JAMES BROWN VIEWING AT THE APOLLO THEATER

jb1.jpg

Family members stand by James Brown’s casket for his viewing that was held yesterday, at the Apollo Theater. Brown, who shaped American rhythm-and-blues, funk and disco genres for a half-century and was a charter inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, died of complications from pneumonia in the state capital Atlanta, Georgia, on Christmas. He was 73.

Just a heads up, one more picture of him in the casket is after the jump.

  2. Bren

I agree #1 and that purple suit is not a good look. But I’m proud of the man.

  3. EB

R.I.P Mr. Brown. i also dont like the way they made him up

  4. RIP James Brown… I know this is wrong but why is he looking like The Joker…

  5. Tanisha

they should have called me i would have done his hair james was known for the flips-hate the suit-james was fly people!! who handled this?????

  6. Erica

Wow! James Brown is an ORIGINAL show stopper! Come on, yall know he would have worn that same suit, silver shoes and white gloves to the show he was to perform on New Year’s Eve. That was just him. I myself wondered who in the world was going to do his hair. I think he looks like himself her in the photos. They have put him a way very well. I do think he will be proud. Who else in this world will be able to have a 24 karat gold casket.. Really?? Without the likes of James Brown there would not have been a Prince, Michael Jackson, Usher, and whoever else that follows behind him.

  7. How are ya’ll gonna talk about a dead person’s clothes, hair and make-up? Silly I tell ya.
Anyway I am glad to see so many turn out in respects for the Godfather of Soul.

  8. WAAA? why did they do that to him!? R.I.P james we all loved you

  9. Ms.Sultry

@ #6-I was thinkining the same damn thing…so inconsiderate! RIP Mr James “Hardest working man in show biz” Brown!!!!!!!

  10. His wife that passed away used to do his hair. The dye is very dark. But I think he looks good, just a little dry.

  11. moxpoe1

RIP – Like sharpton said, I didn’t expect him to die. He definetly had enough life n spirit to share with all of us…..and he did with his music and dancing.

He looks like himself, ready to perform again execpt only he’s sleeping. But, they could have at least laid his signature hair!

The casket? Gold?…they better bury him above ground, graverobbers still exist.

  12. @#6, ERICA:

I agree about the purple suit. The man went out the same way he came in. A “Show Stopper”…..Nothing quiet about JB.
If the put him in a conservative black suit, it would have been fake.

    kind.
    RIP JB

I am happy to see that masses of people came out to bid the “God Father” farewell. He was not only a musical genius he has bestowed to the world music and served as an inspiration for Black America. He will be soarly missed. as a childI would often see James Brown when visiting my family in Agusta Gorgia! I shed a tear for the Godfather and pray for his spirit in hopes that he raches the pearly gates and is welcomed by his Lord and Savior.

  14. I was hoping to see a pic of James Brown in the casket…I dunno what it is about seeing famous ppl in a casket that intersest me. R.I.P. There would be no hip hop without James Brown. He changed the world of music forever!

  18. R.I.P Soul Brother #1
BTW Did yall hear they had to drive him in a van from Georgia to NY because they couldn’t get a plane for him? That’s some ish. All these rappers and what not w/planes and the one who started it all has to drive in a van? WTF!! SMH DAMN

  19. I was saying the same thing about how he doesnt like like himself. but then i realized something he doesnt look like how we are use to seeing him in the spotlight he might have looked like this at home. you know he wore alot of makeup and stuff when he was out in public and performing but underneath all that he could have very well looked liked that. I think he looks more his age and natural in the casket then he did in life. he might have looked like that early in the morning.

  20. LADYBUG

lawd first luther then lou rawls then rick then gerald and now james everbody droping off and we gonna be stuck with pretTy ricky and omarion DAMN DAMN DAMN!!!!!!

  21. ROBIN

I KNOW WE GET OUR JOAN ON AND HAVE NO CUT CARDS ON PEOPLE ON CL BUT DO SOME OF YOU HAVE ANY SENSE OR RESPECT? HE LOOKS MARVELOUS!! HE LOOKS LIKE HIMSELF. HIS LEGEND WILL LIVE ON IF THE ORIGIONAL MUSIC PAVE MAKERS KEEP IT GOING AND NEVER LET HIM SPIRITUALLY DIE. I GREW UP ON JAMES BROWN HE “IS” NOT “WAS” THE MAN. R.I.P. GOD FATHER.

