JAMES BROWN VIEWING AT THE APOLLO THEATER
Friday, December 29, 2006

Family members stand by James Brown’s casket for his viewing that was held yesterday, at the Apollo Theater. Brown, who shaped American rhythm-and-blues, funk and disco genres for a half-century and was a charter inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, died of complications from pneumonia in the state capital Atlanta, Georgia, on Christmas. He was 73.
Just a heads up, one more picture of him in the casket is after the jump.

Wow! James Brown is an ORIGINAL show stopper! Come on, yall know he would have worn that same suit, silver shoes and white gloves to the show he was to perform on New Year’s Eve. That was just him. I myself wondered who in the world was going to do his hair. I think he looks like himself her in the photos. They have put him a way very well. I do think he will be proud. Who else in this world will be able to have a 24 karat gold casket.. Really?? Without the likes of James Brown there would not have been a Prince, Michael Jackson, Usher, and whoever else that follows behind him.

RIP - Like sharpton said, I didn’t expect him to die. He definetly had enough life n spirit to share with all of us…..and he did with his music and dancing.
He looks like himself, ready to perform again execpt only he’s sleeping. But, they could have at least laid his signature hair!
The casket? Gold?…they better bury him above ground, graverobbers still exist.

I agree about the purple suit. The man went out the same way he came in. A “Show Stopper”…..Nothing quiet about JB.
If the put him in a conservative black suit, it would have been fake.

I am happy to see that masses of people came out to bid the “God Father” farewell. He was not only a musical genius he has bestowed to the world music and served as an inspiration for Black America. He will be soarly missed. as a childI would often see James Brown when visiting my family in Agusta Gorgia! I shed a tear for the Godfather and pray for his spirit in hopes that he raches the pearly gates and is welcomed by his Lord and Savior.

I was saying the same thing about how he doesnt like like himself. but then i realized something he doesnt look like how we are use to seeing him in the spotlight he might have looked like this at home. you know he wore alot of makeup and stuff when he was out in public and performing but underneath all that he could have very well looked liked that. I think he looks more his age and natural in the casket then he did in life. he might have looked like that early in the morning.

Contrary to what we may say, He looks very peaceful. Unlike a person that dies of trauma. I’ve been to funerals of people who die traumatic(gunshots, stabbings, etc.) and they don’t look nearly as good as he does. I’m quite sure if he was looking out of the norm of himself, his family would have had a closed casket funeral. We have to remember, he has aged, and he hasn’t been in the spotlight for many years, so he’s not going to look like the James we’ve seen on TV or on stage.

I have only one comment for the ignorant posts I’ve seen so far.
You can joke all you want–that’s fine.
But every time you pick up an Usher, Ginuwine, Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, etc—any of these other so-called artists–just remember they’ve all borrowed a little sumthin from the same man you are now making jokes about and disrespecting–WHILE he lays in his coffin.
My prayers fo out to James Brown’s family…

I feel as though James at 73 looks just as he probably should have given his age and the fact that the body has been preserved as best it could have been, I remember the club being packed up here when he came to perform with Chuck Brown. I must say they are honoring him in away that they should have. Now, I am thankful for his blessing that touched and inspired sooo many lives. I am thankful he impacted my life by inspiring my father (shoe make ol’ school like my dad r.i.p.) to take care of home and always put family first and never ever cease to work as hard as he could to give us (family) the best! Look, what our great culture has produced, Blessings to us all no take this to your home and let his life be a positive inspiration in your home!

People, People! Remember we all must go someday. Today isn’t promised to no one. Would any of the people making those ignorant comments about the decease, would like it, if it were any of your family members being disrespected in this manner? This very sad and hurtful that people can be this s—–!
There is absolutely no reason to disrespect this man. James Brown brought a lot of Soul and Funk to our music. He earned his title as being the “Godfather of Soul” gracefully, proudly, respectively and worked damn hard for many years keeping our music alive to the entire world. Stop and think, where would R & B be without him. I grew up listening to this wonderful entertainer.
James had his up’s and down’s just like all people. He gave the world apart of him through his music. Earned the title respectively as being the “The Hardest Working Man”, in show business.
James made black people stand up and be proud of who they are. Yes, I’ll say that I am “Black and damn Proud”. Thank You Mr. James Brown for your music and dedication to your people. R.I.P Job well done. I thank “God” for the talent of such an inspirational entertainer. He is truly an Icon.

