Gloden Globe nominee Jennifer Hudson performed on the Today Show yesterday, right after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the Nominations. She performed “One Night Only” and “I Am Changing” from the Dreamgirls movie. Youtube links are provided..
Lee Baily of eurweb.com, had a chance to speak with her after she left the NBC studios:
All they said was ‘Jen’ and we were screaming and crying and just jumping around excited,” Hudson said. “Then I had to run out there on stage and do my interview and hop on stage and sing, and I didn’t even know what I was doing or what was happening because it was so overwhelming. I’ve never experienced that many emotions in one minute…a second…a moment.
I’m just grateful that I’m here, because out of all the ‘Idols,’ over 70,000 people that auditioned, three, four or five different seasons of ‘American Idol,’ 782 Effies, what were the odds of me being here right now and to receive such an honor as to be a Golden Globe nominee? Even if I don’t get it, just to be able to consider that is enough for me, really.
I talked to my mom, of course she’s the first person I called,” Hudson told EUR. “And she was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m so happy! I’m so excited!’ Then she said, ‘Okay, baby, what exactly is the Golden Globes?’
I love Jhud. She is a beautiful full figured woman, and she seems so real and down to earth.
I know it’s not a competition, but I perfer the underdog in this movie. I am rooting for Jhud or Bey.
Jhud is the shit. Sista can sing her ass off. I can’t wait for her CD to come out next year. Finally a female that can sing for real.
Do ya thing Jen
I love Jhud. She is a beautiful full figured woman, and she seems so real and down to earth.

I guess I’m the only one who is not totally impressed with her voice. She is good but not all that! I grew up with such as as Stephanie Mills, Jennifer HOliday, Vesta, Whitney and Patti.who had all the three P’s..Pitch, Pace, and Power. The new breed lacks some or all of those qualities as well as emotion behind the voice. I’m not comparing Jennifer Hudson the old divas but at least put emotion into the song. It’s the same with Beyonce.
she is good…i hope she wins the golden globe…
Love her!
U CAN SO TELL THAT THIS GIRL IS BEGINNING TO LOOK MORE AND MORE HOLLYWOOD, SHE GETS PRETTIER BY THE SECOND!
I will watch this when I get home.
she is not playing
more on here

I kind of agree with Dee, but with the exception of maybe Whitney and Stephanie…these women were older when they came on the scene. I think some of the more authentic emotion is based on experience. On top of which I think the old school diva’s were hungry, they weren’t automtically given a few million or even several hundred thousand to star in this or be on that. Shirley Murdock sang with passion because she had a natural love for singing, not because there were endorsement deals and movies to do.
Now money is a given. And the craft is compromised. And many people who will post today will not have a clue who some of the other people you talked about–so there’s no frame of reference.
If all I have is a contemporary artist to measure the 3 P’s then yeah Jhud is doing one hell of job.
She Killed it!
Dee and I’m_Not_Her, good points.
I get goosebumps when I hear her singing that song.
whatever….if she can’t sang then i dont know who in the hell can…..J broke it DOWN…..dat girl is the SHIT!!!
Wow #4, I grew up listening to the artists you mentioned (Stephanie Mills was my first concert), but I so disagree about J-Hud. I think she has the *it* that you mention lacking in most of today’s artists. There are very, very few young singers who I think can hold a candle to the legends you mentioned, but I believe J-Hud is one of them. I think she GETS IT. I saw her perform “I Am Changing,” (don’t know if this is the same clip), but I was MOST impressed with her thoughtfulness to the emotion of the song. I thought she did a wonderful job translating the meaning of the song with her voice.
Anywho, I guess everyone will see things differently. I love JHUD, and she is about to blow up, but she needs to tone down that little ‘X-tra’ she gives to the media (asking what are the Golden Globes?). Wait ’til you aren’t in front of the media and ask someone behind the scenes who is in the know. That just sounds ignorant, and no need to offend the people who are trying to honor you.
She sounded really good. I am impressed with an amateur acting and sounding the way she did in Dreamgirls. Her first time out and already nominated for a Golden Globe with Hollywood verterans is very impressive. I think her mother was the one asking what are the Golden Globes, not her. She would be in another worldt not to know what the Golden Globes or Oscars are hearing all year that she should win them both.
that girl can sang!
She sounds really good. wish her much success.
I agree w/Dee. She is just alright to me.
Very talented sister –
Proof that a dream deferred is not a dream denied.
I hope she gets all of the awards and accolades she deserves.
JHUD….is Great….I’m Can’t wait till the movie comes out….She has a wonderful voice…wonderful!
Beautiful voice!
OMG! This woman’s voice is touched by GOD! She is incredible!
