtado randomly had the #1 pop album in the United States, making her first album to debut at the #1 spot. This was due largely to the success of this summer’s hit, “Promiscuous” which was constantly bumped in cars and clubs. Surprisingly, even urban radio ate the song up and gave it spins. Nelly Furtado definitely gained herself a new audience with the album “Loose.”
YUNG JOC - IT’S GOING DOWN (DOWNLOAD)

No matter how much I hate to admit, this was one of those songs that just goes down in history as one of the most addictive songs in ‘06. No matter how bad we wanted to fight it, when “It’s Going Down” came on, ALL of us were doing that motorcycle dance. At every party, in every club, in every car, this song was played at some point, and no matter how sick of it we are, we still continue to get our motorcycle on…
LETOYA - TORN (DOWNLOAD)

Miss LeToya Luckett gave Beyonce a run for her money this summer with her hit single, “Torn,” produced by Teddy Bishop with the classic sample of “You Are Everything.” Although this wasn’t the first single Toya’d hit with for radio, it caught on like wildfire, and people were pleasantly surprised when they found out that it was Miss Luckett. “Torn” was hot on the charts and allowed LeToya’s self-titled debut solo album to appear at #1 it’s first week on the charts.
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE - SEXYBACK (DOWNLOAD)

Not only was it the comeback year for Timbaland, with several hit singles on his hand, but Justin Timberlake definitely came back hard when the clubs and cars heard “SexyBack.” Regardless of the infamous Nipplegate scandal, Justin Timberlake got all the love with his second solo album, “FutureSex/LoveSounds.” But as we saw, Justin got a little big-headed after recieving his “ghetto pass” and “street cred” back, after trying to call Janet and Prince out on an unrelease track with Nelly Furtado.
LUPE FIASCO - KICK, PUSH (DOWNLOAD)

Lupe Fiasco garnered himself much success on his critically acclaimed debut album “Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor.” Skateboarders, back-packers and oddballs alike were highly impressed by Lupe’s ode to skateboarding and the struggles of being an outsider. Although “Food & Liquor” wasn’t as successful as people thought it would be on the charts, Lupe’s song was definitely one that people will remember in ‘06.
CHAMILLIONAIRE - RIDIN’ DIRTY (DOWNLOAD)

Texas has been on the map for a couple of years, with representers Mike Jones, Slim Thug, and Paul Wall, just to name a few, but Chamillionaire blew up this year with “Ridin’ Dirty.” So much so that Weird Al did his own spoof (c’mon, I know ya’ll have hard “White & Nerdy”). I’ve learned on thing about Chamillionaire since the success of this single: you either love him or hate him. I’ve never heard anything in between with him. But he definitely got those radio spins this year, and I guess that’s all it’s about!
HONORABLE MENTIONS…
These songs also garnered a lot of attention in ‘06. Some are fairly new and will probably carry on into early ‘07, but some were just the jam during ‘06 that we couldn’t get enough of. Make sure you check these out too!
Ciara - Promise (download)
Jay-Z - Show Me What You Got (download)
E-40 - Tell Me When to Go (download)
Janet Jackson & Nelly - Call On Me (download)
Kelis feat. Too $hort - Bossy (download)
Of course there were more memorable music moments of the ‘06, but I decided to highlight these for whatever reasons. I guess when I thought about ‘06, these were the songs that came to mind. Let me know what was on your lists!

I agree with the list except for Lupe and Beyonce…….”Deja Vu” and “Kick push” were not really big songs in 06. if anything “Irreplacable should have been on this list, not “deja vu doo doo”. Just my opinion.

Deja Vu shouldn’t have been on the list because it wasn’t really anything new from Beyonce…it reminded me a lot of Crazy In Love, especially with Jay Z. I think Irreplaceable should have been added at the bottom.

ridin’ dirty
kick push
Crazy
Torn

Bossy
and that Paula Deanda gurl, I was feeling some her her teeny-bopper tracks, it was cute.
“Come enjoy the life, baby take ride, I just wanna vibe of you, you.” ahhhhh thats my “pomise” right there! ciara is the “ISH baby” for that song! everybody w/ music ears knows it and luvs it.

the list is direct and on point. i love lupe, i wish him so much success and i truly hopes he get it, because i’m pretty sure he deserves it and i’m also contet with myself because i went out and brought the album, which was truly worth it. happy for toya, and i love nelly furtado’s new song:it’s straight ill.gnarls barkley is that group and cassie has absoulutely no talent, that’s why i signed the petition for no more cassie, so far it looks like its working, at least i haven’t heard from her in a minute.

