JENNIFER HUDSON COVERS THE ADVOCATE

Jennifer Hudson is definitely riding this new shooting star to fame. Word is she recieved a standing ovation right in the middle of the premiere screening of Dreamgirls. Eurweb reports that the whole crowd was teary-eyed after she performed the insanely popular “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.” Word is Beyonce had already left the theater and hopped on a private jet to be with her boo.

Our girl is now gracing the cover of the popular LGBT magazine, The Advocate. In this issue she talks about meeting Whitney Houston for the first time, the Academy Awards and more… You know we have a snippet for you after the jump..

“I met Whitney last night,” Jennifer Hudson tells me, wide-eyed. “I was just sitting there and she came up and she waved at me and said, ‘You’re the one! You! Are! The One!’ And I was just stunned. I even forgot to get up.”

What Hudson is leaving out of this story, one she’s telling me over breakfast at the Beverly Hilton hotel, is why Whitney Houston approached the 25-year-old star of the upcoming film Dreamgirls. The night before, Hudson had appeared at the Carousel of Hope, an annual Beverly Hills benefit for children with diabetes, spearheaded by socialite Barbara Davis. Hudson performed the song “I Am Changing” from the movie and by all accounts blew the roof off the place, causing the assembled famous—Warren Beatty and Annette Bening, Teri Hatcher, Sharon Stone, Jay Leno, Halle Berry—to go a little nuts. Houston reportedly leaped from her seat, screaming Hudson’s praises. This is the kind of thing you expect to hear about a singer who’s just won American Idol and is still in the first blush of that show’s mania, not about a former Idol contestant who came in seventh three seasons back.

  2. Im First maybe Not!

    She’s a Killa man!
    Beyonce has never taken a back seat but this film as fucked her up being int he shadow like that is gonna kill a woman who’s always been the lead and lime light.

    She seemed like an extra in this film

  3. Tracey

    LOVE HER!! Gorgeous!

  4. DD

    She looks really nice in the 2nd pic.

  5. Reggie's Girl

    I’m LOVIN that red dress! JHud doin big things!

  6. Caliana

    I have mixed feelings on this.I think the media is purposely trying to stick it to Beyonce.Bee is getting really big and many just don’t want to see her rise to the top in the world of acting as she has in music.By continuously down playing Bee for Jennifer is really a way to hold Bee back.The media knows upping Jennifer is a waste and won’t go anywhere because Jennifer is too fat to ever get any real attention in movies or music.It may seem like they feeling her but they not, they just using her to snub Bee.And before anyone says it, I am not a Bee fan.I just recognize the game the white media is playing.

  7. WinLamb5

    This has NOTHING to do with anyone else. She is adorable and REAL.

    Let JHud’s star SHINE people!
    She has the talent, the drive, the down home personality.
    I’m behind her ALL THE WAY!

    She looks great in those pics!
    Photoshop overboard or not. ;D

  10. Jasmine

    I don’t agree wit No.6

    The white media loves Beyonce ….

    I hope JHudson gets her shine

  11. i don’t agree with #6 neither. I am pretty sure after Dreamsgirls she can afford a personal trainer and get that baby fat off. Plus there are plenty of non-skinny actresses that are doing well. Most of them are on those medical dramas, but they work hard for it.

  12. la française

    Caliana so JHud is too fat to be a singer or an actress??? Sorry but u sound so stupid!! Wtf does it mean??? It makes no sense!!
    Anywayz, u guyz need to stop thinkin that Bee’s the most beautiful girl in the world!! DAMN!!!!

  13. Oracle

    I can’t believe people actually believe the media and great entertainers are trying to pull B. down just because their praising another costar singing and acting abilities. People are excited to see someone come along with actual talent that dont have to show 90% of their body half of the damn time. Some people on this board need to go to sleep with their idiotic conspiracy theories. (Did you even see the movie?)

  14. la française

    One more thing,
    i wish her the best!!
    She’s a true artist*roll my eyes at No.6 and Bee*

  15. SA CHICK

    JHud is amazing!!! I’ll be a stan and support her through all the BS!! So girl do your thang and stay blessed.

  16. sweet

    why is she bashing gay people in the article?

