The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the Nominations for the 64th Golden Globe awards today and many black stars were on the ballot.
In summary, Will Smith and Forest Whitaker each picked up Best Actor nods, for The Pursuit of Happyness and The Last King of Scotland, respectively, while Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson each picked Best Supporting Actor/Actress nods for Dreamgirls. Also, Chiwetel Ejiofor has a double nomination, one in the Best Actor (Musical/Comedy) category, for Kinky Boots and in the Best Actor (mini-series) category for, Tsunami, The Aftermath, and his co-star Sophie Okonedo was nominate in the Best Actress Category. Michael Ealy was nominated in the best actor in a mini-series made for TV. Beyonce Knowles, also has two nominations – Best Actress (Musical/Comedy), for Dreamgirls and Best Song (Listen), for Dreamgirls (she is nominated with Henry Krieger, Anne Preven, Scott Cutler). Prince was nominated for the song “THE SONG OF THE HEART”, for the movie Happy Feet.

finally re-read your post adn i sooooo agree with you. ive been to 2 screenings already and you’re soo right. i see how the nominations go now. beyonce does deserve everything for the screen time and jennifer di act her ass off for teh supporting role. either way, both ladies deserve an award.
Beyonce got nominated simply because she is BEYONCE!
However, I saw a screening yesterday and was actually impressed by how much her acting skills have improved.
The nomination is still questionable! I highly doubt she will actually win the award…..but then again she is BEYONCE, so who knows.

As for the nominations, there’s no way Beyonce or Jennifer are gonna win. Their both amateurs amongst regulars come Oscar season. And the Golden Globes has nominations for actors in musicals and comedies, whereas the oscars don’t. So oscar nominations are a mix of the best of both drama and musical/comedy

#177 That is not a fact there have been plenty of Academy Award winners who have won that were considered Amateurs. I’m not saying that Either of them are going to win or lose. I’m just saying WHOEVER gave the best performance SHOULD win.
Anna Paquin one an OSCAR for Best Supporting Actress for her FIRST film “The Piano” and she was also the youngest to ever win one. She plays Rogue in the X-men. So it doesn’t matter how long you have been in the game it is the BEST performance that should win and the Academy has awarded newcomers before.

First of all YOU stated clearly that Deena was the lead role you just didn’t mention that she was also considered for the lead role. Furthermore, it does not matter if there have been changes from the play to the movie of course there are changes it is a movie not a play. It is still the same concept. So don’t back track and say you were merely stating that Sheryl Ralph was considered also, because you i.e. Sheryl Ralph to support your statement that Deena was the lead role, not that she was ALSO considered a lead role, but that she was the lead role. sorry it took so long for me to respond I was working and didn’t have time to hit up the loop for long yesterday but it’s an expose on what is going on in the middle east and how there is an uprising up NAZI Islamists and they are trying to wipe out Israel and all jews. Though it is overseas is does effect us. ANd they were showing the hezballah news cast and what they are brainwashing the ppl over there to think about us as americans and israel to enrage a war and breed hate from people there. Why must we always be so quick to bring our own people down? Some of you people are acting like these awards are ever given to deserving actors and actresses in the first place?
These awards are 1part talent & 2 parts BUZZ!
Grant it there are some deserving actors & actresses who get honored every year, but there are plenty of other MEDIOCRE people who get awards –over and over and over again and we NEVER questions their talent!
While I’m not on the Bee bandwagon and I certainly see the work of her management and movie studio playing out in her getting a nomination – I can’t be mad at her. She’s doing what white actresses have done for years. This is strictly business and her and her father know how to play the Hollywood game and make sure she continues to catapult into super stardom. White Hollywood has done this for years and while we let them slide and consider their nominations WARRANTED, we hold Bee up to a greater level of scrutiny? These are awards…it’s Hollywood…it’s aIl fluff. For most it’s just business and for some it’s actually about the body of work.
I’m sorry, if Scarlett Johanson (who is painful to watch act) and Teri Hatcher can be nominated for golden globes, why can’t Bee?

Ooh…and instead of asking why Bee and not Angela Basset, we need to ask why Meryl Streep and not Angela Basset. We act as if we have one reserved spot for black actresses we all have to fight each other for. Meryl Streep is one of my all time favorite actress, but if you ask me there are plenty of black actresses who could and have blown her out the box but rarely get the chance to showcase their talent in meaningful roles because they barely exist for us. Given the choices black actors have for roles, it’s a wonder that there were so many that found REAL work this year. Hats off to my faboulous, talented, black peoples! Do the damn thang!!!