I don’t think anybody is doubting that home girl can sing or even SANG. She’s beautiful, her stage presence is awesome.
But parts of her delivery seems acrobatic to me like….hear what I can do….and less organic like…hear how I really feel.
Maybe its unfair to make Stephanie Mills, Vesta, Shirley Murdock, Jennifer Holliday, Ms Patti Patti comparisons…but she’s the first person to ever come close. When Dee mentioned Vesta I thought about “Congratulations” there was nothing technical about it. It was pure and unadulterated emotion.
she can outsing everyone out there except Tasia! (yes tasia hollers sometimes, but her singin voice is magical)
i think JHUD is handlin all the media stuff really well
and the quote about her mom askin what the golden globes were was cute…its so personable and humbling and that’s why America is in love with this girl
THAT’S MORE CHICKEN WINGS IN DA BANK, J-HUD! GET YO CHICKEN WANGS!!!!!!!!
her voice is Beauuuuutifull, and very very powerful.
gotta love a woman can sing so damn well. do ya thang JHud.
#11 that’s very true.
I like her physical gestures as she sings, it shows that she can feel the song, it shows a sense of emotion that is evoked as she sings.
I heart jen. she did so good on both songs.
Her voice is amazing and it will only get better as she sings more and more.
YES GO JEN GO JEN, FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE GETTING THE SPOTLIGHT. Eat your Heart out Skankyonce!! I know she is sittin someplace salty, its really about time that the spotlight be on someone else.
i KNOW kELLY AND mICHELLE ARE HAPPY TOO!!
WIFEY, WE ARE ALWAYS “HERE”! WELL, EXCEPT FOR WHEN YOU WAS TALKIN ABOUT TYRESE…LOL! I AGREE 100%!
THIS IS JENNIFER WITHOUT ANY FORMAL TRAINING. SHE’S STILL A RAW STRAIGHT OUT OF CHURCH SINGER. IMAGINE THE AMOUNT OF RANGE AND CONTROL SHE’LL GET WITH A LITTLE TRAINING. SHE IS GOING TO KNOCK EVERYONE IN THE INDUSTRY ON THEIR ASSES VOCALLY. HELL, SHE’S ALREADY KNOCKING MOST EVERYONE BUT THE VETERANS ON THEIR ASSES! THIS GIRL IS THE REAL VOCAL TALENT THIS MUSIC INDUSTRY IS MISSING. I CANT WAIT FOR HER ALBUM TO COME OUT. J HUD IS A STAR!
AMEN TO THAT!!
HAHAHAHAHAH AMEN!!!
She has a strong voice im happy someone else is in the scene not the same old train and yall know who im talking about….
I think she has the potential, yes she is young. Shirley Murdock and Stephanie Mills are all great, but they were mature women. She is 17, and I don’t know too many 17 year olds (her american idol agae) past or present who had all the p’s pitch, pace, and power.
Alot of these women were singing out of pain and experiences. Give her time and she will get there. She is humble, yet a natural diva. This is her first song. I don’t know if you are true fan of the artist you named, but many of them have albums and songs that were never released for a reason. For a beginner, she is great, and real. Whitney Houston, Mary Wilson, and Oprah have all seen something in her. Hopefully she want let Hollywood execs turn her into a pop star and ruin her potential for greatness, as they have done with many artist.
Soul takes time, you cna’t fake it.
#30 @G’, I agree she will be better in time with training! Jennifer puts everything she has into her singing! Often times, she sounds pushed to the limits!
=====================================================
Bouga, did you see the woman from SA on “Deal or No Deal” Wednesday night?
J Hud a Great Performer
but i dont think she will go far
and i feel she is only good @ singing with power
and i will not buy an album of 13 tracks of hearin the same things over and over again.
in my opinion i dont think he will be able to sustain a future career for long
but i wish her the best of luck
Here comes stardom for Jennifer Hudson…..
Here comes the men trying to get down with her for her celeb status.
Here come the shady managers and friends who want to tell her what to do not to help her career but to get themselves money and position.
Here comes the fans who get attached and then want you to do, sing and look however THEY decide.
Here come the accolades, the awards, and the parties….here comes the gassing up.
Here comes the scripts for every movie coming up that requires a “full-figured” black woman who can sing.
Here comes the money that you don’t know how to manage.
I’m hoping that Jennifer has enough sense to keep family close — and not the jealous ones who’ll come forward to leech off her success – stay humble and keep focused on her craft and not the fame…
This blaze of stardom is nice…but that does not a career make. Stay humble and stay focused, that’s my advice.
Cosign Ne-Ho for Ne-Yo
Cosign Mrs. Johnson
I hope she gets with the right people that can help her live up to her full potential. L love her voice.
