JENNIFER HUDSON PERFORMS ON THE TODAY SHOW

Gloden Globe nominee Jennifer Hudson performed on the Today Show yesterday, right after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the Nominations. She performed “One Night Only” and “I Am Changing” from the Dreamgirls movie. Youtube links are provided..

Lee Baily of eurweb.com, had a chance to speak with her after she left the NBC studios:

All they said was ‘Jen’ and we were screaming and crying and just jumping around excited,” Hudson said. “Then I had to run out there on stage and do my interview and hop on stage and sing, and I didn’t even know what I was doing or what was happening because it was so overwhelming. I’ve never experienced that many emotions in one minute…a second…a moment.

I’m just grateful that I’m here, because out of all the ‘Idols,’ over 70,000 people that auditioned, three, four or five different seasons of ‘American Idol,’ 782 Effies, what were the odds of me being here right now and to receive such an honor as to be a Golden Globe nominee? Even if I don’t get it, just to be able to consider that is enough for me, really.

I talked to my mom, of course she’s the first person I called,” Hudson told EUR. “And she was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m so happy! I’m so excited!’ Then she said, ‘Okay, baby, what exactly is the Golden Globes?’

I hear you 118, but thank God we have a small # of artists that stay true to themselves. A good example is Alicia Keys, that’s why I have soo much respect for her. To me, it seems as if she’s into it for the love of music and the money is secondary. Her first contract/record deal tried to make her into something she wasn’t (probably sex to sell) and she actually walked away from that deal. India.arie keeps it real and of course MJB ‘updates’ her style of music (Family Affair) but at the same time she remains true to herself.

Ashanti went at it the other way. It’s funny b/c it took me a while to realize that Ashanti wasn’t being herself when she first came out (acting all gangsta). But it seems like she is being more true to herself nowadays.

I still enjoy ballads. Someone mentioned J-Hud and Fantasia doing a duet. Sounds good to me. Whatever J-Hud does, if she stays true to herself I think she will have a large fanbase. And I could careless if she’s a size 18 or 6.

    Oooh Dee,
Lyfe Jenning is the truth, I love Anthony Hamilton’s cd too, and where the hell is Maxwell?

@Sexy what you talkin’, I love me some ballads too. Remember when they use to play them in the club? When you asked the person you were feeling at the time to dance so you could get close to them? Lol

  3. Queshia

jhud has a very soulful voice I wish her all the best on her golden globe. she seems to have shed a few more pounds.

  4. girl1`

    let the true star shine

  5. SAFFIRE IN NEW YORK

Im not going to judge J-Hud yet. I just hope she has the best of success and wish her very well in her career. I do not feel the need to compare her to Beyonce because she and J-Hud are 2 different singers with very different singing styles. And marcusmax please, I visit Hipandpop.com everyday and Im a regular on there but dont come in here trying to disrespect anybody’s blog. Concreteloop has its issues. The people on here are just as petty and immature and ignorant at that blog site. So there is no differences.

    Dee,

Yeah, “I Feel Good” was the jam, but after I heard “Comfort of a Man” live, it was ovah! LOL

As far as current talent who will have to “carry the SOULFUL torch” for the new generation, here’s my list:

    -Alicia Keys
    -Lyfe Jennings
-Jamie Foxx (homeboy got it going ON vocally…”Do What it Do” is my ISHT!!!)
-Fantasia (once she’s over her “wild” streak…LOL)
-Mary J is still representin’ every day, all day even though she’s getting “old” by industry standards.
-Keyshia Cole has the potential, but she’s not there yet.
    -Trey Songz has the talent
-Jill Scott (love her to death even though she doesn’t get mainstream airplay too much)
-Jaheim has the potential, but WHERE IS HE???
-Lauren Hill’s batty self needs to be leading the charge…LOL (Funny that her lead song on Miseducation was “Lost One”…LOL)
-Maxwell got talent like a MUG…again…where is he???
-Usher…gotta give it to him. He’s classic R&B. His music will still be played in 20-30 years. I can hear them playing “Burn” forever.

