BRANDY SUED FOR $50 MILLION
Wednesday, January 31, 2007

actual footage from the accident via TMZ.com
The parents of the woman killed in a car crash involving Brandy are suing the R&B singer for $50 million.
TMZ obtained the lawsuit filed today in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Lawyers for the family of the deceased claim, “Defendant Brandy Norwood was driving recklessly in the freeway when her car collided with Awatif Aboudihaj’s car.”
The $50 million lawsuit seeks both compensatory and punitive damages.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles City Attorney is considering the CHP’s recommendation to criminally charge Brandy with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. VIEW THE LAWSUIT DOCUMENT
I mean it was going to come sooner or later. It would be even worse if the police proceeds with that vehicular manslaughter charge, where she can face up to a $1,000 fine and a year in jail. Doubt if it will go that far but, what a web woven for Brandy…
But then again, should she be charged with something? We see celebs get off all the time just for being famous, yet she wasn’t drunk or drugged. Is a $50 million reward to the family is enough?

Hell yea!! Thats too much money. If she wasn’t famous they wounldn’t be sueing. Its simply not fair. I mean the girl was not drunk and she was not on any drugs. It was just an accident that ended up fatal. I can’t belived they are putting all her business in the media like this. Havn’t she been through enough. I mean she killed someone on accident and everytime you go on the web or watch the news thats all she sees. Leave her alone and let her get through this alone.

Personally, I think that charging her criminally is crazy. It was an accident. No drinking. No drugs. I’m still confused why the person who actually caused the woman’s death (the other car) has not been mentioned. TECHNICALLY that driver was apart of the accident as well but they’ll only sue Brandy b/c she has money. Yes, Brandy should have to pay some damages but $50mil? That’s a little bit much for an accident. But no charges should be brought.

I do not see the logic behind suing for $50 million. I can maybe understand the family wanting Brandy to foot any bills that were incurred due to the accident (ambulance/hospital bills-if used, funeral cost, etc.) but nothing more.

Sorry to say, but I think the lawsuit is JUSTIFIED. It only takes one to be empathetic to the situation. This woman was KILLED, her life can never be gotten back. I wonder how many on this board would sue for less if it were their wife/mother/daughter? The bottom line is..if Brandy is found to have been negligent (i.e. cell phone talking)and the CAUSE of the accident then that is surely grounds to pay judgment in a “wrongful death” lawsuit.
It is what it is, I can’t defend Brandy just because she’s black. Hell, from the looks of the victim’s name she TOO was black (African, most likely).

i hate it that the lady died in the crash, however i kinda think that they are sueing her because they know she has the money. id could understand more if they wanted her to pay for the person’s funeral expenses- but 50 mil? would they be treating her the same way if it was a sober non drugged non-famous person?

I think this is fucked up! $50 mil ain’t gon bring that lady back. If Joe Shmoe had hit her, they wouldn’t be able to file for that money because Joe wouldn’t have it. Believe me, my heart goes out to everyone involved (especially the family) but this stinks to high hell! It’s like extortion. Brandy, love her or hate her, MADE her own damn money through her dreams. It’s fucked up that these people want her loot. This situation pains me!~