  17. Mama

    Why can’t her and Beyonce succeed? Why does it have to be one or the other?

  18. Lamumba

    if she bash gays, they will shut her little fat black butt down so fast! She’ll think slavery came back in style!

  19. Oracle

    I didn’t see where she bashed gays. What comment did she make?

  20. This is great…with her attitude she’ll go far and be around for a long time. #6 having a dumb moment.
    Don’t know about the gay bashing thing… ‘Jennifer Hudson, star of the upcoming film version of the musical Dreamgirls, will perform at this year’s unofficial Gay Days at Disneyland on October 7, organizers announced Friday. The three-day event in Anaheim, Calif., runs October 68; Hudson will appear at the Kingdom Dance Party at the House of Blues in the theme park’s Downtown Disney area. ‘

    #6 Caliana and #11 – I think they kinda touched on something I was thinking and Caliana said it well. Everyone latched on to the one word that she said in the post — “fat”. But you may have misunderstood her real sentiment. I’d rather not say “all white media”, but it has definitely been the case that many media outlets will take a situation like this and try to create a story like, “Who’s the REAL star???”. If some folks are old enough to remember the Michael Jackson/Prince split cover ads: “Who’s really on the top of the music world” or some crap like that.

    The ironic thing is that Beyonce is PERFECT for the Diana Ross/going solo/leaving-the-group-cause-I-wanna -be-a-BIG-star (and plus I got way more talent) role! She is the modern day Diana — of course not in creating real and lasting music or making hits (let’s be real) but Destiny’s is kinda like what happened to the Supremes.

    What I’m trying to understand about the article and I made my way over to “The Advocate” — (which I still don’t understand — an advocate of what? An “alternative lifestyle” I guess…anyway) reading the article I don’t see where her article coincides with a gay magazine. I don’t have a problem with it, but it just seems odd. I read the whole article and there is no mention of her being gay or talking about “gay issues”. Perhaps the Advocate just runs stories like People Magazine regardless of the person’s sexual orientation? It just seems odd.

    Uh, #17 Sweet… did you actually take the time to READ the article? Where is the mention of her bashing gays? And I love how other folks comment on what you said — this is how rumors get started.

  22. Nikki

    Oh, Oh! Jennifer Hudson on the come up. I love her lips, damn!

  23. keisheloca

    Team jennifer! and why cant people accept that this girl has talent. its not all about looks wit everybody

  24. J-Hud i am impressed, hope you keep yourself respected and admire and dont ruin it like whitney though.

    good luck in success.
    i dont like the first picture but the 2nd one is killer.

  25. The woman looks GORGEOUS..that chocolate brown is killing them! Now I agree with what someone said about how the media is pitting one black woman against another…and we are just feeding into it. Why isn’t there room for both women to shine?? Jennifer probably did do the dam thing in this movie, but why does that have to lessen Beyonce’s contributions? Its all love.

  26. kesha

    when you are good you are good! it is her time to shine! it is called favor. there is a saying, what God has for me is for me. this is her season so i think there is no reason for Bee to be mad at her. favor is never fair!

  27. creole

    I’m so sick of these articles which state there’s tension between Jhud and Beyonce…can’t they just compliment Jhud and move on…can’t they praise the fact that she’s gotten a second chance…we need more artists who can sing and reach the greater public so I’d rather support Jhud for her talent and humbleness than the non-singing pretty girls who get by through sex appeal.

  28. NEWORLEANS_FINEST_CANDI

    WHO REALLY CARES IS BEE DONT HAVE DA LEAD ROLE. U PPL KILL ME, SHYT SHE PLAYED THE ROLE SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN AND THAT IS DEENA, THE SKINNIER, PRETTIER SINGER. BEE IS ON HER GRIND AND MAKIN DAT $, AND SHE GOT A FLY AZZ MAN, THE GIRL IS HAPPY, SHE AINT WORRIED ABOUT U MESSY PPL!

  29. Wow…It seems like Whitney Houston has given Jennifer Hudson her “Seal of Approval”

    Very nice !!!

  30. Southern Belle

    I love that second photo. Do it, Jennifer!