  22. ms_mac1

He looks really “good” (??) I just hate seeing people in caskets.

  23. Anastacia

Not that I am being disrespectful by any means but that doesn’t look anything like him! His hair looks bad and he wore more makeup than that when he was alive! That funeral home did a horrible job! That still doesn’t change who James Brown was but that funeral home is WRONG WRONG WRONG! The suit is fine because he dressed like that everyday!

  24. bklyn0423

    RIP,James Brown
My condolences to the Brown family. We lost a very talented and well respected entertainer and pioneer of black music.

  25. Akai

He looks like a dead california raisin.

  26. bklyn0423

  27. nIKKI

Damn some of u even talk out a dead man WOWWWWWW

  28. CALIDIVA

SOME PEOPLE ARE YOUNG AND IGNORANT. SHOW SOME TYPE OF RESPECT. I’M SURE YOUR MOTHER TOUGHT YOU “IF YOU DON’T HAVE ANYTHING NICE TO SAY, DON’T SAY SHIT AT ALL”. FOR THOSE OF YOU WITH NEGATIVE THINGS TO SAY, ESPECIALLY @25, YOU SHOULD FIRST PRAY THAT YOU MAKE IT TO LIVE THAT LONG AND SECOND WE ALL WILL ONE DAY LAY IN THAT SAME POSITION. DEAD AND LEAVING A FAMILY BEHIND TO GRIEVE. WHEN YOUR BLOOD IS DRAINED AND YOUR BODY IS FILLED WITH FORMALDEHYDE, METHANOL AND ETHANOL. HOW WILL YOU LOOK? YOUNG DUMMY. I TAKE SHIT LIKE THIS PERSONAL. WHEN YOU SUFFER LOSSES, LIKE I HAVE. IGNORANT PEOPLE WILL PISS YOU OFF. LEAVE THE NEGATIVITY FOR BEY AND JAY OR JERMAINE AND JANET. FOR ONCE ON CL, HAVE A LITTLE DENCENCY AND RESPECT.

  29. sumthinnice2say

My goodness, a great legend has passed and all you all can comment on is how bad he looks???? Sad!!!

  30. MEESHI

I DIDN’T KNOT THAT INTERNET CAN JUST SHWO SOMEONE’S DEAD BODY LIKE THAT!!! THATS WRONG… VERY WRONG YALL GOING TO HELL .. R.I.P. JAMES B

  31. RICO_SUAVE

    RIP J.Brown..

He opened the door for alot of artist/performers today. And and will always be remembered for his music, dance moves, and crazy style. I think they did a good job making him up…he looks like himself. “SAY IT LOUD, IM BLACK N IM PROUD!!” LOL…

  32. Contrary to what we may say, He looks very peaceful. Unlike a person that dies of trauma. I’ve been to funerals of people who die traumatic(gunshots, stabbings, etc.) and they don’t look nearly as good as he does. I’m quite sure if he was looking out of the norm of himself, his family would have had a closed casket funeral. We have to remember, he has aged, and he hasn’t been in the spotlight for many years, so he’s not going to look like the James we’ve seen on TV or on stage.

  33. keisheloca

I think im getting old because this young horny kids/teenager be Pissing me off. so disrespectful and ignorant. anyways………. RIP James Brown, you will be missed.

  34. Tonya

    LMAO @ AKAI

What a small world, my sister said he looked like a california raisin too.

I don’t think he looks any different than he did before. I mean the man is DEAD. What do ya’ll expect him to look like? His hair looks the same, like he has a roller wrap and the outfit looks like something he would wear. Soooo what’s the problem?

Anyway I still can’t believe he’s gone but I know James was smiling down at all his fans who came to give their final farewell.

    R.I.P

  35. Mocha

Lord Have Mercy! Very sad! I can’t believe you guys are picking apart his clothing, hair, etc. I remember seeing him on that very stage when I was a kid! He was the ultimate entertainer! RIP James Brown!

  36. Holly

@#18- Though the coffin was of course not made of gold, it was quite heavy. People did offer private planes but the heaviness of the coffin precluded planes from being used. We didn’t need another Aliyah situation.