#3 I COULDN’T AGREE WITH YOU MORE!! THIS IS SUCH A TRAGIC EVENT. I DO NOT BELIVE THAT BRANDY SHOULD BE CHARGED IN THE FIRST PLACE. IT CLEARLY SEEMS AS THOUGH THIS WAS AN ACCIDENT AND SHE WASN’T UNDER THE IKNFLUENCE OF ANYTHING. SECOND OF ALL, IF YOU HAVE EVER BEEN O ANY FREEWAY, CRAZY SHIT LIKE THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME!!! IF SOMEONE BREAKS IN FRONT OF YOU ND YOU DON’T HAVE SUFFICICIENT WARNING, THEN YU ARE GOING TO HIT THEM!! IT’S AS SIMPLE AS THAT!! AND SHE WAS DOING 65 WHICH IS THE SPEED LIMIT ON THE FREEWAY FOR CHRISTSAKES!!! SO I AM NOT UNDERSTANDING HOW THIS IS ANYTHING OTHER THAN AN ACCIDENT. LASTLY, I HAVE A BIG PROBLEM WITH THE FAMILY REQUESTING ANY MONET AT ALL!! WHY IS IT, WHEN CELEBRKITIES ARE INVOLVED IN CCIDENTS, THE PEOPLE TRY TO SQEEZE THEM FOR MONEY? WHAT MAKS THEM THINK THAT THEY ARE ENTITLED TO IT? I DON’T MEAN TO SOUND MEAN, BUT MOST LIKELY, THEIR DAUGHTER WAS NEVER GOING TO BE WORTH THAT MUCH OR EARN THAT IN HER LIFETIME, SO WH ARE THEY ENTITLED TO IT? I HAVE A PROBLEM WHEN PEOPLE ARE POOR AND THERE IS A DEATH AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN, THEY SMELL MONEY AND TRY TO GET IT!!! HOW IS IT FAIR THAT THEIR DAUGHTER IS DEAD AND YET IF THEY GET THIS MONEY, THEY WILL BE LIVING HIGH ON THE HOG OFF OF DEATH MONEY!! I THINK THY SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES…. ACCIDENTS LIKE THIS HAPPEN EVERY DAY TO REGULAR PEOPLE AND THEIR FAMILIES HAVE TO JUST ACEPT IT, PRAY AND MOVE ON, JUST AS THIS FAMILY SHOULD DO INSTEAD OF TRYNG TO USDE IT AS AN OPPOURTUNITY TO GET RICH……

One question though: Would we (and I’m including myself in this) feel differently about this if a rich, white celebrity had hit and killed a black person by accident and then the family sued that white celeb for $50 million?
Just asking…..food for though.

GUYS-
Someone sent me more pictures of this terrible tragedy yesterday. I sent it on to my email group and everyone was afraid to even open the remainder after they opened the first. Unbeknownst to me, it was this lady. The car is the same. The way it (the car) looked against the wall was unbelievable.
OMG! The pictures were HORRIFIC! I could stomach them but noone else on my list could. I just wanna say that AGAIN, my condolences to the deceased’s family!
I just can’t get that image out of my head! Brandy, our prayers go out to you and your family as well because this other family is not gonna give up until they feel justice has been served.

OK THIS IS REALLY PISSING ME OFF….
EVERYONE KEEPS ON COMMING HERE AND CALLING IT AN ACCIDENT AND BECAUSE IT WAS SUCH, BRANDY SHULDNT BE PUNISHED….BEUCASE SHE DIDNT GET UP THAT MORNING AND GET INTO HER CAR WITH THE INTENTION OF KILLING SOMEONE IN HER VEHICLE DOESNT MEAN THAT SHE CANT BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR R-E-C-K-L-E-S-S D-R-V-I-N-G…
IF SHE WAS TALKLING ON HER CELL, EATING OR WHATEVER AND CAUSED THIS COLLISION SHE SHOULD BE MADE TO PAY FOR THE CONSIQUENCES…I MEAN THE GIRLS CAR WAS TURNED INTO SOUP FOR GODS SAKE, SO WHATEVER BRANDY DID SHE FUCKED UP BIG TIME
FOR THOSE OF US WHO DRIVE WE’VE ALL BEEN CUT OFF, OVER TAKEN AND WHEN SOMEONE GIVES US A BAD DRIVE WE ALL HAVE THE SAME REACTION AND SAY “WHAT A FUCKING IDIOT” BUT KEEP ON DRIVING….BRANDY COULD HAVE VERY WELL BEEN ONE OF THOSE PUNKS ON THE ROAD THAT DAY AND THIS IS THE PRICE SHE HAS TO PAY…AN ENTIRE LIFE WAS LOST OVER STRAIGHT CARELESSNESS