  7. 0UTSP0KEN

go head ms jennifer! cant wait till dreamgirls.

  8. Tracey

CONGRATS TO JENNFER HUDSON!!! Great performances, hope she wins the GG and the Oscar!

  9. Tracey

    JENNIFER HUDSON IS THE TRUTH!!

  10. BEYONCEGOTOSLEEP!!

Even though her and Bey are totally different, its just refreshing to see another face. I mean Bey is a good singer and gorgeous, but she needs to step back for a little while, she is all over the map!!

I remember when it was like this for Jennifer Lopez, she was everywhere, it lasted about a year and then Jennifer faded away. Well its been going on for awhile for Beyonce and its just too much. I wish her much success but take a brake. When people see you every day alll day, its not good. Let people miss you, Like Usher, he seems to have taken a brake, Now Im wondering where is he and is he doing another CD. Let people miss you, she seems to be doing all of this like she scared that if she leaves people will forget about her.

Take a break bey, get married, have some kids.(Help her, cause when she has kids, her hips are gonna go buck wild)

  11. BKWY

she’s alright,i mean she’s just a got a churchy voice, thats loud which doesn’t equate to having a strong voice, coz her vocal control is still shaky and she lacks versatily, she needs to work on her craft some more.plus y’all must be delusional in putting her in the same level of whitney, patti and aretha

  12. OVERSEAS MESSENGER

Jennifer Hudson have arrived…She is now in control of her own destiny. The people with money and power (white america) have stamped her ticket (accepted). In a few weeks they will give her the first accolade (Golden Globe Award). They have started to mention her name in the same sentence as their beloved Bette Midler and Barbara Streisand (Whitney Houston would have been mention also but we know her story) If she play the game correctly she will be around in the next 20 or 30 years. The story will soon be told. She will either be a success and have her own E! Network special Behind the Music in a few years. Or she will be on VH1 Where Are They Now. I am thinking she has a bright future ahead of her.

Listen to her sing the signature song from dreamgirls

  13. EBZ

I don’t like the first 45 seconds ’cause she sung it too low…too from the gut but after that omg……flaweless performance.

  14. rcbeauty

whoever doesn’t think Jennifer Hudson can sing needs to get there ears checked. that girl can blow! and stop comparing her to other people she is her own person with her own sound.

  15. NIKKI

  17. zudoir

Jennifer Hudson is the shiznik! Just like other talents (Whitney Houston, Debra Cox, Monica, Tamia, Shanice) didn’t hate on Beyonce when she started to get recognized (and they can really blow) Beyonce shouldn’t hate on Jennifer the way she’s been doing. Beyonce is jealous because she can’t hold a candle to Jennifer Hudson. Somebody should tell Beyonce that “green’ doesn’t look good on her. Beyonce is Jade!

The director of “Dreamgirls” has eyes and ears, he could see that Beyonce couldn’t act and he could hear that she couldn’t sing any Jennifer Holiday songs. They needed a “REAL” voice for those numbers and that’a “EXACTLY” what they got in Jennifer Hudson. Read on:

HOLLYWOOD – Pop star Beyonce Knowles was desperate to land the lead role of Effie in Dreamgirls, but was forced to take a smaller part because the director wasn’t convinced she could act.

Despite appearances in comedies Goldmember and The Pink Panther, Knowles couldn’t convince director Bill Condon she would be able to tackle the dramatic role–which eventually went to Jennifer Hudson.

Knowles insists she was happy to take the smaller part to prove her talent as an actress, saying, “I’m already a star. I already have nine Grammys. Everyone knows I can sing.

“I did this because I wanted people to know that I can act and I can play someone so different from myself.”

The “Irreplaceable” singer admits she would have loved to have sung Effie’s show-stopping number “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” and would have gladly gained weight for the role.