For all the people who are upset at the way James Brown looks in his casket, remember the Morticians have to prepare his body as best they can for this service as well as transporting him to N.Y., and back to GA. If his look in that casket makes you look upset, just realize that the family has final apporval and they picked out his outfit. I’m pretty sure he told someone what he wanted to wear into eternety. Just remember him on stage. Dancing, singing, breakin out in a “Cold Sweat”, gettin up up and doing his thang, you know movin, groovin, gettin down, gettin up on the good foot. That’s the James Brown I’ll be keeping in my memory.

James Brown’s music was before my time but his music was a HUGE influence on Hip Hop and I became familiar with alot of his music because so many Hip Hop producers sampled his music. I went to the Apollo and meeting ppl who were inspired and influenced directly by his music especially Say It Loud I’m Black and I’m Proud made me realize on how many different levels James Brown was a living legend. Thank God for blessing us with the Godfather of Soul and may he rest in peace and NEVER be forgotten.

RIP JB. I live in North Jersey, and today on one of the radio stations, the DJ did a mix of ALL the early-late hiphop songs that used James Brown. I mean - I knew that he was sampled- but DAMN I could not beleive HOW much. That DJ took me back to grade school/high school. He played something RUN DMC used that had a crazy sound effect, that I assumed was added with technology - but JB used that same sound effect the first go round. Somone needs to do a mix tape of all his work blended with all of the sampled work - it was amazing.

I’m not so sure about the outfit cause he actually might like it, he wore eccentric colors and beaded get ups, so, can’t really say. But regarding hair and makeup, I would have been so upset if i were related cause i’m already upset, and i’m just a fan.
It’s a damn shame once you die you have no control over how they make you look in the casket. I don’t think James would approve of this, but…

#75…I agree, the young artists we have today don’t come close to the Legends. Whenever I see artists perform I see Michael Jackson and we all know MJ was influenced by James B.
#84 Thanks for that link. Some ppl on here are being disrespectful but it seems apparent to me that JB’s family wants ppl to comment on his attire b/c that was apart of who he was, a flashy dresser. What other reason would they do the change in clothes? I noticed in the link #84 gave us, JB has a red shirt and black bow tie and on this site he is in a bluish suit.
I feel like his family is sending a message that he was stylish when he was alive and he is still stylish at his passing.

If they’d buried Mr. Brown in anything other than what you see pictured above, he would have been the first since Lazarus to raise up and put a hurting on somebody.
That’s how Papa got down and they did him right!!
He will truly be missed. I had to sit through 3 consecutive viewings of Rocky IV, as my husband found that a proper remembrance for him.(we also tried to figure out the ad-libs to Living In America)
My favorite memory of him was an Arsenio Hall episode where he kept calling Arsenio ” Arsinya” I fell out three times watching that.
he was one of the best and will NEVER be duplicated…
RIP James Brown….

This is the outfit he has at the Apollo viewing - he has another outfit for the funeral and viewing in Augusta today.
#18 - As for the comment about that they had to use a van to drive his body to the NY from GA - they did that because his family decided to bury him in a 24 karat gold coffin, and as you imagine it’s very heavy, and the small private planes could not accomodate the weight -and a commercial flight was not available until later. Since they had already planned the Apollo viewing, the only way they could make it in time was to drive all night from GA to NY.
So the funeral director and the Rev. Al Sharpton drove all night to get James at his “show” on time. They knew he would not have wanted it any other way.
He was known for his work ethic and being prompt and professional and they weren’t going to let his last show in the Apollo be any different.