  31. QUICHE-A

    Again people….let’s not play into what the media is trying to do. We are smarter than that. Let’s show ALL the black people in this film some love and be proud of it because it’s OUR thing, not theirs! Don’t bash Beyonce, don’t bash Jennifer…let’s just show the whole thing mad love!

    Stop all this foolishness, we are only hurting ourselves!

    Go Dreamgirls!!!!!!!

  32. NEWORLEANS_FINEST_CANDI

    THE LORD HAS DEFINATELY BLESSED MS HUDSON, SHE MAY NOT HAVE WON AMERICAN IDOL, BUT SOME THANGS JUST ARENT MEANT 2 BE EVEN IF U DO WANT THEM. GOD HAD A BIGGER PLAN FOR HER WITH THIS ROLE, AND SHE GOT A RECORD DEAL ANYWAY, SO SCREW AMERICAN IDOL FOR NOT RECOGNIZING HER TALENT.

  33. dark&irresistible

    there is enough space in hollywood for evry1 to shine, i must admit beyonce mite be a bit jealous cos she is used to gettin all the attention. wld definitly c the movie wen it comes out in the uk.

  34. ThinkAboutIt

    #32 – ABSOLUTELY !
    They are all talented, this is an ensemble cast. Let them all get their shine on… including Anika Noni Rose.

  35. I don’t think the media is trying to stick it to Beyonce by uplifting J-Hud. (Maybe some of your average Joe’s) But, I think the media are giving J-Hud praises because she deserves them. Get real, movie critics can be pretty harsh.

    This should’nt be about competition but about talent. They are both talented but, Bee is already an established artist in the music industry and trying to do the same with acting. J-Hud is just now really getting a chance to prove that she was more than an American Idol contestent. Her spirit is beautiful and outside beauty looks horrible if you are ugly and self-centered on the inside. I think she’s pretty and anybody can lose weight; everyone does not have the talent to act. I’m glad they both are doing big things.

  36. seabreeze

    SWSNBN has a serious STAN in here. Damn! Anyhoo, can’t wait 2 c the movie!

  37. wifey

    J-Hud is the real deal. I know it sounds wack as hell, but I seriously knew this girl could be one of the BEST vocalists of our time when I watched her Idol audition. I remember getting chills, and being a little awestruck at her voice.

    Here it is on Youtube, singing Aretha Franklin’s, “Share Your Love With Me,” acapella.

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=NQdO6YAefGA

    At one point in the audition, Simon looks over at Randy like, “HOT DAMN! We ’bout to get paid!” LOL

  38. Atl_1987

    Forgive me if i start any trouble, i’m just wondering if anyone else has seen this. http://popsugar.com/78123

    it seems (like many commenters on the article said) that those were some obvious, yet “subliminal” shots at Jennifer Hudson. I know that i’ve done the same (in reference to something OTHER than my major film role of course, lol) before where i’ve been mean by appearing nice.

    Again, apologies in advance if this brings out the STAN in anyone

  39. AngelEyes

    While I am not totally in agreement with #6, the media does play some dirty tricks so don’t be surprised if this so called rival was made up around the meeting table over donuts and coffee.

    Beyonce has proven herself to be commercially viable.

    The media outlets uses her just like any other famous person and that is to make money. The media could care less about Bey. It is about business.

    The question is weather Jennifer has what it takes to work hard and stand the test that she will be put under.

    While the media does try to orchestrate battles between entertainers, it is entirely possible that they are just picking up on what they are hearing from the public.

    Lets not forget that there are a lot of people on these movie sets and they are sometimes the ones who start rumors. They even leek stuff to the press for money.

    Do you think they personally care about the stars of the movie. They are just as slick as the media is.

    You also never know if the producers and directors themselves have sang Jennifers praises right in front of Bey.

    When you are in the spotlight, all eyes are watching your every move so don’t be surprised if things that people have said in confidence have just spread like a disease.

    Jennifer Hudson is just talented. It does not matter who she is working with. She was destined to be noticed. The focus should absolutely not be about weight. There have been many black stars before JHud that were not slim. With that said, money can do a lot for a girl.

    Soon you will see her get into shape because of the pressure to look good but her talent alone will take her very far.