DEJA POO? IF YOU SAY SO….THAT SONG HARDLY GOT LOVE IN THE DC AREA. IT STARTED WITH A STRONG FIRST WEEK ONLY BECAUSE IT WAS BEYONCE’S “COME BACK” SONG BUT WENT NOWHERE FAST. WHEN PEOPLE THINK ABOUT THE SONGS OF 2006, ONLY BEY STANS WILL THINK DEJA POO WAS A STAND OUT. IRREPLACEABLE SHOULD DEFINITELY BE ON THE LIST INSTEAD.

I also think Bossy should’ve gotten more than an honorable mention and here is HIPS DON’T LIE? I couldn’t escape that song even if i wanted to, lol. Kick Push was a nice departure from the rest, but didn’t have nearly as much play, neither did Deja Vu, so maybe they could be replaced. overall I’m liking the lists for 2006 though:)

Although I personally liked Deja Vu, I think if any of the Beyonce singles was a huge hit, it was “Irreplacable” she came back hard with that one.
I also think this was the year when songs ruled for a week or two and then died. It was like you had the hottest record for two week and then it was a wrap.
I didn’t really get a real summer song…but then I wasn’t out in the clubs or listening to the radio much.
However some songs did penetrate
It’s Going Down
What You Know
Promiscuous (I dug it I can’t lie, even though I think Nelly changed her whole game up to sell records, well, it worked.)
Definitely think “Be Without You” was a huge hit that y’all missed. That ruled the airwaves this year.
That’s my .02 for what it’s worth.

Can we please read and register the information inside of our brains before we jump to post something? It’s not about the songs being #1 or even good for that matter, it’s about them being played non stop on the radio and on television. One song may be played more in one area, state, region whatever than another. I live in New York and Me and U & Torn was played heavily but it might not have been that way in Boston or Los Angeles…Get it now?! Ok still don’t? How about just because you loathe the song doesn’t mean it’s not played over and over again into oblivion, infact those are the songs that seem to be played the most! If you still don’t get it then no one can help you…

the list seems alright,of coz you’re gonna have the usual hating and bitchin from the typical beyonce haters(even though they won’t admit it), deja vu definately belongs on that list(it got major airplay both domestically and internationally), in fact i would add “check on it and irreplaceable” on that list too, both #1 songs,COI was #1 for 5wks and right now irreplacable is mudering the charts right now.

I have no qualms with Jayonce but I am sick and tired of the both of them monopolizing THE THREE Urban Radio Stations in Philly……It feels like Chinese Torture….First, you would hear a song by Jay-Z, then a song by Beyonce, AND then a song with BOTH of THEM TOGETHER!! Excuse me while I go to the bathroom and stab myself in the neck with a pencil!

The only songs that I liked from that list were Kelis’ “Bossy” and T.I. “What You Know”, and I kind of liked Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” as well.
Initially, I liked “Promise” by Ciara, also, but now I’m getting sick of it.
The others songs weren’t that great to me, but it is true that they were played to near death on the radio and on the music TV networks.

Ok, So I Finally Saw Dreamgirls… And SOHH Soulful Top 5
Yesterday I went to the “Dreamgirls” Roadshow. You know the one where you pay $25 for this Broadway theater effect. The $25 includes a 50 page color booklet, no previews, an authentic movie poster and some other random swag.
I’ll just break down what I thought of people’s performances.
- Eddie Murphy: Amazing.
- Jamie Fox: Good job
- Anika Noni Rose: My favorite in the movie. She deserves more praises.
- Jennifer Hudson: Great voice, not an actress. She steals her scenes because the movie was written to glorify that role. Amongst the ensemble cast she was just OK. Great voice, but playing the role of an angry black woman doesn’t garner the acclaim she is getting. And I don’t begrudge her any success, but I expected a whole lot more based on her hype.
Beyonce: Not as bad as they say. She nails the essence of Diana Ross. Nails it. Not Sasha, not Beyonce but Diana. And dammit if pretty is a talent, the she got it…. hands down.
The other members of the cast did their thing as well. But to all those that are in love with J. Hud and throwing daggers at Bey need to slow their roll and think about it first. Both Jennifer and Beyonce are playing themselves essentially. So if you see this film don’t let your heartstrings for the character or the characters triumph keep you from seeing that everyone carried their weight and Bey is far from just a pretty extra.