So what was the purpose of Al Sharpton travelling with the funeral director? What was he going to do if someone tried to stop them? Just the thought of it makes me laugh. He would probably tell Jesus…’I need to set my ‘Rev.’ title to the side and I’m not going to worry about my hair. I’ll re-curl it when we get to NY’.

^^ - The purpose was probably so that the funeral director wouldn’t have to drive all night alone. It may have simply been for company for the man —
or just maybe, he decided that he wanted to accompany the body of the man he loved, respected, and consider like a father to him.

I think everyone should be created anyway. There is no reason(but money) to put all that money into burying a “shell” that is no longer of any use to you.

Very disappointed more stars didn’t show up at the GA service-especially the ones who made money off of him, P-diddy,Rakim/Eric B, Kool Moe Dee etc. & where was George Clinton & so many others who were influenced by him-thank goodness for Bootsy & MJ & Hammer because if it weren’t for them (as far as talent goes) that service would have been a parade of nobodys & the Godfather deserves sooo much more. I agree with 102. I thought maybe I had missed something, but reading and seeing the photos, I too wonder where were the artist and celebrities. It truly is a shame that someone as influential as James Brown to have 3 services that no one in the industry he helped create could not find time to attend his funeral. At least Michaeal Jackson with all of his troubles made the sacrifice to pay tribute to one of the greatest entertainers of all time. I am confused and dissappointed that I did not see a larger turnout of his peers who benefited from his musical gift.

Not every celebrity has to come to attendance, some people don’t like funerals and stuff like that.Celebrities they families too and I’m pretty sure they sadden about this. Why do celebrities have to come? For a fashion show so we can decided what they wearing was trashy? He is dead Bless his soul. But I kind of agree with Itty Bitty too.It always been like that. But everybody goes through somethings in their life that they try to control,we can’t judge him.I’m pretty sure everybody had their share of doing bad things.RIP to Mr. Brown.

Lawd, how good do you all expect a dead person to look?!? The man is DEAD, not just leaving a Tyra Banks Makeover show! Come on, people!! You all are focusing on the wrong thing. I’d like to see ONE person that looks EXACTLY the same way in death that they did in life. Things happen when a person dies: embalming, facial stuffing, transport to and from the funeral home….and you can’t forget that the person’s soul is GONE. That’s just a shell there now. The actual person is no longer there. Things are going to look different. Stay positive, folks.

My only complaint over Mr. Brown’s public viewing is that it looked like the Reverends Jesse and Al show with James in the backup position.
Hey, maybe the Brown family wanted it this way but I think the two Revs should have played their roles more on the down low side instead of the high profile side. They looked more like the gate-keepers who made it known that they were in charge of the whole shebang.
Did these two make Mr. Brown’s fans kiss their rings before approaching his casket?

littlemamajtb, I think you are showing disrespect towards James Brown by comparing him to some clowinsh comic book character. The man was an icon in the world of show biz. Entertainers are like Mr. Brown were all about the glitter and flamboyance on stage and in the public’s eye. There is absolutely nothing wrong in bringing that image to the grave with them.
Besides, who else could pull off being waked at the Apollo in such style?
My only fear is that this event may give Flava Flav some ideas. Oh mannnnnn…!

oh yeah, I have something to say about James Brown’s funeral…
As much as I respect James Brown, and love his music, it pained me to see him in that casket.
Whoever the Mortician/Funeral Director was should be shot…
That has to be the worst job of preparing a body I’ve ever seen…
James’s hair wasn’t done, and they should have applied MORE makeup to make him look more lifelike…
When I was in college I used to work in a funeral home, so I know what could have been done…
That’s mortician’s work was HORRIBLE.

R.I.P. Mr James Brown…!! Definitely ONE IN A MILLION!! 73 isnt old at all; and to be honest in the world of entertainment, many artist/celebrities tend to look old beyond their yrs at times from all of the traveling, entertaining, ups & downs, stress, etc. I think James Brown looked good for his age and he had also been pretty sickly. He was def a LIVE one! But I think by right, it was good to see him laid to rest in a more humble fashion….somewhat anyways.
Peace!~