Brandy will get through this with God’s help. Everyone is saying its not fair to sue, blah blah blah. Just because the victim’s family is seeking $50 mil, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll get it. They may get some $, but $50 mil, doubt it.
Let’s just wait and see how things unfold before we start calling Brandy “reckless” and the victim’s family “golddiggers”. That family has every right in the world to seek compensation for the loss of their loved one.
I know damn well some of you would be hiring an attorney, before you even identified the body. Get off their case.
If Brad Pitt or Denzel Washington killed your child accidently, you wouldn’t try to get some money? If you say no, you’re lying! GTFOH

I see your point sweety, but again, none of this would’ve happened if Brandy didn’t start it.
I’m not getting some of these posts that feel Brandy is faultless in this entire ordeal.
C’mon folx! She is responsible to a certain degree, whether you agree or not. If she wasn’t the city would not have picked up the case.
Let’s be realistic. Also, each state has a certain cap on civil cases. The family may be asking for $50M but it’s highly unlikely they will receive that or even close. But, their attorney has to come with an offer regardless of how insurmountable it might be!

Who In The Hell Left The Gate Open? AKA Blame It On The Rain
Wednesday, January 31, 2007 /
Now I’m just confused. Who came up with this amount of $? Did someone close their eyes and stick their hand in a hat? Okay yes, Brandy is a smart and saavy young business woman that has parlayed her talents into a career spanning over a decade. Yes, she will forever get royalties from album sales and Moesha reruns, but fiddy million dollars… I say got damn. Ain’t no way in sun by golly Jesus she has fiddy million bucks to just hand over.
This has sharky lawyer written all over it. Any other time the courts would consider how much the victim would have made up until retirement plus the cost of living and raising a child and come up with a figure from that. But it sure as hell ain’t fiddy million.
The US of A is a litigious society and where there is money to be made, please believe you will see some vultures. I hate to say it Brandy, but now’s the time you’re gonna find out who your true friends really are.
I think in some aspects they are using Brandy as an example. Matthew Broderick (Inspector Gadget, Ferris Bueller), Leiff Garrett (The Blue Lagoon), and Rebecca Gayhart (Urban Legends) have all had accidents which resulted in death, and never has the recourse been this extreme. Should Brandy be held accountable, of course, but if it’s out of the realm of what she’s able to do then what good does it make?
On a lighter note, and I hate to make fun of this situation. But when I came here and saw $50 milion dollars, I swear the scene from Rush Hour with Chris Tucker ran through my mind. The scene where the Consulate’s daughter was kidnapped and Chris was on the phone taking the ransom demands and the guy said $50 million dollars. Chris’s voice got all high and he said… “fiddy million dollars, fiddy million dollars, who you think you kidnapped… Chelsea Clinton”?
I know its not funny and I shouldn’t laugh but like the earlier post said, sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to finish listening to my Never Say Never album. I love that CD. brandy I love you and I’m still a fan.

There are no words to describe this disaster and I cannot believe some of you are joking about it. I do agree that the family needs to be compensated for the loss of life, but 50 million dollars is just extreme, bottom line..no way around it. It was a tragic accident that took a life and will probably cause Brandy emotional distress for the rest of her life. Just a horrible situation. Brandy better get on her knees and pray until they start to bleed, because only god can help her with this one. The money isn’t even the primary issue right now..just think of the emotional distress that must be going with the parties involved . Terrible, terrible situation.

People on here have examined this issue inside and out.
Brandy should pay. Brandy shouldn’t pay. It was an accident. She didn’t mean it.
The bottom line is that when the testimony comes out, and if it is proven that she was not paying attention in whatever form or fashion that is, she will be held liable. And, if it is proven that she slamed into the back of this woman’s car without enough time to break, it is considered “following too closely”. She is in a real tough spot and I truly pray for her. Unfortunately many people cannot and will not find it in their hearts to just sit down and say it is alright and we know you didn’t mean to cause this wreck which subsequently caused the dealth of my loved one. People need to be compassionate, yes, for both parties, but people need to be real too about the situation and how people will act in a court of law. Once you have a death involved, there are too many variable that need to be examined. There is no limit to what people can ask for when a death has occured. That doesn’t make it moral nor does it make things better. It really depends on how the person’s involved chose to resolve the issue. The law is not compassionate nor is it always just. It is up to the people involved to show compassion. If they can’t, then you better be praying that the law is on your side.