What some of you are failing to realize is that these are not personal lists of your favorites but overall popular songs. Mary J. should have been on it and ne-yo, and jim jones definiyely should have got an honorable mention since jay z did, and lets remember keyshia cole too and deja vu wasnt even that big it was just a lot of controversy around the video! O and Bossy even tho her album flopped!

These are the joints I hated:Sexyback and Promiscuos sounded too commercial for me,despised Cassie’s Me and You why it was popular is beyond me.Lupe F was just plain stupid. The songs I did like is: What you know,Krazy,Torn,It’s going down,Riding dirty and as much as I hate to admit I liked Dejavu don’t care for the artist though. I am a little pissed Sean Paul’s Temperature or We be burning nah de de but it alright.

Love Beyonce, but Deja Vu was a horrible song.
Lupe Fiascos song barely got played on the L.A radio stations.
Sexyback was my ring tone for almost 6 months! Justin Timberlake has been my favorite white boy for years!
Cassie may not have talent, but Me and You bumped in my car, at my prom, graduation party, and still bumps in my dorm room! However, let’s not get it twisted, her album never debuted at number 1. It actually flopped! Oh well, can’t blame her for trying! LOL
Promiscuous was my song, but I agree with he person who said she would be nothing without Timbaland!
Anyway, this is my list:
1. Justin Timberlake-Sexyback
2. Beyonce-Irreplaceable
3. Jim Jones- We fly high
4. Rihanna -SOS
5. Panic at the disco- I write sins not tragedies
6. Cassie - Me and You
7. Chamillionaire- ridin’ dirty
8. E-40 - Tell me when to go
9. Heather Headley - In my mind
10. Lil Scrappy- Money in the Bank

List sounds about right…I know I must have heard Ne*Yo - So Sick a million times in a million remixes, I was “so sick” of that song, along with Cassie’s Me and U.
I also heard a lot of Mary J. Blige’s Be Without U and Ray J’s One Wish! Oh and please let’s not forget about the Pussy Cat Dolls, all of their songs this year were HITS. Again I’m going by the shit I heard everytime I turned on the radio…EVERYTIME….*cringes and rocks*

I liked “Deja Vu” I don’t know why people think its so damn bad.
“Crazy” was good but annoying as hell
“Me & U” had one of my favorite beats this year.
“It’s Goin Down” sucked so damn badly that whoever likes it needs to go sit in a white room in a straitjacket with Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt playing over and over again.
“Promiscuous” got tired real quickly but I still like it
“Torn” is one of the most underrated songs of the year.
“Sexyback” sucked real hard.
“Kick, Push” was one of my favorite rap songs of the year, he kept my interest in music.
“Ridin’ Dirty” had all the white people gettin happy.
All the honorable mentions were actually good especially “Promise” and “Bossy”

I don’t think I listened to 97% of the songs in this post this year.
My top releases for the year include:
The Roots - Game Theory,
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black,
Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine
Dave Hollister - Book of David Vol 1 (excellent gospel CD)
Joi - Tennessee Slim is the Bomb
Christina Aguilera - Back to Basics
Madonna - Confessions on a Dance Floor (yep)
John Legend - Once Again
a lukewarm nod to Ne-Yo — he’s a good songwriter with a stupid stage name.