    Beyonce has been trying to get recognition for her acting ability and it just so happens that JHud’s first film has put her on the map.

    Not to knock Bey but some people just have it that way.

  40. Cher

    Leave Bee alone! IF I HAD TO CHOSE TO WATCH A MOVIE OR GO WITH MY MAN…. BEST BELIEVE I’M GOING WITH MY MAN! IT’S FUNNY HOW EASY IT IS TO PUT 2 WOMEN AGAINST EACH OTHER. ESPECIALLY BALCK WOMEN. AND OUR CULTURE ENCOURAGES IT!

  41. I think she would do well and I glad she doing something for herself, she was a contestant on american idol to landing a part on dreamgirls. to me she came a long way. Most of the idol you hear about doing plays and trying to get there music out, and unless you were one of the winners we really don’t hear much about them, and for her to be one of those idol who didn’t win but still doing it big I give her praise. The simple fact that she big actually that make me more happy for her because that let you know that half of the music industry doesn’t exaclty half to be skinny, strong,light skin, long hair, etc just to be known. She very pretty in these pictures.

  42. chocolate_fiyah

    Go Jen! It’s ya burfday!

  43. dolemitejones

    Damn that is one fine sista,cool personality,banging baody. Wifey material

  44. DINAJONES

    BEYONCE IS NOT AN ACTRESS AT ALL…I FEEL SHE DESERVED THE ROLE THAT SHE WAS GIVEN….I DONT EVEN KNO HOW SHE WAS EVEN CHOOSED TO STAR IN THIS MOVIE…IM NOT HATING ON BEYONCE BUT SHE REALLY JUST NEEDS TO TAKE A BREAK…SHES ON EVER COVER SHE IS GOING TO SOON B TOO OVER EXPOSED…TRUST…

    BEYONCE WILL BECOME OVER EXPOSED…SHE NEEDS TO REALLY TAKE A BREAK AND LET PEOPLE JUST TAKE HER IN LITTLE BY LITTLE…BECAUSE BEYONCE IS IS HUGE

    DINA JONES

  45. DIVINE 1

    YOU GO GIRL!!!! Stay humble and GOD will take you ALL thre way!!!
    There is nothing that makes me happier than GOOD,TRUE, TALENT…Nothing FAKE about J.HUDSON.
    SHE IS DOING HER THANG!!!!

  46. Slovely

    Good for her! Can’t wait for her album ;-)

  47. Kita bka

    (1) There will never be enough space for two blk women to succeed and be “on top” at the same time, UNLESS it is the music industry….not in modeling, not in acting, and not in most other “ordinary” places and professions….that’s just the way the cookie crumbles.

    (2) Beyonce also did an article for the advocate…I saw it over at C + D. In the article, she sounded so stereotypical of gays….

    ~ Her uncle was gay
    ~He died of AIDS
    ~She doesn’t feel animosity towards gays b/c
    -he took her to school everyday (Thought she was home-schooled since the age of 9)
    -he helped her pick out her prom dress (Thought SHE DIDNT ATTEND Highschool)
    -He helped her mom fix her clothes for her (that one is believeable)

    I hope she fires her image consultant/ media coach b/c that story was WACK and with little research, you can find holes in it….sad!