Instead she lost weight to play Deena in the movie.

She explains, “I wish I could have gained 20 pounds and played Effie. I absolutely would have, but Bill didn’t even believe that I could be Deena. So imagine if I would’ve said, ‘Bill, I want to be Effie.’

But Knowles has high praise for her costar’s performance, adding, “Jennifer Hudson had such pressure. First of all, never being in a film and never having done an album and still having to live up to those expectations, she did incredible.”

    ——————————————————————————–
It’s obvious Beyonce is jealous of Jennifer. Beyonce thought she had the starring and most memorable role in “Dreamgirls.” In one interview Beyonce said that she had dreamed all of her life to play the role of Deena in “Dreamgirls” yet the above article proves that to be a lie. She now knows that Effie’s role makes the movie and she wishes she could have gotten it. If ahe had, where would she haven gotten the voice to sing the songs? What was she planning, Jennifer Holiday voice overs?

She just wanted to be the one out front now that she knows what the starring role is!Why does she thinks she always deserves the spotlight?

  19. zudoir

#136, I like Toni Braxton but she is no real singer. She talks most of her songs. I mean, the songs work for her voice. But a strong singer she is not. I agree with those who say Ciara can’t sing. She is like Madonna, everything sounds the same.

  20. beyonceclitorus

Did you listen to her performance tho? I’m not sayin she’s a vocalist but U cant tell me that her tone and bravado wasnt excellent.

  21. unknown

That was off tha chain!! I’m glad she’s gettin all this hype and attention.. she deserves it…

  22. what you know about that

    @132

GOOSEBUMPS from jhud’s redition of I am tellin’ you! Granted, Jennifer Holiday owns that song by all means. She was the first to do it and she killed it. But let us all give Jhud her credit….her version is killer! For those of you saying her voice isn’t all that….most of you are probably beyonce fans that can’t handle Jhud’s KILLER performance!

  23. To Tell The Truth

J-Hud commented on 106 the other day that she and ‘you know who’ hung out the other day.

I wonder who called who? I am sure it wasn’t J-Hud. J-Hud seems really sweet and she is still very ‘star-struck’. I have learned in life that a lot of ppl can see your potential and maybe you can’t. I really don’t think she realizes how much of a threat she is to the entertainers of her generation. She always seems so shocked when veterans praise her.

That so-called hanging out the other day…I attribute that to the saying…Keep your friends close and your enemies/competition even closer. That outing was to ‘show’ ppl that the jealousy rumors are not true. Whatever!

J-Hud stick with hanging out with your family and friends. Not someone that you are an obvious threat to.

Besides, when has ‘you know who’ ever hung out with anybody besides her family, boyfriend and members of her former group? I can’t think of one soul, why now?

  24. dRIPPIN_IN_dOLLAZ

I’m a VERY STRAIGHT female, but hearing Jennifer sing made my nipples get hard…I mean, I had chills. I’m so happy for her! She’s on her way and hopefully she’ll get alot of fan-based support (and some support underwear to cover the navel indentation). She looks alot better physically than she did on American Idol. At least she’s not wearing that loud hot pink get up Simon told her that she needed to throw away. Gone Jen, do you, do yo thang girl.

She should only be compared to HERSELF and how well she improves. It’s not necessary to compare JHUD to others like Stephanie (The Wiz) Mills, Vesta Vesta Bo Besta, Cracked Out Hell-To-Tha-Naw Whitney, and Screamin’ Yellow Zonkers Patti.

  25. Lyn

I am happy to see Jennifer getting all this pub, especially since you received such a tongue-lashing from Simone on American Idol. I love great, NATURAL singing. Check out my blog: http://www.singingfromthesoul.org/singing

  26. T.Combs

    SHE CAN SING…
    GO GIRL…

  27. halcyon

SWEETJAZX21…I agree. That performance left me cold. I was a fan of hers early on in AI, but she lost me because I never felt like she connected to the audience and the quirky faces she makes when she sings become increasingly annoying. I am happy for her though. She just isn’t my cup of tea.

