Actor Mike Evans, best known as Lionel Jefferson in the TV comedy series “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons,” has died. He was 57.
Evans died of throat cancer Dec. 14 at his mother’s home in Twentynine Palms, said his niece, Chrystal Evans.
Evans, along with Eric Monte, also created and wrote for “Good Times,” one of the first TV comedy series that featured a primarily black cast.
Evans kept the role of Lionel when “The Jeffersons” launched in 1975. The hit show was a spinoff featuring bigoted Archie Bunker’s black neighbours in Queens who “move on up to the East Side” of Manhattan.
Evans was replaced by Damon Evans (no relation) for four years, then he returned to the series from 1979 to 1981.

I as many did love this lionel from All in the Family w/Archie & to the Jeffersons. What day did he pass away, was it today. I am deeply sadden by this & I as many other had not a clue that he worked as co creator of Good Times. Two of the best black sitcoms that I truly enjoyed & 2come i think.

I was very sorry to hear abut the death of this wonderful and outgoing actor. I did not realize that he co-wrote and created Good Times. I now know where the name Michael Evans (a charactor on the show) came from. That was very creative. Rest in peace, and thanks for the laughter.

You learn something every day. I was getting caught up on my Jet mags and came across the article “Where is the Cast of Good Times” (8/28/08). I watched the show for years,- as a kid, along w/ All In the Family and The Jeffersons but did not know that Eric Monte and Mike Evans were the brains behind “Good Times”. I was shocked to read that Mike has passed on. I would like to know – did Mike use any tobacco products ? and did he copy right any of his material ? Why weren’t he and Mr. Monte paid ?

I was so surprised to just find out that Mike Evans has died and that he was a co-creator of Good Times. I use to see that name but never put 2 and 2 together. I use to watch the Jefferson just to watch him I use to love how he would to Archie Bunker. My heart goes out to him family and friends. I thought he was a good actor.