  37. Holly

@#31- What fucking planet are you from? What’s disrepectful? Death is a part of life. Do you own a TV? Video of this has been all over the tube. Your first New Year’s resolution should be not to be an idiot in ’07

  38. nell

hot diggy damn…the look dont matter, its his impact he made on music…rip

  39. Rest in Peace James Brown. You still got soul.

  40. destiny6158

    R.I.P. James Brown.

I have only one comment for the ignorant posts I’ve seen so far.

You can joke all you want–that’s fine.

But every time you pick up an Usher, Ginuwine, Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, etc—any of these other so-called artists–just remember they’ve all borrowed a little sumthin from the same man you are now making jokes about and disrespecting–WHILE he lays in his coffin.

My prayers fo out to James Brown’s family…

  41. First and foremost R.I.P. James Brown I cried today when I saw you in that casket because it really sunk in that you are gone. You will be gone but not forgotten you were an inspiration to many. I loved his spirit his spunk and most of all his music. I am sorry to say but alot of you on here are so disrespectful I mean my god he is dead have some kind of heart and show him some respect!

  42. A_MILLUN

  43. lois

he looks great may he rest in peace

  44. Deborah from DC

    See,
I feel as though James at 73 looks just as he probably should have given his age and the fact that the body has been preserved as best it could have been, I remember the club being packed up here when he came to perform with Chuck Brown. I must say they are honoring him in away that they should have. Now, I am thankful for his blessing that touched and inspired sooo many lives. I am thankful he impacted my life by inspiring my father (shoe make ol’ school like my dad r.i.p.) to take care of home and always put family first and never ever cease to work as hard as he could to give us (family) the best! Look, what our great culture has produced, Blessings to us all no take this to your home and let his life be a positive inspiration in your home!

  45. Jeanette

  46. Veneitata

People, People! Remember we all must go someday. Today isn’t promised to no one. Would any of the people making those ignorant comments about the decease, would like it, if it were any of your family members being disrespected in this manner? This very sad and hurtful that people can be this s—–!
There is absolutely no reason to disrespect this man. James Brown brought a lot of Soul and Funk to our music. He earned his title as being the “Godfather of Soul” gracefully, proudly, respectively and worked damn hard for many years keeping our music alive to the entire world. Stop and think, where would R & B be without him. I grew up listening to this wonderful entertainer.
James had his up’s and down’s just like all people. He gave the world apart of him through his music. Earned the title respectively as being the “The Hardest Working Man”, in show business.
James made black people stand up and be proud of who they are. Yes, I’ll say that I am “Black and damn Proud”. Thank You Mr. James Brown for your music and dedication to your people. R.I.P Job well done. I thank “God” for the talent of such an inspirational entertainer. He is truly an Icon.

  47. SEXY

Wow…I feel like I just walked up to the casket and viewed his body. I heard you shouldn’t take pics of someone deceased.

On a lighter note, I can hear JB saying, “Don’t have me at my funeral looking bad. Make sure my head is greased, pressed and curled”. Laughter helps to ease pain in difficult times.

He looks nice in his sparkling suit. RIP. You will be missed by many.

  48. big will

For all the people who are upset at the way James Brown looks in his casket, remember the Morticians have to prepare his body as best they can for this service as well as transporting him to N.Y., and back to GA. If his look in that casket makes you look upset, just realize that the family has final apporval and they picked out his outfit. I’m pretty sure he told someone what he wanted to wear into eternety. Just remember him on stage. Dancing, singing, breakin out in a “Cold Sweat”, gettin up up and doing his thang, you know movin, groovin, gettin down, gettin up on the good foot. That’s the James Brown I’ll be keeping in my memory.

    R.i.P JAMES BROWN

  51. #20……that’s a sad statement but so true…. the talent level drops off significantly doesn’t it…?

  52. #31 relax….it was a public viewing… Mr. Brown’s picture in the casket has been all over tv and newspapers…. There’s nothing devious about it appearing here on the internet.

  53. Dang, it just hit me…. Out of the 100+ CDs I own, Mr. Brown is now the only non-living artist in my collection :(

    R.I.P. , JB….

  54. Man o man, Mr. Brown will surely be missed by me. I have so many memories of him, but his music will definitely live on in my house. Again, God bless him and his family. R.I.P.