    ~~~EITHER Beyonce OR Jennifer will come out on top after this movie in the acting realm…NOT BOTH~~~
    if it is Jennifer…she will have a world of weight on her shoulders b/c she will be EXPECTED to top her “Effie” performance.
    if it is Beyonce, it wont matter b/c ppl genuinely cant stand her.
  48. Kita bka
    Also, Tuesday Night, I saw a trailer for “Rocky Balboa” and it said “In theatres CHRISTMAS DAY”….I knew “Dream Girls” would sufferin sales…not drastically, but that it might not make the #1 spot….and I asked my mom, How do you think they’ll deal with this???
    Well, Ill be damned if last night, I saw the same trailer and the release date was scheduled for 12/20/06….LMAO….those directors and producers for DreamGirls aren’t playing either…LOL…I’ll go see both, though.
  49. b all the way
    why do some of you feel the need to bring down bee in order to up jenn? it’s quiet stupid actually and you are letting your true colors show. sure you guys love jenn now but i hope you are there when her cd comes and the hype about dreamgirls wears off. you same people are the ones who are going to start complaining about how she’s overexposed and overrated and shit. right now, you acting like her you love her but as she gets bigger, you will start to get jealous and eventually start hating on her like you hate on bee.
    for those of you who haven’t seen the broadway play, bee is supposed to get outshined by jenn. it’s was the same way with sheryl and jennifer holliday. i don’t know why some of you thought it was going to be any different this time around. bee knew that cause she knew about the play. speaking of jenn holiday, that woman does not like jenn hudson very much. i heard her on the wendy williams show and she sounded quiet bitter towards jhud. i think she’s jealous but oh well
    from what i understand, bee wanted the deena jones role and that is why she auditioned for that part and watched tapes of diana. bee is getting recognition for her acting by actual critics who’ve seen the movie but you guys don’t want to focus on that because you’ll rather see somebody else other than her succeed. bee should be an inspiration to all of us because look at what this girl has achieved at 25 and still aims to go higher. she’s not just trying to do greatness it one area but everything she does.
    just stop comparing and hyping up the competion these two black women and just both of them in the movie. who cares about who outshines who? we finally have something positive for black people and black people are going to turn it around and turn it into a competition.
  50. Meatloaf
    I wish my Boo would leave the Loopstan and hop on a private jet to come see about me! lol
  51. fashiongurl
    #6 you must be out of your mind
    I have to say that there have been superstars that came before Beyonce and there will be superstars that come after her. I mean I love Beyonce but if there is no one on this planet that will ever surpass her success we are all doomed!
    Jennifer Hudson is talented and despite her weight she is Beautiful. Get used to it!
  52. btlb
    i like that red dress, she looks good. deena was the right role for b b/c we all know that is how she is in real life. always got to be in the middle and the center of attention.
    CO-SIGN 100%….its always when stars start to “smell themselves” that they fall in the eye of the “ppl”…I call it the Julius Caesar complex…
    And then, the stars (Ceasar), are left asking us :
    Et tu, Brute (The same fans that helped then get to where they are will bring them down to nothing when we feel that they are feeling themselves and get conceited)
    To be honest, I can see J-Hud getting cocky, just like Ashanti did after she “made it”….I just hope that she’ll pray to the Lord to humble her and let her know that although she is a starruh…she is a mere mortal, like us all.
    THAT…will take her to unimaginable height.
    I think the day and age where ppl like their stars “cocky” have been replaced….no one cares to see a DIVA anymore.
    Now, ppl prefer “swagger”…confidence, while still acknowledging humbleness.
  54. R&B Fan 4 Life
    She looks and sounds amazing. Guess we’re back to comparisons?
  55. Sizzle
    Go head Jennifer. She’s looking fierce and making her money.
  56. THE SECOND PIC SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE COVER. SHE LOOKS GREAT THERE. JENNIFER IS A STAR!!
  57. Jaye
    I’m looking forward to the movie and I hope JHud and Beyonce do very well. I don’t why we can support our black women, instead yall try to put them up against each other. And FYI Beyonce knew when she took the the role that it was a smaller part than JHud. Stop the hatin’ please!!!
  58. wifey
    #50…while I agree that people don’t need to diss Bey to give J-Hud her props, you are WRONG when you said, “from what i understand, bee wanted the deena jones role.” BEFORE they started screening the movie, I kept reading quotes from Beyonce saying things like she was meant to play Deena, and that she had been preparing for that role all her life.
    But NOW…in the last couple of days, Beyonce has been WIDELY quoted saying, “I wish I could have gained 20 pounds and played Effie. I absolutely would have.” She thinks J-Hud is getting attention because she played a better role. J-Hud is getting attention because she is GOOD.
    I don’t necessarily believe there is a rivalry, but like I said in an earlier post, Bey is used to being the HBIC…I have no doubt that she is uncomfortable not being the center of attention. When was the last time any other actor ran around saying, “I’m already a star. I’ve won a gazillion awards. I’ve won this and that” because one of their co-stars was getting more attention? The girl is human, and I don’t think she’s used to this.
