JENNIFER HUDSON PERFORMS ON THE TODAY SHOW
Friday, December 15, 2006
Gloden Globe nominee Jennifer Hudson performed on the Today Show yesterday, right after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the Nominations. She performed “One Night Only” and “I Am Changing” from the Dreamgirls movie. Youtube links are provided..
Lee Baily of eurweb.com, had a chance to speak with her after she left the NBC studios:
All they said was ‘Jen’ and we were screaming and crying and just jumping around excited,” Hudson said. “Then I had to run out there on stage and do my interview and hop on stage and sing, and I didn’t even know what I was doing or what was happening because it was so overwhelming. I’ve never experienced that many emotions in one minute…a second…a moment.
I’m just grateful that I’m here, because out of all the ‘Idols,’ over 70,000 people that auditioned, three, four or five different seasons of ‘American Idol,’ 782 Effies, what were the odds of me being here right now and to receive such an honor as to be a Golden Globe nominee? Even if I don’t get it, just to be able to consider that is enough for me, really.
I talked to my mom, of course she’s the first person I called,” Hudson told EUR. “And she was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m so happy! I’m so excited!’ Then she said, ‘Okay, baby, what exactly is the Golden Globes?’

I guess I’m the only one who is not totally impressed with her voice. She is good but not all that! I grew up with such as as Stephanie Mills, Jennifer HOliday, Vesta, Whitney and Patti.who had all the three P’s..Pitch, Pace, and Power. The new breed lacks some or all of those qualities as well as emotion behind the voice. I’m not comparing Jennifer Hudson the old divas but at least put emotion into the song. It’s the same with Beyonce.

I kind of agree with Dee, but with the exception of maybe Whitney and Stephanie…these women were older when they came on the scene. I think some of the more authentic emotion is based on experience. On top of which I think the old school diva’s were hungry, they weren’t automtically given a few million or even several hundred thousand to star in this or be on that. Shirley Murdock sang with passion because she had a natural love for singing, not because there were endorsement deals and movies to do.
Now money is a given. And the craft is compromised. And many people who will post today will not have a clue who some of the other people you talked about–so there’s no frame of reference.
If all I have is a contemporary artist to measure the 3 P’s then yeah Jhud is doing one hell of job.

Wow #4, I grew up listening to the artists you mentioned (Stephanie Mills was my first concert), but I so disagree about J-Hud. I think she has the *it* that you mention lacking in most of today’s artists. There are very, very few young singers who I think can hold a candle to the legends you mentioned, but I believe J-Hud is one of them. I think she GETS IT. I saw her perform “I Am Changing,” (don’t know if this is the same clip), but I was MOST impressed with her thoughtfulness to the emotion of the song. I thought she did a wonderful job translating the meaning of the song with her voice.
Anywho, I guess everyone will see things differently. I love JHUD, and she is about to blow up, but she needs to tone down that little ‘X-tra’ she gives to the media (asking what are the Golden Globes?). Wait ’til you aren’t in front of the media and ask someone behind the scenes who is in the know. That just sounds ignorant, and no need to offend the people who are trying to honor you.

She sounded really good. I am impressed with an amateur acting and sounding the way she did in Dreamgirls. Her first time out and already nominated for a Golden Globe with Hollywood verterans is very impressive. I think her mother was the one asking what are the Golden Globes, not her. She would be in another worldt not to know what the Golden Globes or Oscars are hearing all year that she should win them both.

I don’t think anybody is doubting that home girl can sing or even SANG. She’s beautiful, her stage presence is awesome.
But parts of her delivery seems acrobatic to me like….hear what I can do….and less organic like…hear how I really feel.
Maybe its unfair to make Stephanie Mills, Vesta, Shirley Murdock, Jennifer Holliday, Ms Patti Patti comparisons…but she’s the first person to ever come close. When Dee mentioned Vesta I thought about “Congratulations” there was nothing technical about it. It was pure and unadulterated emotion.

