NEW YORK (Reuters) - The movie adaptation of the famed Broadway musical “Dreamgirls” stars Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx, chart-topping singer Beyonce Knowles and long-time favorite Eddie Murphy.
But in true show business tradition, an overweight unknown more used to failure than success is stealing the show.
“It’s the biggest honor I could possibly get. I’m so grateful,” Jennifer Hudson says of the buzz that she may win an Oscar for her Cinderella turn in the role of Effie White.
“I’m so grateful. All I wanted was the part, and to hear this now? It’s very exciting,” the actress and singer told Reuters.
If Hudson is surprised by the talk of an Oscar, it’s because her resume was rather thin: She is a college drop-out with six months’ experience singing on a cruise ship who later reached a mere seventh place on the TV audition show American Idol.
Now her silver screen debut has already won her fans even before the movie opens in New York and Los Angeles on December 15 and nationwide on December 25. At media screenings, the press have greeted Hudson’s performance with whooping applause.
Her biggest ovation comes during her rendition of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” — the emotional show stopper in the original 1981 Broadway show, which won six Tony Awards.
The New York Observer described her performance of that song as “five mellifluous, molto vibrato minutes that have suddenly catapulted Ms. Hudson … into the position of front-runner for the best supporting actress Oscar.”
Newsweek said that when moviegoers hear Hudson sing the song, she “is going to raise goose bumps across the land.”
The movie tells the story of a group of black female singers and is loosely based on the story of Diana Ross and The Supremes and the Motown record company. Hudson’s part is that of the hefty, difficult singer in the trio.

Hudson credits her voice to her Baptist upbringing in Chicago, where she belted out songs in church from age 7.
“I used to sing in the church choir,” she said. “People would say it was unusual for such a small girl to have such a big voice. They would say, ‘She sounds like she’s grown.”‘
Casting director Jay Binder, known for his work on major Broadway productions, said he is proud of choosing Hudson.
“It’s not like we found her working at the telephone company, but it’s the best piece of casting this office has ever done,” he said in an interview.
The part was no slam dunk for Hudson. After her first audition, Binder told her he liked her but said while she could make it on Broadway, she would have to lose some weight and work on her image if she were to make it in Hollywood.
“She was not as glamorous as we needed her to be. She needed to develop her figure in a more pleasing way,” Binder said. “We then went on, over the next six months, to see every African-American woman of a certain age on both coasts.”
After a nationwide search, countless auditions and open-casting calls failed to turn up the perfect Effie White, Binder remembered Hudson and called her back.
“When she came back six months later she was absolutely gorgeous. She was not a girl but a woman,” he said. “Without a question, it was her part. Whatever she had done, she now had sex appeal and was more comfortable in herself.”
Now as Hudson promotes “Dreamgirls” and is preparing to record an album for legendary recording executive Clive Davis, who made stars of the likes of Whitney Houston and Alicia Keys, she’s finding all the attention a little hard to believe.
“I have to pinch myself,” she said. “Am I really doing interviews? Is this really happening? Even on the movie set, I was stopping and asking myself, ‘Am I dreaming?”‘

When the film was over, there was another standing O, and the entire audience stood still and watched the main end credits.

Co-star Beyonce was long gone by then. She worked the red carpet, did her publicity and then split with boyfriend Jay-Z. She told me she’d rented a private plane and was ferrying him off for a birthday surprise. Insiders were split on whether they went as far as St. Bart’s or only Atlantic City.

But Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy, Hudson, writer-director Bill Condon and a huge number of Paramount-Viacom officials (starting with Brad Grey) were all in attendance. So were Queen Latifah and a lot of other guests who were bowled over by the film.

Yep, i heard that too, but you know Beyonce doesn’t normally respond to ANY rumors, she just remains quiet. So for her to speak, actually speaks volumes, cause it says that there’s possibly some truth to it and it’s actually getting to her, and why would it get to you if its not true, she said before she doesn’t respond to rumors and negativity, and we all know that she rarely speaks on any rumors to confirm or deny anything, don’t matter what it is, but yet she chose to speak on this one, cause it’s my belief is she jealous of the attention J. If Jennifer Hudson is receiving praise for her role ,than more likely than not its well deserved. She is as they say Raw talent. They took a huge chance in casting her because in Hollywood terms shes an unknown. Unlike the other cast members she doesnt have a lengthy stint in the industry! She was a part of american Idol and lost , wasnt even first runner up, yet she was cast for this movie . The director amost passed her by because of her “look” ! Broadway ,tv whatever Jennifer Holiday (the original Effie) in the broadway version of Dream Girls was not a small woman, and she didnt have a small voice! Alot of talent is being by passed by an industry who places more value on image than true talent. I think that all of the young ladies look nice and elegant!

As a fellow fuller figured woman, I love that. I think Jennifer Hudson should be commended for giving 200% to her role in the movie. She gave it all she had and now she is reaping the rewards. She should be very happy with herself and not let anybody make her feel bad about doing well!!!

“Dreamgirls” premiered last night at the Ziegfeld in New York — and Jennifer Hudson got a standing ovation in the middle of the movie when she finished singing “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going.”

When the film was over, there was another standing O, and the entire audience stood still and watched the main end credits.

Co-star Beyonce was long gone by then. She worked the red carpet, did her publicity and then split with boyfriend Jay-Z. She told me she’d rented a private plane and was ferrying him off for a birthday surprise. Insiders were split on whether they went as far as St. Bart’s or only Atlantic City.

Beyonce Knowles has slammed rumours of a feud between herself and Dreamgirls co-star Jennifer Hudson, insisting there was no bad blood while filming the movie.

The Irreplaceable star claims she knew going in that her role playing Deena Jones was less dramatic than Hudson’s part as Effie White and she didn’t have a problem with it.

She explains, “I knew that the character that I played wasn’t the star. She wasn’t the underdog.

“She didn’t have the struggle and the pain and the dramatic scenes that Effie had, and I was fine with that.

“It’s really unfortunate that everyone is saying I’m jealous of Jennifer. It hurts my heart because it’s so cliched. They’re saying I’m mad when I knew going into this that I was playing Deena.

“Because I’m a star they just automatically assume that I’m not humble enough to sit down and take a back seat, which I am.”

The minute I got to the part where Beyonce talked about gaining 20 pounds I was like “Whoa!!!” That is offensive because Jennifer is playing the role at her natural weight.

Second of all, Beyonce talks about how she was okay with coming in and playing a lesser role because she’s “already a star.” If that’s true, the ONLY reason why she didn’t have a problem with it is because she thought her star power would push her role as Deena front and center, regardless of how the role was written…she had no idea that Jennifer would come in and blow everyone away with her talent…if she had known that, do you really think a big “star” would come in an accept a lesser role?