4got to add. It’s there’s one nomination I am mad at it’s Bee nom. for Listen. When is someone going to call her out on these writing credits. She’s credited for Lyrics and MUSIC? Are you serious? I know it’s in a singers best interest to get writing credit for the sake of royalties, but you can just change three words in a song and say you WROTE it. It only bothers me because it’s soooo dishonest and then she has the nerve to go on and on about the songwriter she is. She’s not even humble enough to just collect her royalties and chill. I know a lot of other singers do this, but this is out of control.
It’s like an actor improvising a scene and acting for screenwriting credits…lol (I’m sure daddy Knowles already tried that one!)

I would like to say that i disagree with you #73..Anyone could not just play the role. I think that Jennifer Hudson should get the respect she deserves for stepping into such a huge role and holdin it down. For Example do u think Ashanti could of played Effie? No. So if for some reason you dont like Jennifer Hudson say that, but dont try to take away from her talent.
Um… one we all know Bey is not the best actress around. And just b/c we know that does not mean we love her any less. Just not what we really want from her. It is most definitely a business, and there are several factors that play into how a person becomes a star and an award winner.

If a person deserve the praise they’ll definitely get it. But if there’s some question, then that needs to be stated, too.
We want the proper people representing, not just some random talentless person.

Now I will admit I have not seen a lot of these movies, that are being nominated for the Globes but I DO plan on seeing Dreamgirls and The pursuit of Happiness as well as Blood Diamonds,
HOWEVER I am just happy that the powers that be decided to recognize all minorities and not just the ususal
white suspects. Now as for Beyonce getting nominated for the award i think it’s obvious that it is noted as being a good role, wheter or not she did a GOOD job has yet to be seen because I have not seen the moive, AND there is no guarantee that she will even get nominated for an oscar, the Globes are supposed to be a precursor not the ACTUAL SAME PEOPLE get nominated, and I’m mean she’s up against Renee Zellwegger, Annette Bening, (previous GG award winners) and Fucking Meryl Streep!!!!!! I am so happy about all the black nominations…HOPEFULLY Beyonce will prove herself, I am keeping my fingers crossed as well as J.Hud. This could open so many doors for black actors/actresses, we should all go out and support this movie so Hollywood will be more motivated to write better scripts for our black people. Most black actors, ESPECIALLY black actresses are unable to prove theirselves due to the content that is written. They either in some movie about blacks killing blacks, or being a hoe, or a lough mouth chicken head…you can’t really blame them completely because that’s what roles are out there.
Beyonce is very talented and I hope she pulls it off. I am tired of Halle Berry being one of the only people able to get non-stereotypical roles. Angela Bassett has done her part to pave the way. I love Angela!

HOLLYWOOD – Pop star Beyonce Knowles was desperate to land the lead role of Effie in Dreamgirls, but was forced to take a smaller part because the director wasn’t convinced she could act.
Despite appearances in comedies Goldmember and The Pink Panther, Knowles couldn’t convince director Bill Condon she would be able to tackle the dramatic role–which eventually went to Jennifer Hudson.
Knowles insists she was happy to take the smaller part to prove her talent as an actress, saying, “I’m already a star. I already have nine Grammys. Everyone knows I can sing.
“I did this because I wanted people to know that I can act and I can play someone so different from myself.”
The “Irreplaceable” singer admits she would have loved to have sung Effie’s show-stopping number “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” and would have gladly gained weight for the role.

She explains, “I wish I could have gained 20 pounds and played Effie. I absolutely would have, but Bill didn’t even believe that I could be Deena. So imagine if I would’ve said, ‘Bill, I want to be Effie.’
But Knowles has high praise for her costar’s performance, adding, “Jennifer Hudson had such pressure. First of all, never being in a film and never having done an album and still having to live up to those expectations, she did incredible.”
When is Beyonce ever going to go solo on ANYTHING? She is nominated for best song (Listen), “WITH” Henry Krieger, Anne Preven, Scott Cutler. Everything the girl does involves someone else (the real talents). Every grammy is in collaboration with someone. Every song she supposedly writes is co-written by someone else. The girls obviously rides on other peoples’ talents.