I think she has the potential, yes she is young. Shirley Murdock and Stephanie Mills are all great, but they were mature women. She is 17, and I don’t know too many 17 year olds (her american idol agae) past or present who had all the p’s pitch, pace, and power.
Alot of these women were singing out of pain and experiences. Give her time and she will get there. She is humble, yet a natural diva. This is her first song. I don’t know if you are true fan of the artist you named, but many of them have albums and songs that were never released for a reason. For a beginner, she is great, and real. Whitney Houston, Mary Wilson, and Oprah have all seen something in her. Hopefully she want let Hollywood execs turn her into a pop star and ruin her potential for greatness, as they have done with many artist.
Soul takes time, you cna’t fake it.

Here comes stardom for Jennifer Hudson…..
Here comes the men trying to get down with her for her celeb status.
Here come the shady managers and friends who want to tell her what to do not to help her career but to get themselves money and position.
Here comes the fans who get attached and then want you to do, sing and look however THEY decide.
Here come the accolades, the awards, and the parties….here comes the gassing up.
Here comes the scripts for every movie coming up that requires a “full-figured” black woman who can sing.
Here comes the money that you don’t know how to manage.
I’m hoping that Jennifer has enough sense to keep family close — and not the jealous ones who’ll come forward to leech off her success - stay humble and keep focused on her craft and not the fame…
This blaze of stardom is nice…but that does not a career make. Stay humble and stay focused, that’s my advice.

First of all GOD mad us all unique so why should we compare her to Patti LaBelle,Vesta, Stephanie Mills or Jennifer Holliday? She is Jennifer Hudson and her talent is pure and natural and whatever accolades she recives based on her debut in “Dreamgirls” she fully deserves. Our expectation is if you’re not “eye candy” you’re not good enough and it is unjust and unfair. I have no doubt that she will surpass many people who are already considered stars in the entertainment industry. She is humble, sincere and focused and has deep spritual convictions that will surely help her on her road to success. That alone will make her soar to the mountain tops, the fact that American Idol did not recognize the level of her talent is unfortunate. But most of these reality tv talent shows fall short on what real talent is ,and several platinum artists got kicked off of these shows and are ultimately successful today. I voted for her every week because she exemplified what real talent was in every essence of the word..

“….I don’t know if you are true fan of the artist you named, but many of them have albums and songs that were never released for a reason.”
—————–
@35
That would make us as inorganic as the theme of our arguement. And what is the definition of a “true fan”?
Why would one site a person who made huge rumbles in the R&B circuit and have no appreciation for them and not know their body of work.
I’m sorry as much of a talent I think Jhud is, I think more of the love for JHUD is rooted in the absolute disdain of Beyonce and her oversaturtation. Everybody loves the underdog-but what happens when Jhud’s star becomes really bright? What happens when she no longer belongs to you as a the metaphorical little engine that could.
I was raised in a household that played tons and tons of Donny Hathaway, Nina Simone, Nancy Wilson, Patty Labelle and the bluebells, Curtis Mayfield, EWF, etc etc….that kind of appreciation for music logically goes into Stephanie Mills, Vesta, Lalah Hathaway etc. You don’t fake that kind of love. Sorry.
And I think Jhud is beautiful so I don’t buy the–”she doesn’t fit the mold which is why we have beef”.

JENNIFER HUDSON HAS THAT IT FACTOR. JUST LIKE AN OPRAH, OR MARY J, OR ARETHA. I DISAGREE. I THINK THAT THERE IS EMOTION BEHIND HER VOICE. WE HAVE GOTTEN A SMALL GLIMPSE OF HER STRUGGLES AND GROWTH. WHEN SHE SINGS, I FEEL IT. SHE DOESN’T PERFORM TO PLEASE PEOPLE, SHE SINGS FROM HER SOUL. THAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BTWN HER AND PEOPLE LIKE BEYONCE. ALTHOUGH B HAS AN AMAZING VOICE, THERE IS NO PASSION IN HER SONGS. YOU DON’T FEEL THAT EMOTION B/C IN REAL LIFE SHE NEVER SHOWS IT. SHE’S ALWAYS “ON”. I CALL HER A ROBOT. LOL. I CAN APPRECIATE JENNIFER HUDSON AND ALL HER GLORY. SHINE ON LIL’ MAMA!!! RBG’S FOR LIFE!!