I think people who say that Nelly Furtado “changed up her style” are WHACK! If you knew anything about her, or perhaps owned her first album, you would see that Nelly F. is the epitome of “Eclectic”. Her music taste varies and she’s influenced by all types of music. On her first album, she had hip-hop type songs, as well as spanish, portuguese, folk-music, etc. Even her current album is an eclectic mix. She is not even spanish, yet has recorded several songs in Spanish like “Te Busque” and “No Hay Igual”. Some artists, you can really just tell if you pay attention to their music and their interviews, videos, etc that they are just puttin music out there tat reflects them, and she’s one of them. Another example would be Robin Thicke, yeah he’s white, but his music has soul and its jazzy, because those are his true musical influences and he just likes to express that. Then you have a loser like Justin Timberlake, who is just eating off of black people’s music, ’cause urban musc is becoming soooo mainstream, and that’s where the money is at. He’s throwing disses at legends like Janet & Prince…. are you kidding me? His “new” sound on FutureSex/LoveSounds, sounds like some shit Janet & Prince already did. The song FutureSex/LoveSounds sounds exactly like a damn prince song… His falsetto voice is soooo Prince…. but anyway these are my thoughts. The list is ok. It really lacks other important songs of 2006. But whatever….. if it sucks, that’s Brian’s fault for not doing all his research or something…

I don’t know what all the hype is when it comes to JT. I loved his first solo album and videos, but the songs I’ve heard from his new album, I’m just not impressed. And I’m not saying this b/c he dissed my girl Janet. BTW what did he say about Prince?

ID theft growing concern for MySpace users
By GARY GENTILE
BW Exclusives
MySpace devotee Kary Rogers was expecting to see a gut-busting video when a friend from the popular online hangout messaged him a link. First, though, he was directed to a page where he was supposed to re-enter his password. Rogers realized that someone was trying to steal his information, and he didn’t take the bait. At best, he would be spammed with junk e-mails; worse, the Web thief might steal his real-life identity.
“I immediately went back and changed my password,” said Rogers, 29, a network analyst for Mississippi State University in Starkville, Miss.
MySpace bills itself as a “place for friends.” Increasingly, it is also a place for unfriendly attacks from digital miscreants on the prowl, luring users to sexually explicit Web sites, clogging mailboxes with spam messages and playing on the trust users have when speaking to “friends” to obtain passwords that could lead to identity theft.
Managing the risks that come with rapid growth is an enormous challenge for MySpace, now part of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. media conglomerate. The site can’t afford to drive away users, who might defect to one of a growing number of alternative sites, or advertisers, who pay top dollar to reach the growing MySpace audience.
Last month, MySpace inched past Yahoo Inc. in U.S. page views, recording 38.7 billion, according to comScore Media Metrix.
A key reason behind the popularity is its ease. Simply by adding a few lines of computer code, users can create elaborate profiles and personalize them with photos, music and video. A host of communication tools makes it easy to send messages to one person or a whole list of friends, who number into the thousands for some of the more popular MySpace users.
Those same tools can be used by vandals to make it look like an innocent user has sent spam to the same long list of “friends.”
Programmers are writing scripts that take advantage of specific features on MySpace, including “friend request,” where one user asks to be added to another user’s list of buddies.
One recent scam works this way: A spammer posts a number of phony profiles featuring pictures of cute women, often promising nude photos. A “friend request” with the woman’s photo is sent to hundreds of users.
Once the fake profile loads, a blue screen descends, saying the profile is protected by the “MySpace Adult Content Viewer.” Unsuspecting users who try to download the viewer instead get a worm that installs adware on their computers.
Social-networking sites make good targets because of the implicit level of trust users have when they’re interacting with “friends.”
“The ongoing interaction lowers your reservations and security barriers,” said Marc Gaffan, an expert in online fraud and security at RSA, the security division of EMC Corp.
MySpace, which News Corp. bought last year for some $580 million, has recognized the threat and is stepping up security efforts, said Hemanshu Nigam, its chief security officer.
The company is rapidly expanding its team of software engineers, lawyers and other experts who look for suspicious activity, educate users on how to prevent attacks and go after the worst offenders.
Under Nigam’s direction, the company recently formed a Content Assurance Team. Employees post fake profiles on the site, pretending to be vulnerable teens or clueless adults. The profiles are designed to keep tabs on everything from sexual predators to spammers.
MySpace also is preparing to launch a more aggressive education campaign, urging users to take care and use tools that restrict the viewing of their profiles to only trusted sources.
When all else fails, the company is also files civil suits and is increasing cooperation with law enforcement officials.
“We’re trying to take away the ‘cool’ factor of trying to attack us,” Nigam said.
Nigam came to MySpace after stints as a federal prosecutor specializing in child pornography and computer crime cases. He also led security efforts at Microsoft Corp. and the Motion Picture Association of America.
MySpace hired him in May to strengthen security and safety efforts at the site and other Internet properties owned by Fox Interactive media.
“Security is a top priority because it’s critical for our community of users and for our business partners,” Nigam said. “If advertisers feel uncomfortable being on a site that is seen as not as secure, not as safe, then we lose revenue.”
So far, no major damage has been done on the site, although some users, increasingly annoyed by the fake friends and messages, are seeking other social networking alternatives.
“I don’t have this problem on Facebook,” Rogers said, referring to another popular site.
The Internet has weathered several threats over the years, but as users move on, so do the attackers.
Writers of malicious software used to count primarily on e-mail recipients to click on attachments to spread their wares. As e-mail recipients got more savvy, the writers looked to automate the process by exploiting vulnerabilities in e-mail programs, browsers and the Windows operating system from Microsoft Corp.
As those security holes get closed, virus writers are looking elsewhere, including social-networking sites, attractive in part because of their size.
“It’s where the activity is and the attackers play the percentages,” said David Cole, director of security response at Symantec Corp. “They go after the largest market share where there is the most activity.”