JHUD was Magnificant!!!!! I ‘m so happy for her. I hope she wins the Golden Globe.
Jennifer is 25 yrs old Hope she and Fantasia sing
a song together since they both now label mates
Fantasia song a song for Jennifer when she got
voted off Idol and when they last sing together on
Idol they song “Look Like WE May It”.
I LOVE THIS GIRL…I wanted her to win Idol but when she left I voted for Fantasia…a duet with those two….WATCH OUT! That would be some real SANGIN!
First of all GOD mad us all unique so why should we compare her to Patti LaBelle,Vesta, Stephanie Mills or Jennifer Holliday? She is Jennifer Hudson and her talent is pure and natural and whatever accolades she recives based on her debut in “Dreamgirls” she fully deserves. Our expectation is if you’re not “eye candy” you’re not good enough and it is unjust and unfair. I have no doubt that she will surpass many people who are already considered stars in the entertainment industry. She is humble, sincere and focused and has deep spritual convictions that will surely help her on her road to success. That alone will make her soar to the mountain tops, the fact that American Idol did not recognize the level of her talent is unfortunate. But most of these reality tv talent shows fall short on what real talent is ,and several platinum artists got kicked off of these shows and are ultimately successful today. I voted for her every week because she exemplified what real talent was in every essence of the word..
@ Mrs. Johnson Jennifer is 17? I don’t think so because I believe she was 21 when she was on American Idol 2 years ago.
@10 I’M NOT HER said:
“….I think the old school diva’s were hungry, they weren’t automtically given a few million or even several hundred thousand to star in this or be on that. TELL ‘EM AGAIN WHILE I LISTEN! That’s exactly how I feel! AMEN CHURCH!
.
I love your comments about here comes the ….. So true.
Jen Hudson is doing her thing. It’s funny though that the girls name that replaces Jen in Dreamgirls is Michelle, just like in Destinys Child. I’m really starting to think that this is the Beyonce/Diana story!
Jennifer Hudson

She has a beautiful voice and I hope she be sucessful in her career and that my opinion
“….I don’t know if you are true fan of the artist you named, but many of them have albums and songs that were never released for a reason.”
—————–
@35
That would make us as inorganic as the theme of our arguement. And what is the definition of a “true fan”?
Why would one site a person who made huge rumbles in the R&B circuit and have no appreciation for them and not know their body of work.
I’m sorry as much of a talent I think Jhud is, I think more of the love for JHUD is rooted in the absolute disdain of Beyonce and her oversaturtation. Everybody loves the underdog-but what happens when Jhud’s star becomes really bright? What happens when she no longer belongs to you as a the metaphorical little engine that could.
I was raised in a household that played tons and tons of Donny Hathaway, Nina Simone, Nancy Wilson, Patty Labelle and the bluebells, Curtis Mayfield, EWF, etc etc….that kind of appreciation for music logically goes into Stephanie Mills, Vesta, Lalah Hathaway etc. You don’t fake that kind of love. Sorry.
And I think Jhud is beautiful so I don’t buy the–”she doesn’t fit the mold which is why we have beef”.
This just goes to show that “American Idol” doesn’t allows choose the “real” winners. Jennifer Hudson, if she keeps her mind right, is gonna go far…
http://www.blackbeatpress.com
I’m proud of her,I think she has a very beautiful voice. A little time with a vocal coach and it’ll be, “all she wrote”.
@ #36
Meatloaf
What are you talking about broer? I didn’t see that. What is Deal Or No Deal to begin with?
damn that gurl has soul
I like Jennifer Hudson a lot and I am really proud of her success. But, I do have two points, She does not compare to Jennifer Holiday in any shape, form or fashion. Go back and listen to the original dreamgirls soundtrack and you will see my point. Nextly, why is everyone trying to hate on beyonce. she is the bomb extraordinarily talented and she will will an oscar.
I LIKE HER
JHUD. WOW……..! SHE’S INCREDIBLE. THE VOICE AND HER NEW LOOK IS GREAT! I’M SO…….PROUD OF HER. GO JHUD.!.!.!.!.
She sounded great! I am really happy for her. Hopefully by next year she wont be a forgotten person. She has so much talent it would be a shame if she got lost in the background. Oh and to the person who said this was the Beyonce/Diana story, i dont know if u were joking or not, but i dont think this story has anything to do with beyonce, being that it came out the same year she was born.
Jennifer Hudson did the damn thang…
Thank you Angelica. Jennifer Hudson may do a good performance of I Am Telling You but imo that is still Jennifer Holiday’s song. There is no comparing the two. Jennifer Holiday ripped it and Jennifer Hudson can sing it.