The media is attempting to make Brandy look like a monster by posting the pictures of the accident in an attempt to gain sympathy for the deceased woman and her family. It is extremely sad and unfortunate that this woman lost her life and my prayers are with her family, I couldn’t imagine losing my mom like that and I couldn’t imagine being the person responsible for killing someone like that. Both families involved need prayer. NOW!!! On the 50 million dollar tip, according to the news, the lady was working two jobs to take care of her parents and her child, the parents are the ones suing (am I right?!?!) so they just want to be taken care of. They need to be suing for what she would have been giving them a week, month, year something for maybe twenty years- nothing close to fifty million. You can’t put a price on life, but MONEY MAKES US SMILE JUST A LIL BIT HARDER AND BRIGHTER. Hopefully, both parties involved will be able to rest after the media is done demonizing Brandy. (Lesson to all: pay attention tot he road, do not do anything that takes your attention off of the road for longer than it takes for you to look in your rearview or side mirrors)- it can happen to anyone, I just thank God that He’s spared me from this type of heartache and sleepless nights.

Who’s to say this woman had life insurance or money saved up for her child to go to college or be taken care of. They have a ton of expenses now because of the reckless actions of someone else who just happens to be Brandy. Wrongful Death lawsuits happen everyday, even to lesser known people.

OK, black people…This is the way white people do it! If you’re gonna sue, you may as well ask for the moon and the stars! What’s the difference if they asked for $1M, $5M or $10M? What should you ask for one month after losing your daughter? $20M? Why not ask for $100M? Brandy has provide a preponderance of the evidence by her own admission of guilt! Admitting guilt is something you should never do until after you speak with your lawyer! I reserve judgement on the merits of the case and I’m even less concerned about the amount of the $50M claim!
When you go for new career, most employers ask what starting salary you would like! Ask for the moon and stars! When you sue for sexual harassment of discrimination, ask for 40 acres and a Benz! The asking amount means nothing unless you ask for too little! Sell yourself short and see how quick you get a settlement! You be like, “damn I should have asked for more!”
Ron Goldmans parents sued O.J. and were awarded $8.5M in compensatory damages and $25 million in punitive damages for wrongful death of their son. They never collected a penny! O. J. lives on $25,000/month from his $4M NFL pension!

Society is built on money and everything that surrounds it is about money.
Al Sharpton and a few others are on the case saying that she is being treated this way b/c she is a celebrity.
Some of you really on Sunday need to go to the alter and DEDICATE your life to Christ b/c you need help.
Her life, mine and yours are not for sale and are priceless. No amount of money will bring her back, but I guess the family living comfortably at the expense of their mother, daughter,or wife is good enough.
Money is the root of all evil so it is written, the money wont change anything or fill the void. But I guess for some of you if you money is the beginning and the end and if you really feel like that then the end will be soon for you.

Wow! “Muslim prayer when someones dies” From God we come, to God we will return. With that being said, it was time for the sister to go. Everyone has a birthday and death day it was just her time to go. My condolence to the ladies family and I’ll keep the Norwood family in my prayers also.
Brandy already admitted guilt, and said she “felt remorseful” and I’m sure her family will help her get thru this. I just wish most people on her will be respectful to all the families involved. I don’t get some comments on here about if she wasn’t a celebrity, the family wouldn’t sue. People sue non celebrities all the time, I know a lot of you are emotional about this because it’s Brandy, but non celebrities get sued all the time, everyday.
Just lift the families up in prayer and be respectful of the died. Surely, if it were you’re family member you would think otherwise.

My deepest sympathies go out to the family of the woman who was killed in the car accident. What is 50 million dollars gonna do? That will not bring her back and that will not take away any sorrow. If Brandy were a regular 9-5 working person woould they sue for this much. I don’t think so. There is not even a guarantee that she will be able to pay that to them if everything does go through. I am not condoning what Brandy did because she should have been paying attention, but she has to live with what she has done for the rest of her life. Everyone think about if you were in her shoes. She admitted that it was her fault also. She has not tried to excuse her way out of it and for that much I commend her.