O.K. look mutha f***ers…. J Hudds has a beautiful voice, yes she can sing really well, but people like JHudd comes a dime a dozen. In my honest opinion, she doesnt have the star quality that people look for in an artist. It is messed up that but O so true that her fame may be just for a short while. Think about the girls like, Kelly Price and Deborah Cox who both have voices that are very very similar to JHudd but where are they now? So just because she can sing really good doesn’t mean she will be here to stay. Her personality isn’t all that great to me.
Also with that being said, why does everybody try to compare JHudd and Beyonce? There is no comparison, they are apples and oranges. Beyonce’ is a very talented singer and she is beautiful. She is an entertainer. That is why she is the topic of a lot of discussions good and bad. That is why everyone tries to point out her flaws. We isolate Beyonce’ and we talk about her weaves and wigs when everybody in Hollywood including no matter what color they are rocks the weaves and the wigs. So off you stupid ignorant a$$ people are some damn hypocrites. Beyonce has been in the game since she was 15 years of age and she is still here so what does that tell you. Beyonce’ and Jhudd are both gifted singers. Jhudd’s has a more powerful voice but Beyonce’ sings with more passion and her runs are beautiful. They are both gifted, young, black women so focus on that then all of the animosity against B like she has done something to you personally.

The supposed rift between Beyoncé Knowles and her Dreamgirls costar, Jennifer Hudson, may have been greatly exaggerated.
Rumors have been swirling that Beyoncé is miffed because Hudson is the movie’s obvious breakout star for her role as powerhouse vocalist Effie White. But sources told me today that Beyoncé has always known Effie was a showier role than Beyoncé’s own soft-spoken Deena Jones. “Beyoncé is a confident girl,” a pal tells me. “She doesn’t get jealous of people.”
So, where did these rumors get started? It sounds like Beyoncé’s father, Matthew Knowles, may be to blame.
I’m told things soured between the Knowles family and Ms. Hudson because Daddy Knowles tried unsuccessfully to woo the former American Idol contestant as a client to his Houston-based Music World Entertainment management company.
“He tried to sign her halfway through production of Dreamgirls because he wanted to be her manager,” my source says, “but Jennifer turned him down. That’s when things really went south.”
Although Hudson already had management during this time, a source tells me Matthew has recently told some people he’s actually been managing her “for a while now.”
“He walks around saying he’s her manager, and everyone is like, ‘No, you’re not,’ ” a source says.
In other words, it doesn’t look like Beyoncé has a problem with Hudson getting so much of the Dreamgirls attention. It looks like it’s Daddy’s bruised ego that’s causing the ruckus.
I’m told that Daddy was so insulted by her refusal to sign with him that he demanded the movie be re-edited to lessen Hudson’s screen time and boost Beyoncé’s. He argued that his daughter was being shortchanged but was rebuffed by the studio and the filmmakers. In one meeting with director Bill Condon, I’m told, Beyoncé’s mom, Tina, went into a “tirade” about how he ruined the movie for her daughter. “It was supposed to be her Oscar role,” Tina hissed, according to a source.
Matthew and Tina Knowles did not return calls by deadline.
As for Beyoncé and Hudson, a source close to Dreamgirls says they get along just fine. “It’s the dad,” the source said. “He’s just like Curtis, Jamie Foxx’s character in Dreamgirls.”
All the drama aside, today was a good day to be a Dreamgirl. The movie nabbed five Golden Globes nominations. Two for Beyoncé, one apiece for Hudson and Eddie Murphy and another for Best Picture in the musical or comedy category.

Her singing ability stands for itself.
It saddends me that instead of certain ‘people’ showing love, hate is shown.
When will we learn that there is enough money and spotlight for everyone.
No need for seperation this should be about celebration for all success from this project.
Ms. Hudson continue to shine.

#4 and #10 I agree with you.
If you grew up on the old school music, you would see the difference in music now and today. What happened to the soul or emotion in music? What happened to feeling that singer’s pain or hearing that singer sing that song your pain in the same way of how you’re feeling? A powerful song isn’t dictated by how much screaming, yelling, or growling there is on it, WHO is singing it, or even the words. It’s how the song is delivered and that’s the difference between JHud and these other chicks out here. There is no emotion in songs anymore. One individual highly guilty of it is….Beyonce. Sorry to say. The words of her songs are absolutely powerful but the delivery leaves you like, “Is that it?”