I thought Busta Rhymes’ Touch It would have been on the list…with all those remixes. It was popular thru-out the summer though.

people seem to forget that this isn’t the “personal preference list” . all of these songs were HUGE this year. except, i really don’t remember deja vu being that popular, or maybe it’s just where i live where it wasn’t, not to be rude to what you’ve posted, but irreplaceable was WAYYY bigger than deja vu. otherwise, i think it’s a pretty accurate list

I couldnt even begin to name memorable songs if I tried. I’d get confused. But, this was Snap Music’s year. As well, it was the ULTIMATE collabo yr for many artists.
Next yr, I’d like to hear:
(1) Beyonce collaborate w/ other artists BESIDES Jiggaman, Michelle, Kelly, & Solange
(2) D4L come out w/ another hit….where did they go??
(3) More Konvict music from Akon
(4) More Snoop, R. Kelly, Usher, & Musiq hit the airwaves
(5)An album where Monica sings about “grown” up issues in a “grown-up”, mature way
(6) Chris Brown do more vocally
(7) Bow Wow stfu
(8) Ciara stfu (I think that ‘07 will be Ciara’s year…she will become the new SWSNBN…and we will all be fans, stans, or “haters”)
(9) NO MORE CLINIQUE HAPPY COMMERCIAL SONGS WRITTEN BY NE-YO FOR RHIANNA
(10) More Ne-Yo
Happy Holidays! BB2morrow!

I must be in the minority, because I actually liked most of Fergie’s cd. She actually does have a vocal range when she’s not trying to ‘rap’. She needs to stay in her lane when it comes to that, but there are a few good songs on that cd. I’d take Fergie over Cassie 8 days a week.

#154 I doubt that 2007 will be Ciara’s year, seeing how the poor girl can’t sing. Her voice is so weak. She hasn’t really improved vocally since her last album. I would like to see Ne-Yo get more recognition and also some vets who are underdogs like Monica, whose recent album was hot…very r&b unlike Beyonce who’s album was pure garbage. And also Mya who alot of people sleep on..she has a new album droppin in 2007.Mya is one of the hottest dancers out right now and she has a very nice voice.she can sing in different ranges and tones unlike some female singers out..and don’t even say Ciara is…lol

I think the list is missing “Unfaithful”… Rihi did that!
Coulda done without “Torn” though… I saw that girl on Apollo (yes, on a Saturday… I’m a good kid) & was NOT impressed.
Congrats to Chamillionare… big year for Htown! He’s a really nice guy, too… I met him, he’s really down to earth. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer person.