@ #79, If it showed the correct pic on aol, that lady that died is not black, and at # 91 and whoever else said that the car looked like soup and brandy should pay, you need to remember that Brandy hit the back of the victims car, there was another car that slammed into the victim and killed her. Get it correct. The damage to the side of the car was not caused by brandy, and to bring it to a close, I agree with the people that are asking if the person in the car that killed her are going to be sued also, by the looks of that car they were going way more than 65 mph.

A year in Jail and 50 million will not compensate for anything….it can’t bring the dead back to life or clean anybody of sins….the damage can never be erased.

Even though it was an “accident”, someone lost their life and I believe she should compensate the family. $50 mil…$hiiiiit, if she got it like that. Go head and pay up.

Rebecca Gayheart and Matthew Brodrick killed people, and people didn’t hang them for it, but Brandy is being beat up left and right. I sense something shady behind this whole fiasco.

Some of you say “it was JUST an accident” like it was something that could not be controlled. Brandy apparently was not paying ATTENTION to driving, setting in motion conditions which led to someones DEATH. Is talking on your cell or looking for some paper or eating worth KILLING someone?? Brandy WON’T go to jail, Brand WON’T have to pay 50 mil as it’s a common practice for Lawyers to ask for outrageous amounts of money then get only a fraction. How much is a person’s life worth? If you live in the Boonies, maybe you can get distracted and not have an accident, but you can’t play that in NY, LA and most major cities. How would YOU feel if you lost your wife/husband because somebody was talking on their f*cking cell or putting on makeup?? Having to hear your kids sobbing everyday about what happened, to them 50mil ain’t enough.

So since 50 million can’t bring the dead back to life, since NOTHING can bring the deceased woman back to life, I guess they shouldn’t ask for NOTHING? You people are hypocrits, yall would do the same if that was your momma or child, admit it.

How much do you think they would sue for if the person that caused the accident were not a celebrity?

Why should the people in the other car be sued? If it wasn’t for Brandy banging into the back end of the car it never would’ve been hit by the other car? The car that actually killed the woman should have no responsibility in this as if it wasn’t for Brandy that woman wouldn’t have been put in the path of the oncoming car.

I feel bad for Brandy, cuz not only did her actions cause someone to die, but now she will prolly have to cough up $50 million that she DOESN’T have. Yall know Brandy don’t got big big money like that. Where would she cough up that kind of money? That’s the part that really has me thinking….I wonder how this is all gonna pan out. I wish her the best.

$50 million could never bring their daughter back. It sickens me to always here a person reacting to a tragedy with, “Wheres the insurance money” or “Who can I sue”. Money is the root to all evil.
Ppl need to get back to reality, death can not b reversed and no amount off money should b able to sooth someones heart. The family is greedy for asking for that type of money. Its just bcuz a celebrity was involved.

@ #96 Matty Knowles the trant said..
Okay your logic is cool and all, but a lot of people on this post are NOT saying that Brandy should NOT be punished, we are saying that SUEING someone for $50 MILLION is a little SUSPECT. I live in California and drive towards the city (San Franciso) for work everyday on those CRAZY highways. Everyday is ALMOST an accident. And everyday I think to myself “if something happens to me, which person should my family go after (which means WHOOP their @ss then PROSECUTE) and who should be forgiven. The reckless drivers that speed up on your butt and you see cutting everybody off, if something should happen…PROSECUTE their @SS!! But if traffic suddenly stops, and someone can’t stop in time, then it was an ACCIDENT. I don’t CARE if Brandy is a CELEBRITY or NOT, but APPERENTLY those PEOPLE do. Which is WHY they are SUEING her for that CRAZY amount of money.
And for everyone that’s saying “you know good and well you would SUE for ALL that MONEY”…Please SPEAK for yourself, because i’m NOT that type of person.