  28. #4, I’m with you. I’ve tried to hop on the Dreamgirls bandwagon, but I just cannot get into this at ALL.

  29. Whoever said her voice is , alright, please tell me what or who sounds better than that besides the obvious pics, Patti, Shirley Murdock, Teena Marie, Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan etc….! Jennifer’s voice is beyond amazing! DAMN!

  30. #136 Toni who? That bitch couldn’t sing like Tony Toni Tone if she wanted to. Ciara can’t sing no matter what the young ones say I like her songs (mainly for the beat and background) But she has no talent besides dancing and performing well. She can damn sure dance but she’s so boney she ain’t moving shit! Ciara CAN’T SING!!!!!!!!!! Toni Braxton used to be the bomb I loved her and that’s an insult to her , Sorry Toni girl they don’t know any better!

  31. And Ciara wasn’t singing live, she made her noises uh and all that extra stuff but she was lypsyncing like crazy! Why I don’t know b/c the song ain’t singing about nothing, corny as hell!

  32. Be true to you

    Good for her

  33. Liyah

yES SHE CAN SING…SO CAN BEYONCE YA;LL JUST NEED TO DROWN IT ..TONI BRAXTON HAS A BEAUTIFUL VOICE I WONDER WHAT HAPPEN TO HER MAYBE SHE NEED A BREAK FOR HER FAM

  34. Liyah

I THINK THME TO SHOULD GET TOGETHER AND MAKE A SONG OR SOMETHING IT WILLL BE THE BOMB I KNOW IT CUZ BEYONCE CAN SING AND JENNIFER CAN SING…. TWO GREAT PEOPLE WITH TWO GREAT VOICES SHOULD SING TOGETHER

  35. ANGEL

Some of you guy’s on here is speaking like your asses is still locked in the past and this is 2006. Jenifer cannot be Diana Ross and the supreme’s that era has passed. Yes that music back then was powerful, powerful they sang a couple of the old songs in the beginning of the movie and it was great. It’s not fair to Jennifer to compare her to that. she wasn’t even born when some of those records were made. Let’s give the young people a chance and let’s start by not comparing them to other people and allowing them the chance, space and opportunities to develop into their own individual being.

  36. She is more than alright SHE’S GREAT and her performance in Dream Girls proves it.

  37. randita1

I really don’t understand what all the fuss is about. I appreciate all the flowers in the garden, not which one is better, more beautiful, etc. I saw Jhud and Fantasia in concert for AI singing Beyonce & Alicia Keys TOGETHER… They’re all wonderful. The high horse some of you ‘commentators’ are sitting on is unvelievable! To see ANY black woman use the gifts given to her is a phenomenal thing, and as you wannabe critics sit any type senseless drivel on this page, these women are fulfilling their dreams and taking home earnings for it. Comments about being a drop out, and ‘she’s no Patti’ and all doesn’t make them look bad, it makes YOU look bad. In short, SO WHAT!?!?!
Jennifer, Beyonce, and the rest of the new crop of artists are all strong in ther own right, so why would we need to be negative towards any or all of them? Dreamgirls was a wonderful movie – just like when I saw the play with my grandparents in NYC at 11. Kudos to Loretta Devine, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Jennifer Holiday, as well as Beyonce, Jennifer , Anika Noni Rose and Sharon Leal…They made us stand up and take notice then and now.
Finally – just an observation. How many of you typed your statements while recording to try to break into the music industry? I know 20 or so wannabe R&B and hip-hop artists who express their disdain for these women as they go to work at the telemarketing company, fast food restaurants and in housekeeping at the hospital. Talented some of you may be, but the truth of the matter is some people don’t appreciate another’s sucess if it’s greater than their own. It’s sad really… Live for your own dreams and try not to harbor such animosity for someone with talent. Guess we’re all Simon Cowell in one way or another LOL.
